1. Hi I'm another one that had a login years ago and forgot about the site for a while - travelling the world will do that to you! Luckily for me I remembered my login, it's great to read back over things that were being talked about 4 years ago when I was active, and see what's going on now too :)
2. My co-workers gave me a theme song... and I'd have to agree it's fairly accurate! It also happens to be by my favourite band - Matchbox Twenty, the song is Unwell. They tagged me with the line "I'm not crazy I'm just a little unwell' and then they decided maybe I am just crazy - or a perfectionist either way, the song really does suit me! :D
3. I'm with bloodseeker - I own the originals and really can't justify buying the platinum - but I will probably eventually when they have the box set! I've not been able to find a compelling reason to buy the platinum - although if someone has both and can tell me a reason the platinum are better to own I would appreciate it. It seems a bit like they just want us to spend more money... and eventually I suppose will succumb :animesigh
4. I am going to Japan in 8 weeks (yay!) :D and the first thing I have planned to do (other than passport, food etc etc) is see the Studio Ghibli museum. However that is happening on the 4th day I'm there so the first thing I'm going to do is visit a tourist information place and pick up a museum book. Apparently they give you discount vouchers for lots of museums. Then I'm going to find the closest museum and start seeing things :)
5. It would kill me to have to choose one series but I think I'd be either Neon Genesis Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop. If you like a bit of comedy, a bit of action, well developed characters and a good story line the Cowboy Bebop is a good series to watch. It's a group of bounty hunters travelling around the solar system trying to make some money. There are some ongoing story lines that resurface now and again and it has a definate ending. You may also like Trigun. There is a fair bit of fighting, kind of 'old west' style but there's also a very peaceful message being portrayed. It's hard to describe what it's about without giving away important story information. I would say it's about 2 girls who work for an insurance company and are trying to stop the 'humanoid typhoon' from creating further havoc. It's quite funny and sweet in parts. Evangelion has been described in good detail by others. It is going to be something you either love or hate - but try and get through the whole series before you decide! Dagger - you should watch End of Evangelion. I also loved the end of the series and the movie just enhanced the feeling rather than ruin it!
6. Interestingly a workmate of mine saw my Tokyo Babylon manga I'd just bought and said 'You really are a geek!!' Now I openly call myself a geek - and I work at an Internet company so being a 'geek' is something to be proud of. Also my workmate did not use it in at all a deregetory way and was extremly interested in the manga. It just struck me that someone who wasn't into anime/manga tagged it as something that appeals to the 'geeks' at my work. She's right - it does, there are more people from the Internet industry that I know that love anime than from any other group of people I've spoken to! just an aside, within our Industry there is stereotyping - 'geeks' are defined by being great with computers and having non mainstream interests - but still kinda cool!
7.
I've done computer tech support and I remember when the Blaster virsus hit, we were so busy helping people get their computer working again.
I used to work in tech support and I don't think I have ever worked so hard as I did when the blaster virus hit! It was hell. From that day alone I have cursed all people who create virus's. I don't understand what the thrill is ooo you created something that caused millions of people to get peeved and yell at the poor tech's that are just trying to help  Anyways it now seems that spyware is the new thing people like to build. Our tech guys spend half their time recommending spyware removal programs just so customers can get their machines functioning so they can use the Internet again. I'm with you SunfallE, I think there are companies out there that are causing problems so people will buy their software to fix it.... I just wish they'd give us some of the profit's for recommending them ;)
8. This thought was triggered by Dagger's Howls Moving Castle post about who is voicing the English dub - but it's not really about that anime so I thought I'd start a new post :animesmil I don't know that I'm a big fan of well known 'real life movie' actors doing voice acting for anime. I'm actually not a fan of well known actors doing voices for any animation come to that. It always feels like their personality moulds the character. I know in the US most animations have the voices recorded first and the animation drawn later so they often design the drawings around the actors personalities. Usually in Japan the animation is done first and the voice actor has to fit to suit it. Which means that character is who the writers/designers want it to be - without being influenced by an actor. It would be interesting to see how Howls turns out given that it has some big name Western actors doing the English dub - I'm just concerned it will take away from the story. Maybe it's just me! Do you think it matters if well known 'real life movie' actors voice the dubs for anime?
9. This does not bode well for me ... I'm moving to England in a few months. Thankfully my sister has a multi region DVD player (so we can play region 4 (aus) and region 2 (uk)) I guess I'll be importing anime from the US. Not such a bad thing as there is a lot available in the US that is not available in Aus. It's sad though that it seems no one in the UK has picked up on what a big market it could be.
10. I'm not sure what you're looking for when you say 'Out of the ordinary' I think they're all very much out of the ordinary in a lot of ways. You've got the obvious thing of they all
are cursed and turn into animals of the zodiac
but also their personalities are very strong and
often very confronting, usually Ayame and Ritsu make me recoil from the screen and turn down the sound!
Now if you asked me who I thought was the most ordinary of the four of them I would vote Shigure. He seems realtively
sane and controlled, even though he is obsessed with high school girls!:animesigh
11. Personally from what I've read and heard in interviews it seems to me that Pope Benedict was elected as a Pope who will not make any major changes to the church during his time. He is keeping the same administration and has said he wishes to continue to work to achieve unity between religions. Other members of the conclave have stressed he will not be a political pope - as in he will continue to keep religion out of countries politics. Had they elected other members to the Papcy there was the risk of the world taking it as a political statement and the church does not want that at this point in time. He seems a respected man with good values and I think we'll see that it was not a bad decision. just so you know where I'm coming from I have a group of friends and we make it a regular thing to study current affairs and debate the issues so I've read a fair amount about Pope Benedict XVI. I renounced my Catholisism over 10 years ago and avoid any links to organised religion, I'm an agnostic. Of our group we have 2 Catholics, a Muslim and a non denominational Christian so it's been an interesting discussion.
12. Well Retribution. For you I see strength of will and strength of character. You are a warrior and will avenge the ones you love. Although others hold you in high regard, you seek to better yourself and constantly challenge yourself to be centred and controlled. hope you like it - I do love your avatar it fits with your sig very nicely :animeshy:
13. waaah I'm type A! I wonder what it is about Type A that's bad. There may be things about a person that if you knew before you actually got to know them might turn you off - mainly because there are stereotypes about everything and although you don't think it affects you subconsciouly it often will. Most people overcome the stereotype - if they bother to get to know the person - because stereotypes are never really applicable. I've had people ditch me when they find out that I'm a geek. as in I love computers, I program, I work for an Internet company and I'd rather play with a spreadsheet than go to a party. But for the ones that stick around they discover that is only part of who I am and there is a lot more to me than that. I am guilty of turning away from people for a stupid reason. The primary one has been I don't date people from Melbourne. This one I think came from the fact that I have social anxiety (yes I know, geek ;) ) and it's easier to have a quasi relationship with someone that you don't have to see very much. After rereading that I've really determined that we can avoid people due to perceived personalities - not due to uncontrollable physical attributes. well this turned into a long post so I'm stopping now - but yes, it seems crazy not to get to know someone just cause they have a certain thing that is beyond their control!
14. I have two favourite songs. The first is from Cowboy Bebop - Call Me Call Me. It's so sweet and such a sad part of the show
everything's coming to an end and Ed and Ein leaving
it always brings tears to my eyes. The second is the opening song in Lain - Duvet. I can't tell you what it is about this song, but it makes me feel very sad and alone.
15. Thanks for the recommendations :) His and Her Circumstances has just been released in Australia and is pretty easy to buy so I think I might start with that one. The fact that Dagger thinks it has a good dub is a bonus as I tend to watch my anime dubbed so I don't have to concentrate as much ;) I have Ah My Goddess the movie which is very sweet - it is a very 'love triangle' type of story. I'm glad to hear the series is good and hopefully I can buy it soon.
16. I'm looking for some new anime and am in the mood for things with romance... but I don't know what to buy! So I'm looking for your help. I own some, one of which is Fushigi Yuugi. This is a great romantic story, spanning to over 50 episodes. It is the story of two girls from modern day Japan who are pulled into an ancient Chinese book - "The Universe of the Four Gods" They become main characters and the anime is the story of what happens to them and how they change as people. The relationships between characters develop over the series and between these and the interaction with other characters and situations you see every possible emotion run through people. If you know of any good romantic anime - or anime that are of a diffference genre but have a good romantic story then I'd love to hear about them and why you think they're good cheers
17. 1. Age:- 25-30 2. Gender:- female 3. Where are u from? (nationality, country) Australia 4. How did u come across anime? - Other_________________ I watched shows like Astro Boy as a kid not knowing they were Japanese - I first watched something that I knew was 'anime' around 1995 and it was introduced to me by a friend 5. Do you think Anime influences u as a person? Explain not particularly. I don't act certain ways because of what's in the anime. However liking anime is a big part of who I am. 6. Research shows that anime is increasingly popular with the western world. Why do you think this is so? I think it's become more accessible to people. There are also more mainstream tv channels and movies that are incorporating anime or anime like action. EG The Matrix was a big factor in many people that I know turning to anime. That was a couple of guys who made movies and liked anime taking it to a wider audience. The more people that like anime the more they show it to and the more that ultimately like it. I think the audience will continue to increase. 7. What attracts you to anime? -Other_____________________ Please explain your answer As it is animated it's not constricted in the same way live action films are. It is possible to do things that humans physically can't. Most directors/writer etc use this to enable them to enhance the stories they're telling. I find most western animation to be humour based and often obvious or crude humour which I don't find interested (there are exceptions and there is some western animation I like) Anime has many styles and the stories are all varied and no I don't like all anime. 8. Is your interest in Anime, in any way related to an interest in Japan or to learn about Japenese society? I have an interest in Japan and Japanese society - it is not related to my interest in anime in any way other than anime is a facet of Japanese society. It is not the reason I'm interested in Japan. 9. Have you taken a Japanese language class or been to Japan? I take Japanese lessons and am visitng Japan in June 10. Have you learned anything about Japanese culture, and if so, give 3 specific examples? I assume you mean have I learned anything from anime about Japanese culture? If so the answer is no I have learnt much about Japanese culture from friends, language teachers and other sources, but I have not taken anything i've seen in anime to be related to their culture. It is an expression of their art more than a reflection of their society. good luck :)
18. Alucard is a good name, but it's true that no matter what name you come up with - as soon as you see the kitten you will change your mind! My cat's have been: Sam - named by her first owner, goodness knows why! Smokey - he's a grey and white and it took us a month to name him Pickles - when he was little he was always 'in a pickle' and it stuck Radical Edward - he was a ginger with huuuge eyes and lighter fur around them that looked like goggles, he made me think of Ed from Cowboy Bebop :) My friends black cat is koneko : named when her sisters boyfriend - who is Japanese - called out koneko to it and it went to him Other friends have two black dogs, licquorice and voodoo which I think are pretty cool names for black animals. You'll have to let us know what you call it :animesmil
19. For me it has to be Legato. The cool calm collectedness of him is just pure evil. I've never seen a villain quite so villainous!
20.
Are women really that "second-class" still in Japan? I really thought it was as liberal as it was here. Also, r2vq, are you saying that's why anime is sexist, or are you just providing reasons for the few animes that are sexist?
I don't know that 'second class' is the best way to describe it. It's a different culture with different ideals to America (and Europe and Australia etc). I have met many Japanese females who ceased working as soon as they were married to run the house and family. And they do run the house and family! They manage all the money and decision making about the home - and they're happy. I don't know how much of the country agree with the people I've met - but I think when thinking of Japan, and of anime and manga, you do need to keep in mind that they do have different ideals and they create work that will appeal to their culture.
21. Sadly for everyone I don't think anyone is alike so it's not possible to ever understand anyone ever! This is speaking from experience - of all the people in the world I think only 2 truly know me and they don't try to understand me anymore. I am a person that has 2 faces - the one I show the world and the one I keep locked up inside and try not to let anyone see. So - in answer to the question 'what makes women tick, what can you do to sweep them off their feet' well, for me personally you'd need to be able to know when I'm down and hug me.... the trick being to know when I'm down cause I never look it! :animesigh For my 3 good friends - you'd have to buy one chocolates and flowers - you'd have to take one out to see good bands - you'd have to be funny and make one laugh So there you have it - 4 girls and the things that are good for one are bad for the others! So, as everyone's said - be yourself - cause then you'll find the person you are compatible with and if the person you think you like doesn't seem interested then you'd probably end up not together anyway. good luck !
22. For some reason - and I have no idea what it is - the drawing styles used in 'anime' are different to the styles used in other 'animation'. Regardless of who and where it was drawn you can usually tell what someone will these days class as 'anime' by looking at the visual aspect. As anime becomes more wide spread (and I don't particularly agree that is more popular that other cartoons - I feel they are still more widely accessible throughout the world) as it spreads to more people the distinction of having to call something 'anime' vs 'cartoon' will fade away. Although given that 'anime' fans go to conventions and dress up and you don't see 'cartoon' fans doing this maybe there will always be that group who define the difference between the styles of animation.
23.
Do you realise, that anime/manga mainly have women with boobs bigger than thier heads wearing skimpy bikinis (eg: love hina) or tight costumes? but you never see many blokes like that. Women are portraid in a slutty way, which is not how some live their lifestyle. If anyone disagrees with me, please say so.
Just getting back to the original question (I hadn't really formed an answer before now!) I'd agree with many that the style of animating girls as posted by Synical is not typical of all anime/manga - and while it may seem 'sexist' to some I feel that in most cases it's not designed to be. As for the portrayal of characters, to me, each anime portrays a character in the most suited style aimed at the viewers they expect to watch it. I enjoy anime that has the male as strong, dark, handsome and the protector of women - yes this is a stereotype but it doesn't make it wrong that I like it. Other people may think this portrayal of a male is wrong as not all man have to be strong and handsome and protecting to be good. I think in the same way some anime are designed with girls that look or act a certain way to fit a stereotype that will attract certain viewers.
24. Sounds like we have a lot of insomniac's here! Yes I am another one. My insomnia is caused by two things - one no one knows why and the other is if I'm worrying about something. When I'm up worrying I often use the computer. I've banned myself from going online though because I tend to just google things to do with the worry - and find more things to worry about! I've found playing The Sims is the best cure for anxiety - you're so focused on making those people have good jobs and friends - and getting angry that they can't - that there is not much room to think of anything else!
25. My favourite movie is Ghost in the Shell. It was the first anime I watched knowing it was anime so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Mainly though the story is solid and the characters are strong. The drawing, animation and colouring really set the mood of the story. Another that stands out for me is Perfect Blue.
I like Perfect blue too, I didnt think a anime could really creep me out which it did. .
I'd have to agree with this. Perfect Blue has an enormous hold over your emotions. Anxiety, suspense and disgust all build - after watching it I had to go find a stupid funny non brain taxing show to watch just to recover!
