Yeah, an opinion is fine. It's just the way you said it at first, it sounded like you were saying PSP's wireless would for sure be better, without any reasons to back it up. Thanks for clarifying. I'm curious, though, why exactly you find the wireless on the DS to be disappointing. It's probably the feature I'm most interested in, so if you have any comments, I'd really like to hear them. And true, the PSP is a bit smaller, there's no way around that. I just wonder how big a difference it really is, when it comes to practicality. Like I said, I doubt I'd have trouble carrying either. Though then again, I never carry my GBA SP in my pants pocket unless I absolutely have to. I find even that to be too uncomfortable, so I always use either my jacket's inside pocket or just stick it in my backpack -- since school is about the only place I take it. I have seen occasional numbers for developers supporting DS/PSP and games that have been announced, though I don't keep up with them too much. But I was just saying, it's a good idea to present both sides when making a claim, since you usually can't count on people to go look up whether you're right or not. That, and it seems like a lot of people will make claims like that without themselves actually having looked up the numbers on both sides, so I tend to be wary of that. But still, DS is getting quite a bit of support itself. I certainly wouldn't say it's lacking in support, at any rate. Nintendo Power keeps a monthly list of games announced for it, and there are a good number of big name titles on it. Oh, and you've instantly gained some respect by mentioning that you still play the original Zelda, heh.

Gaming What do you think of the games of 2005?
Desbreko replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Noosphere
Just to remind people, before a DS vs. PSP debate breaks out, we already have a thread for that: PSP or Nintendo DS? I really loved The Minish Cap, and though the it's not without its disappointments, it'll probably be one of my favorite games of the year. Not sure how long it took me to beat it, but it was a decent length of time for a 2D Zelda. Though regardless of overall length, I still wish they had put in a full eight dungeons. The six that there are were really fun, and I wanted more. And obviously I'm really looking forward to the new Zelda on the GCN. I know I just keep saying this, but I absolutely cannot wait to see how massive the overworld will be, and how much exploring there'll be. Plus, any improvements to the TWW combat system. It was tons of fun to just waste a room full of baddies in TWW, so I have high hopes for this new game. Beyond that, I haven't actually thought too much about upcoming games in 2005 -- I still need to catch up with some titles released Q4 2004. Tales of Symphonia, FFI&II, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. ... There were way too many awesome games released just before Christmas to keep up with. Star Fox Assault looks promising, though. It was the cover story for the latest issue of Nintendo Power, but I've only skimmed the article so far, so I'll have to come back to it later. -
In this thread there have been many different prices announced for the PSP...well the malarky is over... the Base price for a PSP is $179-199 the Value Pack is between $229-249 The PSP is better for many reasons. The PSP has graphics that are much better than the DS. The PSP has a much better lineup and the Wireless & LAN will be much better than the DS. The PSP will also play and store MP3 and Movies that you can watch. The DS is very bulky and is noticable to carry around. The PSP is much thinner and is not bulky at all. Another huge factor is that the PSP is backed by many more developers and has much more support than the DS. Over 99 developers and production companies have already signed up for PSP development.
One thing that has to be accounted for when comparing launch line-ups and games in general, is that it's completely subjective. One person may love a lot of games for the PSP and hate a lot of the games for the DS -- the opposite is also possible. You can't argue that one system is better than the other overall just because you personally happen to like more games on one than the other. Only total sales numbers will show which games are actually more successful. Same thing with graphics. One system may be technologically superior and can produce better graphics than another, but what happens when you get someone like me, who doesn't care about that difference? Well, that supposed advantage means nothing to me. The DS handles 3D well enough, and the PSP's graphics don't impress me. And on the other hand, there are people that won't play games if they don't look good enough, so the PSP's better graphics will be a big thing for them. It just depends. Morpheus does have a valid point about the wireless capabilities, though: You can't know which is better without having used both. You just don't have the experience. You may not like one, but that doesn't automatically mean you'll like the other more. And I would also argue that the DS has only been out for a couple months, so you can't expect the full potential of the DS's wireless capabilities to be used yet. Give it some time and you may see some cool things happen. Personally, I never expected it to be used for more than multiplayer games and Pictochat at launch, and I don't expect any more from PSP when it launches. As for movies/mp3 capabilities, I don't really have any comments, since I haven't been keeping up with what all the PSP can do, and what's being planned for DS. Personally, I'm going to be buying a DS for the games, and if I ever get a PSP, it will also be for the games. Secondary functions don't interest me much. About the systems' sizes and being able to fit into pockets. ... Well, that really depends on the size of your pockets, doesn't it? I've seen a friend's DS, and also life-size pictures of the PSP, and I don't think I'd have trouble fitting either into my jacket's inside pocket. Which is about the only place I carry my GBA SP as it is. Something about the number of developers that I'd ask is, do you have any numbers on DS's support? If not, how can you say PSP has better support? Do you know that for a fact? And if PSP does have more support, is the difference actually a substantial amount? If you want to make an argument like that and be taken seriously, you really need numbers for both systems. Not that I'm bashing the PSP, but your argument does have a lot of holes in it.

Welcome to OtakuBoards, klamndovel1000. Just so you know, we have a pretty high standard of quality here. And while the subject of your thread here is fine -- discussion about new things people would like to see in a series is always great -- you might want to work on using more punctuation in your posts. Correct punctuation makes posts much easier for people to read and understand what you're saying. Also, when you create threads in the future, you should include some of your own thoughts on the topic at hand. In this case, what you think of the changes you've suggested, why they'd be fun, etc. This both helps to start a good discussion with new ideas, and doesn't lead to as many spammy posts such as, "Yeah, that would be cool," and the like. (For full details on what's considered spam here, be sure and take a look at the rules page.) And one last little note, I've editted the thread's title a bit, to make it more apparent what the thread is about. Thanks for your time, and have fun posting.

The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty: Nominations (2004)
Desbreko replied to Shy's topic in General Discussion
What is it? Play It Why is it nifty? To put it simply, I wouldn't be here at OtakuBoards or on myOtaku if it weren't for the Play It forum, and the various video game forums that preceded it. I'd say 95% or more of my posts are in it and the Video Game Archives, to give you an idea about how much time I spend in there compared to other forums. If it weren't for the gaming forums, I'd have left OB long ago; if I had left OB, I wouldn't have met all the awesome people that I have through the boards. What is it? Semjaza Azazel (aka Tony) Why is it nifty? Just to start, Tony is one of only a few people whose knowledge of videogames makes my own look small in comparison. His posts are always well written and informative -- there was actually a time when I barely bothered checking gaming news sites because he'd always post the latest news in Play It -- even when they're short. Pretty much everything he writes is worth reading. What is it? Shinmaru Why is it nifty? Nad abuse and jokes about him never doing any modding aside, Shinmaru really is a great guy. He's another excellent contributor to the Play It forum, an awesome writer, and has a funky sense of humor that makes talking to him highly entertaining. Also, due to his relatively close residence, he's one of a few OB members that I'd actually make an effort to meet some time. I get the impression he'd make great company for multiplayer gaming sessions. What is it? Super Smash Bros. Melee Why is it nifty? I really loved this thread. It was fun and interesting to both read and post in, for the great tier debate and just random talk about the game. It also revived my interest in SSBM, and got me playing on Marth more -- he's now one of my favorite characters. Plus, like the SSBM thread before it (which can be found in the archives), it gave the Play It forum a nice boost of activity. What is it? PC/Mac Why is it nifty? If Play It is the little niche that doesn't get a lot of activity on an otherwise busy message board, the PC/Mac forum is a tiny alcove within that niche. Not many people post in the forum, but after I started visiting it regularly, I found I really liked it and its Web Site Workshop sub-forum. Nearly all of the people that post in there regularly make at least decently well written posts. Plus, with the lower amount of activity the "one game, one thread" rule isn't needed, and it just generally has a more relaxed atmosphere than Play It. What is it? Who's Online Why is it nifty? Because spying on what people are doing on OB at the moment can be mildly amusing when you're bored. Sometimes you'll see someone viewing an interestingly titled thread, and you'll follow the link and find yourself whiling away time reading posts that you'd otherwise never see. What is it? The "Deal With This Member" Thread Why is it nifty? Because things get done when someone posts in it. -
I've seen fansubbed versions of the first two episodes now, and the series seems to be off to a decent start. Considering it really hasn't gotten past Keiichi's and Belldandy's introductions, though, I don't have much of an opinion on it yet. As I expected, it's slower paced and more detailed than the OAV, since they've got a whole series to spread things out across, rather than a scant three episodes. (The first episode of the OAV, for example, begins with Belldandy's introduction and goes from there, rather than following Keiichi for a while beforehand.) Not a bad thing, in my opinion, though it makes the waiting in between episodes worse, heh. Can't wait till things start picking up. As for art/animation ... I sort of have the same opinion on it in anime as I do for graphics in video games: If it doesn't detract from the experience, it's good enough. I thought these first two episodes were fine -- the CG is especially better than in the movie -- but I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the art. The characters and story are why I like AMG.

Personally, I don't care if any of the next generation consoles are backwards compatible. I keep all my old systems anyway, and the only reason I play PS1 games on my PS2 is because it's easier to only have the one system hooked up. Heck, I still have my N64 and SNES hooked up, in addition to my GCN and PS2. The only reason I would care if a system were backwards compatible would be in cases where I don't have the first system. And while this would be the case with the Xbox 2, I doubt I'm going to be getting one anyway. With handhelds, I think the issue is bigger because of their mobility. Yeah, who cares if you have two consoles sitting in front of a TV instead of backwards compatibility on the newer one. But what about carrying around two handhelds instead of having backwards compatibility on the newer one? The first I don't mind, but the second I do, because it's more of a hassle. I've no doubt that any time I take my Nintendo DS anywhere (after I get one, that is), I'll be making good use of the GBA cartridge slot simply because I have a good number of GBA games that I still like to play. And that way, I can carry two games with the system and not even have it take up any more space. SM64DS + ZLTTP = awesome.

I'd like to remind people that simply posting a list of games and nothing else is spam, and will be deleted. Lists don't promote or lead to any sort of discussion, and they're also pretty boring to read one after another. So please try and post up at least a quick thought or comment for each game you list. I really don't want to close this thread, as I think it could be a really good place to just pop in really quick and give some opinions on whatever you happen to be playing at the moment. A fun thread that anyone can just jump into, post some quick thoughts, see what other people think about whatever game, etc. As for what I'm playing right now, my main focus has been The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. I just beat it a couple days ago, and now I'm searching for those last seven Pieces of Heart, and the last five Kinstone fusions I have left. And, of course, trying to get all of the figurines. The game rivals The Wind Waker for the amount of side quest stuff to do. And then, of course, there's PlanetSide, an MMOFPS for the PC that I've been playing for the last few months. It doesn't look like it's going to get old for a good long while, and it continues to suck away a few hours of my time at least every other day. Sniping just never ceases to be fun. ... Unless I'm continually hunted down by aircraft whenever I try it. That sucks. Third on my list is Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. I'm borrowing this game from a friend, and I've been playing it off and on every now and then. It's not as fun in single player mode, however, so I'm not playing it as much as I would be if I had someone else to play multiplayer with. Still fun to just run around and put the beat down on groups of baddies, though. I really need to pick up Metroid Prime 2 Echoes again, though. I just sort of stopped playing after a bit. ... I dunno. I had fun whenever I played it, it just didn't grip me like the first one did. I'll complete it eventually, though. Even if it takes me years (*cough*FFIX*cough*), I almost always finish games that I start.
Hey everyone, I'm new to this board and just wanted to say hey and hope I am doing this right.
Hey, welcome to OtakuBoards. And yeah, that was a nice post. Only thing is, there's already a thread about FFVIII from way back, so I've merged them. Just a little tip for easily finding out if there's already a thread on the same topic as one you'd like to create: Click the Search this Forum button on the main forum page, then click Advanced Search. With an advanced search, you can select to search in thread titles only, which works a lot better for finding old game-specific threads. Have fun posting.

Wow. Just ... wow. The Minish Cap keeps getting better. I played through the fourth dungeon, and got part way through the fifth when I stopped playing just now. The Temple of Droplets (aka level 4) was absolutely awesome, with lots of water and ice action. A very fun place to explore, with one really great puzzle in addition to the standard fare dungeon puzzles that I just breeze through. (That's one thing about being so familiar with the Zelda series, and how things generally work in it; you usually recognize what you need to do, and how to do it, almost instantly.) The boss was annoying, however, as there didn't seem to be any real pattern to it, or any way to tell when you would be able to damage it from when it would just turn too quickly for you to get around behind it. First boss to make me use a bottle of Lon Lon Milk. And the fifth dungeon, well. ... I don't know if people who haven't gotten as far would want me to spoil what it is, but it's been absolutely awesome so far. Reminds me a lot of the original Four Swords, though, I'll say that. I love it. Having the Magic Boomerang is a must, though; second most useful item to have in the dungeon, with the first being the required dungeon item. I'm concerned about the game's length, however. What I feared most -- there only being four dungeons -- has turned out not to be the case, but five dungeons still isn't very many. I was really expecting a full eight, as is standard for the Zelda series, but now that all my item slots are filled up in the subscreen, it seems doubtful that they'll be able to squeeze three more in. One for a better shield maybe, but I've no idea what else they could give you from more dungeons. I'll just have to wait and see what happens after I beat the fifth one. Edit: Right, so I just beat The Minish Cap, and the official count is in: There are
6
dungeons total in the game. Not the eight I was hoping for, but not the four I feared, either. And what with all the out-of-dungeon puzzles and sidequest stuff, the game still manages to be pretty long, so I'm satisfied. I still wish there'd been the full eight, though, as you really get way too many items in random caves and whatnot, such as the bow & arrows -- that seriously made me go "WTF?" when I found them. Despite having beaten the game, however, I still have a good amount of stuff left to do. Unlike most games, I just went ahead and beat the game before getting everything, because I really couldn't tell for sure whether or not that last dungeon was the final one. The game had thrown my a similar curve before, and I had just done a tone of sidequest stuff, so I went ahead and beat it. And it turned out to actually be the final one. The end boss was a very pleasant surprise. Not only was it a good, long fight with lots of variety, but it was also fairly difficult. I actually had to use two Blue Potions and one Red Potion during the course of the fight (though if I had realized I could use my sword during one stage, one of the Blue Potions wouldn't have been necessary), which is two more than any other fight. Still no deaths (yay for 000 completions), but I really had to stay on my toes for most of the fight. It was lots of fun. As always with Zelda games, the ending was just sort of "meh," but really, does anyone expect cool endings from the series anymore? It wrapped things up nicely. ... Except for one thing, which it left open. You see, in the original Four Swords, Vaati is sealed away by the Four Sword until he manages to break free at the start of the game. But at the end of The Minish Cap, no such sealing occurs. Methinks they may be planning yet another Four Swords prequel, or at least leaving an opening for one.
I thought it was actually like being a whole other person is a completely different world.
That's exactly the spirit of the Zelda series, which is part of what makes the games so great. I love being able to go on adventures as Link. ^_^ The first game that really got me into gaming was Super Mario Kart on the Super NES. I had played Duck Hunt on my brother's NES before that, but for the most part, I just watched my brothers play video games. Super Mario Kart was the first game that I actually picked up and played myself. At first I mainly just played two player grand prix with my brother, but then I started getting good enough to win on my own. Eventually, I got so I could beat 150cc Special Cup without too much trouble. Never bothered trying to do that with the shrinking code in effect, as that just annoyed me, but whatever. Super Mario Kart was a really good game for just starting out. It was fun, easy to pick up and play, had really tight controls, and had a good range of difficulty. I can't even begin to count the number of hours I spent sitting in front of the TV playing that game, before ever even touching any others. It still amazes me how good I managed to get at it, for how young I was. Playing our old SNES way back when (i.e. before the days of the PS1/N64) still remain some of my fondest gaming memories.

Gaming Goldeye rouge agent game tips and help
Desbreko replied to shaman duelist1's topic in Noosphere
I think if people need help, they can check a walkthrough site or something like that, or ask for it. Just posting up random tips usually doesn't help much. Also, we already have a thread for GoldenEye: Rogue Agent. All discussion about the game should go in there. Thread Closed -
I picked this game up Wednesday, as soon as the local GameStop got it in, and have had three play sessions with it so far. And wow. ... I love this game. It's no A Link to the Past, and I won't know how well it stacks up to Four Swords Adventures until I play all the way through it once or twice, but still, wow. The Minish Cap has lived up to pretty much all my expectations and more. One of the biggest ways in which The Minish Cap has impressed me is with its puzzles. Not so much the puzzles in the dungeons, really, but the puzzles outside of the dungeons. They remind me of the kinds of puzzles you find in the old point and click PC adventure games, which I always enjoyed. That is, you're told what your objective is -- the dungeons are even marked on the map -- but figuring out how to accomplish it is left up to you. The game doesn't hold your hand and walk you to the next dungeon, telling you exactly where to go and what to do next. A good example is when you're trying to get to the third dungeon:
You can get to the Castor Wilds, a swampy area, but when you try to walk across any of the marsh water, you sink. This effectively traps you at the entrance to the area, and at this point, Ezlo observes that you need to be able to run faster in order to make it across. Of course, if you're at all familiar with the Zelda series you know that means you need the Pegasus Boots, but the game doesn't come right out and tell you where to get them. It actually makes you think a bit, before you realize there's a shoe shop in Hyrule Town; the perfect place to start your search for a pair of Pegasus Boots.
Inside the dungeons is also pretty good, though. Nothing has especially impressed me yet, but all of the dungeons have been fun so far. (I've beaten the first three, and I just got into the fourth before stopping to write this post.) They haven't quite been up to the brilliance that are A Link to the Past's dungeons, but those are hard to top. They have, however, been getting progressively more complex, so we'll see what the later ones are like. I have high hopes for the fourth one. I only looked around the first room a bit, but ice dungeons are always fun. The one thing I'm a bit disappointed in are the bosses. Like Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker, The Minish Cap seems to have gotten stuck in the rut of, "stun the boss with a secondary item, then use your sword while it can't move." Each of the first three bosses follow this pattern, and I'm betting all or most of the others will too. And as such, the bosses so far haven't even compared to the constant action of A Link to the Past's. They're okay, but not exactly hard or especially fun. The high points of the dungeons has been playing with the new items, rather than the bosses. Also, most normal enemies seem a tad weak, which makes the game pretty easy. I've only found myself low on hearts twice, and one time was only because I got stuck on top of an enemy for a couple seconds. The number of enemies, both inside and outside dungeons, is good, but they're all easy to beat. Part of this is due to an annoying little thing where most enemies pause for about half a second whenever they get hit, so if you hit them once, chances are you'll be able to wail on them with your sword while they just sit there and take it. This especially cripples Darknuts, since you don't even have to damage them for the little pause to take effect; simply hitting their shield does it, which can give you enough time to walk up beside and hit their unprotected side with your sword. So the puzzles have been absolutely wonderful, but the combat has been a bit lacking. Overall, though, I'm extremely happy with the game, and I can't wait to play it more.

Burori is right; what you've got is Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for the Game Boy Advance. And while it's the second Kingdom Hearts game to be released, it's much different from Kingdom Hearts 2, which hasn't been released yet. Chain of Memories is set in between KH and KH2, so it could be thought of as a sort of Kingdom Hearts 1.5. First off, I'd check GameFAQs; they have a number of Silent Hill walkthroughs that will likely be of more help than asking here. It's always a good idea to check GameFAQs before posting here. Second, if you do end up needing to post here to ask for help, you should be as detailed as you can about what's giving you trouble: Where exactly are you stuck, what are you trying to do, what's stopping you, etc. The more information you give, the easier it will be for people to help you. And third, please read the How to post in Play It sticky thread for rules relating to the creation of threads in the Play It forum. This thread is severely lacking in detail. Simply listing some games and giving them a 1-10 rating, while barely saying anything about them, doesn't quite cut it. There's also already another thread very similar to this one. As long as they keep the cel shaded style for the Four Swords series, I think I'll be happy. I was looking forward to a larger cel shaded overworld (that's not 90% ocean), but yeah. ... It's hard to complain when I look at those screen shots. And I definitely wouldn't mind it having more of the atmosphere that MM had. It would certainly suit the graphical style. Even though OOT was made in a more realistic style, its atmosphere feels a lot like LTTP's to me. MM has been the only Zelda game with a dark and dreary feeling to it, so getting more of that is fine by me. Variety is always good. I'm promising myself I won't cry when I see the game in playable form at E3. :p
Just had to give a shout out because I'm hella excited about this game...duh. (haha, don't ya just love n00bs?)..but seriously, I imagine this'll be a pretty busy thread right up till the game comes out...at which point there will be multiple threads regarding this topic that will be thus busy. :P
Yeah -- they'll be busy being closed/merged with this one. So annoying when people don't even look through the first page of threads before posting a new one. ... But actually, this thread hasn't been nearly as busy as the Wind Waker thread was back before its release. Though TWW caused a fair bit of controversy with the cel shaded graphics, while the new one is just going back to what all the OOT fanboys/girls want, so I guess it's to be expected. (That was a general statement and not directed at anyone specifically, by the way, so nobody flame me.) This thread should really pick up again when E3 2005 rolls around and we get more information about the game; I'm guessing Nintendo will probably have a playable demo available if the game is still on track for a 2005 release, which would be good for some hands-on impressions. I can't wait to see the full extent of horseback combat. Edit: New screen shots! (Courtesy of Nintendo.com.) Only three, but I'll take anything I can get. This game looks like it's going to rival Metroid Prime 2 Echoes for the best looking GCN game. I'm thinking this is a Moblin. Remember the ones in TWW, that carry the big spears? Yeah ... this looks like one of those, except much nastier. Heck, it looks like it could bite Link's head off in one go. And check out the lighting effects on its armor, as well as Link's sword and tunic. Holy crap, just look at the level of detail on Link's character model! I can't even imagine how much better it looks in motion. And notice the rolling hills in the background? I am so hoping that's not just a skydome backdrop. More of the sweet, sweet horseback combat shown previously at E3. I can't wait to see the full depth of what they've done with the combat system. Nothing like trashing Bokoblins as you ride by at high speed, when you just don't care enough to stop.

In no particular order. ... (I.e. I can't remember the exact chronological order.) The DailyOtaku I can't believe no one else has mentioned this yet. I mean, yeah, it is my thread, but. ... Okay, so this is a shameless plug. Sue me. Anyway, the DailyOtaku is one of my favorite memories from 2004. It was more fun to write articles for it than pretty much anything else I wrote last year, and I got a lot of laughs from the articles, even though I was the one writing them. It's definitely something I hope to continue through 2005. Teh Silly Circus The chat to end all chats. ... Except that it didn't. It was ten days of mindless babble -- something to rival the Padded Room Party for the utter lack of intelligence. But, it was always there for those ten days. Whenever I wanted to chat, I had the window open, and all it took was a few clicks and I could just start talking. Also like the Padded Room Party, I wouldn't want to repeat the experience, but I'm glad I was a part of it. OtakuBoards v7 Working with James and the other staff members on organizing v7 before launch, and then getting things running smoothly after launch, was a fun and hectic time. v7 really rekindled my interest in OB -- before that, I was getting kind of bored and was barely posting. The complete reorganizing of the gaming forums sparked a new interest and kept me posting. Team Leader of Team Yokoi Being made a super moderator again is memorable, I suppose. Kind of had the same effect on my posting habits as v7 did, only to a lesser extent. It also got me to pay more attention to the PC/Mac forum, which is cool. I'm starting to be more interested in PC games lately, and I always like posting in the Web Site Workshop sub-forum. OtakuBoards: Enter the Net How can you not love it? The best OB-based story I've read. Three Year OtakuBoards Anniversary (September 6, 2001-2004) I might as well stick this in here. I think my three year moderating anniversary will be more memorable, but it was still neat to look back at all the memories I had at OtakuBoards over those three years. Here's to another three years, I guess. ... I wonder if I'll still be here through college.
