1. Yes, IP bans can affect people other than the specific one we're targeting. As mentioned, if they're on a public PC or there are others who visit in the same household, it can inadvertantly ban some people who would otherwise be fine. Which is why it's important to note that we only use IP bans as a last resort. They really aren't used that often, and when they are, it's when the problem's gotten to the point where the risk of inadvertantly banning a few others is insignificant. It can sound kind of heartless, but we're not about to let malicious members harass people and spam the boards unchecked.
2. That is kind of a problem, Retri. 150x80 or bust. I get more of a sense of accomplishment, however, when I see people actually using the avatars I make. Though seeing them all lined up in the gallery is pretty cool in itself. And Darky Dee, they can be pretty much whatever you like so long as they fit into a category or can support their own. I mainly just use cropped official art and screen shots for the ones I make, but people are welcome to be more creative. That set of Bleach avatars that Delta submitted, for example, were cool. I wouldn't mind seeing more like that.
3.
Now that's a lie. We all know mine is far superior.
You'd like to think that! 4.
Broccoli gets such a bad rap, sometimes. It's actually one of the vegetables I enjoy eating the most. The stem is just terrible to bite into, but the flowery part on top carries so much flavor. It's especially good when you cook it into something else, like a stir fry.
Small pieces of broccoli are good when lightly breaded and deep fried. It's about the only way I'll eat more than about one piece of it. Of course, deep frying it negates any nutritional value it would've had, but hey, it tastes good.
5. Heh, sounds like what I do with GW. Sometimes I'll play 25 hours or more in a week. I still fit school in, but pretty much everything else just stops for a bit. Right now, though, I'm mainly just waiting for Factions. I've played Prophecies to death (I've gone through the entire game with five different characters now), so I'm finding it hard to scrape together things to do other than farming. And I finally managed to track down a pre-order package today! So I'll have access to the Head Start thing, getting to play Factions 24 hours early on the 27th. Apparently there's going to be an event going on that day, so I'm looking forward to that. Because Amelia can never have too many holiday head pieces to play dress up with. :p
6. Actually, I liked the lightning dodging more than any of the other mini-games. (Or at least I didn't hate it like the rest.) I've got good reflexes for that sort of thing, so I got 200 in a row on my second try. ^_^ I never fought much in the monster arena, though. It seemed like you needed to level up for a long time to even stand any sort of chance against a lot of the bosses in there. I leveled up to the point where I could stroll through the Omega Ruins without any trouble, but I didn't feel like doing more than that.

[12:35:47] aestenAIM: I need an Elite glyph, or a Signet to remove my exhaustion. [12:35:57] aestenAIM: Maybe you could help me! [12:36:18] Desbreko145: Sorry, I've feeling pretty weak myself. [12:36:21] Desbreko145: *I'm [12:36:43] aestenAIM: Damn it. [12:36:49] Desbreko145: Like someone eviscerated me. [12:36:54] aestenAIM: Not even take a little bit of my exhaustion? [12:37:07] aestenAIM: I guess they really spiked you good, then. [12:37:14] aestenAIM: You got axed in the A. [12:37:15] Desbreko145: My health just isn't what it used to be. [12:37:50] aestenAIM: That's sad, because normally you can keep yourself alive pretty well. [12:38:06] Desbreko145: What can I say? I've got a migraine. [12:38:37] aestenAIM: I bet that wrecks your concentration, doesn't it? [12:38:54] Desbreko145: I can't even begin to contemplate it. [12:39:03] aestenAIM: Keep getting interrupted? [12:39:18] Desbreko145: Everything's so distracting. [12:39:46] aestenAIM: That's such a shame. Hopefully you're not getting guilted by it. [12:40:06] Desbreko145: Nah, but my plans sure backfired. [12:40:39] aestenAIM: Hope your plans don't get shattered even further. [12:41:39] Desbreko145: Guess I had too many delusions. [12:42:10] aestenAIM: What you need to do is have someone help you block them out before they happen. [12:44:07] Desbreko145: Hmm...or maybe I could just break them. [12:44:50] aestenAIM: But what happens if things get really savage before that? [12:45:46] Desbreko145: Gotta be resolved. [12:46:22] aestenAIM: Resolving it only goes so far when things get wild, though. [12:47:03] Desbreko145: You're right. I guess I should stick with pacifism. [12:50:00] aestenAIM: That'll certainly vex people. And some might not be vexed enough. What happens if they get through your pacifist nature? [12:51:05] Desbreko145: If they push me too far, they'll feel my holy wrath. [12:51:30] aestenAIM: They could rend your wrath useless, though. [12:52:29] Desbreko145: I could still smite their *****. [12:53:02] aestenAIM: How much of a bane to their existence could you be? [12:54:46] Desbreko145: Oh, I'll scourge them good. [12:56:07] aestenAIM: What if your scourging power gets spiked? [12:56:31] Desbreko145: My protective spirit will save me. [12:57:26] aestenAIM: They might shatter your spirit. Wouldn't that hurt your feelings? [12:58:02] Desbreko145: Not if I've got an aura of faith. [12:59:13] aestenAIM: Faith only does so much when there's profane forces of death around you. [13:02:25] Desbreko145: Then I must turn to sending up orisons. [13:02:49] aestenAIM: You've got to be careful that someone doesn't divert you. [13:04:36] Desbreko145: I can escape into a holy veil if they do. [13:05:23] aestenAIM: They could strip your veil off, then you'd be naked without it. [13:08:27] Desbreko145: My healing hands will cover me. [13:10:07] aestenAIM: What happens if your hands get desecrated? [13:11:18] Desbreko145: Then I guess my healing seed will just have to be exposed. [13:12:13] aestenAIM: If it gets disrupting chopped off, what would you do then? [13:12:44] Desbreko145: It would be a simple matter to rebirth it. [13:13:56] aestenAIM: You're not worried about leaking anything? [13:15:00] Desbreko145: Oh, it would restore my condition quick enough. [13:16:06] aestenAIM: What happens if you're still dazed and confused from your migraine earlier? [13:17:31] Desbreko145: I'm losing a little vital blessing won't hurt too much. [13:17:37] Desbreko145: *I'm sure [13:18:10] aestenAIM: Aren't you afraid of getting defiled? [13:19:42] Desbreko145: I think it's a bit too late for that. You should've seen me bond this guy earlier. [13:21:15] aestenAIM: Are you saying you are your own lord of your ether? [13:21:38] Desbreko145: Oh, I'm quite the prodigy. [13:22:34] aestenAIM: You don't fear getting burned, or getting hit by a surge? [13:23:21] Desbreko145: I'll ride that lightning. [13:24:53] aestenAIM: Are you stanced correctly for that? [13:27:36] aestenAIM: I have to go catch the train. [13:27:38] aestenAIM: :'( [13:27:42] Desbreko145: :-/
Yeah, so Alex and I got to "discussing" Guild Wars a bit ago. If you get all of these, I feel sad for you and would like to welcome you to geekdom. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Edit: Sigh. . . . I never see anyone from OB in game anymore, except for Alex. I've been having lots of fun in Fifteen Over Fifty, but I still miss questing with the old QKT peoples. Guild Wars: Factions is being released in about five days, on April 28, though. So is anyone else getting Factions? And can I expect to see people around in game again after it's released? . . . Does anyone even read this thread anymore?
8. There's two main problems with the butterfly catching game that make it hard: 1) The imprecise movement control, made worse by the less-than-great PS2 analog sticks (God help you if you're trying to use the control cross), and 2) the horrible camera angles they give you. A top-down view would be great, but no, the game loves its side views where you have little to no depth perception. At least for the Chocobo racing you can clearly see what's ahead of you, even if the control is worse. I still have no idea how they managed to botch the control for it as bad as they did while making the regular Chocobo riding fine. . . . But I digress. Basically then, yeah, you just have to memorize where to run along the path. Which involves a good bit of straight up muscle memory, since the horrible camera angles in some parts don't tell you crap about where the butterflies actually are on the path. Can you tell I have a deep loathing of FFX's mini-games? :twitch:
9. Okay, I've been cutting this thread some slack lately, but this is just getting rediculous. Most of the discussion in here is fine, but it can be downright painful to read. So please, people, make sure you've read the rules, and pay special attention to this one:
Incoherent/Sloppy Posts: At OtakuBoards, we greatly emphasize the concept of having clear, easy to read posts. This includes correct use of spelling, grammar and punctuation. If a member is posting with very poor quality, they will be asked to clean up their future posts. If the member persists in posting poorly, they will be banned from the site.
I'd rather not have close the thread, but if the post quality is going to keep going downhill, it may come to that.

why?

A lot of the time moderators will actually give threads a chance if they have some hope of sparking a decent conversation. But there are some threads that just have no hope of producing anything but spam. And those are the ones that are closed straight off. Like, say, this one. All that thread could possibly result in is people posting, "I'll be your friend," and maybe some random, off-topic conversation. Which isn't what OB is for; this is a message board, not a chat room. And in the case of threads getting closed in The Arena because they lack a rating: If that's the only reason your thread got closed, there's nothing stopping you from reposting the thread with a rating added in. As Retri said, members can't edit thread titles, so reposting the thread is the only way for you to add the rating.
11. I wonder if I could get away with keeping a membership for Desbreko's Fangirls and changing people's titles when they join. Hmm. . . .
12. That's basically it. If a new moderator is needed I'll look around and consult with other staff about who would be good in the position. Then, when I decide who I'd like to hire, I get a confirmation from James before sending them a PM to ask if they'd like to join the staff. So it's pretty much a, "don't call us, we'll call you," sort of thing. Oh, and this should go in the main forum, not the tech support sub-forum. *shuffles it up a level*
13. No, never. Nobody else can even compare with my hair.
14. I did another fatty update just now. Great batch this time; almost all of them went up. And I also added a big set of Scrapped Princess avatars that I made (as well as a few Slayers avatars I missed last time), to coincide with my watching the series again. This one has got to be my favorite: It's too bad we don't get to see more of Fafal in the series. She looks like a fun character.
15. I hear it's all the rage to get the title Banned. All the cool kids are doing it.
16. I just happened to remember there being a thread about the Metal Gear series in general a while ago, which was pretty much what your thread was as well, so I merged them. (Their thread was older, so it remained as the original, while yours was stuck on the end as new posts.) For threads that aren't specific to a single game or piece of hardware, the "one thread" rule doesn't expessly apply, but I find it's also handy to have only one thread dedicated to a particular series. We also have the "Final Fantasy Fan Thread" for all things FF and the "Dance Dance Revolution" thread for all things DDR, which have been popular threads, so the "Metal Gear Series" thread is pretty much the same thing. It gives people a place they can go to talk about anything relating to more than one game in the series. I think I'm going to add these series threads and any others I can find to the Play It Thread Directory so that they'll be more visible.
17. If they're just banned normally, then yes, they can still create another account with a different e-mail address. This usually isn't too hard to notice, however, and unless the person has shaped up considerably since getting banned the first time, they'll probably get banned again. But if they have improved and don't break the rules they're usually welcome to stay on their second account. As Retri mentioned, however, an IP ban can be used to cut off someone's access to the site entirely. Those are usually used when someone just keeps registering new accounts without improving at all.
18.
"I would like to have a word with you. And by 'a word' I mean a roundhouse kick to the face."
I guess you're right, Chuck; I'm being too modest. I won't try to hide my perfection any longer.
19. After looking over the thread, I don't really see anything wrong with SunfallE's post. It's close to what I would've posted--and have posted--in similar situations. I mean, when you get multiple people posting nothing but, "omg thats funny lolz," it isn't something that should just be brushed off. The point about providing your own input when creating a thread is also relevant. It's not something I've cared too much about, so long as the thread spawns some decent conversation, but in this case there was only one decent post in the thread. At that point, then, she would've been perfectly justified in closing the thread and simply saying, "Try again." And there've been times when that would've happened. We're actually letting more threads stay open now than we have in the past, to try and salvage them so to speak, rather than closing them altogether. Which is what SunfallE was doing in asking that people put more effort into their posts. So it could've been worse. Dagger also brings up a good point about it taking time to settle in and get used to things when a new staff member first starts moderating. We've hired quite a few new moderators recently, so new staff are going to handle things a bit differently as they settle in. And that might seem out of line with how things were being dealt with previously, but it's just an unavoidable part of hiring new staff. Not that I'm saying people should just overlook things if they notice something they think is out of line. But there has to be a certain amount of understanding. Oh, and one thing which was brought up here, which I'd like to call attention to, is this:
It's been a general trend recently that paragraphs-long posts, even if they say nothing (as I've seen happen) will never garner any warnings, while many picture or one-line posts which honestly say volumes more get chastised.
This should just not be the case. I realize it can be hard for moderators to make judgements on this sort of thing, but spam is spam, and it shouldn't matter how big a piece of spam a post is. So longer posts shouldn't be given preferential treatment over shorter posts simply because of their length. I'd encourage moderators not to hesitate in dealing with longer posts just because they're long. (Or if you're not sure, PM a senior staff member about it.) And I'd also encourage members to report such posts. They can be easy to miss when skimming through a thread looking for problem posts, so having members call attention to them can be a big help.
20. Someone else was also having trouble with the Jukebox a while ago. The posts about that can be found here, in the myOtaku Problems thread. They might shed some light on the problem. I really have no idea what's going on with it anymore, though. It used to not work in Firefox for me, doing the same thing you described, but it worked in Internet Explorer. Now it works in both just fine, and I've no idea if that's because something changed with the Jukebox or if it was from the recent update to Firefox. Sorry I'm not much help.
21. If we didn't point out people's mistakes publicly when closing a thread it would only result in more people making mistakes because they wouldn't have examples of what not to do. Which would then lead to even more mistakes needing to be pointed out, even if it was only happening through PMs. So all this would do is decrease people's awareness of the rules while creating more work for the moderators--all in the name of saving a few people some slight embarrassment from having their mistakes explained publicly. Now, if moderators pointed out people's mistakes, then laughed at them and called them names or something, you'd have a point. But we don't do that here--or if someone does, they're dealt with accordingly. So our intention is not to humiliate, but to educate. All moderators here are doing when they close a thread and explain why is pointing people towards the site rules as a reminder of how the site is run. And if anyone actually gets mad or offended when a moderator corrects a mistake, I think they need to look into deflating their ego. No one is perfect.
22. I think she's trying to put the picture up as a background on her myOtaku site, not as her desktop wallpaper. In which case, yes, you can simply resize the image to 1024x768 and then set it as your myOtaku background. It will still tile vertically to fill the entire page, however, unless you use a bit of CSS to make the background image stay in place while the rest of the page scrolls. (You can take a look at this little page of mine to see how to do that.) Also, if someone is using a different resolution from you, the image will tile or be cut off for them depending on whether their resolution is higher or lower than 1024x768, but that can't really be helped.

Favorit RPGs

Hey, welcome to OtakuBoards. I hope you enjoy your stay here. One thing that you should be aware of, however, is that reading the site rules and the sticky threads within the forums is important. In this case specifically, the Favorite Thread Guildelines sticky at the top of this forum. We ask that people put more thought and detail into their posts so that these kinds of threads don't end up as nothing but a long list of game titles. Also, there's a very similar thread to this on the second page, titled Good RPGs, that you could check out for some opinions on people's favorite RPGs. Thread Closed
24. GameFAQs most likely has the answer. We tend to discourage help threads, however, as there are numerous walkthroughs on the web for nearly every game out there. So we ask that people look for answers elsewhere before resorting to a post here. Thread Closed
25. I really liked the graphics in FFCC, so I think this is great. And I'd be willing to bet that the gameplay in FFIII, like FFI and FFII, hasn't aged as well as the later games, so I also like that it's a full remake. (From what I've heard, FFIV was the first game in the series to get the level progression just right, so you don't have to sit around leveling or be completely underpowered. But I could be wrong.) I've been looking forward to FFIII ever since I heard it would be in full 3D and saw the first few screen shots released.
