1.
My number 1 looked forward to game, would have to be Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles DS. If any of you go to the CCDS board on Gamefaqs, you'll know I fell in love with the game the first time I saw the commercial. Though I only played it once, over a year ago, I have it on my desktop, screensaver, and I own the soundtrack. I never got a change to really play the game, as I have no consoles. Except my DS. I want this game so bad..you all have no idea ;)
FF: Crystal Chronicles DS also has me excited. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they'll improve it over the original on the GCN. The DS's wireless play will fit a lot better with the game's design than the GCN's GBA connectivity thing did, but there are still some other issues that need to be dealt with from the original. I think the biggest thing they need to work on for the DS version is making sure that the game is still fun in single player mode. FFCC was tons of fun with four players, but that level of enjoyment got scaled back as you had fewer players, until it became pretty boring in single player mode after only a few hours of play time. If they fix the single player mode, I'll buy CCDS in a heartbeat. If they don't ... I may still buy it, but it would depend on whether or not it supported online multiplayer.
2. New banner! I'm watching The Slayers right now, so of course it features my favorite character from the series, Zelgadis. He's a great character; he's calm and cool, always going for what he wants, never liking to waste time, and yes, harder than a rock. (Gotta love AC/DC, by the way; great song.) And plus, he's a badass swordsman and sorcerer. There's just tons of reasons to love Zel, heh. Anyway, about the banner itself, it was rather slow in the making. First off, it was hard just finding a decent quality image of Zel with the right sort of look that I wanted for the banner. The background came surprisingly quick after I grabbed an image of -- what else? -- some rocks off Google Image Search and monkeyed with it, using various effects until it looked how I wanted. But the text was the real pain. In my banners of late, I've grown to like the format of having a single character image combined with text and a background. It makes for a clean, uncluttered look, I think. But the problem I run into a lot is how to make the text stand out from the background nicely without taking too much focus off the character. Ideally, I think the main focus of the banner should be the character, with the text being secondary, and the background being just that -- a background, and hence meant to draw the least attention. So of course I ran into this problem with Harder Than a Rock. Right off the bat, I knew which font and colors I wanted to use, and the look I was going for (rock-like, obviously). And I achieved that with some success after a while, but the text stood out way more than the image of Zel did. Eventually I ended up playing with the brightness/contrast levels of the text and character image, as well as making the text 15% transparent, to finally get things ending up as they are now. What do people think, then? I think it turned out pretty good, but I'm not about to rule out the posibility that it could be made better. (I've already gone back and added another effect to the text since first putting the banner in my signature.) Anyone see anything that you think could use tweaking?
3. If you've seen the first OAV, you should know who Enishi is. He's Tomoe's younger brother. But yes, there is a second, two episode OAV, subtitled Seisouhen. ... Pretty sure I spelled that right. It's set after the events of the TV series and serves as a good conclusion to everything. Like the first OAV, there isn't really any comedy, but it's still really good. Very emotional -- moreso than the first OAV, I thought, and one of only a few anime series to actually make me shed tears. :animecry:
4.
Who wants this wussy 'shock-rod' stuff though, I mean, really. One little zap and you wake up feeling all refreshed. If it doesn't leave a bruise, its not effecive. Out with the extendable truncheons.
Who says the rod itself has to leave a bruise? I can always just kick them while they're down if I'm feeling particularly mean.
5. I'm closing this thread on account of poor post quality. Please read the Favorite Thread Guidelines sticky thread before posting or replying to favorite threads. Thanks. Thread Closed
6.
Heh I have to admit Des that if we did all meet up in real life, and the mods did have genuine rods then I think they'd be a bit reluctant about hitting people with them. It's one thing to be a Moderator on OB, but it's be a whole different thing to be one IRL, some Moderators might think twice about going to hit someone 6'2" with a rod. I know it was probably just a joke but it might have some interesting consequences.
Well, see, I figured we'd get something like high voltage cattle prods to use for the mod rods. Something that could put a person on the floor and keep them down for a few minutes. It would be like a temporary ban, after a warning smack or two.
7.
Oh my f'ing god. I headr the most retarded non-gamer quote ever today. In science class, we got this paper with king kong on it. My friend (well... if you want to call him that) says to me "oh yeah, like that Atari game Donkey Kong." My blood began to boil. Me and my gamer pal were like, "dude, Donkey Kong for no frikkin Atari!" he said "I have two Ataris and I have Donkey Kong!" I quickly wrote up a paragraph detailing that DK was Nintendo property and I named every Donkey Kong game. He argued "but I have it! The one where the ape jumps up the pillars and takes the princess!" I said "yeah, and you're frikkin MARIO!!!" I came to the conclusion that he actually has an NES and is dumb. Also Xy GGu I dought this idiots are doing illegal system transitions. They're just dumb.
Wow, that's hilarious. ... But not for the reason you're thinking. Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario Bros. all appeared on Atari systems before the release of the NES. :whoops:
8. Anything that involves the words "Doom," "responsible," and "shooting," are my favorites. Also, anything my brother says which involves the words "Aeris," "revive," and "Triforce" -- I think you can guess where that one ends up.
9. Sorry, posting links to illegal ROMs is against the rules, so I'm afraid we can't really help you. If you can stand the load times, though, you might look into getting Final Fantasy Chronicles on the PS1, which is a collection of FFIV and Chrono Trigger. The version of FFIV is the Japanese hard type game with a new translation, so it's most likely the best version out there. Thread Closed
10.
Get Down Tonight :[/B'] Ha Auron you drunk. Funny indeed but the background, eh. I can see that's it's Auron but it's darkened and just doesn't go along with the quote.
This is one that I need to explain, I guess, as few people seem to fully get it on their own: Look closer at the background and you'll see how it relates to the rest. It's aligned so that the jug of sake that Auron carries is in view. Now, what do you think when you see Auron with his shirt open, a jug of sake, and the text "Get Down Tonight"? Also, the background was darkened to make the text easily readable; there wasn't nearly enough contrast with the background image at its original brightness. It's the same technique that I used in the Femme Fatale and Sasami-chan banners, only going darker instead of lighter. ... Though maybe I should've kept the jug at its normal brightness while darkening the rest, to make it stand out more. Oh, and I slipped another banner in at the top of the list. I knew I was forgetting something when I first posted the thread.
11. If you hadn't guessed, this is a thread for displaying banners that I've made. I don't make as many as I used to, but I also think the quality of the ones I have made has risen quite a bit in the last year. I only picked out my best when selecting which ones to put into this thread, and as you can see, only a few are from before 2004. But a problem I've faced is that I don't really get much feedback on them. Sure, I like them ... but do other people? Most of the time I have no idea. Obviously I don't need others' praises to justify my work (come on people, I'm not that shallow), but I find constructive criticism helps me improve my work. So that's what I'm looking for in this thread. (Just don't knock me for lack of originality. I enjoy editting more than original creation when it comes to graphics, and I like character-based banners, so that's what I do.) I may not make a lot of banners anymore, but if I'm going to make them at all, I want to make them good. Also, people can use any of these banners -- with the exception of the one I'm currently using in my signature -- so long as I'm cited. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hero of Winds - Zelda: The Wind Waker [April 19, 2003] Hunter or Hunted? - Metroid Fusion [May 30, 2003] Desbreko Spell - Final Fantasy IV [July 11, 2003] Metroid: Zero Mission - Metroid: Zero Mission [February 21, 2004] Four Swords Adventures - Zelda: Four Swords Adventures [March 25, 2004] Femme Fatale - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance [May 8, 2004] The Legend Returns - Zelda for GCN [May 12, 2004] Get Down Tonight - Final Fantasy X [June 8, 2004] It's the Subtlety - F-Zero GX [July 6, 2004] Oh My Goddess! - Ah! 12.
*confused* if we're speaking of FF games then you have to take all of them into consideration, especially since theres so many. Tidus, for instance, is the eptiome of your point. And I agree with you, he sucked lol. But on the topic of Squall, he was always pretty badass. However, he became more outgoing as you played through the game. He opened up to his teammates and showed a side of him not previously seen by gamers, I thought it was pretty good character development. Cloud, arguably the best FF character of all time, completely contradicts your statement. For one, he was always badass. Second, I don't believe I ever heard him "whine" and if he did, it wasn't about the tasks he had to endure. He actually loved the planet and the whole point of the game was to save it. And he did, with a lack of whining on the way there, I might add. Zidane, also another popular FF character, contradicts you as well. He did whine a bit, but he was never made to be badass. Zidane was always playful, full of curiosity with an outgoing personality. Even as events shook his world his attitude stayed basically the same. I chose to mention these characters simply because they're better known then others from earlier FF games. But I believe you'll find that the majority of characters are actually not bad. And after all the games they've mad, of course not every character is going to be a home run, but I think they've done pretty well.
I have to agree with you here, about the level of whining that FF characters display. I was thinking about replying with something along those same lines, but never got around to it. Really, the only FF games that have especially whiny main characters, at least out of the ones that I've played (IV, VI, VII, IX, X, T, TA), are FFX and FFTA. (I can't comment much on Squall from FFVIII, but from what I have seen of his character, he just kind of bored me rather than annoyed.) That's not to say the rest of them are all great characters, because they do have their faults, but I at least didn't find them annoying for that reason. For examples of good FF main characters, you should play FFIV and FFVI, Silpheed. Cecil and Terra are my two favorite main characters from the series; neither are whiny, they both have great personalities, and neither are one man (or one woman, in the case of Terra) armies like some of the more recent main characters.
13.
Desbreko You are the lover of video games....Zelda being your absolute favorite. You love to collect rupees in the game, and you love the purple Link. You love anime like Ranma 1/2 and Love Hina. You also like to make websites and to help others when they are in need. You are a nice person and you are the kind of person that cares for your friends. You also seem to have a sense of humor as well. :p
Heh, I suppose if you actually follow the links in my signature, they provide quite a bit of information about myself. ... Though you still just knew all of that from talking to me, you cheater. ;) Though now I have to wonder what someone who doesn't know me would come up with. Especially with my latest banner/avatar, heh. But enough about me; let's talk about Shinmaru for a moment. Just at a glance, you can tell he's into stupid humor. And if you're brave enough to click that link in his signature, you'll see it goes farther -- he lives stupid humor, as detailed in his blog. And although it may at first seem inexplicable that he managed to secure a moderator position, the first line of his signature gives a clue as to that. He obviously chases the girls, going so far as to use part of his signature to immortalize a fancy of his. No doubt he got in good with the rest of the staff during some "closed door meetings," if you know what I mean. ... And lastly, he seems to be too lame to make his own banners.
14. All the latest info has most likely been posted in the Kingdom Hearts 2 thread. And I doubt much else is going to be said about it until E3, but please use that thread to talk about KH2. Thread Closed
15. Well, if you can't find any on GameFAQS or Codejunkies.com, it's likely that there just aren't any. You may be out of luck. As for anime pictures, Google Image Search is your friend. Also note that this is the console gaming forum, and things regarding anime should go in the Anime Lounge forum.
16. Tied once more, as I vote for Nabiki. :p I haven't (yet) seen Escaflowne, but I doubt anyone's going to top Nabiki any time soon. Throughout all seven anime seasons, the OAV, two movies, and 38 volumes of manga, Nabiki never failed to amuse me. Whether through blackmail, extortion, or simply making fun of people, she's a consistantly funny character. Anything involving Nabiki is sure to be good.
17. Just so you know, the SNES/Genesis generation was the 16-bit generation. After that it started to get fuzzy, as the PS1 was 32-bit and N64 was, obviously, 64-bit -- so the 32- and 64-bit machines shared the same generation. But anyway, I don't really know whether I've enjoyed this or the previous generation more. I dearly loved my N64 and PS1; both provided me with hours and hours of great single- and multi-player fun. Titles like Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Final Fantasy VII, Super Smash Bros., GoldenEye 007, and Perfect Dark kept me gaming just as much as I am currently, despite the fact that I own a fair number more games from the current generation of consoles. I really don't have any complaints about the previous generation of consoles. As for the 128-bit generation, it's been a blast. Being older and having more money to spend on games, I've been able to enjoy more great titles than I ever have before. Though as I've said in the past, there's something missing from my 128-bit experiences that I miss a lot, and that's multi-player gaming. It's no fault of the consoles or games, it's just that me and my friends have all been busier with school and such so there hasn't been as much time to get together for gaming sessions. My single player experiences have, however, pretty much made up for that. This generation has spawned some amazing titles that go beyond simply being flashy (Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX), and even others that stand on their gameplay alone and don't even try to sell based on graphics (Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Animal Crossing). 3D graphics aren't the only thing that's improved during this generation -- 3D gameplay has kept right alongside the visuals. So while I'll always still love the N64/PS1 classics, I have to say that I think a lot of games from this generation really outdid those of the previous. Though of course, this is all ignoring the handheld scene. Even though they may be behind their console cousins technologically, the GBC and GBA/SP were home to some amazingly fun games. But then, there's the question of which generations the handhelds belong in -- especially the GBA, since it was backwards compatible with GB/C games and also featured ports of SNES games, yet was released at the beginning of the 128-bit generation. ... Which is a mess I don't care to think about farther, heh. All I know is that I love my GBA SP more than any of my consoles, so I guess whatever generation you put it in, that one's the winner for me. :animesmil
18. You know, you're right. ... The grass doesn't look much better than in OOT/MM. That screen shot of Link riding along that stream bed, though -- that looks awesome. I can't wait to see that in motion. If I had a higher quality screen shot, I'd use it as a wallpaper. The more I see of the overworld, the more excited I get about how fun it's going to be to explore. And after hearing that it's supposed to be two to three times bigger than OOT's overworld, I'm as giddy as Purple Link in a room full of red rupees. :animesmil
19.
Four words: Go read a book. :flush:
A while ago I might have agreed with this, but now I've got several hours of reading to do for school most days. So yeah, reading's great ... but I can only sit and read books for so long before I start to want to do something else, no matter how good the book may be. So I've found RPGs are a nice way of getting a decent story (most of the time) while doing something interactive. Personally, though, I don't see the problem with "short" RPGs. Two of my favorite RPGs, Chrono Trigger and FFIV, can both be completed in under 20 hours. Yeah, I like getting a lot of gaming time for my money, but if an RPG is good, it's good regardless of how long it is. I don't really think length influences the quality of an RPG, so long as it's not extremely short -- say, at least 10 hours. But as for recommendations, I can't really say. I've been playing catch-up with some older RPGs that I missed, like Skies of Arcadia Legends, so I haven't bought a new (at the time) RPG since FFTA.
20. Just a reminder for people replying: Listing a few titles and saying nothing else is bad. We want to know why you're looking forward to games -- lists in and of themselves are boring and spammy, and will be deleted. Myself, I'm going to have to say the new GCN Zelda has me the most excited. Hopefully there will be playable demos at E3, because I'm really looking forward to finding out more details on how they've expanded the combat system, both with horseback fighting and on foot combat. In the second trailer, seeing Link perform a down thrust was awesome and got me to wondering if Link will have any other new moves. Fighting in TWW was already way more fun than in OOT and MM, so I really can't wait to see how they're expanding on TWW's combat system. Animal Crossing DS is probably the game I'm looking forward to second most behind Zelda. I poured hours and hours into AC on the GCN, doing everything from arranging furniture in my house to making my own patterns at the Able Sisters' shop, and I can't wait to start over with a new village and with all new things to do. Plus, with the online functionality, maybe I'll even get to visit the villages of some of my friends on OB. I have a feeling ACDS will keep me occupied even longer than the original did.
21. I'd go if the moderators were to get real mod rods and could walk around smacking people who cause trouble.
22. I always figured the reasons for panty shots was obvious: Attract a wider male audience through fanservice. Kinda sad, but I get the feeling that it works. Myself, I think the height of panty shots is when they're humorous. Chobits' panty shots come to mind as good examples of the shots being used in funny ways. ... Though I don't think anything can beat Happosai's antics in Ranma ½.
23. Heh, the staff at the GameStop in our mall here (formerly Software Etc. I suppose -- the sign above the entrance is kind of a permanent light fixture) have never asked about my age when I've bought M rated games. They did, however, ask to make I had an N64 Expansion Pak when I bought a used copy of Perfect Dark. So I thought that was kind of cool. Though actually, I haven't yet been in the EB Games we have in town, so I can't really compare the two stores. One of the GameStops is closer to where I live, and the prices quoted in the ads EB Games sends out occasionally have always been pretty much the same as GameStop. ... So why bother going out of my way? I suppose I should go in there some time just to check the place out and see what sort of selection they have for used games. But like Tony said, they've always seemed pretty much the same to me when I've been in EB Games stores elsewhere.
24. Pikachu from the original Super Smash Bros. is my choice. Though for a long time Link was my best character, my skill with Pikachu eventually eclipsed everyone else. I became a master at juggling not just one, but multiple opponents -- on the ground, in the air, didn't matter. I'd encorporate every move available, items, even the level's evironment into my combos. (Saffron City is especially good for using the environment to farther your combos; the varied types and levels of platforms are great for bouncing people off walls and juggling them through the air.) Not even my brother and his friend, who got dang good at using Kirby's mid-air down+A move for instant KOs (get your opponent out over the edge and then hit them with that, and a KO is almost certain), could stand up to my Pikachu. Back when I was at my peak, I could pull off some crazy crap with Pikachu. And even now, the core moves of my main combos still come naturally when I play, though I'm only about half as good as I was. So I can't help but love that "stupid electric rat," which my opponents always thought was so useless. :toothy:
25. I kind of think the intelligence of GameStop's staff varies by store. The staff at the two GameStops in town haven't really come off as ignorant, though admittedly I haven't really talked much with them. (If I want to know about a game, I look up info online and in magazines.) Usually it's just, "Hi, I'd like to get such-and-such game," and I'm off. ... But at least they appear competent, and they always know what I'm talking about when I ask for a specific game. Also, prices around here seem to be the same no matter where I go, for both new and used games. And very rarely do I trade used games in, so I don't really care about that. So I don't see the merger making much of a difference for me personally at least.
