1. Only about five more days till I can get The Minish Cap! There's just nothing else quite like the excitement I get when the release of a new Zelda game is near. Makes me feel as giddy as -- no, not a schoolgirl -- Shinmaru. ^_~ There was another article in the latest issue of Nintendo Power about The Minish Cap, and I could feel that old excitement creeping back over me as I read it. The same feeling I first got when reading about Ocarina of Time way back when, and every other Zelda game since. Nothing else does it like Zelda does. Though I skipped past the walkthrough section of the article (I like to get through the dungeons myself), reading about the backstory and some of the cool features/items was enough to nearly get me shaking with excitement. I'm really looking forward to seeing how The Minish Cap ties in with the two Four Swords games; we're finally getting a direct prequel to Four Swords, whereas Four Swords Adventures was a direct sequel. And that should complete Vaati's storyline, though I have a feeling the Four Swords line will continue, even if they don't bring back Vaati -- the story was conveniently left open at the end of FSA. You know something interesting about the Four Swords storyline, though? It fits together all nice and neat in itself, but it's a bugger to try and fit into a complete Zelda timeline, heh. I'm still waiting to play The Minish Cap and see what ties it has to the rest of the Zelda series before even trying to write up any sort of timeline. Hopefully it'll have at least a few, because Four Swords had absolutely none, and the ones in FSA were few, far between, and really vague. Worse even than the Oracle games were in that regard, heh. Something positive about the Four Swords storyline, though, is that it does actually fit together nicely within itself. You know, there's never been three directly linked Zelda games before. LOZ/AOL, LTTP/LA, OOT/MM, OOT/TWW, OOS/OOA. ... Notice how there are only pairs? (I don't count OOT/MM/TWW as one, since we have no idea how MM is linked to TWW other than chronological order.) But now we have TMC/FS/FSA, and also, the new GCN Zelda looks to continue the OOT/TWW line. This trend is something I'm really enjoying. A huge storyline spanning hundreds of years, told through multiple games, is pretty much what the Zelda series is, but now that they're actually making some effort to connect the games' stories, it feels much ... bigger, I guess. Whereas the earlier Zelda games have been largely disconnected from the rest of the series and felt kind of like the same story being told over and over again (LOZ, LTTP, OOT, TWW, you know?), when there are connections being made, it feels more like one big story spanning Hyrule's history and each game gives you another glimpse at that history. The gameplay has and hopefully always will be the core of the Zelda series, but having more complete and detailed stories in the games does add to the overall enjoyment of the series. So as much as I like piecing together the clues to try and fit the games together into a timeline, I'm liking the more cohesive storylines even more. ... I wonder how people I just lost in all the talk about storylines.
2.
DAMNIT! Motion to ban Inu500 and Tigervx. They don't know what they're talking about, don't listen to them they're... They're crazy! Yeah, that's it. You don't wanna listen to crazy people do you? No, that's what I thought. But seriously, I agree with everything James said and he may as well just delete everyone elses posts, close the thread and put his post in real big writing. I really can't think of anything to say that hasn't been said here so I'll just leave this, a useless post on a great thread...
You know, I'm not too inclined to ban Inu500 when he's at least adding to the discussion. Unlike someone here. And Takuya, watch the flaming. Pointing out that an opinion is based on misinformation is one thing. Insulting a person for holding that opinion is quite different, and there's no call for that.
3. Hmm, I see this is only your second post in the Play It forum, so I'll give you a run down of how things work here. First off, it's important that you read the How to post in Play It thread at the top of the forum. There are some rules that apply only to the Play It and Anime Lounge forums relating to thread creation, which you should be aware of. And also, there's a Favorite Thread Guidelines sticky, providing more detailed examples for posting favorite threads. Okay, so next up, there's already a couple threads for the things you're asking about. For your question about .hack//INFECTION, you should post in the .hack Video Games thread. It might also be a good idea to be more specific about where you're stuck, so that people will have an easier time helping you -- more details are always better. Second, if you're curious about what peoples' favorite games are, you should check out the Your Favorite Video Game thread. And lastly, if you'd like to talk about snow days, that sort of thing belongs in the Otaku Lounge forum, where there may or may not already be a recent thread on the subject. To find out, you can use the search function to quickly find any similar threads. Have fun. ^_^ Thread Closed
4. I really doubt cartridge size will be an issue at all. I mean, you can get 512 MB flash cards, so I think if a game really needs the space, Nintendo will be able to get larger capacity cartridges. Also, just because GCN discs can hold 1.5 GB doesn't mean AC was actually anywhere near that size. In fact, I think it's small enough that the entire game is loaded into the GCN's memory when you play it. I've heard that you can actually take the disc out while you're playing and the game will keep running.
5. I've merged this thread with the original PSP/DS comparison thread. And also, just to let people know, there are also theads for discussing the Nintendo DS and PSP specifically by themselves, while this thread is for comparing the two and talking about which you prefer, etc. I suppose I kind of agree with Sciros here about the PSP's battery life; I also mainly just play my handhelds at home, or somewhere else where there's access to a power socket. But still, there are times when I don't have access to one, or else it's inconvenient to take the AC adapter with me, and only having two or so hours of play time would be really annoying. For some, a short battery life may not limit the system's portability all that much, but for others it will really hinder it, depending on where they're going to be using the system the most. Though regardless, I won't be getting a PSP for quite some time, if ever. First, because I just won't have the money when it's released; second, none of the games that I've heard about for it interest me all that much; third, I'll be playing my DS and spending my money on games for it instead. So it'll pretty much be the same situation as with the GCN/PS2. I got the GCN just after launch, but waited a few years until I could get a PS2 really cheap, since there were a lot more games on the GCN that I wanted. I plan on getting a DS later this week with Super Mario 64 DS, the first game on the system that I can't wait to play. Along with that, I'm really looking forward to Metroid Prime Hunters, Animal Crossing DS, the new FF: Crystal Chronicles game that's been announced, the new side scrolling Mario game, and the new Zelda: Four Swords that's been announced. That's already six games I'm excited about.
6. I take it you haven't seen the other caption games going on right now...? There's already one in Otaku Lounge, as well as one here in Play It for video game screen shots. 7. This is one of the upcoming DS titles that I'm most looking forward to. I'm definitely getting it when it's released. ... Though I suppose I'll need a DS first. But hopefully that will be coming in a week or so. I got Animal Crossing on the GCN in January 2003 I think it was, a few months after it was released, and was instantly hooked. I remember a friend of mine had gotten AC and brought it over for me to try out. So after playing for a few hours, I was like, "MUST HAVE MORE!" and went out the next day and bought it myself. Thus began a four month addiction of playing the game very nearly every day for at least an hour or so, and since then I've come back and continued playing every now and then. So, having those memories of my first experience with Animal Crossing floating around in my brain, I can't wait to get my hands on Animal Crossing DS and start all over again. Not only just to start a new village and play around with all the new stuff that they'll be adding, but also for the wireless aspect. Visiting other peoples' villagers in AC was always such a pain, what with all the memory card swapping, but from what I've heard, it seems like you'll just be able to connect to another person's DS, hop on the train or whatever, and you'll be in their village. And yeah, my family just got a wireless router for Christmas, so if ACDS does get online support, I'll also have a wireless hotspot right at home to play from. Visiting other OB members' villages would be awesome.
8. The Xbox did pretty much just ride on Halo's success for a good while after launch, but I doubt Microsoft is going to be able to rely on a Halo 3 to do the same thing for the Xbox 2. Halo 2, from everything I've heard, was a let down for a lot of people, so Halo 3 would have to be pretty dang amazing to pull off the same thing for the Xbox 2. Because really, I think the reason Halo did so well was because, at the time, there wasn't much else in the console FPS genre that was all that good. So if people already have Halo and/or Halo 2 for their Xbox, and Halo 3 isn't a major step forward, why should they drop $300+ on an Xbox 2 for something that's not much different from what they already have? As for whether or not the Xbox 2 will ultimately be successful, I have no idea. But I don't think Halo 3 alone will keep it alive by itself. Oh, and where was it reported that Nintendo is dropping the control cross and A/B buttons for the Revolution? I haven't heard anything about that, and I find it hard to believe that they're going to drop them entirely. I mean, look at the DS; they added a bunch of new input devices, but you've still got all the classic SNES buttons. I figured the Revolution would follow that same principle of keeping the old while adding the new. Like James though, I don't think any of the new systems will be complete failures. If you look at the current generation of systems, everything but the N-Gage has done well (and like we didn't see that one coming), and so far, I don't see any particular reason why any of the next generation systems won't also do well. There are various reasons you could speculate over as to which might be the most successful, sure, but just because a system isn't on top doesn't mean it's failing.
9.
1.) Cecil-FFII-The dark night that has no heart in the beginning. He finally gets wary of the king later when he discovers that he is plotting something. The story behind this character is so intriguing. There is no positive yes or no of the character. Once you start understanding the knight in the story he becomes the Paladin. This is his coolest form. I like the purple hair and the goggles. (nice touch).
Finally, another Cecil fan! It's nice to know that someone else sees the same qualities in his character that I do. His story really is pretty interesting, and in fact, I like the character development in FFIV just as much as any of the later games in the series. But, uh, goggles? He wears a helmet as a dark knight and a circlet as a paladin. Cid is the one with goggles, heh.
10.
Well I looked around here for a thread simular like this one and the only one that seemed like it was only a thread on what it has and this and that.
You can ignore that. We have one thread per game in the Play It forum, and all questions/discussion about that game goes in the one thread. If someone is going to create a game-specific thread, they don't have the authority to limit what can be talked about in it. I've merged the threads, and edited that bit out of the first post.
11.
This topic reminded me of an old PA comic, it pretty much sums it all up. http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2004-03-19
Heh, I was just waiting for someone to link to that comic. That's one of my favorites. I've been playing PlanetSide a lot lately, but most of the people I've talked to in game have been pretty cool. There was this one guy that I accidentally team killed while bombing some enemies that was kind of pissed, but other than that, everyone seems to be decently friendly. (Most people seem to realize that accidental friendly fire just happens occasionally, and they deal with it.) Unless you're in a BFR, and you run into an anti-BFR whiner. But I don't pilot BFRs, so I haven't had to worry. It's mainly just on the PlanetSide forums that people trash talk. Kind of funny to read, sometimes. People can get so upset over stupid little things.
12. Sorry, but this thread isn't cutting it. Please take a look at the Favorite Thread Guidelines sticky thread at the top of the forum for details on keeping favorite threads up to the standard of quality required here at OtakuBoards. I don't think there's was ever any real reason to buy Yellow/Crystal/Emerald, unless you missed the first two versions in the series or you're completely obsessed and have money to spare. Or, in other words, if you're the type that buys both initial versions in a set. Though I think there was more reason to get Yellow than any of the others. (No, I'm not biased just because I own Yellow, so hear me out, heh.) The reason being, you got Pikachu as your starter Pokémon, but then you also got all three of the normal starters later in the game. Being able to field Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise all in the same fight was fun. Plus, Pikachu was made stronger, so it's actually a kick butt electric type in Yellow. By the time I got to the Elite Four, my Pikachu's Thunder attack could KO Lance's Gyarados in a single hit, as well as most of Loreli's water type Pokémon.
14. I'm glad Zelda: Four Swords Adventures got recognized, at least. I think it's been really underrated, compared to some of the other big-name GCN titles. Personally, I like it more than The Wind Waker, which was hyped way more than FSA. Other than that, though, I haven't actually played any of the games on the list, so I can't really comment.
15.
Is this just a MGS thread or can we discuss the original Metal Gear titles as well?
Yeah, I took the "Solid" out of the title so that the thread could include all of the Metal Gear games. On the off chance that someone would actually want to talk about the older games, heh.
16.
And the bread? The soundtrack, all the way. ^_~ I unwaveringly agree with Siren on that whole deal--I just love the idea of 2D platformers taken to the next level, especially Metroid! I mean, I look at games like Paper Mario and Mischief Makers and it's an instant grab for me, lol. But I still would like to see Return of Samus come to the GBA. :( I can't find that game anywhere at a reasonable price. And think of me as odd, picky, or whatever...for some reason, I do a lot better with platformers with good graphics than old ones, like Game Boy and NES. :p So yeah, if they re-did Metroid, they may as well do the Return of Samus.
I've been wanting a 2D console Metroid game since the Nintendo 64. If they did one for the GCN, I'd be even more amazed than I was with Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, I have no doubt. And that's saying a dang lot. I can just imagine what they could do with cinematics, using 3D graphics set on a 2D plane. In Zero Mission, they had little cutscenes, such as just before the Kraid and Ridley fights begin, where it flashed from in-game graphics, to the cutscene, and back to in-game. On a console, they could just have the view zoom in and around for a different angle, then sweep back out to the side-scrolling view when the action starts again. It wouldn't be a big thing, but I think that would be a cool little touch, even for things like saving your game or downloading an area map. And I know what you mean about doing better in newer games, Serena; I'm the same way. Though for me, at least, I don't think it has so much to do with the graphics themselves as with play control. For example, playing the original Super Mario Bros. (as good as its play control is for an old NES game) seems kind of clunky now, after having played Super Mario World so much. But, I can go back to SMB3 and feel right at home with that, since its play control is pretty much on par with SMW, despite its graphics being not nearly as good. And I think it's the same thing with Metroid. To me, the original Metroid's controls don't seem nearly as tight and responsive as those of Super Metroid or either GBA game, and I've never been able to get as good at the original Metroid as I am at the others.
17. I give this chapter two boots up! ... *falls on my butt for lack of grounded feet* ... No one says a word, or else there'll be some serious nad kickage. >_>
18. No matter how much abuse he took from Peach's frying pan, DK just couldn't stop trying to get in on with some funky monkey love.
19. I would really love a remake or re-release of Metroid II: Return of Samus, since it's the only game in the series I've never gotten to play. I'd buy that in an instant, regardless of whether or not it was a stand-alone port or a remake with the original version as an unlockable. And true, Super Metroid is a bit tricky for porting onto the GBA because of its control scheme, simply because the GBA doesn't have enough buttons to accommodate the control scheme as it is on the SNES. But still, I think it could be done -- it would just be a bit awkward in some parts of the game. (Which I don't think would be too bad, considering the weapon selecting in Super Metroid is already awkward.) Basically, they'd have to use the Zero Mission control scheme and have the Grappling Beam and X-Ray Scope as selectable weapons alongside Missiles and Super Missiles, to be used with the B button while holding down the R button. Like I said in a myOtaku post a while back, though, to really make a 2D Metroid control scheme as intuitive as it could be, you need three or four shoulder buttons. Especially if there's lots of secondary weapons/tools like the Grappling Beam and X-Ray Scope, making a lot of things to toggle through.
20.
Currently, no one knows, but probably not. Japanese cell phones are really advanced when you compair them to US phones. Most US phones wouldn't be able to handle it.
Eh, I don't know about that. I've heard that Nvidia is developing some graphics chips for cell phones that are supposed to be pretty dang good. I think if Square Enix wants to release the game in the US, there will be phones to play it on.

I wouldn't really be surprised if D/P are compatible with R/S/E and FR/LG, actually. I mean, the DS does have a GBA cartridge slot, so it's not like there wouldn't be any way to link the games up, even though the DS doesn't have an EXT. port for link cables. And there's also the possibility of the DS being able to interface with the GBA Wireless Adapter, for linking with FR/LG. Most of all, though, I hope they do let you battle/trade online at WiFi hotspots. That, I think, would probably attract a good number of people to the game that otherwise might not bother, after all the previous installments. Myself being one of them. Not since the days of R/B/Y have I gotten to battle another real person -- not a single time with G/S/C, and I only know one person that owns Sapphire, so that wouldn't even be worth it to get Ruby or FR/LG -- so being able to battle people online would really spark my interest. Another thing I'm hoping for is that you'll be able to catch every Pokemon just between Diamond and Pearl. If they try and milk the franchise even more, in the same way they did with R/S, FR/LG, and Colosseum, I'm really going to be pissed. You could catch all 250 of the original set just between Red and Blue, and you could catch all of the new 100 or so Pokemon just between Gold and Silver, and they better go back to that. You shouldn't have to trade between five games to be able to get every Pokemon.
22.
I must say that there are actually points where you can get stuck completely without the proper beams. I remember one tunnel where there were two light doors but I didn't have any light ammo once I was inside... the only enemies inside of the tunnel were unbeatable. I was forced to reset, which was quite aggravating.
Um ... couldn't you have just charged up a shot to open the doors? I haven't actually run out of ammo yet to try this, but when I got the Light and Dark Beams, it said that if you run out of ammo, you can charge up to fire a normal shot with them. Which I figured was for exactly that sort of situation, where you're stuck in a room with only light/dark doors and no ammo, since it wouldn't really be useful in combat.
23. I moved this to the tech support forum, since the thread is asking for help on myOtaku. And I also edited your post a bit, Dragon Warrior, so your HTML code would show up, since HTML is allowed in this forum. A couple things, though, that I should point out about Dragon Warrior's HTML there. First off, do not use the hidden="false" attribute. This can screw up the displaying of the little control bar. Instead, just leave the hidden attribute out altogether, and the control bar will still show up. Second, though not required, it's good to also use a closing </embed> tag. This is the code I use for embedding midis and mp3s: <embed src="URL HERE" width="175" height="16" autostart="false" loop="true" volume="50%"></embed> The width and height of the control bar, as well as the default volume, you can set to whatever you want, as well as whether it will loop automatically. I just wouldn't recommend setting autostart to "true," as that can be very annoying.
24. In multiplayer, the weapons have set spawn points, same as missiles and energy, but which weapon you'll get out of the box that spawns is random, and there are several points where the boxes appear. So yeah, no weapon camping. Also, the various special abilities that you can get for a limited time (such as unlimited missile ammo, the Death Ball ability, and the Hacker Mode ability) from stepping onto certain pads are randomized -- and there doesn't seem to be a limit on how many people can grab abilities from the pads in a certain period of time -- so you never know what you'll get.
25. Yeah, maybe someone doesn't have a GCN or a NES, but they can still play Metroid as part of Zero Mission, once they beat the normal difficulty mode. That's how I finally played all the way through the original Metroid, after stopping on the version in Metroid Prime. About Contra, though, I think they might end up releasing it. They released a Classic NES Series version of Castlevania, which is also by Konami, so I don't see anything stopping them. Also, for Crystalis, Nintendo re-released it on the GBC a while back. You might try looking for a copy of that, if you want a portable version of the game.
