Well, many people acutally appreciate Victory Records for its (major) influence in hardcore music. Wether or not hardcore music is melodic is a somewhat subjective view. Yes I will say that some music has a melodic flow and some music does not, but just because a band is not death metal doesn't mean that band's music isn't melodic.

If you are looking for something to liken to The Arcade Fire (the softer songs), may I suggest Sufjan Stevens (Seven Swans). If you want something truly bizarre, The Fiery Furnaces may be to your liking. However, if you have never heard them before, I recomend NOT listening to their newest release, Rehearsing My Chior. Not that it is a bad CD (not by any account) but it is a VERY difficult composition. Instead try Blueberry Boat, or even their b-sides album E.P.. But I still warn you, Blueberry Boat is also quite the challenge. If you want Radiohead, try Lake Trout. Apparently they released a new album this year, something to the extent of Not Them You. I still haven't gotten around to listening to it, but their last one Another One Lost was fantastic. A "classic" psuedo-underground modern rock band (I assume that's what you are looking for) is Sunny Day Real Estate. An interesting little fact is that when Dave Grohl started the Foo Fighters, he enlisted Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith of SDRE to play bass and drums respectively. However, don't be thinking FF or you may be dissappointed. SDRE's How It Feels to be Something On, is one of the CDs I own. Based upon your examples, I think that you should stay away from Avenged Sevenfold. At first, their extremely dark feel and unappologetic metal influence worked well with their extremely poppy production, giving off an stylish evil nature to their music. However, they seem to be going the way of Metallica with their new crap. I'm not very affected, their music didn't mean that much to me anyways. I don't know how you feel about country or bluegrass, but if you're willing to experiment with them, I know a few rewarding bands. If you want something dark and almost gothic, checkout 16 Horsepower or Woven Hand. David Eugene Edwards is the frontman of both "apocalyptic" rock/country bands, possibly similar to some Nick Cave. I also recomend the band Nickel Creek. Good stuff from these guys. Other "weird" bands you might enjoy: Dredg, mewithoutYOU, Cool Hand Luke, Muse, TV On the Radio, Death From Above 1979, Minus the Bear, Hope of the States,Coheed and Cambria, These Arms are Snakes.

I would rather have seen As I lay Dying and Mastodon.
Does no one listen to most of the ones I mentioned or what...? lol
I listen to a few. The Dillenger Escape plan is nice, and they are comming to a city about 30 minutes away, in around a month, with Unearth and ZAO. This is pretty neat, considering it's probably the best hardcore line-up to ever grace Chico, CA. I also enjoy the Blood Brothers very much so, but I disagree with you on their newest album. I feel Crimes was a big improvement on some of their erlier stuff, however it would be debateable as to if it was better than Burn Piano Island Burn.

I just recently made the purchase of their B-sides and Rarities collection. It is very good. But hey, I pretty much think it's worth spending $23 on it just for the acoustic version of The Mercy Seat. I'm not saying the original was bad, it just overstays it's welcome, and Cave's voice isn't recorded to it's best. This version however fixes those problems. As for Nocturama, not bad, but I would suggest Tender Prey, No More Shall We Part, or even their newest, The Abbatoir(sp?) Blues/Lyre of Orpheus. Also, in the movie Shrek 2 one of Cave's songs is played through the guise of captain hook. So in essence Nick Cave played the voice of Captain Hook. Just a little music trivia tid-bit for you.

What does your birth month reveal about you?
I thought I'd just give this a try. mine's is August and it say's Love's to joke. attractive. suave and caring. brave and fearless....
What about all those obese, facially distorted, dorky jerk types, that are complete ninnys and are born in August? I really don't think your predictions are very comprehensive. -
yeah im with these last people, i have way to much crap to list right here. mostly i just get cds from my friends/family and put them on the comp. i wish i had and iPOD...then i would be cool...right?
Apple says YES. Apple believes they are they best. We should all be cool and get ipods. I guess that what is in my "cd case" right now, would probably be: Dredg-- Catch Without Arms Woven Hand-- Consider the Birds Bear Vs. Shark-- Terrorhawk And I'm still waiting for my History (Invades) and Kidchrash cds to arrive in the mail. Gosh I hate ordering things over the internet.

The essentials NO-ONE should be without!
Gen. Andronicus replied to The Drizzle's topic in Noosphere
It's rather interesting to see peoples pick for "best albums ever", or whatnot. I actually find it rather tedious to seperate in my mind what I really hold as great, something that everyone should cherish, and what my current hot pick is. But I'll try for both. Essentials that have lasted the test of time (comming from my viewpoint): Joy Division-- Closer A band that was extremely ahead of it's time, and sadly not ever fully recognized (at least not to the extent I think they should have) for their great music. This album probably has the best and most sadly moving final songs, leaving you sad that it was truely their "closer" (hmmm?). Sunny Day Real Estate-- Diary Though I may prefer How It Feels to Be Something On as the superior album of this band, I can't deny that Diary was their defining release. Many of today's current crop of emo or indie rock bands consider this band to be an influence, and I would feel that's rightfully so. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds-- Tender Prey Again, this album may not be MY first pick when choosing a out of his pack (though, it probably comes in a close second), I fully realize that even though I feel Murder Ballads, Cave's concept album about death and murder, was much more briliantly formed, it's dealing with may not appeal to everyone. Tender Prey is by far not as gruesome, yet still shows his amazing capability to write great story songs. It also helps that Cave has a voice like a god. Zao-- Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest Okay, this is where I admit that during the first part of my musical identity phase, I picked up an ear for hardcore/metal music. Ashamed, no. But rather take it as a disclaimer that I would recomend this to anyone who likes hardcore/metal or extreme rock types of music, whatever you want to call it, but it's not for everyone. In my humble opinion, it's a flawless work of sonic art, by one of my favourite bands. Essentials that are being tested by time (comming from my viewpoint): The Fall of Troy-- The Fall of Troy This is my current favourite band, however because of there relatively short existence as a band, as well as people (they aren't even old enough to legaly drink), I must see if they hold up. This album showcased the bands amazing musical talent, as well as their fantastic songwritting skills. I like them a lot. New CD on Aug. 16th. Fiery Furnaces-- Blueberry Boat This band makes me feel like i'm eating canddy that will make me wiser the more I eat. Epic, fun, and very zany. It would be an interesting show... Well, that's all I want to write about right now. I tried my best to seperate my "fleeting flings", from the albums that really mean something. But who know, everything could change given a few more years. -
I have a 40 GB Creative Touch Zen. It's not really worth listing all my stuff on there here because the thing is completely full. "You won't use up 40 GBs!!" my ***.
HA, that's why I made sure to purchase a 60 GB ipod. I'm not nearly finished importing all my music to it and it's already down from 60 to 45.

the only band on this tour that I've seen before is As I Lay Dying. Although it might be interesting to see them in a differrent (much larger) setting, I really wouldn't go out of my way... However, Mastodon and In Flames would prove interesting, as well as Iron Maiden.

Hey everyone lay off the Jake. In the end it will be us, the superior beings whom enjoy Alaskan-death-rainbow metal, with a slight tinge of melo-black-indie, and a scotch of arabian-skill metal, that will rise above and eliminate all of you.

Worrying about the heafty consumption of natural resources
Gen. Andronicus replied to poo62.2's topic in General Discussion
Let's be realistic here. The world isn't physically able to stop itself from consuming such mass amounts of things like metal, food, space, or oil. How many of us are there on Earth again? Nine billion, last I checked. This means that all nine billion (or so) of us are using up resources, and so many economies are bolted into the ground and dependent on certain products that they can't reform their economy to be some super-enviromentally-friendly thing .
Humans are too sex crazed and un-willing to sterilize, and look at who has to pay. You should ALL be ashamed of yourselves! -
I guess mostly agree with you on that. I actually hesitated listing them, but despite their lyrics, I still think have an emo sound. Even though they're a very original band, as far as their songwriting is concerned, I still don't think they succed in breaking out of their genre influences, which I feel is considerably emo.
Okay, but where are the metal bands you like? You said you like metal, but you HAVEN'T LISTED A SINGLE METAL BAND... Hmmm... again, only ONE metal band (Cradle of Filth). Wednesday 13 is as metal as Cannibal Corpse is teeny-bopper pop music. Hate to break it to you, Fall, but so far, every "metal" fan except one (TheAmazingZLJ) on here has proven you very, very wrong. YES! Finally! I think you're the only person who said they liked metal that actually listed some ******* METAL bands! Thank you! You are my friend, Mr. TheAmazingZLJ! As for me: METAL! I mean actual METAL, by the way. For example: Aborted, Abortion, After Forever, Age of Ruin, Amorphous, Amon Amarth, Angra, Anorexia Nervosa, Anthrax, early Arch Enemy, Arsis, As I Lay Dying, At the Gates, Avantasia, Behemoth, Beyond the Flesh, Beyond This Flesh, Black Label Society, Black Sabbath, Black Steel, Bleed the Sky, Blind Guardian, Bloodbath, Borknagar, Burnt by the Sun, Caliban, Candiria, Cannibal Corpse, Carpathian Forest, Cateract, Cattle Decapitation, Carnal Forge, Catamenia, Celtic Frost, Chimaira, Children of Bodom, Circle of Dead Children, Clifton, Cradle of Filth, Cruachan, Cryptopsy, Darkane, Darkest Hour, Dark Funeral, Darkmoor, Dark Tranquillity, Dead to Fall, Death, Demons & Wizards, Despised Icon, Devildriver, Diamond Head, Diecast, Dimension Zero, Dimmu Borgir, Dragonland, Dream Evil, Dredg, Dry Kill Logic, Edenbridge, Elvenking, Emperor, Ensiferum, Evergrey, Falconer, Falkenbach, Fear Factory, Finntroll, Fireball Ministry, Flowing Tears, Freedom Call, Geasea, God Forbid, Gwar, Haggard, Hammerfall, Heaven Shall Burn, Helloween, Human Fortress, Hypocricy, Iced Earth, Illicit Rite, Impaled, Imperanon, Insomnium, Into Eternity, In Flames, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kamelot, Kalmah, Kataklysm, Katatonia, Khøld, King Diamond, Kittie, Korpiklaani, Kotipelto, Kreator, Lamb of God, Leaves' Eyes, Led Zeppelin, Lilitu, Liquid Tension Experiment, Lost Horizon, Luca Turilli, Lullacry, Lyzanxia, Machine Head, Manntis, Martyr A.D., Mayhem, Mercyful Fate, Meshuggah, Misery Index, Moonsorrow, Mortician, Mortiis, Naglfar, Necrophagist, Neurosis, Nevermore, Nightrage, Nightwish, Nile, Noctournal Rites, Norther, Nothingface, Old Man’s Child, On Broken Wings, Opeth, Pain, Paradise Lost, Passenger, Rhapsody, Samael, Sepultura, Shadows Fall, Sinergy, Six Feet Under, Skinlab, Skinless, Skyclad, Soil, Soilwork, Sonata Arctica, Soulfly, Spiral Architect, Susperia, Steve Vai, Stormlord, Stratovarius, Suffocation, Summer's End, Summoning, Superjoint Ritual, Symphony X, Theatre of Tragedy, The Black Dhalia Murder, The Gathering, The Mandrake, Therion, The Wage of Sin, Threshold, Today Is the Day, Tool, Tristania, Trivium, Tvangeste, Týr, Unearth, Vile, Vintersorg, Vixen, Warmen, Windir, Winds, Wintersun, Wolf, Zyklon, 3 Inches of Blood. There's some good metal for you. Sorry, Rob Zombie, Slipknot, stuff like that... it may be good (for example, I love Slipknot), but it's not metal. Please please PLEASE don't parade around tainting the name of metal by calling bands like Murderdolls and Linkin Park metal! PLEASE DON'T DO THAT! It's not metal. At all. Regardless of whether it's good or not (again, I like Linkin Park just fine), don't call it metal because it's not. Sorry to rant, but I'm so sick and tired of it! Fall said earlier in one of his posts "Heavy Metal, we all know what heavy metal sounds like". Obviously, we don't. In fact, I've rarely found anyone that wasn't an actual metalhead that knew what metal sounded like. It's the number one most misunderstood genre out there, I think. For example, most people associate screaming with metal. Yeah, metal has more screaming than most genres, but half the bands listed up there never scream at all. Secondly, metal is, for the most part, very very melodic. It's beautiful music a majority of the time. It's not just banging on stuff and screaming. The list goes on and on, but the point is this: I love metal almost to the point of a character flaw. I'm very passionate about it, and that's why I defend it the way I do. And I care so much about what is and isn't "metal" because I don't want people confusing the music I love with bands that aren't at all metal. In it's pure form, true metal is (in my opinion) the most amazing music out there. Hands down.
You yourself seem very confused about metal itself, either that or you're making the rules to your own game up as you go along (which is confusing to me). I'm not trying to hurt your feelings or anything, so please don't get upset. In fact, many of the bands you listed are very good and I thik you have a respectable taste in music (as if my opinion on your tastes matters at all). However, you are being very adamant about something that you seem confused on as well (such as listing Dredg under you "uber-metal" list), and it isn't very becoming of you.

Symphony In Peril is a band who's future I am very excited about. Shawn Jonas was a very good vocalist for that band (not so much for ZAO). He had a great stage presence and good vocals. However, he left the band now and is being replaced by John Pope formely of the band Narcissus. Narcissus was an amazing band, I suggest there final album Crave and Collapse (one of my personal favourites) to anyone who likes the band Tool. It was really just a fantastic final album. However, they are one of the most underappreciated bands (in the last 5 years) I know of. Although, they haven't been together for 2 years now, so I don't think that will change anytime soon.

Im not exactly sure when emo became a label for people (instead of a musical genre), but then again anyone with dyed black hair today can be considered punk, so apparently something dumb like that was inevitable. If people are going to use the word emo in a derogatory way than who cares? They probably have their own stipulative definition of what it means to them and they're missing out on a valid way to describe a musical genre that (in my opinion) has concieved quite a few good bands. However, I will admit to many crappy ones as well. So yes, I am a fan of many emo bands. Bands that are to my liking include : Sunny Day Real Estate, On the Might of Princes, Mae, The Appleseed Cast, Coheed and Cambria, and The Gloria Record.
