Sunfall's character will be performing the actual ceremony, although once the wedding begins I suspect we'll skip ahead to that evening's festivities. Whether Sunfall wants to come up with a ceremony, or merely allude to them is up to her. I have another post with Fonty I need to do, and then I'm willing to move onto the reception.
If anything I would most likely just allude to one instead of coming up with one. I may or may not mingle before the ceremony. o_O I've been loaded down with a lot of work at theO lately. I'm almost caught up though and if things go well, I should have time for a post tomorrow. If I wasn't so tired, I would have done one tonight. But I am and posts just don't work very well when I'm tired.

I've seen where the system worked well and where it didn't. So there isn't any thought that we are above it, rather one of thinking we don't need it. I know I'd probably just turn it off if we did use it. I guess that's because I'd rather look at other things we could add that are fun instead of a reputation system. But that's just me. I did vote no, but if it was tried anyway, I certainly wouldn't object either.

They seem perfectly fine to me. It's only when people start going past a quick kiss, hug or holding hands that I roll my eyes and expect them to just get a room. Otherwise, what's the harm? Sure some might be doing it to brag but like Indi said, for most, it probably doesn't even cross their minds. I know I never think that the few times I've been open about displaying it. Most of the time it's just a spontaneous kiss on the cheek or something, not a must show off that I have a boyfriend type of deal. Anyone who thinks otherwise obviously does not know me.

Edit: Negative repping can be disabled completely if it became an issue. In that case, the reputation system would closely resemble theO's hugs.
In that case I see no reason to not give it a try. So long as we have the means to fix it should things become a problem, I'm fine. I just remember how much of a headache the other was so I'd really hate to see that again. o_O I do agree with Allamorph that it's unlikely to happen here, but I still like knowing what the options are. Also... Dessy! Indi is right, what are you waiting for? Chain Shy back up immediately! :D

I don't know how to say this any other way. I acknowledge that I'm making a generalization when I say "the wronged party does not behave dispassionately" and thus is more predisposed to seek the death penalty. Of course it's not true in 100% of cases, but for the vast majority I would say it holds. You'll always be able to find a few exceptions to the rule, however in large part, victimized parties in the US seek death.
So long as you see that not all of them do, that's all I'm looking for.
I'm of the opinion that the death penalty is indeed killing for revenge. It's a very basal practice that fails to transcend our primal urges to exact an eye for an eye. The vast majority of the developed world (read: the west) has done away with it, and the fact that America still clings to it is bizarre. Our country is perhaps the most resistant to progress in the west.
And that's fine, because you're certainly entitled to that opinion. Part of why I tend to take it to task is for myself and others that I know, it's not a primal urge to exact an eye for an eye. It's only for the most horrible of crimes. The ones where you know that given the chance they can and will kill again. The very idea of extending that to include all murders is something I would oppose.
After a brief search, I happened upon this site[/url'], and I couldn't help but notice what sort of company our nation was enjoying on the graph. Forgive me for disparaging the death penalty and those who support it, but it appears the US is once again holding tight to a measure most of our peer nations have moved past. I suppose my view is that progress is a trend that moves to the left, and the death penalty is a vestige of rightist governance.
Well you see, I'm not at all against tightening up the system and making it harder to seek it. I only support it for the more severe cases. It's also worth noting that if they were to change the law so life without parole really meant that, instead of the deal where in 25-30 years they can be considered... then most of my objection to getting rid of it would vanish.
Cheers on a rigorous discussion, but I'm willing to accept our differing worldviews.
Same here. I really don't think we're too far off when you think about it. I support it because right now our system to deal with it, should it be banned, is inadequate. I'll still think it's acceptable, but if they really do make it so they'd never be free to do it again, I would be fine with that. But right now that's not the case so until it is, I will continue to support it.

Evangelion:[/B'] Dear. Sweet. God. Just how bloody depressed was the person who wrote Evangelion anyway ? Now I have mild OCD (Or CDO to put the letters in alphabetical order) so I'll finish out a normal 26 episode anime even if I don't care too much for the story or character. With Evangelion however, I managed 4 episodes before I simply could not muster the will to continue. Having actually read spoilers of the ending I'm unsurprised there is not a happy ending for Shinji and Co.
So quoted for truth. I rented this because everyone was telling me how fantastic and epic it was. If I had any idea on just how wrong they were, I would have never picked it up. How I managed to watch the entire thing I'll never know. The only highlight to finishing it was being glad I hadn't wasted my money purchasing it. It is definitely one of the worst anime that I've seen. Oh and Dead Leaves is just undeniable horrible. Even more than Evangelion. It's only saving grace was that it was a short movie instead of an entire series.

Unless a dub is really bad I always prefer things in my own language. I like to multi task so that makes watching/listening to something a whole lot easier if it's in a language I understand. There are of course some that I really prefer the sub since the dub is bad, but those, at least out of what I've seen, are few and far between.

I grew up in the 70's. Anime was heavily edited back then so my parents could care less if I watched it or not. All of the elements that might have been considered objectionable weren't in it since they were chopped out before it was aired. They didn't really start cutting back on the editing until after I was an adult so that made the point moot since they don't monitor what I watch anymore. =P

I have three. My main blog that's about whatever I feel like posting. Though I tend to toss up posts related to moderation stuff at theOtaku too. My second one is for fanwords. I only have one submitted though so I kind of need to work on filling that out. I have some other ideas that I haven't gotten around to writing. The third is some of my own fiction that I've written. I need to finish posting it. It's not ready for fanwords, I have too much work to do on it. Heh. Anyway, that's all I have. I have the option for quite a few more worlds, but so far I don't have any ideas on what I'd actually do. =P

Ten cents. Literally. The thing that really sucks about girl pants is that the manufactors think girls never use pockets or somehting, so you could usually only fit maybe[/I'] half your hand in them!
Now I'm wondering just what brand you buy since all of my pants and jeans have normal sized pockets that you can fit your entire hand in. o_O Anyway, I usually carry a type of purse so the only thing I ever have in my pants pocket is my keys. All my junk is in my purse. =P

The entire reason we have a legal system is so that it can act as an impartial third party arbiter in disputes. The philosophy behind this is the notion that people do not act dispassionately or rationally when they are the ones wronged -- if you and I are in disagreement, you might think I deserve punishment X when in reality I deserve a less harsh punishment. But because you have such immediate proximity to the event (i.e. it happened to you), you're not able to displace yourself from it and make a fair and balanced decision. The courts do that for us, so that there's no question of if the judgement handed down is from an uninvolved, dispassionate party.
Which is why we have the legal system to begin with, but seriously Retri, try searching the web, you'll find quite a few families who have lost loved ones actually oppose the Death Penalty. I'm not just saying this, it's a fact. Look it up.
You'll probably make the point that if the court system gives a verdict, then it must be fair (i.e. since the court sentences someone to death, they were dispassionate and balanced in their ruling). This argument would have great merit were it not for the fact America has a disproportionately high level of persons executed annually. This means that, aside from being in the league of China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, et al, we're simply more predisposed to condemn someone to death. Our courts and our people favor death to other punishment. It's just insane.
Retri, honestly, you're just being ridiculous here. If you compare America to countries that don't execute people for crimes of course it looks out of whack. But using the data provided in the link Aaryanna put in her post, it's anything but disproportionate. For 29 years America has, on average, executed 38 people a year where approximately 20,500 people a year have been murdered. I don't seen a huge disparity in that figure. If anything it goes in the other direction. It's rather convenient that you excluded China because they out do all other countries combined. In the year 2004 they executed approximated 3,400 people. Three times as many people as the US in 29 years. You're also conveniently overlooking how the Death Penalty in America has slowly been altered to do away with allowing minors to be given the sentence. It has quite a few things in place to protect the innocent as Allamorph already mentioned. So it's far from being a system of we kill to get revenge. Also, I never said the legal system was without flaw. :/
You can send the person to jail for life without parole. This is probably the safest of all options, because if later down the line new evidence surfaces that exonerates the prisoner, they can be free and have a second shot at life. The invention of DNA techniques is a prime example of evidence showing up later.
You forgot the bit on how many states, life without parole only means a person has to serve for 25 years before it can be considered. If they want to be more serious about that, the life without parole option needs to really mean Life. With. No. Option. For. Parole. That's a gap that needs to be closed if they're going to consider that.
If you just execute them, there's no second shot. There's no possibility of giving back that person their life if they were really innocent. You've just killed someone.
I think it was already established that appeals and other means to determine if someone really is innocent is in place. So we're just rehashing at this point.
Looking at the numbers, that's what I'm seeing. I'm seeing a nation that executes as many people as fundamentalist countries in the Middle East. Forgive me for assuming people here are a little less than sensible when they've been heavily wronged.
o_O We have an extensive justice system in place that is not only cautious about when the death penalty can be sought, but is also set up to allow extensive appeals for those who are convicted. Based on this... I think you're assumptions are way off base. The numbers of those who actually are executed a year simply do not indicate a society that isn't sensible.

I'd definitely say both Ocarina of Time and The Windwaker are games that I can easily beat. They are fun, but the difficulty level is just too simple once you figure it out. The same can be said for Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. I've beaten the normal level of difficulty and the Nightmare level. Once you've tackled the last boss on Nightmare, and you've played on Hell... the normal default level becomes a cake walk.

It's truly looking more and more impressive. As I've said before, I'm not the biggest fan when it comes to SO3. Fayt practically killed my experience (and perhaps, too much of a complex battle system for me.), and with this new leading character (Edge Maverick), I can't help, but feel a little iffy. He kind of gives off that same type of personality that Fayt does... I won't judge him on it yet though lol. Apparently, its set release date is Feb 24 2009 instead of Mar 3.
And Fayt was my favorite character from the previous game. XD I can't tell if that video gives that type of feel or not. And though I wouldn't mind, I'd prefer someone different just cause that's usually more fun. As for the release date. Even if it's only a little sooner, I certainly won't mind that either. I'm looking forward to playing this game. :catgirl:

Okay, the rest of the fight is up. o_O There is more... however, the nature of the information can be either handled in Sabrina's next post or in a flash back. So if anyone wants to post, moving the time ahead won't hurt things. So for all intents and purposes, consider it finished. =P

The Howling Lucia was fighting with her scythe now that Phaidra?s spell had caught the vampire off guard several times. Though she never got her as good as the first time, with the purifying flames, the woman was now sporting burns across her stomach, chest, right arm and along the upper part of her back. Lucia had plenty of cuts along her arms and a couple on her chest and back as well, but her clothing had at least offered some protection. It wouldn?t matter once the fight was over since, like before, her body would heal. She could feel the blood and sweat that was soaking her clothing. They couldn?t have been fighting for very long and yet she was already starting to feel tired. Lucia had an idea on how to end it, she just needed the opening. At the moment, she was the only one pressing the woman since Ruby was hanging back to help Sarvel protect Phaidra from the vampire?s attempts to stop her spell casting. It was still taking far too long, but the tactic seemed to be working. In no time the woman was also sporting cuts from where Lucia?s scythe had managed to connect. Another one of the barrier circles that Phaidra had been casting sprung up in front of the vampire. She jerked to the side and managed to avoid it, resulting in Lucia?s scythe slamming into the circle instead. It took her a split second to register that the woman had spun, her right hand out as if reaching for her. Lucia caught the blur of the blade coming her way before it struck. It lodged into her left shoulder, and with a startled cry of pain she stumbled back a few paces. At the same moment she saw that the vampire had had rushed her, Lucia also realized that the others were too far away. The vampire?s right hand caught the handle of her scythe just above her hand as the woman reached for Lucia with her left one, lightening already forming in her palm. I?m not going to be able to avoid that. She thought even as her mind ran through the things she could do. There was only one thing that would work and she shifted her grip to grab the woman?s hand, sliding her right hand up to where her left hand had been. She would only get one chance. The vampire?s hand slammed into her chest, sending lightening into her body. Lucia ignored the pain as much as she could as she pulled her scythe apart. She brought it down until the tip of the lower blade touched the floor. Then deftly she switched her grip and brought it up in an arch aimed at the woman?s unprotected right side. The woman was already letting go in an attempt to avoid the slash. With a sickening crunch the blade slammed into her side, electing a scream from the vampire as it hit. She tried to pull away as Lucia let go and grabbed the other end with her right hand. The vampire was pulling on the scythe embedded in her side when Lucia swung with all her remaining strength to take her head off. As if in slow motion the body parts fell to the floor as Lucia released her scythe, letting it go back to its resting place. She could hear the others shouting as a wave of nausea drove her to her knees. As soon as it faded, without giving it a thought, she reached up and jerked the blade out, heedless of the damage. The sudden flare of pain caused her vision to gray and the room seemed to spin. Lucia wondered if Adrian had felt the same after the fight with the Count. She was starting to fall over when she felt hands supporting her, keeping her upright even as they helped her to sit down. For a short moment what they were saying made no sense at all and then she heard herself speaking. ?She?s dead right?? She looked up and Phaidra who was crouched in front of her. Ruby had changed back and was sitting on her right shoulder looking at her anxiously. She could see Sarvel over by the fallen vampire, checking the woman out. ?Good.? She said when Phaidra nodded. Lucia ignored her as she fussed over where the blade had gotten her. She was bleeding freely, but she could tell that it would be fine, given time. ?Will you be alright while I take care of the barrier?? Lucia just nodded slightly. She started to reach for her communicator as Phaidra got up and walked away. A sharp pain from the movement changed her mind and she let it alone. She could check the data later. She said nothing as Ruby landed on the floor in front of her and then just quietly climbed into her lap. As soon as Phaidra and Sarvel took care of the barrier, they?d leave and once they did that? she would send that message to Nathan.

Unfortunately that's the way most people feel. Most people seeking the death penalty do so for some sort of satisfaction or "closure." People who have been wronged are not and cannot be dispassionate or entirely rational. They've suffered a massive loss, and they want to make the offender "pay for it."
Your reasoning is flawed. You've made the faulty assumption that once wronged, people somehow lose any from of rationality when that's far from the truth. It's not about making anyone pay, it's about making sure no one else has to suffer the same thing.
The victimized party contradicts themselves, and no one else. They are irrational, angry, bitter, and hurt. They think execution will bring closure, but it never does.
It is true that some people falsely believe this, and it is also why the law is there to make sure things are not done out of emotions caused by the event. But again, your giving all victims of this crime the same sweeping generalized reputation of being mindless fools after revenge. I know what it's like to lose a loved one because of someone else's bad decision so I really find it hard to believe that everyone is as bloodthirsty or irrational as you are implying here. The only true closure is in knowing that the offender can't do it to someone else. It's not about making them pay, it's about protecting the rest of society from further crimes. And before we get into the life without parole side of this...that also brings up that I only support the Death Penalty for the most horrible of crimes or in the case of serial killers.

I would want to know how it works before I could be in favor of a rep system. Mainly because part of the reason theOtaku's system uses hugs now instead of votes is because people did run around and deliberately vote down people's submissions. I remember the complaints over that. I'm sure a forum is quite different, but I'm more in favor of the concept of simply allowing a thumbs up that a post is good quality and nothing else. Otherwise I say no to voting period. The idea of what's considered quality to begin with, varies so widely that the option to vote something down seems pointless. If something truly is bad, that's what our report bad post function is for. Being able to vote someone down just because... their grammar isn't the best or their point didn't go into as much detail as someone else's... I don't agree with that, at all. But positive reinforcement for those who do go the extra mile, that I can agree with.

[OFFICIAL] The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty of 2008 - Nominations
SunfallE replied to Shy's topic in General Discussion
Most of what I was going to list, you guys already did. So I'll post the two on my list that haven't been mentioned yet. What is it? Poetry Contest Why is it nifty? It brought some much needed love to the Anthology that often gets neglected. Plus, it was a lot of fun. Who is it? Sabrina Why is she nifty? Because she?s a perfect example on how being new doesn?t mean you can?t be an excellent contributor to the site. From running a poetry contest, cheerful comments around OtakuBoards, and working tirelessly on OB's sister site theOtaku by adding over 900 categories as the Category Guru? Without a doubt, she?s definitely quite nifty. -

Minus security, why are we spending millions of dollars just so that Barack Obama can swear to uphold the constitution? It's a waste of money. We don't need these parades! Those balls are needed. Those musicians aren't needed.
Yes I know donations won't cover all of that expense, however, last time I checked, people are allowed to waste their money however they see fit. =P Inauguration Donors
This is what is wrong with American. We are in a recession for God's sake, and we are spending $100,000,000+ just so Obama can promise to uphold the constitution. That is all that the Inauguration is about, folks. A man, who will become president, promises to defend the Constitution.
Define how it's wrong for America or rather an indication. It's not like our government is going to be tossing out huge parties like this during his entire term. I really don't see people being excited over our first Black President and therefore wanting to be a part of it as wrong or an indication of what's wrong with our country. In the end, I really see no harm in it. Yes it's expensive, but until it starts become a regular occurrence, I'm not going to get bent out of shape just cause millions of American wanted to be a part of it. =P And since I'm in here, I did watch it and like Shy I enjoyed it greatly. Seeing something that wouldn't have been possible when I was a kid become possible... is just downright nifty.

Well my postbit is pretty uneven anyway so another line doesn't really matter. Well other than you James, with so many posts you automatically get the I Live Here title! XD

Welcome to OtakuBoards skllngtn. I'm going to close this since three word story games just do not have enough to them to really go anywhere and often degenerate fairly quickly. This isn't meant to be mean but to help you start a game that will be more enjoyable for everyone involved. If you wish to create a game, it needs to have a bit more to it than that, perhaps you could require people to add ten words instead of just three? With a maximum of fifteen to keep it short. If your not certain on what to create, here are some past successful examples: Caption Contest ^.^ & lolmembers [Game] Still simple and yet fun for everyone. If you have any questions by all means drop me or any staff member a pm and we'll help you out. :catgirl: ~SunfallE Thread Closed

Your name: Elaine Adelle Waltier Your age: 27 Your connection to the Almagest or Achard family: Elaine is not connected to either family. Your portrait: Elaine Your occupation/location: Elaine is a priestess of the Church of the Phoenix. She is assigned to the headquarters of the Church located on the Island Citadel. She often travels as a representative of the church in order to help oversee and assist with humanitarian aid in addition to charity work with various orphanages. This led to her becoming friends with members from both families, especially the Almagests who assisted with rebuilding after the revolution in Czenovia. Your story: Elaine was born and raised within the Island Citadel since her parents were members of the church and part of the staff that maintained the enormous fortress. Like all children who resided at the Citadel she was given an education by the Church. She was twelve years old when her parents and many others were stricken with a deliberating disease that they had no cure for. Upon their passing she was taken in by the Church, and she elected to continue her studies and began training to become a priestess. In an effort to better understand why her parents and many others died, she also started learning about basic medical care. Her dedication to learning and assisting those in need led to her being taken under the wing of the current High Priestess of Charity, Yolanda, who was responsible for overseeing charity work. Shortly after turning twenty two, Elaine was promoted to Priestess and instead of taking up a position in a Church, she stayed at the Citadel and continued to further her education and help with charity work. When the Church sent aid to Czenovia following the bloody revolution, Elaine was sent in place of High Priestess Yolanda since traveling is hard on her health due to her age. Since then she has continued to travel on behalf of High Priestess Yolanda to carry out Church business.

how do u put stuff on here? cuz ive seen sum stuffs that are sadly worst than mine... i submited 2 things but thr still not being accepted... it angers me!!!
Whether or not someone's work is better isn't the issue. There are a number or reasons why something would have been denied. For example, scanning and then leaving a huge amount of white space instead of trimming the extra off. Or resizing it and making the image distorted in the process. I'd check the submission guidelines that Korey linked to. Also theOtaku has specific guidelines so certain things aren't allowed. The Site Terms explains what kind of stuff isn't acceptable.
