I am going to japan!!!(again...)has anyone else been there?
botoman replied to TigerFantasy17's topic in General Discussion
just wondering, but how many people would hate me if i said that i have lived in japan for the better part of two years. and really cant name alot of the places i have been.
I'm almost exactly the same. I lived in the Kansai area and I can kind of name everywhere I've been (the cities, but not too specific) but I can't name for the life of me where I stayed when in Tokyo much less where I visited haha. -
I work at a sushi restuarant called Genki Sushi as kitchen help. Genki Sushi is a kaiten sushi restuarant (the one with the conveyor belt) and I usually work the belt making nigiri sushi and putting it on the belt. It's a pretty hard job with a lot of BS thrown in from the bosses, but it's okay because my coworkers are super kool.

I just recently got into Japanese music. I listen to Utada Hikaru, Otsuka Ai, Bennie K, and Deftech. I also like Japanese Reggae. I found the album for Baghdad Cafe, and they're awesome.

Best Weapon: I think I'm going to go with Guts'(from Berserk) HUGE sword. I mean, he killed 100 guys in one night and fought almost on even ground with the immortal Zod with that sword. Best Technique: I wanted to say Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu, and also Kyo's (from Samurai Deeper Kyo) Mumyo Jinpu-ryu. I'm only on the 18th volume for Kyo, but so far, a few more techniques have been revealed and Kyo seems to have mastered them.

botoman replied to TigerFantasy17's topic in General Discussion
I lived in Japan for nine months last year studying abroad. I lived in Kobe and went to school in a town called Okamoto, near Sannomiya. I got a chance to go to Tokyo too, actually went there twice, once with my friends and the other with my gf. However, I didn't find Tokyo itself to be that exciting. I definitely wouldn't want to live there, but visiting is all right. I enjoyed the Kansai area more so, mainly because I got used to it and knew my way around (mostly). -
My gf enjoys anime almost as much as I do. The only thing is, we tend to like different types of anime. She likes anime like "Fushigi Yuugi" whereas I would rather watch "Berserk." Even so, anime and manga are just hobbies, like r2vq said.

Manga Your manga and what you think of them
botoman replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Otaku Central
After coming back home from Japan, my manga collection just mutated. Naruto: Vol. 1-27 Well, nothing much to say here. I started reading Naruto about 2 years ago I think, and I got hooked instantly. When I went to Japan, I kept up with the Shonen Jump's chapters by reading them in the station waiting for my train, etc. And then before I left, I just bought every volume that was out. Full Metal Alchemist: Vol. 1-10 Same as Naruto. I actually didn't see the anime or read the manga before going to Japan, I just heard it was really good from reading reviews. I went to Japan, bought a used volume 1 and then it started from there. Reading it is a little bit more difficult than Naruto, IMO, but it helps my Japanese and the story is just plain awesome. I also prefer the manga over the anime, mostly because there are more characters and I like how the story unfolds. Samurai Deeper Kyo: Vol. 1-31 When I was done reading Naruto or FMA, I usually felt like I should be reading something to improve my Japanese. And since I don't want to read my textbooks everywhere I go, I figured I needed a new manga series to buy so I chose this one. I thought that since it was an old series it must be finished, and it had samurai and ninja stuff too so I figured win/win/. Well, turns out it's not finished but oh well, story is still good (though repetitive for now - still on Vol. 18). Peacemaker/ Peacemaker Kurogane: Vol. 1-6/ Vol. 1-5 I really wanted to buy a series that was finished and this guy at one of the used book stores in Japan said that this series was complete so I went for it. And I'm really glad I did. I love reading stuff about feudal Japan and this was about the Shinsengumi so hey, I thought what the hell. Absolutely love it so far (still only on Vol. 2 though :animeswea ) Blade of the Immortal: Vol. 1-12 Bloody and it's got an immortal samurai that's supposed to kill 1000 bad guys in order to finally get the chance to die. I was recommended this by a guy at a book store and I haven't regretted buying it (bit too pricy though at 13-15$ a volume). I definitely recommend this one to anyone who loves samurai stuff and graphically violent art (but it is very eye appealing). Chobits: Vol. 1-8 Good story, and Chi is cute. Plus it's a short series and I like short series. Chi is cute. Getbackers: Vol. 1-4 I really wanna go to the store and buy up to the current volume because the story (so far for me anyway) is addicting. And Hevn is hott. Don't really know what else to say about it, but yeah I don't really get tired of reading this series at all. I really need to apply for a credit card so I can go grab the volumes that've just come out. -
Gaming What is your favorite and least favorite NES and SNES game?
botoman replied to Violet Link's topic in Noosphere
Favorite: NES: Bubble Bobble Not much to say here. It's got action, love, heroism, and all the evil villains - in bubbles. SNES: LoZ: A Link to the Past/ Final Fantasy VI Tie. LoZ is awesome on its own and well, FF is the same way. I played both to death despite never actually owning LoZ and buying FF from a friend. Least Fav: NES: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles It was just too hard, but the graphics were kind of cool. It was fun up to certain parts, like the water level where you have to disarm the bombs that are in a maze of electrical seaweed, or when you finally get into the Turtle Van but run out of missiles and can't go any further. SNES: Wolverine: Adamantium Rage I think it was called this, but yeah, again it was too difficult. It was fun, just like TMNT, until you reach hard bosses like that Crystal Dragon or something. -
I try to catch it whenever I don't work, but so far it is a good season. I'm really only interested in watching for Anthony Torres, but now Luke Commo is looking good too.

i have a question for anyone who knows japanese names.
botoman replied to dontmakemeBLU's topic in General Discussion
I was going to say the exact same thing as Chabichou (even guessing "Kaneda"'s name as "money" and "field"). Anyway, to answer the other question: My name is John and it means "Gift from God." My mom named me because I was born prematurely and it was unknown at the time if I would make it inside the incubator. Oh and I stumbled on this site while searching for a Kanji name translator: http://www.japanesetranslator.co.uk/your-name-in-japanese/ It puts your name in Katakana writing pretty accurately (it got my last name almost perfect) so try it out. -
Manga I need a list of dark mangas. Domestic or Import.

Try the horror manga Uzumaki. It's pretty good. -
Whos your favorite J-pop singer or wats your favorite Anime songs
botoman replied to kagomefruitcup's topic in Noosphere
I like Utada Hikaru, but recently I started getting into more J-pop just because I kind of miss listening to it. Right now I'm enjoying Otsuka Ai (especially Sakuranbo), Asian Kung Fu Generation, and DefTech. -
I'm so stoked about this movie coming out. My best friend always keeps me updated about it, and finally the release date is coming up. Anyway, I had a look at a scanned article from a Japanese magazine and the price is looking pretty steep. According to the article, the release date is the 14th of September, but the prices seem to vary: 4800Y for the normal publishing (roughly 50$) and an amazing 29500Y for the limited edition publishing (near 300$). Like most cases, the anime and manga are slightly different from one another. If it weren't so, then, well, there wouldn't be much reason to expose yourself to the other since they'd be exactly alike. But I do agree with you about the Chobits manga being better. I didn't like how the anime ended. Seemed abrupt, or something.

Ooh, come to think of it, a Tenchu anime sounds pretty awesome too.

I completely agree with a Evangelion game, and also a Metal Gear Solid anime (or perhaps just a live action movie?). Well, my suggestion seems kind of lame, but as I was looking around through my games I thought it would've been all right to see GTA made into an anime (or again, a live action movie or something). And maybe see a Trigun game with the same type of engine used for the Gungrave game. [edit] For the GTA anime, maybe follow what happens to Tommy Vercetti or CJ after the games, or even just transform the game story to an anime.

Let's see here: Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson, Adam Sandler, Christian Bale, Jackie Chan, Will Smith, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Kristin Kreuk (she's not in any movies, but if she was, I'd be there in a second :animenose ), and that's all I can think of now.

Can you speak, or understand any Japanese?
botoman replied to MirielleChan's topic in General Discussion
MidoriWaterfall: I give you lots of props for trying to learn Japanese on your own. Just a few corrections to help you out: - You have the "Aho" and "Baka" mixed up a little. In the Kansai area (Osaka) "Aho" is not as harsh as "Baka" but in the Kanto area (Tokyo), it's the opposite. - "Ai shite iru" is "I love you." - "Ni" is 2. "Ne" can be used at the end of a sentence to imply a sort of "right?" feeling. For example, "Kimi mo iku ne?" = "You'll go too, right?" - "Roku" is 6. "Go" is 5. I think you're doing all right on your own, so ganbatte ne! -

botoman replied to MirielleChan's topic in General Discussion
I understand a bit of Japanese. I found an interest in it during high school (and anime of course), and then pursued it as a major in college. I also lived in Kobe this past year studying abroad. I agree with Kitty about the particles. I think one of the most difficult aspects for me are the particle/ verb relationships. When I first learned about a verb, a particle would normally accompany it and so I'd figure that that particle would always just go with that verb. For example, the particle "ni" can be used like this: "Suupaa ni iku," meaning, "I will go to the supermarket." But "ni" is also used when meeting someone: "Tomodachi ni au," meaning "I will meet my friend." There are a ton more that I still have trouble with now and then. -
I'm pure Filipino, though people tell me that I could pass as Hawaiian or Japanese.

Wait, the second series isn't over? I heard the second series ends at volume 5, unless that Japanese guy at that book store lied to me to make a sale. [edit] Oh, about the series, haha. I'm currently reading the Shinsengumi Imon series, though I'm only on volume 2 yet. So far, it's pretty good and at times pretty funny. The setting is what attracted me to the book in the first place, since I love learning about that period of Japan's history.

I love the FMA manga! I actually read the manga first before watching the anime and personally, I prefer the manga better. It just has more depth to the characters, and well, more characters. As Panda and Lindus have said, I enjoy how the story is told. Don't get me wrong, though, the anime is awesome too, but manga appeals to me more in general. It's not that big of a part, but I thought it was funny when
Ed and Al first go to meet Cieska and while she's buried underneath the pile of books, Al says that he can't imagine someone living here and then she calls out. The little chibi Al's reaction was just hilarious to me.
Other people probably may not find it as funny as I did, but yeah. I wish I could buy the 11th volume in Japan, but right now it doesn't look like I'll be getting it anytime soon. Oh well.

Ooh, let's see here: The Boondock Saints Awesome movie. Two Irish brothers pretty much receive divine permission to eliminate evil men - with dual M9 Berettas. Big Trouble in Little China Great movie with great action and humor. Kurt Russell fighting ancient Chinese demon lords with magic spells and monsters. I love this movie. Young and the Dangerous (Movie Series) Set in Hong Kong depicting childhood friends as they rise in the ranks of the Triad gang, Hung Hing. There are, I think, 6 movies, with a prequel and also a side movie about Chicken, one of the main Hung Hing boys. My girlfriend showed me the movies, telling me I'd like it, and sure enough I did.
