What would you outlaw in your fascist dictatorship?
Aaryanna replied to DeadSeraphim's topic in General Discussion
A fascist dictator? Hehe, well if that did happen, first on my list is the people who are cruel to animals. Instead of feeding them to lions we will do to them what they did to their pets, which often is to leave them in the cold or to starve them to death. The really cruel ones I?ll feed to hungry lions though. Mean adults who automatically think they are smarter than kids will have to go back to school to learn just how stupid they really are. My dog is allowed to go anywhere, which means she goes with me no matter what. If the store says I can?t bring her in, it becomes my store and they will be thrown in jail. My special police who enforce everything will be able to read your mind, so any rebellion is instantly crushed. So saying you could revolt and cause problems is pointless, the first thought or sign or rebellion would mean you are executed. Religion would be allowed, but on a very short leash. No preaching, no condemning, no terrorism because others don?t believe as you do. Any religion caught overstepping it?s boundaries will be ruthlessly crushed and the members will have to either one, become non-religious, or join another group. That religion would then be outlawed and further members executed. Crime will be swiftly punished. Since my police will be able to read your thoughts, rapists, murders, and other forms of crime will be dealt with. No whining about religious beliefs or claiming your mommy made you a bad kid. If you killed someone, you die, slowly and painfully as an example to others. You rape someone, well lets just say if you are a guy you?ll be singing soprano from now on. And finally, since I?m the boss, my rules are subject to change without warning. So tomorrow I just might decided that everyone has to have blonde hair and that dumb blonde jokes are punishable by death. -
Like Sandy I too wonder if you have taken your prescribed medications today, and if you aren?t on any, perhaps you need some. If you have this much difficulty understanding that Elves do not exist or that New Zealand has been populated for a very, very long time, well there are medical conditions that can cause such a delusional belief in all sorts of things including Elves, who by the way are from Norse Mythology. I suggest you actually take the time to do some real research instead of reading a few things and jumping to the conclusion that they do exist. I?m actually more concerned with finding hordes of other humans who still believe in witches, hoards of goblins or orks or other such fantasy creatures. Do yourself a favor Prick Wizard, seek professional help, it will do you a world of good.

Earthian is good stuff. I didn't like the primary love story very much, but there's so much going on in the series that this actually didn't have a large effect on my overall enjoyment of it. I'm looking forward to reading the last volume, which--if I remember correctly--is supposed to consist of side stories about Raphael and Michael (who I found to be more interesting than the main characters), among others. I've soured on manga about angels, but Earthian puts an interesting spin on that concept. ~Dagger~
Agreed, there?s so much going on that the love story almost could have been left out. Which is what I like about it. It doesn?t rely on it to tell the story. ^_^ I?m really looking forward to the last volume too since it seemed like there wasn?t enough about Rapheal and Michael in the other volumes. I really liked the different spin they put on homosexual love too. I found it interesting how it said
if we only react to members of the same sex, the population will continue to fall? That?s why there?s a law against love between members of the same sex. If there is any sign of physical connection, it is considered the greatest crime in Eden, punishable by death.
It?s a reason that actually makes sense.

ladydarkness I will be closing this thread for several reasons. First of all it?s in the wrong area as RPG?s are handled in the Arena section of the boards. Also because even if you want to role-play there are certain rules members are expected to follow when starting a role-play. So I suggest you wander over to that section, read the sticky?s posted to guide you in creating a RPG and then you can get started. You can also just click on the link that Sara so kindly provided. Please take a moment to review the Rules and FAQ that is locate on the left sidebar and also read through the IMPORTANT: How to Post in Anime Lounge sticky located at the top of the Anime Lounge. And any other rules depending on the section you are in. You can also use the links I just provided. Although Utopia is highly unlikely for the simple reason that perfection is really not possible. It?s still something worth working for with the understanding that you are not going to obtain ultimate perfection. So though I think it?s a pointless goal I still think it?s worth working towards getting as close as possible. Everyone has different ideas as to what makes a society perfect, but I?m sure there is a common ground of making sure everyone has something to eat a place to live, etc. So even though we don?t reach Utopia we don?t give up on making the world a better place for people to live in.

Well I can?t relate to the younger sibling syndrome, as I am the youngest. ^_^ Since I was an unexpected child by the time I got older my brothers and sisters were already adults who were in the process of moving on. However I?m sure I must have annoyed my older brother as he teased me all the time and still does when I see him. The thing I tend to do is borrow books to read and forget to ask. I always return them and that?s when I get in trouble as the person I borrowed them from usually gets on my case for forgetting to ask. >_< I?m sure it doesn?t help that my grandparents spoil me shamelessly whenever I visit. Something my brother points out on a regular basis. So my response is for him to get married and have kids so they can spoil his kids instead. :p As for my older sister, she and I get along fine, but then she?s older than my brother and therefore probably more mature. ^_^

What do I do? Well what I?ve always done. Read a lot. ^_^ And when I?m not reading I?m either playing with my friends, doing the chores that I?m expected to do or attending school if it?s that time of year. Which brings up the other thing I do when I?m not in school and that?s to go on hikes in the mountains with my mom and my dog. I spend a lot of time outside in the summer, as I like to take a blanket, put it on the grass and then get comfortable with my dog and read in the shade. Oh and I usually play video games a couple times a week.

Well, I am a "Mormon" as the world tends to call it, although in recent terms we have been asked to try and call ourselves "Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" though we know that's quite a mouthful. And for those of you who are wondering, we don't practice poligamy, and haven't for quite some time. The only reason our church supported poligamy for a while was because it was sort of dangerous back then, so when they sent the majority of their men off to help with the war the women were left to travel across the plains by themselves, often with little children, so the prophet suggested that they use poligamy for a while to help out with that problem. And yes, there is some guy running around pretending to be a "Mormon", and as far as I know he has the same beliefs but has said that he and his followers practice poligamy, which, as I said earlier, our church doesn't do. They are just like being another type of religion, except that people tend to say that they are just like the true Mormons. And it doesn't help that he's trying to practice poligamy in a state that doesn't allow it.
Actually I was born and raised in the LDS/Mormon religion as well and if you are going to state why Mormon?s at one time practiced polygamy it?s important that you have your history correct. What you have stated is not correct. The belief that polygamy is acceptable is still part the Church?s official scriptures, namely the Doctrine and Covenants and the fact that Section 132 remains official Mormon doctrine (seeing that the Church has not removed this section) has been a rallying point for anti-polygamy groups whose leaders bitterly complain that the LDS has provided no support, financial or otherwise, in their efforts to assist women and children who have been victimized by fundamentalist Mormons. This is what that section of the Doctrine and Covenants says at least part of it:
And if he have ten virgins given unto him by this law, he cannot commit adultery, for they belong to him, and they are given unto him; therefore is he justified. -- Joseph Smith's 1831 revelation on marriage and polygamy as currently published in the mainstream Mormon Church's Doctrine and Covenants, Section 132, Verse 62
Now to be fair the LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley said in 1998: "I wish to state categorically that this Church has nothing whatever to do with those practicing polygamy. They are not members of this Church. Most of them have never been members. They are in violation of the civil law. If any of our members are found to be practicing plural marriage, they are excommunicated, the most serious penalty the Church can impose." However the original practice was considered a divine commandment from God so it was not some temporary move to help women travel across the plains by themselves. I?m also going to point out that the reason polygamy was discontinued is because the LDS/Mormon Church decided to renounced polygamy in 1890, but the disavowal came only under severe duress. At the time, the United States government was threatening to destroy the financial foundation of the church by seizing church assets. The widespread practice of polygamy was also preventing Utah from gaining long-sought-after statehood. So it was a move to gain statehood but to also keep their assets from being seized for failing to follow the civil laws of marriage that required monogamy. I believe this is what SunfallE meant about members of the LDS/Mormon Church being kept ignorant. It creates a lot of confusion over why others would make fun of the Church, but in spite of stating they do not follow the practice, they have yet to change their doctrine to match, so it looks like a we follow the law of the land, but in reality we do believe in polygamy, so naturally it?s going to look strange that there are others who claim they are Mormon and practice polygamy. And the fact that the Church has never bothered to change their official doctrine (It's been there for over a hundred years in spite of the change) well, it makes it look like they actually support it, just not ?publicly.? In short it makes them look less than creditable and anytime a religion has contradictions in their stance towards a particular belief or practice, others can and will make fun of it. I myself know a number of jokes about the LDS/Mormon Church and truth be known I find them rather funny, especially since some of them require more extensive knowledge of the Church to fully understand why they are so funny. Sojiro47 and AnimeHeroX I have removed your off topic posts. In the future, please keep in mind that if you wish to discuss things that don?t really relate to the topic at hand you need to be using the pm system or an instant messenger service like AIM. As for the actual topic, one of my favorite couples is Momoko Hanasaki and Yousuke Fuuma from Wedding Peach. I know that it?s very common to have the standard couple who initially dislike each other and argue every chance they get, but at the same time it?s charming how they do little things for each other because they really do care. And when they finally do admit it, it?s also sweet how they don?t turn into the overbearing clingy type of couple. I really dislike the type that hang all over each other.

Do you ever feel like that the username you use gives you a set personality? Why do you change your username? Do you feel that a specific username you've used has been given a certain personality by other users?
I suppose on some level it does since I adore my dog and it just seemed natural to show that adoration by using her name for my user name and pictures of her for my avatar and signature. So in that sense it is my personality as I am someone who loves her dog enough for it to be considered an obsession. An obsession I justify by the desire to eventually become a vet. ^_^ Well seeing that I?ve never changed my user name I can?t really answer that question. Especially since I have no intention of changing it. I like it and I?m comfortable with it. I?m sure that others have given me a certain personality based on my user name and such; it?s kind of unavoidable. I find that when others change their user name that for a brief time it?s kind of unsettling, as you?ve come to think of them as being that name. Especially when they change it a lot. It may be because I?m fairly new to online forums and because people don?t usually change their name in the regular world. ^_^

I haven't read it yet, but it's definitely on my to-do list since it's by the author of Loveless, right? Loveless had me hooked with its unique style and excellent story, so I'm expecting that same quality in this series... am I right in doing so? [/color']
Yeah, it?s the same author. ^_^ I?ve only read the first volume to the Loveless manga so I can?t give a complete comparison, but from what I read I would have to say that both of them have a unique style and an excellent story. What I?ve loved best is how the story is rich and diverse and though part of the focus is that it?s a boys love story, its presented in a way that makes it more of just a fact instead of the main focus. Though at one point it does become the main focus. I?m not sure if I?m explaining this correctly, but it stands more on several different and diverse story plots instead of using fan service to get your attention. Not to be mean, but some boys love mangas are more of a Harlequin romance novel (yuck) in that they focus too much on the love interest and neglect developing the overall storyline and Earthian doesn?t do that.

A short while ago I started reading the manga Earthian and not only have I really enjoyed it, but it has become one of my favorite series. Basically (as it states on the back of the manga) the story is that angels are among us. They are scattered across the globe, living in our neighborhoods, observing humanity ? the Earthian ? in crisis? Chihaya and Kagetsuya have known each other since their days at school. They are friends?and possibly more. These two angels roam the world compiling lists of the positive and negative traits of humanity. They are known as plus and minus checkers. If 10,000 pluses are found humanity will be allowed to live, but if 10,000 minus checks are found the Earthian will be destroyed. The story focuses on both Chihaya a plus checker and Kagetsuya a minus checker. It?s really interesting as though it focuses on what they encounter during their search for plus and minuses it?s interesting how they story subtly develops the growing affection between the two of them. It?s also interesting as the artwork is very pretty and it has a nice flow to it when you read it. So who else has read this manga and what did you think of it?

I?m going to go off topic a tiny bit here since understanding my background will make my opinion a bit more clear; that I?m not just another person knocking Mormonism who doesn?t understand what they are talking about. Anyway, technically I am considered a Mormon since I was born here in Utah and attended church with my mom until last year when I decided I wasn?t going to be a member anymore. That stemmed from asking a lot of questions over the years and essentially being brushed off, as a rude child who didn?t know that children are meant to be seen not heard. It also stemmed from reading the book SunfallE mentioned. I already had doubts and that book just confirmed that I was not the only one asking similar questions. Now considering that the book goes on the idea that the Mormon Church has altered their history and made a number of claims that are possibly false, I can easily see why others are making fun of Mormon?s. What would you think if you met someone in a religion that claimed they had translated golden plates when historical documents showed that the translated text most likely came from other documents that already existed? Your first reaction might be to think that the members are a bunch of gullible idiots following a cult. And for some that?s more than enough to justify making fun of them. Is it nice? No. But being made fun of has never been nice or fair for that matter. As others have mentioned the Catholic Church has been picked apart for a very long time. As for being offended by shows like Big Love? Well as indifference already pointed out, it was never meant to be taken as being based on actual members or how the Church actually operates. And so long as they don?t use actual names or imply that it does I see nothing wrong with it. On some level I?d just ignore what others say. Getting upset isn?t going to change their opinion, or stop others from making fun of the Mormon religion. I?m not saying it?s okay, just that getting upset doesn?t really change anything.

I?d be curious to know, since I have not been following the news in regards to that area of the world, did the Palestinian militants make any attempts to request the release of the non-combatant women and children from Israeli jails? Or did they simply cross the border, raid the Israeli military base, kidnap the soldier and then demand the release of the women and children? I know that those two like to fight back and forth a lot, but often what news I do see never mentions if they tried legal channels before going the route of kidnapping or attacking the other and making demands. Although I see no reason for keeping women and children in jail, I also see no justification for killing two soldiers, kidnapping another and then expecting their demands to be met. Such actions are in my opinion childish. I think both of them are over reacting. But to me the killing two and then kidnapping another is the worse offense. Even though they want women and children released, I see no justification for outright murder when demanding their release. And at that point releasing the women and children in response to their demands is like an open invitation or example to others saying, hey we can kill others and make demands and it?s okay. I can't really understand their anger since I have never faced the problems they do, but I agree with Lost Lightbulb in that they need to quit fighting and try to be more mature when attempting to solve issues. I get the impression that both sides are convinced that they are right and the other is wrong and I wish someone could knock some sense into both of them.

When I first started taking books home from the library at school, I didn?t fully understand what the word fiction meant. I was only seven so I suppose that?s to be expected. But for some reason I thought the books that weren?t picture books were in fact stories of things other people had seen. It didn?t take too long for me to realize that like the books that were mostly pictures they weren?t real. But for a short time I really believed it was possible to end up in other worlds by accident.

The only problem is that most voice actors (the recent ones anyway) match what they say to the "mouth flaps" that are in the Animation. Removing even a syllable or two would screw up the timing and would require a totally new pacing of the voice actor's speech. -r2
True, if faced with a choice, one or the other, I'd go for leaving the honorifics out. Sure they are how things are done in Japan, but when you translate to another language you often have to take into account how that language works, and for the most part, titles aren't used in English like they are in Japanese. If I really want to see and hear it as true to the original as possible, well I suppose I would need to learn Japanese so I could watch it without the subtitles. ^_^

I also think that this is comparable to when Neo awakens from The Matrix and found out he had been living an illusion. His body clamped up, he vomited, and passed out again. The transition was by no means a painless one.
I don?t know if it?s quite the same, after all our characters previous lives, as far as we know was not an illusion. So on some level it would make sense that for most of us it would seem unreal. I mean most people who have been in a coma don?t wake up able to move well and then attend a ball in less than an hour of waking up. I would imagine that they would wake up in a hospital of some sort and would be told by a doctor or another professional what had happened. I think the very circumstance of what?s going on lends itself to the surreal surroundings that the characters are finding themselves in. I was trying to write mine on the basis that although she?s acting like she believes it, part of her deep down is still in denial and doesn?t really believe what?s happening.

Welcome to OtakuBoards Killer.Shinobu I will be closing this thread for several reasons. First of all it?s in the wrong section, discussions about manga are in the Manga Workshop. Second, favorites threads are rarely allowed since like your first post they end up being little more than list of what show/manga someone likes. Thirdly, double and tripple posting is not allowed. If you need to add something just use the edit button located in the lower right hand corner of your post. Another reason is expected post quality. Not only does post quality involve the concept of having clear, easy to read posts, along with correct use of spelling, grammar and punctuation, but it involves just how much a poster?s reply contributes, and expands to any given discussion. This is something that is greatly valued here at OtakuBoards, and we encourage members to exceed with their writing skills. Something your opening post does not do. For example you didn?t take the time to explain anything about the series Love Hina or what it is about it that you like.
