Here's my first post being nice about it! :animesmil I guess this is what the whole 'nu-mnetal isnt metal' thing comes down to. Fall, I know we disagree, but Amorphous is the only person to be on my side, so I gotta ride along with it at least for a post or two. Straight up - Korn is a great band! I love them! The ringtone on my cellphone is "Thoughtless" (a Korn song). Their songs don't have bad structure, but they don't have metal structure. For example, listen to how (using Black Metal, 'cause Amorphous brought it up last time) Naglfar or Carpathian Forest writes a song. Compare it to Korn. Huge differnence! Not the way it sounds (I mean they sound way different, but that's not the thing to pay attention to), but the way the song is actually put together. Now I do disagree with Amorphous' on none of them have any talent (listen to how Slipknot's songs were starting to sound there by the end! There were even a few guitar solos *gasp*). And I don't care what anyone says, it takes some true skill to coordinate 9 people to write a song. It's flippin rediculous doing the same with 4 or 5! But anyway, nu-metal is just fine, but the reason it isn't metal is that it has no metal structure, ethos perse. Fall, if you started adding some of the metal we're talking about to your collection as well, you might start to notice a difference. Like I said, I love Korn and Slipknot and stuff, so none of this is against them. Just pick up a Children of Bodom album, or earlier In Flames stuff, maybe some Opeth. You'll probably see what we're talking about. Granted, Nu-Metal is related in one way or another, but barely.

I'm answering to this thread on the way out the door, so I didn't have time to read the rest of the posts... sorry if I repeat anyone else. Anyway, here it goes: First of all, your story is certainly a tragic one... I'm deeply sorry. I have more than a few friends with stories like that one, believe it or not. It's a messed up world sometimes, no? Anyway - suicide. Tried it. Bad. I won't go into detail. Just know that I've totally and completely been there! I've felt that pain, that feeling that festers inside, eating away at every ounce of your compassion and lust for life... that internal darkness that shrouds any slight glimmer of hope, creating a cacoon of despair that grows deeper and deeper with each dreary, colorless day... I know how it feels. But hey, I'm here, and glad as FUCl< my parents found me before I died. (Not at all proud of this, but hey, I'll never actually meet any of you. And for some reason, some people brag about it... no. Not here.) Now none of this is directed toward you, Ceres, because toward the end there you figured it out :animesmil :animesigh . This is just generally speaking. First of all, while it sounds really, really harsh, I think suicide is very selfish. It was hella selfish of me to attempt, and I admit that. Anyway, here's the thing: Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. That's the bottom line. No matter how hard things get, no matter what kind of messed up sh!t happens, the problems are transient. We all feel hopeless at times, just some feel more hopeless than others. If you kill yourself, there will be NO CHANCE AT ALL for things to get better! None. Because you're dead. At least when you're alive, things have the chance of getting better! And there's at least one person out there who loves you deeply and truely. Whether it's a parent or a friend - whatever. Someone loves you. If you commit suicide, you will be putting the people you care about through insurmountable pain and agony. That's stopped me before... I just can't imagine doing that to someone I love that much. Also, another good reason for me personally because I'm a Christian is that, according to my personal set of beliefs, one goes to hell for comitting suicide (it's considered extremely selfish and technically it's murder). I'd rather suffer for 80 years on Earth and go to Heaven then suffer 17 years on earth and then suffer much worse for eternity in Hell. But to many people that's all just religious hogswash.

I disagree with Morpheus - I think the fact that he smokes (especially marijuana) should be pivotal in your decision. That's a pretty big lifestyle thing, and it could - and probably will - become a problem in the future. Then again, this is coming from an avid anti-drug-er. I guess just do whatever makes you happy, 'cause that's what'll matter in the end.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO just when they were getting REALLY awsome!!
Word. Exactly how I felt!

Actually, Joey's mask is far from Gothic (if I'm correct here). I believe it's a replica (perhaps modified) of an ancient Japanese Kabuki mask. Oh, by the way, check out Black-Goat for instructions on building Slipknot masks. Under the section titled "The Band", click on the link "Mask Tutorials". It gives you instructions for the following (they're all linked to their respective page - just click your favorite!): 0 Sid - Gas Mask 1 Joey - Kabuki White Mask 2 Paul - Pig Mask 3 Chris - Long Nosed Mask 4 Jim - Jester Mask 5 Craig - Needles 6 Shawn - Clown 7 Mick - Leather 8 Corey - Dreadlocked Ghoul

That's pretty scary sh!t to hear as a 3 year old, Fall. Sorry dude! :( The dark isn't what gets me scared (I friggin' love the dark - it provides a beautiful difference from the daytime, where we spend most of our waking hours, and something about not being able to see the world around me strikes me as intriguing). What's creepy to me is staring into the mirror for too long. I know it seems stupid, but I feel more vulnerable while staring into the mirror than at any other time. Almost like my reflection could attack, or that something/someone is more likely to come out of the door behind me when I'm seeing it reflected. I'm just wierd I guess, but that's what's scary to me!
-
Now here's the question: Who had the best mask? I liked Corey's first mask (ghoul w/ dreadlocks) or Sid's second mask (that wierd skull thing with the huge round mouth).
Oh well, thats what I have to say lol. Slipknot was going in a direction I just wasn't excited about. I have other bands to listen to that play acoustic songs, and Slipknot isn't one of them. The overly large band was made for metal, and in their earlier works thats what they did. They did it well and even when people ridiculed them I was proud to call myself a maggot. However, more recently I've seen a not so blatant attempt to sell-out. Less meaningful lyrics and just less passion. It's not the same, and personally I'd rather see Slipknot break up then suck.
Yeah, they definately sold out (I found friggin' Slipknot shoes at Hot Topic), but I liked their more recent music better. I thought it was more refined, more complex, and more interesting to listen to. Although sometimes, I just gotta bust out a little People=Sh!t or (sic) for the pure emotion behind it. I agree that there was more passion behind their older stuff... but still, I like Vol. III the best.

I'm really just me, but if we're going for stereotypes, then here's what I am: I'm NOT a Goth, but everyone at school thinks I am. I'm a male with long hair, I wear everything from jeans (mostly black) to camouflage shorts to pants covered in chains and D-rings and stuff. I always wear armbands (I prefer leather ones with spikes) or armwarmers of somesort. I'd say that the subculture I fall into is metalhead. I've got long hair and always wear metal bands on my T-shirts. But if you wanted to be technical, I guess to your average highschooler, I'd be a quasi-goth nerd metalhead. Or as the ones who have no idea who I am and have never spoken to me before, "the creepy goth kid". I prefer metalhead though.

I just picked up a copy of Brom's (not anime, but awesome) Darkwërks portfolio. I'm blown away. I absolutely love his art. Many people don't like it very much because his stuff tends to be somewhat dark in nature, but I think it's amazing. Anyone else a fan? Anyone feel the need to speak out against him?

Sorry for my 'jackassedness', everybody. I shouldn't have attacked Fall the way I did, but he and I have addressed this to each other, so I hope that's going well. I promise not to be like that ever again, and I'm sorry to anyone who's feelings I've hurt or beliefs I've offended. I promise I'm not as much of an @$$hole as you've probably been led to believe... Please everybody, give me a second chance. I've conceded my argument with Fall, he won hands down (though my beliefs on the subject haven't changed). And I sure hope no-one else hits me in the face with a frying pan again. That hurt! :animeswea Okay, here goes my fresh start post! I'm going to answer the thread topic without using "Metal" as an umbrella term, seeing as my view on this differs from almost everybody else's. I love many kinds of music, but my absolute favorite kind of "metal" is fast and melodic. Lots and lots and lots of guitar solos, really fast riffs and harmonies, stuff like that. I'm also very keen on keyboards too! I love atmospheric keyboards as well as the up-front kind with solos and melody lines. Vocals don't really matter to me, as I like most types. I don't like most of the yelpy or high pitched screaming in hardcore bands, but the more gutteral raspy vocals (like Children of Bodom, Kalmah, or Nightrage) are good for me. I also love melodic vocals like Tarja Turunen's (Nightwish - beautiful opera vocals and full-on symphonic arrangements!) or Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica - Now THIS guy can sing, man!). Some Death vocals are alright, but they have to be REALLY good (like Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth - best growl out there, and the guy is an amazing singer!). In other words, I love really pretty music that has a rougher edge. When I'm in the mood, really brutal stuff gets me going. I like it deep and insanely technical, like Nile or Necrophagist. Those fingers have got to be flying all over that fretboard! Really technical death metal can be amazing if the band can actually pull it off. One of my favorite types of music is when metal is mixed with Folk elements ("Folk Metal" - but everyone hates subgenres :animesigh). Like Cruachan (traditional Celtic fiddle and pennywhistle jigs mixed with electric guitars) or Finntroll (Finnish Humpaa music mixed with Black Metal). Finntroll is one of my favorite bands ever! The only band in the world who can pull off the sounds of fiddles, flutes, AND accordians mixed with a blitz of double-bass pattern drumming and crunchy electric guitars! Great stuff - it's almost like 'party metal'! You can just as easily dance a jig as headbang to their music. Just awesome! I also enjoy trance, my favorite artists being DJ Tiesto and Ayla. I love the ethereal, mystical feel of trance, and it's beautiful simplicity sometimes offers me a break from the complexitites of metal. And finally, the roots of my love for music, the great classical composers! Bach, Beethoven, Handel, Tchiaovsky (sp) - all of them. Classical music is one of the most amazing styles out there. If anyone's interested, just ask Tyler Koregaten - that kid knows his stuff when it comes to classical! I hope that's alright for a second start... sorry everbody! Hopefully this is a little better. Oh, and speaking of you, Tyler, I'm curious - that link didn't work for me, but I did see that it was a Children of Bodom tune. Which song did you link to? They're all awesome of course, I'm just curious as to which one you chose.

Hey Ilium, I was wondering if you could explain the difference between the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k combat systems. I'm still sorta deciding which to play, and for me, the deciding factor is the combat.
-
Yeah dude, it just got out of hand, I think. :animeswea I'm sorry. I know we were both in it, but I was much more to blame for it getting like that. I'm glad we respect each other. Let's be friends (here on the 'Boards) from now on. Don't worry, that whole thing taught me a lesson about flaming. And as you probably noticed, everyone agreed with you
-
I've been playing Magic since I was 7 or 8... that's since about Ice Age, I think. I dunno, whatever set was the newest 8 or 9 years ago. I'm pretty sure it was Ice Age though... Anyway, I ran out of people to play with about a year or two ago, so I've been out of the loop. I'm planning on going to a booster draft tournament next week, 'cause I hear the Kamigawa block is awesome. My favorite colors to play are Black and Green. As for D&D, I have a Half-Dragon (red) fighter (I can't remember what level and I don't feel like going and getting the sheet right now). She's hella beefed up with Bastard Swords. And with Warhammer 40k, I'm literally just getting into it. I'm buying a Tyranid army and my friend is buying a Tau army.
-
Alright! Thanks. Yeah, I'm gonna buy a Tyranid army and my best friend is buying a Tau army, so you're story should help me a bit. Thanks.
-
Since you can't recieve PM's, I'll just have to do this. Hey. Look, I just wanted to apologize for all my flaming out there on the 'Boards. I know I have no right to do that. The past two weeks have been extremely difficult for me (in actual life), and I was totally taking it out here on the boards. That's wrong, I realize this, and you especially tended to be the target of that simply because you disagreed with me. I really respect you (at least based on our debate, because I don't know you of course), and I am here full-heartedly seeking your apology.
Not sure if I'm going as of yet, but if I do end up going I'd probably be most excited to see As I Lay Dying. I havn't seen them live yet and I'm sure it'll be awesome. I agree on the point of Velvet Revolver. I just don't like the band, whether they're Ozzfest material or not. Their songs get on my nerves. I really don't care if jesus played guitar in the band, I still wouldn't go to a show featuring them lol.
 Sorry, but if Jesus was in the damn band, I'd go see them no matter how much they sucked!

Wondering if anyone else here plays Magic: The Gathering, MageKnight, Warhammer, Dungeons & Dragons, or any of the other available "nerd games". If so, please reveal yourself here! I'm sure I'm not the only gamer who wishes he had someone to share his interests with.
-
I'm just getting into Warhammer 40k. I'm looking at creating my first army, and I am strongly considering the Tyranids. Any experienced WH40k players here that can offer me some advice or have anything they'd like to discuss? And for anyone who has no idea what Warhammer is, you should learn now because it's awesome. It's a tabletop wargame (war simulation game played with miniatures and fake terrain). It's great fun, and the perfect way to get your nerd on. So... yeah. That's about it.
-
Anyone going? What bands are you excited about? Which bands do you think shouldn't even be on the damn tour? Bask in your excitement for Ozzfest 2005 right here! As for me, I'm super stoked for every band on the tour besides maybe one or two, but highest on the list for me is In Flames. I've been a HUGE fan for a long time and I'll finally get to see them live! Iron Maiden, Arch Enemy, and As I Lay Dying are pretty high on my list as well. Band I'm not super excited to see: Rob Zombie. Just not a big fan of the Zombie. I'll bet he puts on a killer live show, though! Band that I think shouldn't even be on the damn tour: Velvet Revolver. Velvet Revolver? WHAT was Sharon Osbourne thinking? I mean, Slash is in the band and all, but that alone doesn't make them Ozzfest material.

Isn't the word "anime" just the Japanese word for "animated"? Or does "anime" refer to the classic "Japanime" style? 'Cause if it just means animated, then I guess Zim and the Simpsons would be anime, but if it's specific then neither would be...
-
Are they splitting for sure? I thought Corey said that was only a rumor... Anyway, it's somewhat sad. Slipknot was a great band, and with the release of Vol. III was REALLY starting to show some potential for some truly awesome music. Even the first two albums are great listening. I guess the upside to it would be the guys starting their own projects (or even Corey continuing on with Stone Sour - that'd be pretty nifty). I'd be especially excited to see what Mick would do. He seemed decently talented, especially on Vol. III. I wonder what Craig will do though... he didn't really seem to do a lot for the 'Knot :animeswea

First of all, regarding Tool: Tool is considered to be "progressive metal". Progressive metal isn't always a very "heavy" subenre of metal (Porcupine Tree being another example of this). But you'll usually find prog-metal mixed with something else, for example: Nevermore, a prog-power metal band, or Opeth, a prog-melo-death metal band. But anyway, just because Tool doesn't sound as heavy as Mr. Nu-Metal Band doesn't mean that Tool isn't metal and the nu-met band is. It's not just about how heavy it is. People seem to associate any form screaming and heaviness with metal. While both qualities are definately part of the genre, this doesn't make up the whole thing. Plenty of non-metal bands scream or use distorted guitars, and plenty of metal bands never scream once. Many of the bands I was ragging on as being "non-metal" are nu-metal. Nu-metal, I will say again, is not metal music. Sure, metal influenced the sound of nu-met, at times at a great degree. But look at it this way: rock n' roll music was very strongly influenced by the blues - but does that make rock n' roll a subgenre of the blues? No. While they're similar in many ways, they're not the same thing. I can't see anyone saying that Led Zeppelin and John Coltraine (sp?) are the same thing. Led Zeppelin was deeply rooted in blues music, but they're not a blues band. Same thing goes for metal: for example, Korn is influenced by metal, but this does not make them a metal band. And just because Allmusic says that a band is metal doesn't mean it is. The media has been out of the loop as far as metal goes for as long as I've been into it (I've seen big-name company websites call My Chemical Romance a metal band). If you want a real metal reviews site, check out the guys at Metal Crypt. They know their stuff. As for Unearth, they're a metalcore band. Metalcore is a touchy subject, as the line between hardcore and metal can be quite thin. Most metalcore bands are more metal than hardcore - and some are barely hardcore at all. Take As I Lay Dying, for example. They're called a metalcore band, but their song structure is much much MUCH closer to melo-death than hardcore. Unearth is very similar in this way - most of it is metal, they've just tossed in a few breakdowns. As for my being obsessed with the whole label thing, I think I've come across in the wrong way. You see, it's not the label I'm concerned about, it's the integrity of metal as a whole. Like I've said many, many times before, bands like Korn and Ill Nino and Otep and all the rest of the nu-met family are just fine, some are even great - but it shouldn't be associated with metal. It's not because I'm an obsessive catagorizer. Think of it like this: Your family lives in a small village. Your aunt and uncle live just nextdoor. Your family is famous for their beautiful paintings. This tradition has been in your family for years, and you are very proud of it. Your aunt and uncle are famous for their delicious honey bread. Because they are of similar heritage, your aunt and uncle wear similar family crests. You go out into town one day, and someone points you out. He and his wife walk over to you. "Hey sonny, you're one of them breadmakers, huh?" "No, sir," you reply. "I'm one of the painters." The man's wife just laughs and says "eh, your family crests are close enough". This is frusturating. You are proud of your heritage as a painter. You have nothing against the breadmakers, but that's not who you are. Painting and breadmaking are much different. He turns to the crowd and yells "hey, we got a breadmaker over here!" This is where there is a problem. Some of the people who would have otherwise asked you for a painting are not interested in the bread at all. They don't approach you, turned off by what they think you are. I know this analogy is strange, but I hope you see the point. Sure, some of those bands might sound a bit like metal - some screaming here, some distortion there. But you can't go on throwing everything that sounds remotely like what everyone thinks is metal into the hodgepodge. If that were the case then there's plenty of emo, punk, industrial and hardcore bands that would suddenly bare the title of metal. This is not OK. It has nothing to do with the label. Rather, it's about the integrity of the music itself. You'll probably (not saying youwill, I'm just guessing here) tell me that it doesn't matter as long as people think it's metal, or that I'm obsessed with labels, or that nu-metal is metal because it sounds close enough, or whatever. You may not say this, but it's the general reaction I've gotten on this website. Look, I realize I'm not going to change what people think, Fall being a good example (though I truly respect his ability and affinity for debate - I know you probably hate me and think I'm a total elitist prick, but I actually had a great time discussing this with you, Fall. Stay passionate, dude). I also realize, with a certain degree of sadness, that most people won't realize what metal truly is. I guess my point is, I tried as best I could to get my point across. I doubt anyone agreed with me at any point, but I a least feel a little better for having defended the name of metal as best I could manage. \m/

Yup, you were mocking me. :animesigh That's a relief.
-
Please please please please PLEASE tell me you're just mocking me. I'd be really relieved if you were making fun of me. If not, you're a disgrace, and should slap yourself. In other words, I take it you're joking to try to get me to flame again... :animeswea
