1. All this time reading what people put here and yet never answering it myself. Guess I should change that. ^_~
Ok, basically, this thread stems from my being at OB for a little over a year now, and still not really knowing anyone. So, I am asking: Who Are You? This encompasses many different things, such as: -Are you male or female? -Where do ya hail from, stranger? -How old are you? -Do you have siblings? And any other information you'd be willing to submit. Hopefully this will allow everyone at OB to get to know each other just a little better.
Definitely female, my full name is Elizabeth though I actually go by Beth. I was born in Provo Utah, though I?ve also lived in Dallas Texas and Ventura California. And that doesn?t include the time I was a truck driver and basically lived all over the west coast for a while. My age? :p Well I?ll give you a hint, you have to be 21 to get a cdl license to drive a semi truck so somewhere between 21 and 40. ^_~ I actually have 4 brothers and one sister. The eldest brother was hurt in a accident caused by a drunk driver and never recovered from it. (he was in a coma for 3 ½ months before dying) The second eldest brother lives in Oregon and I?m officially an aunt since I have a little niece and nephew. The third older brother is unfortunately a drug addict and since I don?t talk with him anymore I have no idea what he is up to. Then there?s me. ^_^ Next is my younger sister who I see on a regular basis and finally there?s my younger brother who is working on his degree in computers. Obviously I like anime or I wouldn?t be here. I?m also into reading science fiction and fantasy novels. And I love to go hiking. One of my favorite things to do is visit Yellowstone National Park. I never get tired of going there. Right now I?m learning how to do digital art and I?m looking into going back to college to get another degree. I figure if I?m not out on the road driving I might as well be learning new stuff. As for my personality, haha, most people think I?m shy when I just tend to be reserved until I know a little more about someone. Then they tend to be surprised since I?m very outgoing once I get past the get to know you part.

 4. One of my most painful moments was this last winter. I slipped on some ice and ended up cracking my ribs. It wasn?t ultra painful, but it hurt everyday for months before it finally healed. The worst was last year on a trip to Yellowstone National Park with my family. We went on a hike to some falls and when we got there I somehow stepped wrong and hurt my right foot. I could barely stand to walk on it. I had to find a stick to use like a crutch and hobble 2.5 miles back to the car. Fortunately it was a flat hike so I didn?t have to climb or go downhill. Otherwise I probably would have needed more help to get back to the car! Turns out that I somehow tore part of the tendon along the bottom of my foot. I had to stay off of it for months while it healed.
 5. The main problem I have with this scenario is that if someone I cared for really did try to kill me like that then my thought would be that they didn?t really love me in the first place. The other problem I have is that I?ve never believed the idea that I could never feel love for someone else once I did fall in love. I would still want to resolve the argument so I would still go and meet them though. And if I really did encounter someone trying to kill me, though I imagine they would have a huge butcher knife instead of a sword, then I would probably find some way to disable them and turn them over to professional help. I would imagine that if someone was trying to kill me over an argument then they must be unbalanced, or so it would seem. If I really loved them then I would want them to get the medical care that they needed instead of killing them or allowing myself to be killed.

 7. I do not agree with banning a specific breed of dog. By focusing on banning a certain breed I think that we are ignoring a much bigger problem. Most of my information comes from this site if you wish to know more: Dog Bite Law For starters there are around 5 million bite victims annually in the United States alone. Out of all those bites between 15-20 people die each year. The problem with banning a specific breed is it is giving the illusion that the problem is being solved when in reality it doesn?t really do much to solve the real problem. Which in my mind is reducing the epidemic of people being bitten in the first place. ?After the United Kingdom banned pit bulls in the 1990s, a study showed that the number of dog bites remained the same even though the number of pit bulls had steeply declined. (Study cited in B. Heady and P. Krause, "Health Benefits and Potential Public Savings Due to Pets: Australian and German Survey Results," Australian Social Monitor, Vol.2, No.2, May 1999.? As it says on the site where I got my information, ?it would be unwise to enact all kinds of controls on one breed alone, not necessarily because it would be unfair, but because it would be ineffective.? Banning a specific breed would set a dangerous mind-set, which would tell the general population that by doing so all the dog problems would then go away. There is another reason why banning a few breeds is ineffective: Although pit bull mixes and Rottweilers are most likely to kill and seriously maim, fatal attacks since 1975 have been attributed to dogs from at least 30 breeds.
The most horrifying example of the lack of breed predictability is the October 2000 death of a 6-week-old baby, which was killed by her family's Pomeranian dog. The average weight of a Pomeranian is about 4 pounds, and they are not thought of as a dangerous breed. Note, however, that they were bred to be watchdogs! The baby's uncle left the infant and the dog on a bed while the uncle prepared her bottle in the kitchen. Upon his return, the dog was mauling the baby, who died shortly afterwards. ("Baby Girl Killed by Family Dog," Los Angeles Times, Monday, October 9, 2000, Home Edition, Metro Section, Page B-5.)
In all fairness, therefore, it must be noted that: · Any dog, treated harshly or trained to attack, may bite a person. Any dog can be turned into a dangerous dog. The owner most often is responsible -- not the breed, and not the dog. · An irresponsible owner or dog handler might create a situation that places another person in danger by a dog, without the dog itself being dangerous, as in the case of the Pomeranian that killed the infant (see above). · Any individual dog may be a good, loving pet, even though its breed is considered to be likely to bite. A responsible owner can win the love and respect of a dog, no matter its breed. One cannot look at an individual dog, recognize its breed, and then state whether or not it is going to attack. Personally I think that legislation to ban a specific breed is a waste of time and money. It does nothing to solve the real problem. It?s like assuming that since one dog killed then all other dogs will kill. People tend to overlook the fact that there are thousands of pit bull and rottweilers who never bite anyone. To get rid of the rest just because one is a problem is stupid and wasteful. Instead we should be focusing on raising public awareness on how to care for pets and the importance of selecting a breed to fit your lifestyle. If you don't have the time for a breed that needs more discipline or training, then the person at fault is the owner and not the dog. By banning specific breeds we would be punishing the dog instead of the person who was not taking their responsibility as a dog owner seriously.
 8.
Conversely, when I first became a mod, I was quite strict--whereas now, I lean far more toward the side of leniency. It took me a while to find a good balance, and it was particularly difficult to strike the right tone when I was first starting out, especially since I was as nervous as heck about being a mod in the first place. I get what you're saying, but I would really hesitate to consider this "a general trend." Rather, I see it as being part of the usual fluctuations.
Nervous as heck really sums it up well. I?ve been trying really hard to strike a good balance without overdoing it. I certainly wasn?t trying to suck the life out of the thread. ^_~
Actually, that's the part that caught my attention the most. Because of how it was worded, I simply mistook her intent to be to take the thread in a different direction, rather than to open it up to more varied discussion because of the posts it had spawned so far. That was definitely my error, though I still think a simple reminder of quality would've sufficed.
Well I certainly didn?t explain it as clearly as I thought I had. So I added another post that I hope explains my intent a little better.
 9. I think my post was taken a little to seriously. I was trying to encourage more than just responding to someone?s post by saying it was funny. ^_~ So I?ll be a little more clear this time. If you want to do what tanukioh suggested by all means post your story. If you like platypus?s then by all means post some facts. And if you have a funny picture, feel free to post those as well! ^_~ So here?s my story as to how duckbill platypus?s originated. They are the servants of the all knowing and all wise Platypus god! :p
 10. My story is that so far this thread is spam. I suggest that people start putting a little more effort into their replies. Also tanukioh, when starting a thread try to put a little more effort into it. If you really want to discuss stories on how the Duckbill Platypus came to be you could have put in your own story of how you think it happened. Or even some information on it?s origins for example: When first seen in 1797 by early white settlers near the Hawkesbury River, outside Sydney, it triggered a search and controversy that lasted almost a century. Nicknamed the 'watermole', it was said to be a combination reptile, bird, fish and furred animal. The perplexed local governor sent specimens back to mother England for study. But the English found it equally unbelievable. One zoologist suggested it was 'freak imposture' sold to gullible seamen by Chinese taxidermists. Another, suspecting fraud, tried to pry the 'duck's bill' off the pelt; the marks of his scissors can still be seen today on the original, now preserved in the British Museum of Natural History in London. So I?m changing the basis of this thread to a general discussion on Duckbill Platypus and not just stories on how they came to be.
 11.
When she talks about drugs now, her eyes light up, it's all she cares about at all. We aren't hanging out now because she was using me to smoke weed at my house or crap like that because my housing rules aren't strict like her parents. If I didn't benefit her in some way, she wouldn't call me. I work with her little sister, whom is also one of my good friends. She is beginning to get very worried because my friend is doing coke constantly, and said if she could she would be doing ecstacy 2 to 3 times a month. She steals money from her workplace, and didn't accept a new job because she couldn't steal from there. (No extra drug money). I am extremely worried about my friend, and fear that one day I'll get a call telling me that she died of an overdose. I don't know what to do anymore, she won't listen to me since we aren't on speaking terms at the moment. Her sister tried to talk to her about some of it, and she freaked out. A friend and I thought about going to her parents, but this will just cause her to runaway again. I would try to talk to her, but she won't listen to me or anyone for that matter because all she can hear is a lecture. I also think her parents have some idea but not really. They have sent her to detox and therapists before but I don't think they know about the harder drugs. When I think of her in 5 years, all I can imagine is her being completely strung out with no money, no job, pulling tricks to get some more dope. (Honestly, that's how bad it is.)
Based on what you have said it sounds like she is not interested in changing. I know you are worried but if she is refusing to even listen to you there isn?t much that you can do. On some level she has to want to change. What I would suggest is telling her parents. Tell them everything that you are aware of. It?s possible that they do know she is into doing harder drugs. Then inform anyone else who might be in a position to help. You say you are worried about her running away, but at the same time you are worried about her overdosing. The way I see it is that you can?t stop her from running away, but saying nothing doesn?t help either as she could continue and eventually die from overdosing. At least that way you will know you tried.

 13. Well to put a wallpaper on your myOtaku page you have to first host the image at a place like imageshack or photobucket, then using the code they provide you go under edit styles in your myOtaku page backroom and put the code in the section that says Add A Background Image. As for making your background transparent, in the same area for editing styles I know that #xxxxxx works for what you're trying to do. It seems to only work if you use that value for Site Border Color, Inner Background Color, and Menu Color though. I?ve also just used # for those fields and that seems to work too.
 14. I favor an open border policy but only up to a certain point. I don?t have a problem with people entering the country but if you make it where people can come and go, as they please then if there are too many people entering at the same time the economy won?t support it. Mind you I?m talking about an extreme case of people entering the country, but if every poor person from another country were to come over, somewhere down the line we would be unable to feed all of them. The fact that we have lots of stores full of food is an illusion. My previous job was as a Truck Driver and having delivered food to stores like Wall-mart and Albertson?s I know how quickly the supply of food would run out. Right now most stores receive anywhere from 5-20 trucks a day just to keep up with the current demands. So if you were to double the demands by blindly allowing anyone to enter we would have food shortages in less than 2 days. So yes we should have immigration but it it?s not controlled or organized then it would end up being a disaster. As for the language issue, I don?t think they have to speak it to enter, but nor should they expect us to change our language to what they speak. That was an issue here in Utah a few years ago where the immigrants were demanding we change our state?s main language to Spanish. The whole thing was pretty stupid. I could see asking for it to be considered one of the main languages, but to expect us to change everything to match the language of those entering the state, well in my opinion, that was arrogant and rude to the people already living here.
 15.
Tell me a scripture that says cheating is bad. I am not talking about cheating like stealing or anything like that. I am talking like in video games and such things. Everybody says "Oh, thats cheap! You can't use that!" Sorry, I forgot the real meaning of cheating. But cheating in a video game way isn't bad to me, it is being effective. Sorry about my mistake.
Then I misunderstood you as I thought you meant any cheating was okay. I certainly don't consider using cheat codes in a video game a problem. After all it's just a game. ^_~ For the most part I don't use cheat codes since I like to beat it myself, but some games are really difficult to near impossible to beat without them. If people think cheating in games is wrong, well all I can say is they are forgetting that it's just a game.
 16. As much as I would like to say it?s immoral I would probably take from the fifty. I?ve lived in poverty before and I know what it?s like to have nothing to eat. It?s easy to sit back and claim you would never steal, but could you sit back and watch your children starve to death because a few refused to do anything? There?s also the problem that if these are the only people left on earth then by not stealing to save the fifty humans would end up dying out. Five people just aren?t enough to keep humanity going. Fifty really isn?t enough either, but it?s a much better chance for survival with that many. I?d like to say I would never steal, but at the same time I don?t think I could stand by and watch others starve because a few were too greedy to care.
 17.
Would you rather have a XBOX360 or PS3?
That's easy, PS3, so far Xbox hasn't put out a single game that actually interests me. ^_~ Okay, Would you rather live in a huge city where it's never quiet or live in a small town where it's peaceful?
 18.
SunFallE - No. How is cheating not Biblical? Is it just the way you were raised up that cheating is wrong?
You?re going to have to provide actual scripture that says cheating is okay to claim it?s Biblical. Just saying it is doesn?t cut it. Besides doesn?t the Bible tell you to not steal, commit adultery or to covet your neighbor?s possessions? It may be worded differently, but the very essence of cheating is wanting something that you couldn?t get otherwise. And that usually means you end up cheating to get it. Think about it, the real issue is are you okay with someone cheating on you? Sure you may think it?s okay so long as you don?t get caught, but how would you feel if you found out that your boyfriend was sleeping around? What if you were in a competition to win a scholarship and your friend got it instead of you because they cheated? It just seems to me that if Jesus really is everything people say he is then I find it hard to believe someone like that would tell you that cheating is okay.
 19. The only type of cheating I agree with is using cheat codes on games. Without cheat codes I don?t think I would have been able to beat games like Quake, Unreal Tournament or Doom. I just don?t have the patience to beat games like that without cheating. ^_~ I don?t agree with cheating on your partner whether you are married or not, it?s just wrong to deceive someone like that. I?ve never had someone cheat on me in a relationship, but I?ve had guys and girls who have wanted to date me in spite of the fact that they were already in a serious relationship. For me that?s the quickest way to make sure I never want anything to do with you. After all if they are willing to cheat on their current partner, what?s to stop them from then cheating on me? I think cheating on tests is wrong too. Sure it may get you the grade, but the reality is you still don?t know the information you were tested on. It may seem like a good idea but later when you need to know what you were tested on it?s going to come back and bite you so to speak. So in reality the one you hurt the most is yourself.
recca hanabishi - Why is cheating bad? Cheating is effective, not bad. The only reason people say cheating is bad is because they can't keep up with the people that are cheating, yes?
Considering what you have in your signature, isn?t your stance a contradiction?
 20.
Nobody can really ever know for sure if there is a God or not. It's just something we all have to find within ourselves[/color']
That?s exactly why I don?t consider myself a true atheist. ^_~ My main belief is centered on the belief that we truly do not know. After all just as those who believe could be wrong, so could I. Maybe sometime in the future we will find the answer. But until then I?m going to stick with not believing.
 21. Retribution: First of all I like the how the person in the picture looks. By not having the look of a real person it just gives it more life. What I don?t care for is the red color in the picture, as it seems to be too much. Perhaps a bit of texture in the background would have helped? And though I like the words you chose, I don?t care for the font, it just doesn?t seem to flow with the picture. White: For your piece what I like best is the picture; the smile fits as it makes it seem more sinister. It?s got a nice clean crisp look to it. What I don?t like is the choice of font and background color. The biggest problem with the background color is it?s so bright that it gets your attention instead of the subtler V in the main picture. Overall, both pieces are nicely done so It?s hard to pick. But I?m going to go with Retribution since I like the effects of the picture a little better.
 22.
I guess I'll say this - I don't understand atheists. I don't know if I haven't tried hard enough to understand them, or I just don't, but I know that I get in a state of disbelief when I think of people that don't believe in a God. I respect their beliefs - go believe what you want - I just don't understand their choice. I... If anyone who is an atheist wants to answer my question: why don't you believe in a God? I'm just curious. I think it would help me to better understand the choice you make. I don't *have*[/b'] to understand it by any means, but... I want to, if that's okay with you.
Well I?m not a true atheist but I?ll explain why I don?t really believe in God. Take all the questions that we do not have answers for, every one that I know who believes in God credits Him for creating everything. After all something that beautiful and complex (like our world) couldn?t possibly have just happened by itself right? But to me that argument is flawed. The very same thing can be said of all the technology we use today. Someone from a pre-technological age would see it as being magic and would consider you or me to be a God since it would be beyond their ability to comprehend technology. Even if they could be taught to use it, it would still take a lot of time and effort to educate them as to why it works. I think the same is true of our world. The idea that someone must have created something so complex is in my opinion no different. It?s simply a matter of we have yet to reach the level of education or technology to understand these things. Personally, and this is just my opinion so no offense is meant, I think a lot of people are uncomfortable with the idea that something so complex happened without a God or some higher power directing it. I say this since many of the religious people I know seem to feel the need to be able to say that God is responsible for everything. A few have even told me that for them the idea that there is no God behind things is terrifying and that even if proven otherwise they would still believe. I simply do not understand this since I have no problem with the idea that not only do I lack the ability to understand the universe, but I do not need to believe that there is someone who not only understands it but also is the one responsible for it. I am sure this is not true for everyone who believes in God, but for most of the people I know who believe; that is how they have told me they feel. They feel threatened by the idea that God does not exist. You are not the first person to state that ?God is THE only answer to all questions.? And I honestly do not understand why there has to be someone who knows everything. Just because we lack the ability to understand do we have to have someone who does? I have a hard time understanding why something has to have been created by a God. After all like I mentioned technology has improved, we can do all sorts of things that would appear God like to pre-technological civilizations. I suspect that eventually one day we too will know how to create things. I think to claim God exists just because we can?t do that yet is not proof that he does exist. Only proof that we still have a lot to learn. You say you are in a state of disbelief that people don?t believe; I feel the same way in that I don?t understand why you do. ^_~
 23. I see nothing wrong with pre-marital sex. I grew up in a religion that basically made it clear that any form of pre-marital sex was not only wrong, but also the only way to keep you from getting STD?s. Now I?m older and know better. I pretty much agree with everything indifference already stated. There is no sex education here in Utah and the major religion acts like pre-marital sex is the cause of all sexual problems. If you?ve had sex with someone and you are not married, they will literally turn their backs on you and act like you do not exist, as if you are not worthy to be their friend. I?ve seen it done to people and it just makes me sad since many who are looking down on them are no better themselves. If someone wants to wait until marriage to have sex then by all means wait. I think it should be something that is by choice instead of supposedly being the way to rid the world of STD?s. I think the real problem of STD?s comes from thinking that teaching children to not have pre-marital sex and that if they practice abstinence it will protect them from ever getting a STD. Educating children so that they can make in informed choice is in my mind the best solution. And after being educated you still choose to wait, then wait. I know I intend to wait, not necessarily for marriage but for someone who is special to me.

Before this continues I'd like to remind people of the original purpose of this thread:
Okay, who here actually believes in god or jesus?
So far everyone's been very good at stating their opinion on this without derailing the thread with pointless bickering. But a few are taking this way to personal. If you can?t state your opinion without flaming someone else then please don?t post. Consider this a warning, as further flaming and bickering will result in the thread being locked. Back on topic: I do not believe in God, or rather I should say I have yet to see anything that would convince me that God actually exists. Most of my reasons are identical to what indifference has already said. I grew up in the Mormon religion and no matter how hard I tried I felt uncomfortable with it. Later I learned that a lot of what I had been taught were lies so I have since left and now do not belong to any religion. I'm not really an atheist, as I am not convinced that God doesn't exist, I just don't see or feel anything that convinces me that he does. I suspect that the only way I will find out for sure is the day I die. There will either be a God and afterlife or their won't and nothing I do or say will change that fact. It might decide whether I go to Heaven or Hell, if they exist, but it won't determine if they are really there or not.
