1. Yeah, that's pretty true, especially for the first game. If you want to see something funny, go here and check out the Norfair Creatures art. Ridley is the one in the bottom-right corner. Yes, that's really him. And the actual sprites are only marginally closer to the Ridley we know and love today.
  2. If other people are seeing anti-aliasing on usernames, I'm not sure where it's coming from. They appear normal for me, in both Firefox and IE: I don't think you can even make text anti-aliased through HTML or CSS, which makes me think it must be an option in people's browsers. font-size:14pt; text-decoration:none are the only two styles being applied to the usernames.
  3. Another one of these, huh? I guess it has been a while. . . . Okay, I'll bite. Fear my dual monitors. Right now I'm using two great Ah! My Goddess wallpapers featuring Belldandy. They can be found here and here. I've been thinking of swapping them out for something else, though. I've been using them for a long time now. But it's hard to find wallpapers as good as these two.
  4. Ridley is about as humanoid as Bowser is, he just has longer limbs as well as wings. (And yes, Ridley can and does stand on his hind legs. Play any of the 2D Metroids and he always stands while on the ground.) So I don't see why that's a problem. And really, if Kirby passes, anyone should; he's nothing but a ball with feet and hands. And, like Bowser, he should be fun to rampage around the level with, tearing people up with his claws, tail, and fireballs. It's almost exactly the same concept as Bowser, just that Ridley will probably be more mobile. (I imagine he'll be able to jump similar to how Pit does in the trailer.) Personally, I'm really looking forward to that, since I like Bowser's moveset but I hate how sluggish he is.
  5. I want a girl with a mind like a diamond. I want a girl who knows what's best. Who's fast, thorough, and sharp as a tack. She's playing with her jewelry, she's putting up her hair. She's touring the facility and picking up slack. I want a girl who gets up early. I want a girl who stays up late. Who uses a machete to cut through red tape. I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity. I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket.
  6. Back in the summer of 2001 I was searching for Zelda art on either Google or Yahoo, I forget which. For some reason theOtaku.com came up in the list of results. Why, I don't know, but the specific page that was linked to was the Pika Dance. Basically, it was a page full of animated Pikachu gifs with the Pikachu Chant from the Pikachu's Goodbye episode of the anime playing in the background. It was quite hypnotic. After sitting and staring for a minute I decided to bookmark the site--because I like weird crap like that--before continuing my search. A couple months later I was looking around for a message board to join, but wasn't having much luck in finding one to suit my tastes. Most were either so huge that any post you made would be buried in a matter of minutes, or they were so small that they were practically dead. Neither extreme appealed to me. At the time, I wasn't anything close to an anime fan (I was, and still primarily am a gamer), so I wasn't really looking for an anime board. But the Pika Dance was stuck in my mind (I was really into the Pokémon games back then), and I remembered there being a "Forums" link on theOtaku. I decided to check it out anyway, and to my delight I saw forums for Zelda, Nintendo, Final Fantasy, and other video games. I lurked around for a few days, checking out the gaming forums, until I ended up joining on September 6, 2001. For probably a year or even longer I all but ignored the anime forums and just stuck to the gaming ones, occasionally jumping over to the General Discussion (aka Otaku Lounge) and Games & Stories (aka Adventure Square) forums as well. And then there was my stint in the introduction forum, but we won't go there. The rest is Otaku history.
  7. I use Firefox. Tabs alone make it way better than IE for me, since I tend to have two or three (or more) open at once while jumping around to various sites while browsing. It's a lot easier to deal with than having a bunch of individual entries on the task bar. The mass of extensions available for Firefox is also nice. The Web Developer Toolbar is one of my favorites and I use it quite a bit when writing web pages. Another that I can't get enough of is Adblock. I can just right click an ad banner and disable images from its source domain from loading. Extensions like that really push Firefox ahead of IE in terms of usefulness. Another thing I really like is how I can limit what JavaScript is allowed to do without turning it off completely. Those ads that float around, or pages that disable right clicking or put stuff in the status bar piss me off, so I just disable the appropriate settings and I don't have to take that crap anymore.
  8. .hack//Roots is an anime, not a game, so it should be discussed in the Anime Lounge forum. You can use this thread to continue talking about the series if you like. Thread Closed
  9.
I've known about it for months. It's not a big secret.
Well, yeah. They have a whole ad campaign going, so it's obviously not under wraps. But my point was that I hadn't heard about it, and I'd be willing to bet there are at least a few others like me who also hadn't heard about it before. For people who don't keep up with PSP news all that much (such as myself), this thread is another way for them to find out about the new color and maybe become interested in the system. So in that sense the ads have already succeeded. I guess I should have worded that better in my last post, so as not to imply that the majority of people were in the dark about the white PSP. (Pun intended. :p)
  10.
I just don't think that's right in any form what so ever. And Papa Smurf!I would have to completely disagree with you on how it's not racist in anyway at all because you said and I quote"How is this racist?"It is racist in so many ways that I couldn't explain all the reasons why they shouldn't show that.
Wait, so let me get this straight. There are "so many ways" that the ad is recist, yet when asked for specific examples (as in that question you quoted), you can't give any? If there really are a lot of ways in which the ad is racist, surely naming one or two wouldn't be that hard? People are overreacting way, way too much about this. Sure, there's some sensitivity in the US over this kind of thing. But that doesn't justify people being hyper-sensitive and crying racism just because a black person and a white person are in conflict, as in the ads. That's like automatically labeling a white person racist if they get into a fight with a black person, while ignoring any other possible motives. It's foolish reasoning that would be laughed out of the room were it over anything other than race. Nowhere in those pictures are there any actual messages of white being superior to black. The white woman has the black women by the jaw, yes, but where's the motive? None is clearly stated and the only one that could be implied is that the white PSP is coming to fight the black PSP for marketshare. Anything else and you're jumping to your own, pre-conceived conclusions instead of taking the ads for what they are. Oh, and I should mention that just by talking about the ads in this thread, Sony has already won. This is exactly what this kind of advertising is meant to do: Spark a bit of controversy, get people to pay attention, and get people talking about it to spread the word. Seriously, how many of you knew about the white PSP before reading this thread? I didn't.
  11. There was also another thread about this a while back. So Adam likely already knows about it, and I imagine that if there was anything they could do, they probably would have done it by now. Which leads me to believe that it is just a problem with Opera. My solution:
  12. /dance + YouTube = Awesome I came across these while browsing around the Guild Wars Guru forum and then looking through the related videos on YouTube. The first is a really well done music video, the second is a dance party to end all dance parties, and the third is just funny. Check 'em out, they're awesome. Heeding the Call INC-Frosty Dance Video 6 Guild Wars Mambo
  13. I'm pretty sure that The Lost Levels in Mario All-Stars is the same as the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2. I've never heard anything about The Lost Levels' difficulty being toned down for the US/European release. Only that Doki Doki Panic was released on the NES as SMB2 outside of Japan because the real SMB2 was thought to be too hard. Anyway, I'm big on replaying classic games. I even have a bit of a tradition of playing through Zelda: A Link to the Past (my favorite game EVAR!!1!1!) at least once a year--and usually it ends up being two or three times. Besides LttP, there are also a lot of other SNES classics that I love to replay. Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, and Chrono Trigger to name a few. I also love playing remakes, like Final Fantasy IV Advance and Metroid: Zero Mission. Getting to play a classic game with a fresh coat of paint and additional content is always a lot of fun when they're done right.
  14. I keep almost every game I buy, so I'm definitely a collector. What can I say? I like to hoard things. :p Part of the reason I keep all my games, though, is because I've never been able to afford many. So I try to pick out games that I'll enjoy playing for a long time, or that I'll enjoy picking up and playing through again in a few months. Not all of my purchases are hits in that regard, but for the majority of the games I own, I've either beaten them more than once or played them to death on a single time through. In the long run, this ends up being a lot cheaper than trading in my old games and buying new ones, since the prices you get for used games are, quite frankly, crap. I also just like to go back and replay classics every now and then. I never get tired of games like Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy IV, and others. I could never bring myself to part with games like these.
  15. #3 Some people don't like using me, they have their own way of getting what I provide. Regardless, I am there always... and with just one click you can be hearing what I have to say. For #3, I'll go with the site's FAQ page.
  16. That was hilarious. A couple parts had me actually laughing out loud, so it gets a thumbs up from me. I like the more gritty take on the Enter the Net style world, while at the same time remaining humorous instead of turning it all dark and serious. It's been so long since I've seen Pulp Fiction, I'm not really following it as a parody (since I barely remember the movie), but I like it all the same. As for the swearing, I don't know any of the characters involved especially well, besides Annie. (And after playing Guild Wars with her for a good while, I have to say, she's not far off. :p) So I don't know exactly how out of character they might be, but it didn't seem out of place in the story to me. Also, given that it's a parody with OB members fit into the characters' roles, I think you have to accept that some tweaking is going to need to be done.
  17. I think having the censor be optional for members, so they can turn it on and off at will, is a great idea. I wouldn't mind looking into installing that hack that DeadSeraphim linked to, though first I'd need to get set up so that I can actually download the hacks and view the code snippets they post for examples. Until then, however, there's not really anything we can do. With the standard vB software, censorship is pretty much either on or off across the entire site. I'm not even sure how we're able to have it turned off in the Arena forums, since I couldn't find anything for that in the control panel. And, like James, I wouldn't want to just turn the censor off across the entire site. The minimum age for registration is only 13, after all, and I think a lot of parents aren't going to want their young teenagers visiting a site with profanity flying around freely.

    Problem

I assume you mean on myOtaku, right? To turn your page on, go to your Backroom page, then click on Edit Profile link over in the left sidebar. The first option will be labled "Off or On?" with a drop-down menu over to the right to select which you want. Select "On" and then click the Edit My Options / Profile button down at the bottom of the page to turn your myOtaku account on.
  19.
I don't know if I should take some sort of offense to this, or something, but I figured I might as well chime in. Certainly The Nifty Fifty tends to include older members who have established themselves better in the community, but the final list is only created from the nominations we receive from the member base itself. if someone doesn't feel like the N50 isn't rewarding enough to younger/older members then the only way to correct that is by participating. The N50 was created to give all aspects of the boards equal recognition, not just older members. I take a little offense to the idea that these award events are created merely to give the oldies a backrub, although I'm sure that's not really what you meant.
Well, I was talking about the award given specifically to oldies. But I couldn't link directly to that.
Oldies ?Been here four years or more? You are officially part of OB lore and, as such, immortalised. And it's not just because everyone knows who you are, but your legacy runs through the veins of the very site. DeathKnight, Desbreko, Tony, Adam, James, Dragon Warrior, Shy and Lore to name only a few of the most influential members on the board. They are not Nifty. Nifty is them.? - Solo Tremaine
Fair enough, Dessypants. -Shy
  20.
Eh, I once (or twice) have started a similar type of thread in this very section, and although I nod to James's reasonings, I don't think this thread's criticism is totally undeserved like Des suggested. At least not in the sense that any[/I'] criticism is undeserved, because feedback is always good - it either helps you realize the problems or strengthen your view that everything is just fine.
I wasn't necessarily saying that all the criticism in this thread is undeserved. I was only addressing the age-based arguments. Those criticisms I think are definitely undeserved, as there have been a number of younger mods over the years--including myself and the ones mentioned in this thread--who have done great jobs.
What the hell? You guys have IMed me, PMed me, RANTED AT/WITH ME about these such pressing issues, yet you are going to just sit here and do absolutely nothing; and let someone else take the fall? That excuse of "you're on your own now, nothing can help you" is not flying by me smoothly, at all. You're a member of this MAMA, say something on your part[/b'], damn it.
I just want to point out that no one is taking a fall here. People may disagree with some or all of the complaints posted by AC!D!C, but it's not like he's going to be shunned because of it or anything. And he's certainly not going to be banned. Like Sandy said, OB isn't a dictatorship where leveling criticism at the mods/admins gets you in trouble.
Furthermore, if you have such drastic concerns, all you have to do is talk to James or Des. Both are very understanding, and will listen to whatever you have to say. I understand that it's very inimidating to some people, but I assure you that James and Des are both extremely pleasant and so easy to talk to.
Annie speaks the truth. I will always listen to and consider any concerns members bring to me. I may not agree with them, in which case I'll explain why, but I don't disregard things just because they're negative comments about the site and/or staff.
I talk to quite a few of the mods and consider a few of them friends. They do a great job, but my main concern was the fact that members, like JJ, Sakura, The Boss etc who have been on the Boards for a long time, have had consistent post quality and always follow the rules don't get recognition they deserve.
Being a moderator isn't about recognition at all. If what Annie posted about this MAMA group is accurate, that seems to be a big misconception here. Moderators are chosen with the wellbeing of the site in mind, and whoever I and James think is going to do the best job, that's who gets the position. So long as someone is sufficiently acquainted with the site and how things work, the amount of time they've been registered and the number of posts they've made is not taken into account whatsoever. It's not about who "deserves" the position, it's about who is going to do the best. If oldies want recognition, they already got it, and they may be getting more in the future. If oldies want responsibility, they're going to have to show that they'd be more capable as a moderator than newer members.
I feel a story idea coming... I must write!
This should make for a juicy DailyOtaku article. :p
I forgot the words of DeathKnight, when we had our first conversation: "You don't need to be a moderator to be recognised, they're just glorified janitors who clean up after everyone else."
That is very true. Being a moderator isn't some ticket to being popular, and you can get plenty of recognition without being one. Heck, just look at Dragon Warrior here; he's (in)famous around OB and I don't think he's ever been a moderator.
Now for those Moderators and/or Administrators who are about to jump down my throat...
I'm not going to jump down your throat, and I should hope none of the other mods/admins do. Turning this into an us vs. them situation would just be stupid. In fact, I'm glad you posted in here, Gavin, as your post is very reasonable and brings up some valid concerns. From your description of the group, I have nothing against MAMA. I think the motives you listed are great. Like I've said, I'm always ready to listen to concerns that members have with staff and anything else. This thread doesn't have to mean the end of the group. But this thread is not exactly, "on the quiet." If you guys want to raise concerns in this forum for people to discuss, that's fine. But if someone wants to point fingers and single out specific staff members who they have problems with, this is not the place. They can do that privately in a PM to me and I'll look into their concerns. As for the lack of staff in The Arena, I'm aware of that. But I would ask people to please understand that hiring good moderators is not an easy job. I've been working to fill out the site's staff since being given the responsibility, and I am continuing to work on it. Right now I'm looking into filling out Tokyo 3, which will hopefully be done within the next few days, and after that my attention is going to turn to The Arena.
  21.
Click Me. OtakuBoards was so much better 3 years ago.
lol...omg...that is like the most awesome thread ever lol ;) Okay, seriously now, James is right. It's easy to look back and remember the good while forgetting the bad. I try not to do that, however, and you know what I remember? People complaining two years ago when v7 launched, saying how things were so much better during v5 and v6. :animesigh Anyway, James already addressed pretty much all the issues here, so I don't really want to repeat him. But there is one thing that has always struck a nerve with me whenever it's brought up:
More so than inactivity is the age range of our mod staff, and lack of experience. Some moderators are only 14 or 15 (Aaryana is 13!), have less than 500 posts and haven?t even been here a year.[/SIZE']
I basically just want to point out the fact that I was 14 when I was first hired as a moderator, and I had only been here for six months. (I did have over 500 posts, but if you could see those 500 you wouldn't be impressed.) I was also still 14 when I was promoted to a category moderator position two months later. I don't mean to boast, but I do mean to point out that younger members can make excellent additions to the staff. I'm an example of that myself, so whenever someone makes the assertion that younger members aren't as good or as qualified, they're also indirectly making that assertion against myself as well as whoever else. Given that, I take those kinds of comments a bit personally. Now, maybe some people also have problems with me, but for the most part I think I've done a pretty good job around here. And I strongly dislike undeserved criticism.
  22. Just a quick note on thread closing here: Threads such as this shouldn't be closed just because a few people are posting spam in it. If there are also good posts being made, the bad ones should simply be weeded out by deleting them and, if need be, sending warnings to those people via PM. Threads that have already been going for a bit with decent discussion happening should only be closed if a great majority of what's being posted in it has turned to spam. After all, closing a thread won't really stop spam, because the next thread to come along will face the very same problem. Warnings and bannings, however, will.
  23. There are two trigger buttons on the nunchuck attachment that you can use with your index finger. One is C, and I think the other is labeled Z. If you go to the Controller page of the official Wii site you can see them on the back of the nunchuck. So it sounds like it should be the same as using the C stick and L buttons to control the camera in TWW, only using the control cross and C button instead.
  24. 150x80 isn't the only size you can use, those are simply the maximum dimensions. So if you find 100x100 avatars that you'd like to use you can resize them down to 80x80 and they'll work fine. Incidentally, 80x80 was the maximum size we allowed before switching to 150x80. Everyone has MS Paint (well, anyone with Windows, though I'd think Macs would come with a basic graphics program as well), so unless you're needing to resize an animated image, you can do that easily enough. And, frankly, there's no excuse for not knowing how to use MS Paint; it's extremely basic and simple. For the more complicated changes you can also post a request in the Art by Request forum. So I'm afraid the 150x80 limit is going to stay, at least until the next major site redesign. If we were to change the limit every time it didn't match up with an avatar someone wanted to use, it would be changing constantly.
  25. Well, since theOtaku and OtakuBoards have separate staff (for the most part), I can't answer your question specifically. But, if your submissions aren't getting accepted, it's likely due to one or more of the reasons listed on the Terms of Service page. I'd suggest looking over the guidelines and making sure your submissions comply with all the applicable rules.
