Yays, here's the next one.

Ah ha! Knew I'd seen this one, and I finally remembered what it's from. That's Chrono Crusade, right?
Yeahhhhhhhh, you have to take the bad with the good with that movie. Again, I think the Nanoha flick is good, but I could definitely understand people being squicked out by that. Nanoha is definitely made for people with ... specific tastes. (Of which I am not one, I might add! There's just enough good in the movie for me to look past that crap.)
To be fair, it's only the one transformation scene in the movie.

The Samurai X OAV is the same story that's told in the manga after the Kyoto arc instead of the crappy filler that's in the TV series after that point. So if you liked the TV series through the Kyoto arc, you'll most likely love Samurai X.

I'm going to recommend Kaleido Star because it's one of the few anime I've seen that is pretty much unlike anything else I've watched and also one of my favorites. It follows Sora, a girl who travels from Japan to southern California to join Kaleido Stage, a famous acrobatic circus/theater. The first series is mostly about her struggle to improve her skills and be accepted by the rest of the cast as she works toward her dream of becoming Kaleido Stage's top star.

20,000 is the max number of PMs that members are allowed to save. But if you'd hit the max, you shouldn't be able to receive any more PMs either, except from staff. I guess you could try deleting a few just to make sure that's not an issue.
Hi, I'm having some PrivateMessage problems at the moment. It appears I'm not being allowed to send them! I keep getting a little warning thing that says 'An error has occurred while sending. Please try to send again later." I have no clue what's going on.
Is it doing this all the time, so that you can't send any messages at all, or only sometimes? I checked the PM permissions in the admin cp and you should be allowed to use PMs.

That's correct.

This anime is loli lickin' good.

Only Gainax could get away with sketches instead of actual animation. Must be His and Her Circumstances.

Yep. The only anime with hot girl-on-mask action.

Pretty sure Shin should be able to get this one, if no one else.

Pretty sure that one's from REC.

This one should be a little more well known than my last one. No one going to get this either? I am disappoint. It's from Shukufuku no Campanella, aka Blessing of the Campanella. Someone else post another.

It's this member who needs to reset his password? I can reset it through the admin cp and e-mail the new password to him myself, and then he should be able to set his own once he can log in again.
My question is "why?" though. What do fansubbers get from all of this? What's their goal? Seems like a lot of work for little reward and could also land them in a lot of trouble with the law to boot. Will fansubbing stop if series being aired in Japan are simulcast internationally via online streaming? Will fans be willing to pay for online anime if legitimate sites offer them the same services as fansubbers but with a higher level of quality? As long as fansubs exist I would expect people to choose them over an officially licensed product. But I'm curious as to how much longer fansubbers will keep plying their trade. If the concept of online streaming was indeed brought about to compete with them it might very well be the fansubbers who will go the way of the dinosaur as licensing companies flex their corporate muscles and take over what has, until now, been their domain.
A lot of fansubbers do it because they just enjoy fansubbing, as Katana said. A lot also do it because they don't want to wait for a show to get licensed and eventually released in their country. Some do it because a show doesn't have any official translation available in their country at all and is unlikely to be licensed. (Even among English fansubbers, there's a lot outside of North America. So even if a US company picks up a show, it doesn't necessarily mean everyone who wants to watch it in English will be able to legally.) Some do it because they think they can do a better job in some way than the official release. (An example would be R1 DVDs that have inferior video quality compared to the Japanese R2 releases, leading to groups ripping the R2 video and fansubbing it.) Some do it for the e-peen of having their releases downloaded by thousands of people. Some do it simply because they don't want to pay for anime, for sure. A few even do it to spite the companies that put out officially licensed releases, which has its own set of reasons. Regarding the rise of official streaming and simulcasts, that has indeed had an effect on fansubbing. There tend to be fewer fansub releases of shows that are being simulcast than there normally would be. And if Crunchyroll can find a different business model that doesn't delay being able to watch new episodes unless you pay, I'm sure it would be even more effective at cutting down on fansubs.
1. words like Nakama don't have good translation in english. Literally translated it means friend (which is what One Piece uses in Dubbing) The word extends to companion, shipmate, partner etc. The subbing site I watch explained this before one of the episodes and that they weren't going to translate Nakama cause it didn't have a good translation.
The group's translator is an idiot if he thinks "nakama" can't be translated well. (Protip: You don't have to use the same English word every time you translate a Japanese word. If the meaning in Japanese changes with context, so too should the English word change to reflect that.) Nearly every time I've seen a fansub claim something can't be accurately translated, it's been due to their own incompetence or laziness rather than there really being no good way to translate it. Incidentally, the more Japanese I pick up from watching anime and stuff, the more I find myself preferring professional translations that don't leave as much untranslated. Of course, some are just plain bad (CR's Nogizaka Haruka Purezza, anyone?), and on rare occasions a fansub translation will actually be better than the official one, but those are the exceptions rather than the rule.

Hm, haven't had that happen. It's always loaded pretty fast for me when posting and stuff. What browsers are you guys using? And if you have more than one, does it happen in all of them? It might also just be the server or somewhere along the path between it and you being slow, even if your net connection is fine.

I could tell from the art style that it was a 90s J.C. Simulcast streams are great for the average viewer, but there are reasons why people might prefer other options besides piracy just for the sake of piracy. Probably the most common is that there's often stylistic differences in translation and some people prefer the "fansub style." Most streaming video looks like crap compared to a good encode from the Japanese TV source, so people who care about video quality are probably going to prefer fansubs or the simulcast scripts put together with better video. (Though I have to say, what I saw of ANN's 720p streams of Ore no Imouto looked pretty good.) Being able to download a file and then watch it offline can be much more convenient than having to load it as you watch, especially for people with slower connections. That's also made all the worse by Crunchyroll's and Funi's flash players being kind of crappyâ??or at least they were last time I used them. And there are probably more, but I think those are the main ones. Does that justify the piracy? Not really, but you can't reasonably expect people to forgo a product they want in favor of one they don't out of moral obligation to some company.

There's always going to be piracy, like Shin said. Even if everyone up and stopped fansubbing tomorrow, there'd still be piracy of official streaming video, DVDs, BDs, whatever's out there that's not free. That's why I don't think fansubbing in particular hurts the industry nearly as much as people screaming about fansubbing killing the industry would like us to believe. On the subject of Japanese piracy, I'd think that would actually hurt the industry a lot more than American piracy. Japanese piracy directly cuts into the animation studios' sales in their primary market, whereas American piracy mainly hurts American companies and makes them less likely to license as many shows. That still hurts the studios due to lost revenue from licensing, of course, but I doubt they rely on that nearly as much as BD/DVD sales in Japan.
