1. It's the same here ChibiHorsewoman. Teen pregnancies do happen a lot, but the majority of them are in the 15-19 age range. Instead of the 12-15 that those two seem to fall under. I wouldn't say it's surprising, but rather sad and I hope it doesn't indicate a shift in kids getting knocked up even younger.

It's a bit off a basis in reality, and, frankly, I am a bit offended that he should presume that I am somehow a worse person because I don't.
And here I always understood that the idea was to not think about superficial details such as one's skin color. You make friends and socialize based on who you get along with. That's how I was raised by my parents. The whole article is, in my opinion, a bit heavy handed on the you should feel guilty since I think you are still racist spiel. I have no doubt that people are since I only have to look at some of my relatives to see it. Some of them are so racist that it's sad. But! I can only see the nation of cowards as a statement directed towards those people who really are. Like the rest of us who don't shut out others, I'm going to ignore the jab since I don't see it as being directed at me anyway. I'm only sorry I can't see some of my relatives reaction to it. I just know they're frothing at the mouth. They already are over the idea of Obama being president and for some reason, I find that terribly amusing. It's like watching five year olds throw a temper tantrum.

I can kind of relate Nathan, as to why you're not interested in it. o_O I lost my brother to a drunk driver when I was fifteen so... it killed any desire I had to drink. So now I'm usually the designated driver for when those few friends I have who do drink, actually go out on the town. Only draw back, one time they had to go and puke in the car. x_X Only good thing about that was it was my friends car and not mine. But man, that was just gross.

Now that they were traveling back to the Island Citadel aboard the smaller Church airship, the Mariette, Elaine had been only too glad to take advantage of her tiny quarters to change back into the more modest dress for a priestess. It was virtually identical but of a simple cotton weave instead of the finer silks she had adorned for performing the wedding ceremony. She felt more at ease in the standard attire though she carefully packed up the precious silk along with the gold fastener and band. Then because she wasn?t ready to rest just yet, she ventured back out to the small lobby. The Mariette was one of the Church?s smaller vessels, and only suited to carrying Church officials about, unlike their larger ones that were designed to carry cargo for dispersing much needed supplies and aid. A handful of the guards were chatting among themselves and she caught snatches of their conversation as they discussed the wedding. After the fuss created by unexpected guests arriving and the already spreading rumors in regards to the Xear culture being brought up, she was not surprised to see them talking animatedly. Elaine spotted Juste and Felix who were off on their own discussing something and she moved to join them. Both of them stood up from the small table next to one of the observation windows when they saw her approaching. ?Priestess,? Felix said formally with a slight bow, Juste doing the same. ?Captain,? She replied just as properly before taking a seat. ?It?s not necessary to address me so formally,? She said kindly when both of them had sat back down. ?Not when all of us are merely relaxing for the long trip home.? ?Perhaps,? Felix agreed. ?Though considering what happened, it?s going to be difficult to simply turn in and get some rest.? It was a sentiment that Elaine had to agree with. She knew perfectly well that the Almagest?s had issues that were often politely ignored. Just as she also knew how much they had worked to help rebuild the country after the terrible revolution. She did not want to judge anyone, that was for the Goddess, but it had still been distressing to have the wedding interrupted by guests that were obviously not wanted. Elaine would like to believe it was merely to wish the newlywed couple well, but mention of the ancient culture Xear was enough to tell her that it was more likely for personal gain. ?Yeah, I wasn?t expecting anything like that.? Juste winced slightly. ?I know mom talks about all the drama between the two families; I just figured she was exaggerating a little. I certainly didn?t mean to upset your sister Felix.? ?I wouldn?t worry over that, there was no way you could have known.? He grinned a bit. ?Bella?s just a little excitable at times.? Elaine couldn?t help but be curious, but she didn?t want to pry either. ?Do you know anything about the Xear Juste?? She asked, politely changing the topic. ?Of course. Out of all the older civilizations, they?re the most elusive and yet most fascinating.? His expression brightened as he warmed to the topic. ?I?ve been leaning how to translate the ancient Xear language. There?s even a small section in the library where any book or document related to the Xear has been gathered for study.? ?I don?t recall seeing anything like that,? said Elaine. ?You wouldn?t, the section for older language studies is in a separate wing from the medical texts.? Juste explained. ?There might be a few in there if it related to medical treatments, but there isn?t any that I know of.? Felix chuckled. ?So that?s why I never see you at the Citadel cousin. You?re always off somewhere in the library with your nose in a book!? Juste smiled sheepishly in response, ?Yeah. If I?m not working on translating something or working as Waltier?s aid, then I?m usually in the library.? Elaine started to comment and hastily covered her mouth instead when an unexpected yawn caught her by surprise. ?I think I?m going to turn in.? She stood up, the others doing so as well. ?Goodnight.? ?Goodnight Priestess.? Both of them replied in unison. Elaine just smiled and took her leave. It took her little time to return to her quarters. The trip would take at least six hours, longer if they ran into troublesome weather. There was no reason to stay awake for the journey. She slept for the rest of the trip, and then got up when a soft knock at her door letting her know they had arrived sounded. What few possessions she had with her were already packed and it took her little time to quickly get dressed. It wasn?t quite four am yet and she stretched sleepily before finally exiting the airship. There was always something comforting about returning to the Citadel and it warmed her heart to be back as she stepped onto solid ground again. Elaine was only sorry that it was too dark out for her to truly see the familiar buildings and towers of the massive Citadel. Other than to absentmindedly nod to people she knew as she made for her quarters, she paid little attention to the familiar halls and comforting sounds as those who were awake went about their business. Since she was not expected to report to High Priestess Yolanda until ten am, once she had put her things away, she turned in to get a bit more sleep. It wasn?t until half past eight that she finally woke up. Once she had placed her clothing that needed cleaning in the hamper, she straightened up and made for the women?s baths. Having risen a little on the late side due to her trip, the private rooms were fairly empty and she quickly got cleaned up. Elaine stopped by the kitchens once she was done to get a bite to eat, opting for some fruit, bread and cheese, washing it down with cool water. She chatted a bit with the few people she ran into, but she was too busy running what she needed to discuss with High Priestess Yolanda through her head to truly pay attention. It was half past nine when one of the many messengers that served in the Citadel caught up with her, giving her a slip of paper. She thanked the boy, and then opened up the small sealed envelope to read what was inside. Elaine stopped and stared at it for several minutes before she finally got up and left the kitchens. There was only one thought on her mind as she followed the instructions, and that was to wonder why the Sief had requested that she come to her office immediately upon receiving the message. 6.
I don't know a lot about cars but every time I go to get my oil changed I am asked if I need to get my air filter replaced. Normally I say yes and deal with the extra 30 dollar charge, but today I was watching my spending and had to decline.
I don't know a lot either, but I had to learn how to do daily inspections for a semi when I was driving. So I got pretty good at knowing if there really was something wrong or not with my regular car. So when it comes to this:
Have you ever caught a mechanic trying to rip you off?
I have, on several occasions caught someone trying to lie to me about needing repairs. Aside from the air filter, which seems to be pretty standard, the one that stands out the most was some place telling me that my rear wheel drive was broken. They wanted $900 for a new one. The only problem with that was, my car has front wheel drive. So I knew he was completely full of it. So I left and never went back. And you know, that so called broken rear wheel drive that my car doesn't have... well that was over five years ago and my car still drives just fine. I guess he figured I'd be too dumb to know that he was lying.
 7.
My point was that if the religion formally did not give blacks equal rights until 1978, it stands to reason there was still academic discrimination long after they were granted formal equality.
You know, this is tiresome, she never said the discrimination didn't exist, the only one dragging racism into this is you. Everyone already gets that there are issues with the education system.
So yes, the religion did leap forward, but there still exists a massive chasm in terms of equality of histories. Yes, we are all formally, legally equal, but academic discrimination is still alive and well. It is still in our schools, despite however 'equal' we all are.
Did her posts ever say that all schools were free of that? No.
So long this line, I find it difficult to believe the climate she lived it was progressive enough to teach African history when religion was still discriminatory, the nation was still discriminatory, and academia was still discriminatory. She asserts the trend of history was progressiveness TO historical degradation. This is the opposite of how things work - as time passes, society becomes more progressive not the other way around.
You're still making the same mistake. For all we know it was just one town or only those that had a higher number of people willing to go against the grain and teach more. Pull your head out of the stupid notion that there were no places that weren't progressive. Are you forgetting that the black history month was created for that very reason? Are you forgetting that it started with something called 'Negro week'? I think that was started back around the first part of the 20th century. I'd have to look to be sure. So it stands to reason that there were and still are pockets among the states where schools do have teachers who do a better job. Just cause say 90% doesn't... it doesn't change that there is say 10% that does. I don't know exact numbers by the way, I'm just saying that claiming 100% of schools never tried to see this or teach differently is extremely ignorant on your part.
When I say "these pushes were not enough," I'm talking more broadly than just LDS. I'm talking about equality across the board. I do not personally believe there is total equality today, and I brought up academia is an example of how there still exists discrimination and bias, and how we've got a ways to go.
Well duh, I think that's a given really. But my point was about that incident, not things as a whole. You keep bashing people over the head with a point that everyone agrees on and you keep using it to dismiss the fact that everything isn't as black and white (yes terrible pun, sorry about that) as you're portraying it.
 8.
Unless the religion taught about black history, I'm not really sure where it would factor into this equation. I mean, maybe this happened for her, but she said she learned about it in high school so I assume she meant non-religion education.
Are you saying teachers in schools don't believe in religion or belong to one? o_O That's kind of the point I was getting at. Obviously she had teachers who didn't agree with the current system.
Interestingly enough, your mention of religion serves to underscore my original point - academic and historical discrimination is a systemic problem. Even a cursory reading of the aforementioned link will show you LDS was an extraordinarily racist group for years. And yes, like you mentioned, it only stopped in 1978. So why would I believe her for telling me she learned about African history in an extraordinarily racist state, under a discriminatory religion, in a time of division, schism, and turmoil? Forgive my impolite disbelief.
So now all members of a given religion blindly follow the majority? The point I made which you didn't quote was that there were members, within the church, who did not agree with Church policy. Why is it so hard for you to believe that there were groups who not only taught it, but worked from within to end it? Forgive my impolite disbelief in your apparent inability to grasp that not all members of any religion or state think or teach the same.
I'm not denying there were historical pushes for equality. Indeed, without these heroic movements the world would be a fundamentally different place. However these pushes, while great, have been insufficient. Academia is still a heavily eurocentric realm, African history is still overlooked as irrelevant or nonexistent, and kids never learn anything about Africa aside from "we took slaves from there." I think most of us witnessed this firsthand in elementary school, and hell, even in college.
The pushes were not enough? Uh, blacks were granted the right to hold positions of authority in the Church in 1978. That is the point really. Obviously we still have a ways to go, but I find it kind of tiresome that you're dismissing the involvement of whites who actually fought for black rights.
 9.
Then it gets even better! You were in Texas of all places - I'm certain it was quite a progressive, forward-looking place in the 60s. And I would guess a state as racially welcoming would have definitely taught all this. I mean, if you had said Massachusetts or something I would've been more obliged to believe.
Would you two kindly knock it off please? Honestly, this is just getting a bit absurd. You don't believe her Retri, we get it already. The thing that annoys me the most about this, is you're making absoutely no allowances for religion or other factors that could have played into why her education, or anyone else from that time frame, was different from what you seem to think all Americans got. This was back during the huge push to end discrimination against Blacks within the Mormon Religion that Aaryanna_Mom is a member of. Everyone likes to paint all Southern states or even Religious ones as being indifferent against blacks when it's far from it. My own father has told me of the same thing, how there was a push to work on educating kids and to get rid of the restriction that wouldn't let Blacks hold positions of authority within the Church. And yes there are a lot of Mormon's in Texas and yes this push came around the time when she was in High School and quite a few members felt that Church policy was wrong. She won't say it but I will since she has told me about how her family was part of the group pushing for equality for Blacks in the church and in schools. My own parents were a part of it since they too felt it was unwarranted discrimination. That discrimination finally ended in 1978 (yes I had to look that up, I knew it was in the 70's I just didn't remember the exact date). So seriously, stop looking at the world with narrow blinders and assuming the worst about everyone.

That's what maturity is all about. The whole point of the article, as I understood it, was to encourage people to THINK about their situation instead of throwing all that to the winds to satisfy one's hormones. I don't completely buy into the distance thing, but I do think it's all to easy to overlook it when in reality, forgetting the carbon issue, it's going to affect your relationship.
 14.
But the actual hijack is the biggest problem and really shouldn't be there. So you're basically kidnapping a high ranking member of the church since my character is representing the High Priestess Yolanda. o_O Uh, that's going to cause a major incident on so many levels Gavin. I do agree that it's overdramatized with the commercialism and such, but I still like the sentiment of doing something for a person you care about. I get the argument that one shouldn't need a day to be romantic or show you care, but if that's really true, why would you object to doing it on that day too? It's just one of many days to show you care in my opinion, even if that care is only to treat yourself.
 18. Okay, I finally got a post in. I did not indicate a ceremony so you're free to go straight to the reception or someone is welcome to talk to Elaine since she will be heading to where the ceremony will be held of course. =P I thought about having a conversation with someone in my post, but then decided on getting into what she thinks and a tiny bit of what she does instead. That and the other attempt at a post was not working where that one flowed rather well. o_O
 19. No morning was spent without first devoting time to reflective meditation and giving thanks to the Phoenix Goddess. Doing so always put Elaine in the proper frame of mind for carrying out her duties as a Priestess. She actually had very little on her agenda for the day. Most of what she had come for had been taken care of in the past week. The last thing she was to deal with before returning to the Citadel was performing the wedding ceremony for Beatriste Almagest and Cole Dreadnaught. The aftermath of the terrible revolution had seen far too many funeral services and in her mind, it would be refreshing to see to a wedding for a change. With all she did lately, it seemed like she saw them so infrequently. So when she had been asked to perform the ceremony she had been only too glad to accept. Elaine was not surprised that the wedding was clearly the talk of both nations. Nor was she surprised that no expense was being spared. However, it was hard to feel critical over such extravagance when the Almagest?s had poured a considerable amount of their fortune into rebuilding their homeland after the revolution. That was how she had met many of them in the first place. The Church had been among the first to arrive with humanitarian aid, and within no time that had led to her working with the Almagest?s and other families devoted to the restoration of Czenovia. Now as the hour of the ceremony approached she was taking a moment to prepare herself in the room set aside for her on the Alaina, carefully checking her attire over. They did believe in simplicity, but at the same time, it was important to properly represent the Church. Since she worked on behalf of High Priestess Yolanda she was required to wear the more formal dress for occasions such as this. Considering the symbolic nature of the wedding, it was only fitting that she did. Instead of the simple cotton weave for her high collar sleeveless, floor length robe, she wore one of the finest pure white silk, the symbol of the Phoenix Goddess carefully woven into the fabric. If you were up close you could see it, sometimes the light would fall upon it just right, but otherwise it was virtually unnoticeable. Over that was the open floor length light blue vest that fastened at the waist with four clasps. A slightly darker blue flat wrap six inches in width was wrapped around her waist. The clasps in the back carefully done so as not to show. Like the white dress, they too were of the finest silk. Over that was a floor length silk cloak, gathered in front with a gold fastener. And finally, the traditional gold band that went from one ear, around the back of her head to the other, with gold danglers that gave off soft little chimes when she moved. Only the Cardinals, High Priest, High Priestess or a member acting on their behalf wore them. It was the only part of her attire she did not care for. Not because she didn?t understand the necessity of some form of material trappings in one?s attire, and compared to most nobles, even her attire would still be considered quite poor. However, she was not a High Priestess and if not for High Priestess Yolanda?s poor health, she wouldn?t even be there. Three years and yet she was still not used to it. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and then slowly let it out. It was not important. A tiny knock at the door brought her out of her thoughts; she turned to answer it, the soft chime of the gold danglers from the band breaking the silence. Elaine composed herself and then opened the door to the pair of Church guards currently assigned to her. It was almost time for the ceremony.

For being 50 years behind the times! Want to know why? For the entire valley area it's about 88% Mormons, for the main cities: Provo & Orem, try 98% Mormon. So yeah. We get nominated the most conservative city in the entire freaking US for our population size on a regular basis. =_= Oh joy. Which means come voting time... my vote does nothing. There are too few Dems in the area, or anything else for that matter. So what makes here fun? All the national parks and those few of us who do not belong to the Mormon collective. The original intent might not be, but the words will be since the one hearing them can't possibly know that the one saying them doesn't fully understand. Is it forgivable? Definitely. There's a huge difference between deliberate statements vs ones that were not. I'm sure it varies from case to case, but if the one who was offended is enlightened to the fact that the person didn't realize it, then I see no reason why letting it go would be a problem. Especially if the person makes a point of not doing it again.
