Six feet Under - music or mindless yelling?
Jake of Bodom replied to [Sound_Nin]'s topic in Noosphere
I think Six Feet Under is great stuff. It's not all satanic and stuff, though... Their new single called "Shadow of the Reaper" is some really solid death metal. I liked it a lot. -
Solution: iPod. That way you have it all on iTunes even if you lose your iPod. Works for me, at least.

Some of these might already have been listed but oh well: First, some of the greatest stand-up comedians of all time IMO: DANE COOK: HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED BILL HICKS LIVE - SATIRIST, SOCIAL CRITIC, STAND-UP COMEDIAN EDDIE IZZARD: DRESSED TO KILL Some funny movies I love: Wayne's World Dodgeball Monty Python and the Holy Grail Monty Python's The Life of Brian The Princess Bride P.S. Aenigma, since you're such a Toolaphile, you should really check out Bill Hick's comedy. You probably already know his stuff, but in case you don't know, his work has inspired a huge portion of Tool lyrics. Not only that, but he's hilarious.

Nice list! And Tool is metal (progressive [prog] metal). Not only that, but they're absolutely incredible! Speaking of music that kicks the sh1t out of you, does anyone here listen to Nile? Holy crap... words cannot describe the sheer brutality and pure awesomeness of this band. Not only is is brutal, but they somehow manage to make it sound Egyptian as well! They're definately one of the best Technical/Brutal Death Metal bands I've heard in a long time. Plus they have song titles such as "Dusk Falls Upon the Temple of the Serpent on the Mount of Sunrise", "Destruction of the Temple of the Enemies of Ra", and my personal favorite "Chapter of Obeisance Before Giving Breath to the Inert One in the Presence of the Cresent Shaped Horns". What a name for a song! All their lyrics are based off lore taken straight from Egyptian mythology. They go straight to the sources - the actual books, texts, heiroglyphics, etc. - to write their words. The booklets to their latest two albums (I'm not sure about the first because I've never seen the leaflet) has a detailed history of the lore behind the lyrics of each and every song. It's incredible. I guess I will put together a list of my top ten bands for right now (this list changes pretty much every week, but here it goes: 1. Children of Bodom 2. In Flames 3. Opeth 4. Kalmah 5. Bloodbath 7. Nightwish 8. At the Gates 9. Nile 10. 3 Inches of Blood Like I said, that will probably change by tomorrow, but it's what I'm feelin' at the moment. By the way, if'n you kids are lookin' for some good ol' insane, bone crushing, heavier-than-your-house Deathcore, check out the Acacia Strain. I suggest the songs "Passing the Pencil Test" and "Sun Poinson and Skin Cancer". Good stuff. I'm sure I'll get yelled at for this, but I wouldn't consider Slipknot to be metal. Don't get me wrong, there's a very special place in my heart for the 'Knot! It's just more Nu-Metal than Metal, ya know? And Nu-Metal isn't true metal, it's sort of a seperate genre unto itself. And just because of Aenigma, here's a little "kick the sh1t out of you" metal list: The Acacia Strain Nile Mortician Cannibal Corpse Dimension Zero Krisiun The Black Dahlia Murder Have fun guys! STAY HEAVY! \m/ (>.

Yay! You like the real punk instead of bands like Green Day that go around calling themselves punk to make money! Minor Threat is awesome by the way. Their vocalist Ian McKaye (I think that's how you spell his last name...) helped start the Straightedge movement by coining the phrase and upholding the values in his lyrics. I'm afraid I won't be much help suggesting new bands because I'm not really into the whole punk thing, but I hear that BLACK FLAG is pretty awesome.

Fall, the reason people worry about subgenres is, again, because metal is just way too broad to fit under one name. For example, Rhapsody and Cannibal Corpse are both metal bands, but they sound completely, totally, and utterly different. That's why we call Rhapsody "Symphonic Power Metal" and Cannibal Corpse "Brutal Death Metal". It makes tons of sense. It seems to me you just don't want to take the time and effort to learn about the different types. Bands like Korn and Spineshank, for example, actually have a genre, not just "...?" like you say. It's called Nu-Metal (which really isn't metal at all, it's kind of it's own genre entirely). Another reason subgenres are important is if you're trying to describe a group to someone. If you were trying to tell someone what Children of Bodom sounds like, for example, you'd have to say "...really fast guitar playing, it's melodic but at the same time it's heavy, there's keyboards that at times are felt but not heard, and at times form the frontal melody, the vocals are kind of growly/screamy type, the drums are blah blah blah blah" and it would be difficult to get what you're saying across. If you said to me "they're a Blackened Power Metal band", I'd have an idea of what they sound like. Look, just because you don't like or understand it doesn't make the concept stupid. Rhym, I'm glad you liked the tunes I gave you yesterday! I told you Old Man's Child would change your mind about black metal forever! And Dark Tranquillity seemed like your kind of thing so I threw them in, and I can see it paid off. By the way, everyone should check out the "Lords of the Underground Tour" (or something like that) this summer. It features like 15 or so bands, a couple of which are Strapping Young Lad, Chimaira, Throwdown, Lamb of God, and *gasp* OPETH! And that's just to name a few! It should be totally amazing, especially since Opeth is playing. I also discovered a great band for fans of Chimaira who want a little more technical riffng. They're called BLEED THE SKY and they're hella awesome. They sound a hell of a lot like Chimaira, like I said, but the riffs are more technical and melodic. Try 'em out. It's good stuff. P.S. Akari, I like the name Sane Insanity best of the three you listed, followed by Slit Throats, and I liked Insane Sanity the least.

Juke Box and Kamuro, your words have made me smile and feel happy! I'm glad to be respected so. And the answer to Juke Box's question is: the way to get knowlagable is to a) do your research. Find websites and books about metal. It's a blast to read about, and it all makes more sense that way. b) Play the music! If you don't already play guitar or bass or drums or something, pick one up (I suggest elecric guitar :animesmil ). Learning the techniques on your own makes the entire world of metal easier to understand. c) Spend time talking to fellow metalheads! This thread, for example, is a great place to learn and teach stuff. Most metalheads are just brimming with excitement to share any bit of information and lend any helping hand about anything about metal. Most of what I know has been picked up from just being around it all the time. Metal is something I'm truly, truly passionate about (as you may have noticed :animeswea ), and I listen to it all the time. Constantly expanding my musical horizons has helped a lot too; listen to lots of folk and classical music. Metal tends to have very similar song structures as folk and classical. Listen to lots of different metal too. It's definately a world in and of itself. You'll find that as your taste matures, you'll start liking more and more types. For example, up until about three or four weeks ago, I hated black metal. Now I love it! It just took time to ease into the style, understand it's roots, and find the right bands to get me into it. Most of my knowlege doesn't come from books (so I guess that makes me a badass? :D lol awesome, I love you), it comes from the people and bands. If you do want a good resource to get you started, though, try the book Sound of the Beast: the Headbanging History of Heavy Metal by Ian Christe. It's a great comprehensive look at metal's history (and a smattering of punk). I strongly suggest it.

HELLO?!? WHAT THE HELL? YOU GUYS ARE COMPLETELY MISSING THE POINT OF THIS THREAD! YES, IT'S QUITE OBVIOUS THAT MANY COUNTRIES HAVE GREAT BANDS! O.K., you know what, I think I'm just gonna have an administrator close this thread. You guys are all missing the point. I guess I should have called this thread "What country, IN YOUR OPINION, has at least three bands that, IN YOUR OPINION, are really good, even though EVERY COUNTRY HAS GREAT MUSIC." I kind of thought all that was implied, but jeez guys! It was just a fun little thing to see what country would get the most votes. Let it go. It's O.K. And saying that liking Nightwish "defies all reason" or whatever is a really dick thing to say. First of all, there's people out there who hate your music too. Second of all, don't say anything about Finnish music when you obviously know nothing about it. Saying that most of Finland's music is "creepy fantastical goth opera stuff" is a completely ignorant, stupid comment. Most of Finland's metal music is power/speed/death metal, NOT "creepy fantastical goth opera stuff". And what's up with that comment about Nightwish being "this close to death metal"? If you were saying that they actually are almost death metal, you're an idiot and you're very, very mistaken, and if you were saying that people think they're death metal but they're not, you need to realize that pretty much everyone knows that Nightwish is very much not death metal. AAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!! And by the way, the "\m/" sign wasn't used in metal first by Black Sabbath. Ronnie James Dio of the band "Dio" used it first. Dio's grandmother lived with him and his parents as he was growing up. "\m/" was a ward against evil according to whatever beliefs she subscribed to, and she'd raise her hand in that way whenever he was listening to rock/metal music. Eventually he began doing it onstage to represent the misunderstanding surrounding metal, and the crowd caught on. It eventually became the universal sign for metal.

Well, if y'all like Evanescence, try listening to Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation,Tapping the Vein, Nightwish, Sinergy, or Exilia. They don't all necessarily sound like Evanescence, but they're all great rock/metal bands with female vocalists. Nighwish is my favorite of all of those, but Evanescence fans usually enjoy Lacuna Coil the best out of the above mentioned bands.

You'd probably want to check out the Aquabats. Also there's a local ska band here called Insatiable. My band director is in it, so I was apprehensive, but a friend bought me their C.D. and it's great stuff! I don't even like ska, and I thought this was great. I'm not sure if they have a website. Try typing "Insatiable utah" or something (they're from Utah). So... yeah. Peace.
FINLAND! 1)HIM 2)Nightwish 3)Apocalyptica
YES! Score 2 for Finland! Nightwish and Apocalyptica are amazing. Godelsensei, while I see your point, I think you're missing the point. I just started this thread to see which countries people could come up with multiple bands they love for. I know not only one country makes the best music (for example, In Flames and Opeth hail from Sweden, and I like both of them better than Finntroll and Kalmah, both of which I listed for my Finland vote). I just wanted to see what people would say. You see, I'm very partial to Scandinavian music, and wanted to give Finland credit, for example. Another person might love these 3 awesome bands from, say, Italy. They put it up, just to see how it fares against the other countries people are posting. It's just for fun.

I'm glad to see that some of you guys are taking my suggestions to heart (Rhym, I'm glad you loved Opeth - I strongly suggest them to everyone. The album Blackwater Park is a true masterpiece). And Otogi-san, I can't remember if you got Finntroll off my suggestion or not, but either way, I'm glad you love them. They're one of my personal favorites for sure! Speaking of Opeth, they're releasing a new album in late August! I'm beyond stoked. By the way, did you know that they signed to Roadrunner Records? WHAT THE HELL? Opeth on flippin' Roadrunner Records? What's up with that? I'm pretty sure that RR can't mess things up with Opeth though; they're too great. Although it does worry me that MTV.com talked to Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth's vocalist/guitarist). Since when did MTV.com give a crap about Opeth? Oh well. I'm sure things will go great. It's friggin' Opeth. Speaking of Opeth, all you fans out there probably know of Bloodbath, Mikael Akerfeldt's side project. You probably also know that he left Bloodbath to concentrate on Opeth. And you probably know about the new Bloodbath C.D. they released without Mikael. The new Bloodbath C.D. is called "Nightmares Made Flesh", and it's a hell of a lot better than the first one ("Resurrection Through Carnage"). Not that it was Mikael's fault - he's ful

I think Mudvayne stands out because of their bassist, Ryan. That kid can play like no other. The way he mixes finger-picking and slap with normal bassing is amazing. I've never seen/heard any bassist play like that.

Slipknot is not metal, they're Nu-Metal (which isn't truly metal, just to let you know). And here's my "not awesome in the public eye but totally awesome to the people who care" contribution: Children of Bodom Because they're awesome. That's some true, melodic, solo-filled, super-fast, good ol' METAL! \m/

Post which country you think produces the best music, then post the names of 3 bands/recording artists that support your opinion. FINLAND 1. Children of Bodom 2. Kalmah 3. Finntroll 'Nuff said.

Machine Head, Devildriver, and It Dies Today are on tour together right now. I was wondering if anyone has seen them yet and I'd like to know how it went. It should be a great show, if they're coming near you, defnately check it out. What I find interesting about the tour is how different all the bands are. It Dies Today seems especially out of place, but it's pretty awesome that they're on the tour.

Excuse me, did I ever say that Serj wrote all the lyrics because he's the singer? Let's recap.
And Daran didn't write all the lyrics, but he did write most of them.
I said he helped write a portion of them. I'm not an idiot. I know that vocalists don't always write the lyrics. Just because your mom is obsessed doesn't make you an expert. And Toxicity still owns Mesmerize any day.
-
I must say, this is their most hardcore album yet.QUOTE] Wow. I think you're very very wrong. Both Toxicity and SOAD were much heavier than Mesmerize. I loved Mesmerize, so don't get me wrong, I just think it's not quite as heavy as the others. But anyway, my favorite songs are Cigaro, B.Y.O.B., and Violent Pornography. And Daran didn't write all the lyrics, but he did write most of them. Serj still took part in many of the songs. My favorite album is still Toxicity. My Least favorite is Steal This Album, but then again, that's mostly just a bunch of B-sides and rare tracks and stuff like that.
Lol thats true. Blindside isn't christian rock though. I listened to them and was like "No Way" then went to their website. They said they had said that so more people would buy their cds. I almost died laughing. Their lyrics are pretty softcore though. Anyways, heres some more: The Union Underground Type O negative Cannibal corpse Throwdown The dillinger escape plan Megaherz Dry kill logic Devildriver Deicide Arch Enemy Well I tried to get some that weren't already listed, again, and I probably failed that on a few but eh, I tried. All of those listed above are pretty cool.
Arch Enemy, Cannibal Corpse, and Throwdown are total w00t-ness of awesome. I LOVE THROWDOWN SO MUCH! I love their lyrics lots. I don't call myself Straightedge anymore because it's become such a fucl

Folk and Viking metal are just as rooted in Death Metal as they are in Black Metal. Amon Amarth (Viking) or Finntroll (Folk) for example, are both heavily influenced by Death Metal, and in Amon Amarth's case, more so than Black Metal. Anyway, my favorite Black metal style is Symphonic Black Metal. My favorite black metal bands are: Old Man's Child, Naglfar, Dimmu Borgir, Enslaved, and Cradle of Filth (although their Black Metal-ness is questionable... they seem to have a heavier Goth Metal influence than Black Metal). I know none of those bands are "tr00" or "cvlt" Black Metal, but "tr00" and "cvlt" black metal seems so pompous to me... you have to follow a very strict set of rules to be "tr00" or "cvlt", and this usually ends up with bands that sound like crap. They take pride in poor sound production (a hardcore badge of "tr00-ness"), and the best way to secure "cvlt-ness" or "tr00-ness" is to a) have a memeber of your band commit murder, or b) burn a church. Now this was back when black metal truly began in Norway, so I don't know how the rules go now. Trivia: in the first 3 years of Black Metal's conception, more than 520 churches were burnt to the ground in Norway - all by Black Metal bands. That's a lot of churches.

That's because Tool is amazing! And I did mentinon Unearth; it was my example band for Metalcore. Otogi-san, as for 3 Inches of Blood, I don't know if their Christian or not, but let your parents know about the complete lack of swearing or suggestive themes in their lyrics. It's all about fantasy battles, pirates, giant robots, etc. In the meanwhile, here's some Christian bands you might like: A SHORT LIST OF SOME SPIFFY CHRISTIAN METAL BANDS! As I Lay Dying - I love these guys - really high-energy death metal with a slight (VERY slight) metalcore influence. Plus they're a Christian band, so your parents have to let you buy their stuff. Living Sacrifice - Pretty brutal death metal with Christian lyrics. Way awesome. I love them. Trivia: Living Sacrifice's drummer is the drummer for Evanescence. Demon Hunter - Christian thrash influenced metal. They do a great mix of screamy vocals and "clean" (singing) vocals. Blindside - I don't know enough about these guys to tell you much about them. All I know is that they are a Christian band, and that their latest albums are more hardcore than their old stuff. They have one album that's some plain old good metal. Still Remains - Good, solid metal mixed with some slight hardcore influences, all with Christian lyrics. I like these guys a lot, but not many people agree with me. Check them out. The Agony Scene - I know nothing about this band. I do, however, know that they are a Christian band, and that I have a couple of friends who are very, very stoked on them. Virgin Black - Very dark, gothic orchestral metal with Christian lyrics. I like them a lot. Norma Jean - Another band I don't know a lot about. I think they're heavy hardcore stuff, and they are a Christian band. Well I sure hope that helps you out. If you want me to, I can probably research this a little more. I'm a Christian too, so I'd be happy to help. Word.

I picked "Other", because I think Tak is super awesome! But all the characters rule because Invader Zim is, in my opinion, the greatest animated show (or show period) EVER! Jhonen Vasquez is a genius! I mean, he wrote Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, I Feel Sick, and Squee, and invented, animated, and wrote for Invader Zim. Jhonen is so awesome. But anyway, Tak is my favorite character.
Their latest CD (Hate crew death..) was a little disappointing. If you listen to that album and decide its a little boring I can understand it, because its not nearly as good as Follow the Reaper or the album before that (name escapes me). I'm hoping their yet to be released album goes back to the feel of their older stuff. I'm not really big into the metal scene (especially not the scandinavian metal scene) but Bodom really stands out to me. I wouldn't worry so much about the lyrics, lyrics for heavy metal bands almost always are cheesy. Thats what makes them fun, to not take them too seriously.
The albums before were called Hatebreeder and Something Wild. And metal lyrics aren't all cheesy (that's mostly power metal! \m/). Try Tool, In Flames, As I Lay Dying, Opeth, Lamb of God, Trivium... there's a hell of a lot more, these are just upcoming on my iTunes playlist, so they're at the forefront of my mind right now. Metal actually dabbles in some very interesting philisophical, political, and spiritual depths of which many genres never even touch on. As far as Bodom goes... it's about the amazing musicianship, not the lyrics. Many hardcore Hate Crew-ers don't know half the lyrics to a quarter of Bodom's songs - but they can easily sing along with the guitar solos!
-
Evanescence is awesome (it's my guilty pleasure - I've got 8 Evanescence CDs! :animeswea ). What are your favorite songs? Mine are "Lies" and "Farther Away".
I've always enjoyed some of the older bands like Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Motley Crew and Black Sabbath but I don't know if they are metal or hard rock.
Yeah, those guys are definately metal, but in the old school of metal. Zeppelin and [more influentially] Sabbath helped create metal. Most consider Black Sabbath's first album (released February 13, 1970) to be the first ever metal album. As far as Parameaecium, they can still be considered "Unblack" because a) they have a strong black metal influence, and b) lyrics based, if loosely, on Christianity. I picked them as the example because of all the Unblack metal I know of, they have the coolest name :animeswea Metal news: Children of Bodom has revealed the title of their forthcoming album, which will be called "Are You Dead Yet?". IS ANYONE ELSE AS STOKED AS I AM? Probably not. Anyway, you can check out www.scythes-of-bodom.com for more info on that. Is anyone besides Rhym and myself a Kalmah fan? Those guys are amazing, and I was wondering if anyone's a fan. By the way, they got a new keyboard player to replace the one they lost. Oh, and Otogi-san, you wanted some suggestions for good metal, so here's a few followed by my favorite album from that band and a suggested song from that album. 3 Inches of Blood (Advance and Vanquish - Deadly Sinners) Arch Enemy (Wages of Sin - The Enemy Within) As I Lay Dying (Frail Words Collapse - Collision) At The Gates (Slaughter of the Soul - Slaughter of the Soul) Black Sabbath (Paranoid - War Pigs) Blind Guardian (A Night at the Opera - The Soulforged) Bloodbath (Nightmares Made Flesh - Outnumbering the Day) Children of Bodom (Follow the Reaper - Kissing the Shadows) Cradle of Filth (Midian - Saffron's Curse) Dark Tranquillity (Damage Done - Damage Done) Dead to Fall (Villainy and Virtue - Blood of the Moon) Dimention Zero (This is Hell - Immaculate) Dimmu Borgir (Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia - Kings of the Carnival Creation) Evergrey (Recreation Day - The Great Deciever) Fear Factory (Digimortal - No One) Finntroll (Jaktens Tid - Slaget vid Blodsälv) God Forbid (Gone Forever - Antihero) Hammerfall (Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken - Bloodbound) Heaven Shall Burn (Antigone - Voice of the Voiceless) Iced Earth (Something Wicked This Way Comes - My Own Savior) Imperanon (Stained - Shadowsouls) In Flames (Whoracle - Gyroscope) Insomnium (Since the Day it All Came Down - Bereavement) Into Eternity (Buried In Oblivion - Embraced by Desolation) Iron Maiden (Powerslave - Aces High) [a true classic!] Kalmah (Swampsong - Heroes to Us) Kamelot (The Black Halo - When the Lights Are Down) Lamb of God (Ashes of the Wake - Laid to Rest) Machine Head (Through the Ashes of Empires - Imperium) Nevermore (Dead Heart in a Dead World - The Heart Collector) Nightrage (Sweet Vengance - Hero) Nightwish (Once - Ghost Love Score) Old Man's Child (In Defiance of Existence - Black Seeds on Virgin Soil) Opeth (Blackwater Park - The Drapery Falls) Rhapsody (Dawn of Victory - Holy Thunderforce) Rotting Christ (Sactus Diavolis - Athanati Este) Shadows Fall (The War Within - Enlightened By the Cold) Sinergy (Suicide By My Side - Passage to the Fourth World) Sonata Arctica (Silence - Revontulet) Stratovarious (Elements pt. 1 - Stratofortress) Summer's End (Summer's End - Buried Near the Living Dead) Theatre of Tragedy (The Velvet Darkness They Fear - Bring Forth Ye Shadow) Tool (Lateralus - Lateralus) Trivium (Ascendancy - Like Light to the Flies) Maybe try downloading some of those songs or something and see what you like. Give me some feedback if you do! P.S. Box Hoy, Rob Zombie is not metal, and TaTu is DEFINATELY NOT INDUSTRIAL! NO. I'm not meaning to criticize you, I just want you to know that Rob Zombie isn't metal (I don't have anything against Zombie, it's just not metal), and TaTu is NOT industrial. They're more like poppy-trancy stuff. I don't know enough about that kind of music to tell you officially, but it's not industrial.
