1. I like manga, yes, but I would never say it's the best kind of book you can read. It certainly is different, with the fact that it's written in a similar style to a book yet has the look of a comic, but really, if you think that manga could be more preferred over a novel, let's say, than you obviously haven't had much quality reading in your lifetime. Now before you all start typing out hate mail, I'm only giving my opinion, and I haven't really read any manga that I would prefer over a nice thick book. Also, Dragonracer said that manga has more imagination and fantasy than books written in America. You probably just haven't been reading the right books, because to this day, I have not found a manga that could be put before a good old fashioned picture-less book. No, I don't have anything against manga, I like it just as much as any of you here. I just don't hold it over all other forms of literature. I do have some favorites though: FAKE Legal Drug Kill me, Kiss me Immortal Rain Les Bijoux INVU Hot Gimmick Demon Diaries
2. Let's see if I can remember any. Name-Meaning Akiko-Autumn Child Haruko-Spring Child Yoruto-Night Song, I beleive. Chiyo-Eternal Kei-Rapture, Reverance Machiko-Thankful Child Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head, hope it helps a bit.
3.
Which type do you prefer?
I personally like many different types, but I can't really find anything I prefer more than your basic shoujo classification of drama/romance/comedy. Or if it's a yaoi/shounen-ai, like FAKE.
4.
I have never had a problem with slow moving storylines. Haibane Renmei for example could be considered an anime with a slow moving story line. I really enjoyed this anime. Though slow moving i still find it well done. and if this is anything like Haibane Renmei, which it is not I mean story movement wise, It will be amazing in the second half.
I liked Haibane Renmei, and slow storylines don't always bother me. It's how dry the story is. But like I said, I will keep reading it, because it really does have a chance at getting better as a story.
5.
Thread: Do you belive in ghosts, dragons, gnomes, faeries ect.?
I don't beleive in dragons, gnomes, or fairies, but I do think that there are some ghosts out there, in a sense. I think a lot of the sightings and such that you hear about are human's minds playing tricks on them, and people trying to draw attention to themselves. I don't think ghosts are just people who have died tragic deaths, or those out for revenge. And I don't think they are entirely physical either. I think that ghosts are out there, I don't really think they are able to do many things. I think of them more as having the ability to alter human emotion, and in certain places the emotional enviroment of the area. I'm more of a realist, but I've always been interested in the supernatural, albeit how little I actually beleive in.
6.
Any opinions on any of these Mangas?
MARS-One of my personal favorites, I really did enjoy this. Snow drop-Eh. It was alright. It bored me a little. More cliches than a family Christmas. Peach Girl-The worst manga I have ever had the misfortune to read. The main character (name?) annoyed me to death. It was like
"OMG! the guy I've loved for like, forever hates me because I'm so tan and all the like old men hit on me in the street because they think I'm so pretty!"
Don't know if that counts as a spoiler. I'll just be safe. Anyways, yeah. It was just a really shallow manga. Sorry for the rant, and if you enjoy it, that's fine with me. I just dislike it at a very high level.
7.
Am I not the only one here that LOVES this Manga? I love it so much.
I started reading this when it first came out. I'm incredibly thankful I didn't waste my money on it. The storyline itself is one of the slowest I've seen yet and is fairly dry. The art is sketchy, inconsistant, and isn't that good to begin with. I picked up the first volume and after reading the discription, seeing the front, and thinking that it actually had a decent name, I read it. I was dissapointed too. I've continued reading it when I stop by the bookstore and have read up to the fourth volume in hopes that the story will speed up a bit and improve with time. It really hasn't.
8. I'm reading "Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank at the moment. A friend recomended it to me. It's set in the 1960's, and the story starts out with Randy Bragg, a kind of "player" who lives in Florida. His braother is in the military and has suspicions of a coming nucleur war. Randy meets with his brother and is told this. His brother tells him that if anything happens like this he'll send him a telegram with the words alas, Babylon on it. The brother tells Randy to take care of his wife and kids and then leaves. A few days later he gets the telegram. I'm awful at summaries, but this story is shaping up to be something. I'm about three quarters of the way through and the plot is a litle dry, but I'm anticipating a good ending. The story as well as the characters are beleivable and Frank does an excellent job of portraying different personalities' reactions to disaster. I picked up the book thinking it would be some cheesy sci-fi novel. I mean, it was nucleur war. But it actually isn't that bad. Something else I'm starting on is "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. I've heard good things about this book so I'll keep reading. it was hard to keep my attention on it at first, but it's getting better.
9. The shading is definately good. On the first one you need to work on the face. It was a little lop-sided and a bit wide. But yes, it was quite good overall.
10. I've read what volumes I can find. I thought it was a little eh, but I'm not to easily taken by this specefic genre of manga. I don't know, it seemed a little like a fanfiction written by some rabid fangirl. I could see it as I read. School girl meets hot guy from popular band and they fall in love! Well, to each his own, I guess my mind and opinion of such things has been tainted by all the horrific results of fanfictions with nearly identical plots.
11. Is it still possible to join? I know I'm about a month and a half late, but I'd love to. Maybe I could start when the next book is chosen? =D?
12. While I don't usually read or buy pop-manga/anime, I did read this. I would highly suggest it too. It takes a lot for me to go out and blow 120$ at once and I did this when I bought the anime after reading the manga (or what's available here, that is.) It's incredibly funny, dark, and sweet all at once. And is easily one of my favorites. I wouldn't say that it's strictly a "girl's" manga, as it's nothing like some of the others I've read. Anyways, if I can enjoy reading boy's manga, then what's keeping guys from doing the same only vice-versa? I would definately read through it if not buy it.
13. I like it. It doesn't seem to have much of a plot, but what is there is quite different from anything I've ever read or heard of before. There really isn't much here to comment on. You seem to have everything slightly developed, but you don't really have enough on it for me to say anything else.
14. The characters: have overused personalities, all of which are boring. If you're going to barrow a personality, at least pick better ones. The Plot: is literally non-existant. You posted so little on the gist of the story that there isn't anything here to comment on. I don't know why, but for some reason I get the feeling I've read this before. Maybe it's the fact that you've mixed plots from several different manga and anime series, added in some empty drivvle and called it your own.
15. I don't actually own any manga. I prefer to spend time at random bookstores reading them. So I'll post some manga that I've read. Demon Diaries: This made me laugh and I just liked the overall story. And Kara's art is amazing. Hot Gimmick: I've fallen for another twisted shoujo romance. But the story is addicting, and I love the characters. Immortal Rain: It's a little different from what I usually read, but from the story so far, it shows some promise. I like it. FAKE: I loved this. It was hilarious, and as the yaoi fan I am, I couldn't put it down. I've re-read it so many times. This could easily be my all time favorite. Kill Me, Kiss Me:
16.
I was wondering how you all would suggest starting from the very beginning? Thanks.
Try tracing. Just take a drawing from a manga and lay tracer paper or thin lined paper over it and draw the basic outline. I really lets you get a feel for what it should be like and it's not as discouraging as drawing your own on the first try. After that try focusing on one point of the drawing. The eyes were always hardest for me so I spent time drawing eyes over and over again. Just choose where to start and draw nothing but that subject. Work hard at getting the general shapes before you work on details. And don't expect it to be perfect the first time you try. It takes practice. Hope this helps a bit and good luck.
17. This really does remind me a lot of Inuyasha. Which isn't a good thing. The whole collect the pieces, have a pure heart so you can have the sword, fight the demons thing is very generic. It actually sounds more like you took many different popular themes of many different anime, added them all together, and called it original. I'm not trying to sound as offensive as I know I do, I'm just stating my opinion on this.
