1. Anyone who's watched enough anime pretty much knows what I'm talkin' about here. It also easily applies to video games and other forms of entertainment. The drama. Any serious series needs some of it, at least, but sometimes a person's just gotta roll their eyes at the attempts these shows make. Whether it be because of an unbelievable setting, poor developemnt or because there's just been TOO DAMN MUCH OF IT (Evangelion, anyone?), the drama comes off as contrived and tired. In positive cases, however, where this sort of thing is well developed and not over the top, we usually end up with something that could top our favorites list. So what are examples that you guys have of both good and bad drama in anime? Any particular cliches and tropes you've noticed? As I've already referenced in this post, an example of too much drama (not to mention angst) is Evangelion. Yes, I know, everyone always says Eva is way too angsty. Well, frankly, I think it's true. Shinji was always angsting, and towards the end of the series Asuka hopped on the drama train as well. It doesn't help that the direction of the plot was effin' confusing at times. But, a show that I'd say has good drama is Planetes. The show, in case you don't know, is set in 2075 and centers around space exploration. Not only does it have possibly the most realistic take on how far technology will have come by then, but the characters themselves feel very realistic. Most pertinent to this thread is the fact that the drama that is later sparked is overall done well and does not feel uncalled for at all. I mean, come on; when
Ai ends up stranded on the moon with Claire, the moment where her "never harm another human being" and "always love" mantra seemingly cracks and she almost takes Claire's oxygen
is an entirely understandable reaction to the extreme situation and pressure she was under. Plus,
she could have, you know, DIED
.
2. "ESCAFLOWNE! ESCAFLOWNE! ESCAFLOWNEEEE!" *ahem* Yes, well, as you might be able to tell, I'm listening to "DANCE OF CURSE" by Yoko Kanno, from The Vision of Escaflowne anime. Literally makes anything you're doing epic.
3.
I'm not your Boyfriend!!!! D
4. OH NO THERE'S A BATTLE GOING ON OUTSIDE! THERE'S GUNFIRE AND AND--oh wait, no. Those aren't gunshots and cannon blasts, it's only fireworks. Guh. At least dinner was scrumptious, and we're even having pie later. :3
5. It's too hot! I'm a Washington girl, I can't handle 90 degree weather. =n=
6. 1) Off the Wall 2) Gary, Indiana
7. 1) Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy 2) Thriller
8. I shan't be doing a thing. After all, my neighborhood makes enough of a ruckus with their (sometimes illegal) fireworks. Every year, man... always scares the crap out of our dog too. But at least I can look forward to some good food; probably steak. Mmm, steak~
9. So I'm noticing some people own (or know) corgis. I find corgis are adorable and I would love to get one someday. I have a question though for those who've had one before: do they make good pets? Or, is there anything I should know about 'em beforehand? Just curious if there's any advice you could give me.
10.
I don't know about anyone else, but I trip over myself all the time even when I'm not doing anything else (such as screaming) ._.;; But maybe that's just me being clumsy.
Well... I guess I should've clarified and said specifically when girls trip in omg-dangerous situations, it just gets frustrating. It's not an unlikely thing, it just gets old is all.
11. Well... I'm not hungry anymore. Thanks, Indi.
12. I hate when girls trip. Seriously, it's like they can't multitask. If they're screaming, then they can't run properly. I don't mind if it perhaps they're in an environment like a jungle where there's a lot you could trip over, but... jeeeez. Come on, people.
13. 1) "Leave Me Alone" 2) Neverland Ranch in Santa Maria, CA
14. I find the relationship between my two current titles very amusing.
15. 1) Count Dooku 2) Mace Windu 3) Anakin 4) Princess Leia
16.
Geez, woman, let her be happy. No need to crap on her parade just cause you're a grumpy old lady. :animesmil
But I like being a grumpy old lady. :( Seriously though, enjoy it, chibi. (I were only foolin' before.)
17. I pretty much have to concur with Aary here. People probably do it because they think they can get away with it. Also, if you're cheating while in a relationship, then maybe you shouldn't be in that relationship in the first place if you're tempted that easily. Either that or you're too damn greedy.
18.
There's nothing like being 14 during summer! I can eat whatever I want and not gain a thing, I can stay up until dawn and sleep until dinner, and all I need to do is clean up a little around the house! Yes, it sure feels great to be a teenager on summer break...:catgirl:
Oh, you'll get yours someday. Mark my words. Growing up's a *****.
19. I have to echo other people's sentiments in that it's kind of sad he died so young, but I really don't feel anything beyond that. I was never a fan of his music, so there's no attachment there for me.
20. I did a search for a topic like this and didn't find one. But if there was one that I missed, then forgive me. >> Anyway, pets! Ya got 'em? Ya had 'em? Ya love 'em? Ya hate 'em? Share with us OB peeps anything about these little critters. (Pictures are encouraged too, if you have them.) Right now, I have a dog and a cat at home. They're both about nine years old now, although Nick (the dog) still acts like a puppy on a daily basis. Our cat Max used to be an indoors cat, but he peed on various things one too many times so now he lives out back. I love both of them though, and I have to admit that I have a higher affinity for cats than dogs. This is probably due to the fact that, before Nick came along, I had only ever had cats for pets. It also just fits into my personality, I think; cats are there to love and cuddle when you want, but they're independent enough that they won't bother you every second of the day. You can both just go on and do your own thing. Finally, here's a picture of Nick; it's not a very good one, but it's the only one I have on my computer right now. None of Max at the moment, although I'll remedy that later. And now it's time for the rest of you to share with the boards. If'n ya please. :3
21. I hate cleaning. I really do. Especially scrubbing/mopping the laminated floors, and on top of that I have a dog who leaves spots on it all the time which are a pain in the rear to clean. :animeangr
22.
I am curious about watching SZS, but then that means I need to get around to finishing the rest of it first. I don't know why I didn't. It's a little over the top at times, but still amusing to watch.
Same here, Rach. I've needed to finish up SZS for months now, so before I could even think of starting Zan I'd have to watch Zoku and Goku first. I like to be chronological like that. Anyway, based off a glance, I can see at least two series I'll be interested in seeing (eventually). Spice and Wolf II for sure, even if some of the economic talk flies over my head at times, and then the second season of Hetalia once I finally catch up with the first season. XP
