Anyway, like Darren said, I spent my Fourth in the hospital after the car I was in with friends was wrecked by a drunk driver running a red-light. I escaped with a concussion and bruises, but it still resulted in my being stuck in the hospital until the evening of the next day. So no barbecue or fireworks like I had originally planned. Utah does have a pioneer day on the 24th with a smaller fireworks show so I'll have to make due with that. By then I should be more healed up and less tired from all the damn meds I was given to take. [/COLOR]

He was only partially paying attention to the current set of exercises with just one scythe that Karl was running Adrian through. It may have been over three thousand years since the war but he had not forgotten the various techniques and teaching methods that he and others had developed in order to quickly bring someone up to speed. One never knew when a mission, assignment or a battle would come up, cutting any or all training short. The lessons learned had been harsh and unforgiving as many lost their lives to battles that they were ill equipped for. Even after the war was officially over with he had not stopped looking for more efficient ways of teaching someone to fight and defend themselves. There had been a lingering sense of uneasiness that had been difficult to shake and he had diligently continued training himself. But time had moved on and though he did not trust the talk of vampires really being gone, things had settled back down. The Shinigami had slowly moved back to their normal duties. People moved on and before long, even the memories of those who had died began to soften and fade. Not forgotten of course as some things were impossible to forget. One might not think about it all the time anymore but they never forgot. Astera was sitting on the armrest of the chair next to him, watching the training in silence. She didn?t need to ask what was going on, or what Karl was teaching Adrian. She knew it as if it was her in the circle. Adrian?s doubts and questions were foremost on her mind, including the more obvious one of why Adrian had not been properly trained. She looked over at Gavrie. ?[B]How come the basic training is so terrible?[/B]? Gavrie often wondered about that himself, why the standards were so lax. He didn?t have an answer for Astera and though the look in her eyes indicated that she wasn?t really expecting one, he still replied just the same. He looked back to the training area, Astera doing the same. ?[B]I don?t know.[/B]? He finally said. ?[B]I?ve asked that question many times over the centuries and the only answer I get is that it?s not needed.[/B]? Astera snorted loudly. ?[B]What idiot decided that? The one who is sitting safely on this side of the gate? The one who doesn?t have to worry about whether or not they will die because they were given an assignment they were not ready for?[/B]? She sighed. ?[B]I?m sorry Gavrie, I shouldn?t snap at you.[/B]? ?[B]There?s no need to apologize Astera.[/B]? The silence was uncomfortable, finally broken by both of them giving their attention back to the training going on. There wasn?t much to be said since neither one of them had the answer they wanted. Though forgoing any unseen events, at least Adrian and Astera would finally get the training that in his opinion; they should have gotten in the first place. [CENTER]-------------------------[/CENTER] ?[B]How many were lost this time?[/B]? Gavrie kept his voice flat, emotionless. It was easier that way. Or so he told himself. He knew he was fooling no one. There was nothing he hated more than to lose someone who wasn?t ready and there was no mistaking that the reaper before him was far from ready. It was next to impossible to determine the age of a Reaper. Unlike humans or other species, appearance was meaningless. But it was easy to see the uneasy look in the worn, battered and tired Shinigami standing at attention before him. He couldn?t have been assigned to the area for more than a month or two. That look of barely concealed terror was unmistakable. ?[B]I?m sorry sir,[/B]? the young reaper stammered. ?[B]We were overrun, only three of us made it back.[/B]? Gavrie held up a hand, silencing his attempts to explain further. There was no need; he already knew what had happened. ?[B]Go and get cleaned up. Take a moment to rest as well alright?[/B]? Gavrie waited for him to nod before the recruit hastily retreated to one of the other areas of the makeshift camp. ?[B]Tell me that reinforcements are coming Kevin.[/B]? He did not turn around to face his aide. ?[B]I don?t give a damn if they want us to keep those blasted vampires from overrunning this area. I won?t keep sending out more Shinigami to die needlessly.[/B]? What Kevin would have said next was lost at the sound of a commotion coming from the other end of the camp. There was no sense of alarm or that of their enemies, the vampiers. It was clear that something was going on though. Gavrie took one step forward only to halt when Kevin grasped his shoulder. Puzzled he turned back to see what he wanted. ?[B]What?s the deal?[/B]? ?[B]This is.[/B]? Kevin held out a tiny slip of what appeared to be a single sheet of paper. Frowning, Gavrie took it from him. The actual paper was blank. It was the sealed message attached to it that was important. His frown deepened as he turned back to watch the fuss, a flash of blue caught his attention and suddenly he realized what was going on. ?[B]Is that who I think it is?[/B]? ?[B]Yes.[/B]? ?[B]So they sent him to deal with the mess here.[/B]? ?[B]That?s what I?ve heard.[/B]? Gavrie gave off a tiny derisive snort. ?[B]I wonder if he even knows how to fight.[/B]? ?[B]I hear that he?s different from some of the other higher ups.[/B]? Kevin replied, shrugging when Gavrie gave him a long hard look. With an audible sigh he turned his attention to the message he had been given. It only took a tiny whisper of energy to unlock it. Jeff just suppressed a sigh and resisted the urge to take Samantha by the arm and drag her to the shuttle himself. “[B]To be frank ma’am a civilian such as you wouldn’t have a clue when it comes to understanding when their assistance is actually needed.[/B]” It was clear that Major Sijan was holding back her irritation. “[B]I recommend that you head back to the shuttle for not only your own safety but for that of the passengers as well. So unless you’ve been handing out that information, there is no where the passengers could have wandered into that we cannot follow.[/B]” She placed her right hand on her hip and leaned forward just a touch. “[B]I’ll say it again, we don’t need your assistance nor do I need you getting underfoot either. This is not open to debate; this is my professional opinion and duty. Your safety and that of the passengers and crew comes first. So get moving before I have someone do it for you.[/B]” Jeff waited tensely for Samantha to say something but when she did it was not what he expected her to do. “[B]Very well[I] Major[/I].[/B]” She replied stiffly before she moved to head around Sijan and back towards where the shuttle would be docked, her brusque movements betraying her irritation. Jeff kept his gaze to himself other than to glance briefly at Sijan as he passed by her. He offered her a brief nod of thanks for making his job easier to get Samantha back to the shuttle. Whether or not she understood was another matter, though he imagined that she did. [/SIZE]

[COLOR="Indigo"]I don't read or watch the news as often as I probably should. I end up getting too caught up in reading for school or reading for fun. When I have time, I'm more interested in doing something I consider more fun, like playing games or watching a show I really enjoy. I do usually try to check a couple times a week though since I hate being totally out of the loop as far as current news goes. I also have feeds for the weather that are always on display when I sign into my computer though. For some reason I like knowing what it's like outside at a glance. [/COLOR]

The Major was keeping her expression neutral but Jeff didn?t doubt that she was annoyed. ?[B]Here we are,[/B]? Samantha entered the room where the computers for many functions of the station were located. She wasted no time, completely ignoring the Major and the others with her as she moved instinctively to one of the operating terminals and began to take a look. ?[B]Let?s see if we can get the power restored so we can check on the escape pods.?[/B] She ignored the Major?s stern look before she too turned to a different terminal to check the logs in regards to the escape pods. ?[B]Jeff, please check the rest of the rooms to make sure none of the passengers wandered into this area.[/B]? ?[B]Yes ma?am. Though with the doors not working?[/B]? Samantha smiled and stood up. ?[B]They would have worked before we arrived to this area.[/B]? She started heading towards the door further back in the room. ?[B]I can restore partial power long enough for us to check the escape pods, but without going to the stations power source it will only be running for a very short time. It lead into a break room with tables and chairs in the center and storage units along the far wall for keeping the crew?s food. He looked to Samantha who was closing the door to the third room. ?[B]Nothing but storage boxes in that room.[/B]? Samantha immediately headed back out to where the computers were located; the Major was waiting for them. ?[B]I?ve checked the records for testing the escape pods. Three of them did not respond to the last check according to the records.[/B]? Major Sijan stated. ?[B]Thank you Major, if you could take your group over to the doors leading to where the pods are located, I?ll enter the code to activate the power for this area. We?ll only have thirty minutes before the system defaults and shuts things back down again.[/B]? She took a seat at one of the computer terminals. ?[B]Once we?ve done that we can go to the main power source to the station and fully restore power if necessary.[/B]?
