Yeah. I know what you're talking about. There's a genre that's a slight deviation from Folk Metal. Grunge Metal. There's also Grunge Punk which is besiclly rednecks trying to rap. Grunge metal is rednecks trying to do some deathmetal.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! GRUNGE DID NOT, I REPEAT, DID NOT COME FROM FOLK METAL! AT ALL! NO CORRELATION! Folk metal is what happens when a band melds death or black metal with the folklore/history and traditional instruments of their native country. Grunge is not in any way similar to this. As for subgenres, here's a comprehensive list with a band from each one as an example (and I'm pretty sure this covers all the genres): Avant-Garde Meta (Arcturus) Black Death Metal (Behemoth) Black Metal (Naglfar) Brutal Death Metal (Mortician) Celtic Metal (Geasa) Dark Ambient Metal (In the Woods...) Death Doom Metal (Poema Arcanis) Death Metal (Bloodbath) Deathgrind (Circle of Dead Children) Deathrash (Deathchain) Doom Metal (My Dying Bride) Epic Metal (Midieval Steel) Folk Metal (Finntroll) Glam/Hair Metal (Poison) Goregrind (Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition) Gothic Metal (After Forever) Grindcore (Pig Destroyer) Industrial Metal (Godflesh) Melodic Death Metal (Opeth) Metalcore (Unearth) New Wave of British Heavy Metal [a.k.a. NWOBHM] (Iron Maiden) Oriental Metal (Melechesh) Power Metal (Hammerfall) Progressive Metal (Tool) Scandinavian Style Death Metal (Kalmah) Speed/Thrash Metal (Slayer) Stoner Metal (Kyuss) Symphonic Metal (Nightwish) Technical Death Metal (Cynic) Tolkien Metal (Blind Guardian) Unblack Metal (Parameaecium) Vedic Metal (Maha Yadnya) Viking Metal (Amon Amarth) Winter Metal (Immortal Souls) So if you want to get really nitpicky, you now know most of the subgenres (minus a few - I left out cross-genres [Blackened Power Metal, Progressive Power Metal, etc.]). Have fun with your newfound knowlege! 0ber0n, my freind - the reason people like myself get so nitpicky about subgenres is that it helps us identify a band. For example, if I'd never heard of Children of Bodom, and you just called them metal, I'd have no idea whether it's something I might like. If you told me they were a blackened power-metal band, I'd have more of an idea. Plus, when you tell someone who knows nothing about metal that Korn or Rage Against the Machine is metal, they get a completely wrong impression of what metal is! Korn and Rage are just fine, but they're not metal at all. You see my point? P.S. to Ryoko T.D.C.: HIM is from Finland, not England. Some consider them metal, but I don't know enough about them (or CKY for that matter) to tell you. If HIM was in fact a metal band, they'd be considered Gothic Metal, but I'm pretty sure they're just considered Goth-rock.

Oh, so x kakashi x, you're into metalcore/hardcore. And as far as bands from other countries, I don't mean EVERY band from other countries. For instance, you mentioned Rammstein, who I really don't like at all. I just think that all the really good metal stuff from Scandinavia is awesome (In Flames, Kalmah, Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Nightrage, *old* Arch Enemy, At the Gates, stuff like that). I have to mention this, by the way: I love Bodom's song called "Kissing the Shadows". If you've never heard it, find it online and download it or something. There's a riff in there that is so awesome, my head a-splode. By the way, are you guys basing your opinions solely on the newest album (Hate Crew Deathroll)? Because I think that Follow the Reaper is a much better C.D.
-
\m/ Come Sail Away is a great song! Styx is awesome.
-
lol, Thanks. In that case, what do you like? Bodom boring? They're one of the fasted bands out there, and every song is full of guitar solos and stuff. I find it very exciting!

I know there aren't a lot of metalheads here on OtakuBoards, but I want to dedicate this thread to the few and the proud. No matter what kind of metal you're into, you can discuss it here. And if you post on this thread to try to make some uneducated remark about how metal is "just a bunch of banging and screaming", you will be harshly criticized, mainly because you're wrong. Anyway, anything metal goes here. Bands, subgenres, shows, everything. To start with a topic of discussion: I think Scandinavian metal is the best. I don't know what happened to American metal, but it's dying fast. If anyone has some good suggestions as far as American metal bands, please let me know. Here's a few names I've come up with that are keeping the flame of metal alive in the U.S.: Lamb of God God Forbid Tool Nevermore Trivium I know there's more, but I'm pressed for time. Anyway, I hope the few of you who would appreciate this thread find it and help keep it going. Thanks to all you headbangers out there! \m/ (>.

Yeah, American music is at a low point these days. There are some gems, however (Tool, Lamb of God, God Forbid - just to name a few). All the good music these days comes from Scandinavia in my opinion - Sweden and Finland to be specific.

One of Finland's finest bands, Children of Bodom, is releasing a new album within the next year. This thread is for discussion on the band's previous work, why they're so awesome, and the new album. Has anyone heard anything about the new album yet? I know they announced the title, but I can't remember what it is :animeswea.

Yeah, I have Pain's Nothing Remains the Same. It's a really solid album, I enjoy it a lot. My favorite song is "Shut Your Mouth". Good stuff indeed.

In Flames - My Sweet Shadow - First of all, it's just such a beautiful song. Second of all, I relate to the lyrics really well, and I always listen to it when I need a lift. Coal Chamber - Friend - There is a very specific reason why I picked this on (which I will not go into). It marks the beginning and, more importantly, the end of a very difficult time for me. In Flames - Minus - Again, this song is beautiful. It's reminiscent of a dark time in my life - and this isn't a bad thing. Listening to it reminds me that I've come a very long way. Tool - Parabol/Parabola - Reminds me of being held by a loved one for another specific reason that I will not get into. This is always a good and comforting thing. Seether - Broken (the ORIGINAL version) - Memories of a loved one abound with this one. Flaw - What I Have to Do - This song always assures me I'm not alone in the struggle through high school (I know it sounds cheesy, but hey - we all need this kind of thing).
-
Green Day - American Idiot 50 Cent - Candy Shop The Used - All That I've Got And just a note about whoever said that Serj from System of a Down can't sing. While it is just my opinion that he's a great vocalist, he is actually a clasically trained opera singer. This doesn't come through in most of SOAD's music, granted, but it takes a lot of talent to sing many of the things he does. Not only that, but in B.Y.O.B. (the song you mentioned) half of the vocals are done by Daran Malakian, the band's guitarist. He's also trained in a special kind of traditional Armenian singing style (I can't remember what it's called), but hearing him do it truly changed my opinion of his skill as a vocalist.
I do like rock, and I listen to it more. Classic rock, alternative, punk...it's all good. I also like the alternative rap group Gorillaz . But deep in my heart, Gothic music is my true love. It just has this special quality to it. So different from all the other genre. :love2: If you haven't listened to it before then I highly recommend it. My personal favorites are Switchblade Symphony, Blutengel, This Mortal Coil, and the Cocteau Twins.
Gorillaz isn't an alternative rap group. Sure, a few (FEW) of their songs have rapping in them, but they're just alternative. Most of their songs don't have any rapping at all (except for the album G-Sides, but those are mostly remixes done by rappers in the first place). Since you probably know more about this than I, would you consider Lacuna Coil to be Gothic rock? I know their really old stuff was, but I'm not sure how you'd classify, say, the album Comalies.
I did vote .... but chose a few. I prefer to think of myself as a music fan who doesn't care about the genre, to be honest I seem to bounce around as my mood changes. Currently it's mostly alt. rock, industrial (recently dicscovered a new band called Jakalope ... thank you Mr. Reznor for pushing them in the right direction they are awesome) and old school punk I'm listening to. Now heres one I challange anyone to classify by genre, my alltime fav. band is TOOL .... just what genre do they fit into? Another band thats constantly falling back into favour with me is Pink Floyd ..... again, what genre do they fit into? Why should anyone bother limiting their preferences by genre? That usually just creates music snobs who get stuck in their own little corner of the art and miss out on a lot of potential good stuff. I was going to mention my fav. guitar player (Robert Cray) but he's pure blues and bringing up someone easily classifiable would have taken away from the point I was trying to make in the disjointed mess I have above.
WORD! Tool is soooooo amazing! I have every album (yes, even Salival!). As for what genre they fit into... that's really a tough one. Progressive (Prog Metal) is where i'd put them. Anyone who's never heard Tool needs to listen NOW or your life will be incomplete.

I thought Otaku Board's music section needed a little metal, because there seems to be a complete lack of it on here! I'll start a few threads, but thought a poll would be a great way to begin. O.K., since I can't post a poll... Choose from: Power Metal Symphonic Metal Death Metal Grind Metal Sludge Metal Melodic Death Metal Doom Metal Speed/Thrash Metal Nu Metal Progressive Metal Alternative Metal Black Metal Metalcore

No problem x kakashi x! And look, I'm not here to bash rap or anything. I love all music, and while rap is definately near the bottom of my list as far as genres go, there's still interesting stuff out there. Candy Shop (well, 50 Cent's work in general) is hackneyed, cliche modern rap music. It's been done countless times by countless artists (50 Cent just happened to have been shot a couple of times, so he reached a wider audience because apparently, him being shot was just unbearable awesome or something). If you want good rap that is actually progressive, check out Jedi Mind Tricks, Focus, and Esoteric. I'm pretty sure they're all underground, but all the beats and sampling are interesting and fresh, and the lyrics have at least some thought behind them. I know that many rap fans are looking for something to dance to, but anyone can throw together some beats on a computer and rhyme to it. Give some credit to those who put some message behind what they're rapping about! There's just not a lot of substance behind Candy Shop. Sure, sex is great and everything, but it's been done over and over, especially within the rap genre (and yes, I know that not all rap is about sex, there's just a lot of it). Like I said, there's better stuff out there that is a hell of a lot more deserving of the kind of praise 50 cent is getting. And you guys want multisyllabic rhymes? Check out one of those rappers I listed above. Those kids have some true talent.

I hate to say this, but I love Kung Pow... I'm a Steve Odekerk fan, and I thought that movie was hilarious. Then again, I have a really wacky, random sense of humor. But again, Kung Fu Hustle is hilarious, awesome, and totally worth the money.

I love horror movies, but, like most horror lovers, rarely get scared by them. The most uneasy a movie ever made me was White Noise of all things (which is strange, because it's not the most remarkable movie out there). I most recently saw the new version of the Amityville Horror, which I thouroghly enjoyed though it wasn't really scary at all, and Excorcist: the Beginning, which I really deeply enjoyed. As far as Saw goes, I absolutely loved it (the storyline was brillirant), but the acting was downright horrible. Other than that, it was awesome. I also have to mention The Ring, which seems to be hated because it got so popular, but I absolutely love that movie. I thought it was very well done, and although it's based on an older movie, I thought it was fairly fresh and creative. And finally, The Cell. I know it's not really considered true horror perse, it somehow always creeps its way into the genre. It was an awesome movie and was very, very original, not to mention artistic.

And the best response award goes to... x kakashi x!
geez, here we go... 1-It was the number one song in America, just proving the amazing amount of stupid people that populate our country. Just because its at the top of a chart showing album sales, doesn't mean its good. Personally, if I had the money I'd buy it just so I could light it "On Fire" and watch it burn to the ground. I'd rather listen to the crackling sound then half the songs on this cd. 2-I've heard more complaints from girls about this song than compliments. Singing about girls as sexual toys is quite the insult, to most girls anyway. Calling it "equal-standing" is just bringing girls to the lower level of 50 Cent's lyrics. Sure, maybe its "equal-standing" but its equally low. 3-Hes not talking about bit*hes and hoes? Who do you think these girls are hes talking about? What is your definition of "hoe" anyway? I don't think you need mine, you can just read the song lyrics right? 4-Not only are the lyrics unmeaningful and cheesy, they're repetative. "Wanna show me how you work it baby, no problem Get on top then get to bouncing round like a low rider" And in the very next verse... "Give it to me baby, nice and slow Climb on top, ride like you in the rodeo" According to 50, shes already on top isn't she? Oh well, point is hes saying the same thing over and over again in different words. Guess it was hard to write a whole song completely based on sex and the degradation of females as we formally knew them. 5-Comparing Blink 182 to 50 Cent is comparing apples and oranges. The only similarity between them is the numbers in their names. A lot of Blink 182's songs are jokes, meant to make you laugh and/or joke around about sex. 50 Cent actually talks seriously and acts badass while he talks about a girl licking his lollipop. How many girls do you know that would sexually pleasure you if you walked into a room and asked them to "ride you like you at a rodeo" (excuse 50's horrible grammar). Also, tons of Blink 182's actually have something behind them. Even if they seem to be stupid, we have no idea as to the actual meaning of the words. A majority of 50's songs are based around the same things. Hoes, money, his "tough life", parties, etc. If your looking for a beat, sure, listen to his music, if your looking for anything else actually relating to musical talent, then listen to something else. 6-I always have to say this over and over again. Do not assume. "Please don't compare 50 Cent to a two year old until you listen to his CDs" How do you know we havn't listened to his CD's, heres a rude awakening my friend, I have. Don't just assume because we don't like it, that we havn't heard it. You have absolutely no idea what we've heard and can't just discount our opinions to make your own look better. Conclusion-I believe you've been owned.
x kakashi x, I love you. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I saw this movie a couple days after it came out, and I loved it! The martial arts were awesome, the humor was fresh and original, the characters vivid, and the spoofs hilarious. I just wanted to see what everyone thought. And I couldn't help but notice that a good portion of the martial arts used were not Kung Fu, but actually Kenpo (unless I'm mistaken, which I very well could be). I'm quite experienced as far as Kenpo goes, so I should be able to recognise it, and there was a large fight scene somewhere in the beginning/middle of the film where these three characters fought a small army of gangsters, and one of the characters explicitly used Kenpo. I know that was a run-on sentence. Sue me. Anyway, I know that it doesn't matter what styles they were using, I just thought it would be fun to discuss. And anyway, Kung Fu plays a massive role in the movie later on, so it doesn't really matter at all. I'll stop now.

5 Most under rated and over rated bands or artists
Jake of Bodom replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in Noosphere
I agree that U2 is overrated. I actually think they're an expirament to see how many years in a row they can sell the exact same song by simply changing the title :P (Sorry to all the U2 fans I may have offended, it's just my opinion) -
I selected "Other" because neither metal nor classical/orchestral were choices :(. And before anyone says anything, metal is very, very, VERY different from rock. Metal offers the most diversity within itself than any other genre of music. I love all kinds of music mind you - blues, folk, classical/orchestral, prog, good authentic hip-hop (not rap so much) - music in general is awesome. Metal just happens to have the most subgenres and different styles. I've also found that the most talented guitarists are in metal bands, and being a guitarist, I find that very appealing.
-
Jonexe, I love your list! I'd have to disagree with you on Slayer, though - but that's just my opinion. Maiden rules, Amon Amarth is awesome, Manowar of course, and Hammerfall is just plain great. Now, for my list: 1. Children of Bodom - Alexi Laiho (lead guitar & vocals) is truly setting the pace for great guitar playing in today's metal. His riffs are melodic, technical, and fast as hell! Then there's the solos... good lord. The keyboards played by Janne Warmen fit into the mix perfectly and create this amazing atmosphere around the music. I could go on and on, but just take my word for it - if you like metal, Children of Bodom is where it's at. Check out the song "Trashed, Lost and Strung Out" (you can download the video here). If you want to buy an album, Follow the Reaper is my personal favorite (Kissing the Shadows is a brilliant song off that one). 2. In Flames - The epicness of some of the riffs these guys play is beyond words. In Flames' music is filled to the brim with mammoth, soaring, beautiful riffs and solos that just take their music to a different level. This is melodic death metal at it's best. They helped set the standard for the "Gothenburg sound". Their latest two albums are very different than their past work, featuring more mellow parts and Anders, the vocalist, does more clean vocals (clean vocals = not screaming... not the best clean vocals around, but hey). If you are more partial to nu-metal, give the album Soundtrack to Your Escape a try (it's not a nu-metal album, but it features more elements that nu-metal fans are accustomed to, and is a good way to get into "real" metal). My favorite song off that album is, hands-down, My Sweet Shadow. If you're already an avid metal fan looking for some amazing metal, check out the albums Colony, Whoracle, or Clayman. The song "Gyroscope" off the album Whoracle is a great example of the amazing riffs that In Flames writes. 3. Tool - The "thinking man's metal". Not the heaviest band out there, but amazing music nonetheless. Maynard's vocals are definately something to note here. His voice has a massive range and he just plain sounds amazing. It meshes perfectly with the music. The lyrics are extremely deep, many times philosophical, and never fail to make you think. The music itself is so atmospheric, I swear I'm living the songs whenever I listen to them. Danny's drumming is incredible, and he knows when it's best to be subtle. Justin's bass lines are pure gold, and makes Tool one of the few bands where bass guitar holds the lead melody just as often as the guitar! And while there aren't any huge guitar solos or gaudy riffs, guitar player Adam lays on innovative playing and unique sounds. He plays what is needed to sound good, and doesn't overdo it. Check out the albums Lateralus and Ænema to see what Tool is all about. I suggest the title track off Lateralus or "Eulogy" off Ænema to start. 4. Opeth - Proving yet again that the Swedish are the kings of melodic death metal. The first thing one notices about Opeth is that their songs average on 10-14 minutes long depending on what album you're looking at. In one Opeth song, you'll hear everything from beautifully excecuted melodic vocals to gutteral and vicious growling, intricate classicaly influenced accoustic to technical and chaotic electric guitar work, numerous solos, multiple time sig changes... these guys are truly eclectic. Check out the album Blackwater Park (my personal favorite song here is "The Drapery Falls"). 5. Nightwish - Symphonic metal has never been done better. Across their 5 albums and numerous EPs, Nightish proves that metal can reach a whole new level of epicness through symphonic accompaniment. Here, string sections might accompany a guitar solo, or Marco's power-metal style singing might second Tarja's amazing operatic vocals. Nightwish puts it all together beautifully. I strongly suggest the song "Ghost Love Score" off the album Once. Another good one is the song "Stargazers" off the album Oceanborn. Oh, and x kakashi x, if you want to check out some heavy girl groups, look into the two most recent Arch Enemy albums. VERY different than Kittie (better, I think). Their vocalist is female on those two latest CDs. Otep's earlier albums (they're called Jihad and Sevas Tra. Their latest album, House of Secrets is very mediocre in my opinion).

My apologies; I thought what you meant by downhill was that they were getting worse as musicians (you followed it up with the comment about how bands should be learning more and developing as musicians - I guess I just got it confused). My comment was based on this misunderstanding, and I'm sorry. What I meant is that they have definately developed as musicians. Like I said, I like the way the older albums sound a lot better. It's just the technicality and songwriting that's improved. I apologize if I've offended you in any way.
-
Well, I'm sorry. It was either that, or get scolded for my post being too long. I guess I just can't win...
trying something new is just fine, however, why fix it if its not broken? As basically everyone has agreed, Iowa and albums like that were much better then Volume 3. Aren't bands supposed to get better with time? Learning more and playing better. In that sense, Slipknot is going downhill, and quickly. I find it that those who liked more softcore and/or acoustic music before Volume 3, enjoyed Volume 3, and thats fan. But thats not Slipknot. I know people have said it is, but its not. If you were a hardcore true Slipknot fan, and you've heard all their albums and songs, then you'd know that Slipknot is not an acoustic band. That is not what they were meant to do. They were meant to play metal. End of story. As for Boxy, I do agree, some of the lyrics are quite good. Maybe they're just not as blunt as the previous albums. Which is what I liked, they said whatever they wanted to say without worrying about the consequences. It was the no holds barred Slipknot that I loved to listen to.
Actually, x kakashi x, while I do like Iowa, the self-titled, and MFKR better, to say that Slipknot isn't learning more and getting better is simply an uneducated remark based on you opinion of the sound of the music, rather than the music itself. Coming from a songwriting standpoint, the songs on Vol. III are actually more complex and difficult to play. I play guitar and love Slipknot (and have since MFKR), so I know what I'm talking about. Like I said before, I like the old stuff much better, but Slipknot has definately reached a new level in the skill department. They're definately not going "downhill" as you previously stated, they're simply going in a different direction. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with an accoustic song or two - the lyrics in Vermillion pt. 2 are just as emotionally charged and well-written as any of the heavier songs they've written. The fact that they stepped outside their normal boundaries shows that, in fact, they are maturing as musicians and learning to appreciate more styles and types of musc.

Yeah, I noticed that (it made me happy). I wouldn't exactly call Janne's keyboard playing "Doors-esque", although I can see where it might sometimes sound like that. But it's awesome that you know them - they're awesome. If you just started listening to them, check out "Kissing the Shadows" and "Trashed, Lost and Strung Out". They're my favorite songs by them.
