I've discovered recently that I can crack my ankles in the same fashion as my brothers who crack their knuckles/hands. It's an interesting feeling, to say the least.
I can do this too. Except only in my right foot. But I can do the knuckles too. And my neck. ANd my hip at a certain angle. I'm extra cracky.
my mama's great great grandma was paid passage over to America
This actually happened more than you'd think. Irish landowners paid for the passage of a good few Irish peasants, because in the long run it was less costly than having them living on their land, unable to pay rent or to grow anything substantial, due to the microscopic size of the peasant farmers holdings. The governement even paid for scores of Irish to emigrate (mostly orphaned girls). And passage wasn't as astronomical as one might think either. In the years leading up to the famine, competing ship companies were able to lower the price of the trip, and empty trade ships returning to America welcomed the extra income.

So, a conversation with some friends last night yielded some interesting scenarios, and I thought that I'd bring it onto the boards to see what you all thought... If you could hang out with any dead person, for twenty-four hours, from any walk of life; who would it be? What would you do? Why? Now, to clarify, I'm not talking about your BFF from 5th grade who's life was tragically cut short in some bizarre shark attack; that's kida a downer. No, I mean somebody you've never met before and who you'd enjoy chilling with for a day doing whatever you want: Watching TV, parasurfing, sucking down a couple of cold ones. But you can only do things that are within the realms of possibility. For example, you can't go to Jupiter for a picnic with Jimi Hendrix, but you can go to Burger King with him, or go to a cocaine/hooker party with him. You can go to the movies with Abe Lincoln (although he may be a bit paranoid about that), but you probably couldn't skydive with the guy. I think I'd like to go racecar driving with Paul Newman. He was a legendary actor throughout his whole life, and he had a heart of gold. Unlike most megastars, he stuck with his wife rather that bedding strings of beautiful women (although he totally could have). He set up The Hole in the Wall Gang charity for children, after his role in Butch Cassidy. When he caught cancer, he dealt with it personally, and with a quiet dignity, never once whoring himself out to the media. Plus he loved to drive rececars, which is totally badass!

I'm currently making my way through Martin Meredith's 'Diamonds, Gold and War: The Making of South Africa'. Meredith's writing style is both freeflowing and informative, it's an entertaining study for even a casual reader, never getting too bogged down in the technicalities. I would highly reccomend this book to anybody interested in African or British history. Another of Meredith's books, 'The State of Africa: A History of Fifty Years of Independance', is another cracking read, but is a lot broader, encompassing a larger temporal and spatial arena. Also, it does get caught up in tedious economic details midway through, but still I would definatley worth the time. Another book I'm (re)reading is 'The Picture of Dorian Gray'. I've decided that I'm going to take the plunge and watch the film, and want to get reaquainted with this classic first. It's short, sweet and a truly fantastic story. While we're on the subject; has anybody seen the film? Is it worth my time? I've heard mixed reviews. When I get finished with these I've got 'The Long March' by Ed Jocelyn and Andrew McEwan and 'Insomnia by Stephen King on the shelf. Anybody read either of these? I find Stephen King to be a bit hit and miss, but do fancy a bit of guilty pleasure in the next couple of weeks, and this may be the ticket... Don't want to be disappointed though! Also, I'll give 'The Lord of the Flies' my thumbs up. I first read it twenty-odd years ago and still find myself coming back to it time and again.

Oh wow. Probably Super Mario Bros. on the NES, and a couple of others. Some sort of biking game? And Tetris? BUT... one of my friends older brothers owned a Commadore 64, and I have some very vague memories of being allowed have a turn on that every so often. But don't ask me what it was I was playing, for the life of me, I have no recollection. -
I know rugby's not overly popular in the U S of A, but I was wondering if maybe any members have been watching this years competition? Any thoughts on the games played thus far? What are your highlights/lowlights? What are you looking forwards to? Personally I've found most of the games a bit uninspired this year, with the exception maybe of Scotland v France a couple of weeks back. Even though they lost, Scotland put in a good effort. I always like to see Scotland do well, because they always do try so hard, but they're just never quite good enough, and they certainly deserve some wins. Ireland I must say have been appalling, having struggled against an Italian team they should easily have beaten, and played like amateurs against the French. Wales is another team I expected more from. They were such hard hitters over the last few years, but their skills seem diminished in 2010. They were destroyed by England, and although they beat Scotland, the scoreline could have been far different. I've nothing really to say about the English side, they're playing much as I expected. I think the game to watch will be England v Ireland in Twickenham on the 27th.

I do have a story, but it's a bit R-rated... A girl I used to know was performing a favour for her man friend of the time and ended up choking and throwing up on the guy. I hope that's subtle enough, if not feel ffree to get rid of it, but I think it tops any vomit story.
Seriously, he blew my freaking mind last night. I was extremely impressed with everyone that went before him in the medal round, in awe of their talent. And then White stepped up to the plate and I was speechless.
I had to look this up online to see what all the fuss was about. This guy has some serious skills! I will definatley be paying more attention from now on.

I'm not big into winter sports, but I did catch a couple of events. I am surprised by Korea's talent during the skating-racing (real name is?). That's something I wouldn't have expected.

Well, if we're living in a dreamworld, I'm gonna go ahead and say the Maserati 5000 GT. Talk about your ultimate status symbol! And they look like real beasts! Needless to say; "I want one!"

Do games like Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, DBZ Tenkaichi, COD count? Because if they do, my friends and I have notched up countless hours on those. If not, I have been known to be somewhat anal-retentive in getting as close to 100% completion in the FF series (particularly V through X), but who isn't, am I right? And a couple of the Dragonquest games, too. Any RPG worth it's salt usually got a thorough playing. Although, to be fair, those days are well behind me now, and I spend less and less time on a single-player type game, much prefering co-op or multiplayer in general.

There's not really a whole lot of stuff I'm aching to play; I'm felling a little disheartened vis-a-vis video games over the last couple of years. After eagerly awaiting Street Fighter 4,more so than any other game in a long time, I played it for a couple of hours, and haven't been bothered much since. Maybe I was just looking back on the predecessors through rose-tinted glasses, and forgot how many hours of pure frustration they caused me ... Anyways ... There are two games that have made me a little excited: Arkham Asylum and Bioshock 2. I'm saying prayers that I won't be disappointed.

Hmph ... Seems that I've been here since late '05, and have notched up a whopping ... 52 post counts. Fantastic. Although I don't post too often, I do like to keep checking the Anime forums for good suggestions on what to watch, certain members have a decent idea of what's worth keeping an eye on. Also, the Gen. Discussion is always fun to poke around in; you guys be totally off-da-hook.
Early Christians simply tried to overshadow these pagan festivals by having much bigger events and celebrations on the same days.
It was a method of making the transition from Paganism to Christianity easier. Christian explanations were tacked onto traditional Pagan customs, so as not to disrupt them completely. And I think, but I'm not sure, Jesus was born in early to mid-January. Also, real trees win out my lovelies.

Oh guys, it's been out in Europe for a week or so. A friend of mine has it, and by golly! This game is a treat! Graphics, characters, courses, everything! It's a little sensitive, so can get a little stressful when you're toe-to-toe and you turn your wrist that little bit too much. Otherwise . . . SWEET!

I personally think the best thing to do when you're stressed is nothing. Just stop your reading/studying/whatever, and take a breather. Sit down in a comfortable chair and stare off into space. Daydream! Just chill. Stick on some music maybe, or have a cup of tea. I find if I try to read something (for pleasure) after intense study sessions, I always get distracted anyway.I always feel replenished after a mental detox like that. Either that or give yourself over to the devil drink!
