Anime What do you look for in an anime and what do you dislike in one?
Horendithas replied to Magus's topic in Otaku Central
I like anime that has good character development. Stuff that?s a bit more serious or stuff that?s more towards comedy is often what I look for. I also like series that have either hints of yaoi or yuri, or actually is that type of series. The thing I don?t care for is the ones that rely too much on fighting sequences. I do enjoy watching them, but I tend to tire of them too quickly. Like Naruto, Full Metal Panic and Neon Evangelion, The fighting scenes get really old really quick. Though some of that might be because so much of it in the dub version is dragged out, as often I will watch one in the subtitles only to find that quite a bit of dialogue was added that wasn?t there in the original. A good example of a series that relied more on character interaction instead of actual action sequences would be the Crest of the Stars Series. I really enjoyed that show as it relied solely on the main characters, they did such a good job of it that the few action sequences that were in it had a very powerful and lasting impact. It made a short episode seem much longer as it almost felt like you were a part of the show. Another thing I don?t care for is shows that are filled with too much comedy. Though they are fun, often the lack of taking anything serious tends to get boring after a while as well. Fruits Basket is a good example of one that doesn't make that mistake, it has a nice blend of humor and the other more serious side of exploring the characters personalities. It just makes the humorous parts even better as getting to know the characters makes them more real in my mind. -
Anime some good anime recomendations!
Horendithas replied to inuyashaXDkiss's topic in Otaku Central
In that case, how about you try this again when you are more awake and can take the time to properly post. Currently this thread is pretty much spam as the title and the opening post do not match at all. I suggest you take the time to review the Rules and FAQ located on the left side bar of the forum. Another good thing to read would be the sticky at the top of this section titled. How to post in Anime Lounge. Once you've done that, feel free to re-create your thread with a better opening post as to what you actually wish to discuss. ~indifference Thread Closed -

So has anyone else had trouble finding crafting materials?
I had the same problem as well. Even doing your best and going back and getting everything once you get the
ring for dissolving rocks so you can get to areas you couldn?t
still left me short on crafting materials. And now that I?ve been playing the hardest level it?s really going to suck when it?s time to beat the game. I?ve thought about going a different route altogether and using other materials to upgrade my weapons for the final fight as some of them you can outright purchase and one of the most important ones you can fill up on just by being sure to visit enough of the levels in the Sphere company before heading for the top floor. I?d still rather do what you are talking about and use the
boots of prowess since they provide defense as well as an attack boost.
You will be able to purchase them later, but like you said, it?s after you?ve already beaten the game. About the only other way I know to get the stuff is to get the scroll that lets you grant one of your characters the battle skill Lucky Stars.
since getting the stars fills up your battle gauge for you.
It?s a pain in the butt to actually get the stars during battle though. But if you do and get a nice bonus battle gauge going, then the monsters near the town of Peterny often drop crafting materials after battle. I haven?t had much luck with that though as I tend to miss the stars.

Well, from the way you guys make it sound, I never want a roomate now! They can't be all bad, though. Sometimes it's nice to have company...
Well the whole point of this thread was to discuss roomates that annoyed you. If it makes you feel better, over the years while I've been in college I've had eight different roommates and other than the one-druggie girl, all the rest have been just fine. In fact, my current roommate is a great gal and we have a good time going to movies and doing things when we have the chance. ;)

I think this is more of a suggestion and feedback issue so I?m going to move the thread. Anyway as for the actual question? It may not be an issue of less people, but rather one of the information is a bit different when you are looking to see who is online. When you click on who?s online, it now only shows what the members who are logged in are doing, where before it showed everyone, including all the guests. But if you simply go down to the list on the main forum index that says Currently Active Users: you will see a total and then a break down of which ones are members and which one?s are guests. At this moment while I am typing there are 15 members and 159 guests. So just clicking on who's online doesn't give you the whole picture. Also, many people are back in school again and I?m sure that if they are like me, they have less time to spend online than they use to. ;)

And like I already said, post! :catgirl:
I'll second that along with a suggestion. You could always put up two chapters at once instead of just one. Especially since I'm thinking that the next chapter is a little on the short side.

Plastic Surgery - Controversial or not?
Horendithas replied to Pumpkin's topic in General Discussion
Well it may be controversial for just changing your appearance, but like Panda mentioned, the things they can do with plastic surgery for people who have been injured is downright amazing. As for doing it just to change your appearance, it depends on what they want and why. I can see someone who?s small and has a very full figure wanting to go a little smaller. Or say your nose is kind of big, and by big I mean obviously so. Getting things like that done I don?t see an issue as they aren?t huge modifications to how the person really looks. And on some level, I would imagine there is some comfort involved, at least with the first example. But the ones where they are obsessed with looking younger and such, that in my opinion is just stupid. Though it?s their money I suppose and they are entitled to spend it however they please. I suppose you could look at it this way, the demand for plastic surgery just keeps advancing the techniques, so even though some of it isn?t really necessary, those who really need it benefit from the constant improvements being made. So in the end everyone wins. -
As easy as it would be to say something screwed up my life, I?m not going to do it. I will say that bad events influenced my life, but screwed it up? Sure bad things can really put a damper on one?s life, but in the end I?m the one who decides if I?m going to let it stop me from going on and still working on my dreams and goals. And since my life is far from over, saying an event screwed it up is inaccurate, as I?ve no way of knowing what the future will hold. It may have made part of it very annoying and messed up, but my entire life? Not likely. I?ve got far to many good memories of stuff telling me that my life is not screwed up.

All of that would still take it's toll in death and injury. Before this test when they were deadlocked in their little childish squabble about who wants to talk to who and how there was a better chance that we could avoid that. With this test that has faded a bit.
True, but I kind of agree with SunfallE, at least in the sense that people are making it out to be more of a threat than it really is. On some level, even with the talks I get the impression that they are going to do what ever they want anyway. Not that they should give up on the talks, but I don't think they intended to even try to reach an agreement. I've gotten the impression all along that they had no intention of giving up nuclear testing.

Anime Why Do People Love Anime So Much?
Horendithas replied to NightAlchemist's topic in Otaku Central

I also think cartooning in america leads to marketing products too often, while anime seems more for arts sake.
Every time I hear someone say this I just want to laugh. As Aaryanna and r2vq already pointed out, anime is far more commercialized than American cartoons. Just to clarify even further, they didn?t list the art prints, card holders, clear files for holding school papers, bookmarks, danglers (which are little character prints that hang on your window with a suction cup), fasteners that clip on zippers, necklaces or earrings, first aid kits (that?s right you can have a Naruto themed kit with band aids and such), Lint free eyeglass paper, scented candles, mouse pads, magnets, wind chimes, coasters, bottle cap figurine sets, book ends, bath and grooming kits, picture frames, tarot cards, cloth napkins, Christmas ornaments with your favorite characters, day planners, idol cards, mirrors, memo pads, post cards, wrist straps, and so on. And even between the three of us there is still stuff that we didn?t list.
I think that there's often a misconception when it comes to Anime and art. From what I've seen, although (or possibly because) there's a lot of cartoons in the west aimed at a younger audience, there's also a lot more freedom when you do see the artistic sides. The Japanese, too, have a lot of pure garbage animations, you just don't get to see them here since they're garbage. -r2
Quoted for truth, I think that people often forget that we are only getting the series here in America or what ever country you live in, that was actually successful. All the bad anime probably never gets aired elsewhere. As for the actual topic, the main reason I enjoy anime is I like how it has quite a bit of variety. I also like it for the yaoi and yuri anime and mangas as well. I?m sure you might find something similar here where I live in America, but I?ve yet to see any that I?ve actually liked. For whatever reason, a lot of American shows and cartoons are horrible at innuendos of a sexual nature. But that?s probably more of a personal taste on my part. I just prefer British TV for the regular shows and Japanese anime for the animated side. I think both mediums do a much better job than those who attempt it here in the US. -
I?ve had more issues with crazy neighbors than with roommates. I did have one particularly nutty roommate, though she and I never had issues with each other. The problem she had was she was into drugs. It wasn?t a huge issue until her parents cut her off when they found out that she was using the money they sent her for school to pay for her addiction. She would just lie about attending classes and such. Once that happened she got a job, but of course she didn?t make enough to support both herself and her habit. As a result she was often late paying the rent and started attempting to get into my room to look for money to steal or things to sell to the pawn shop. I knew she had problems so I never left my room unlocked. Then just when the landlady was about to kick her out she suddenly had plenty of money, though where she was getting it from was a mystery. This continued for several months until one day the authorities showed up and arrested her. Turned out that she was finding kids online using services like myspace and other blogs to convince teenagers to pose nude for pictures, she claimed that she was looking for models for a company in California. She even had a storage place that she rented where the kids could meet her to pose for the pictures. It was pretty easy apparently cause all she had to do was download them onto her computer. Then she would turn around and sell the pictures online. Last I heard she?s still in jail for doing that.

Come on now what is this world comming to......??
It would be so easy to do a simple search on the web to find all sorts of crimes just like this one. Cases where it seems like people did things over the stupidest reasons. I would be very surprised if the guy flew into a rage over just a trivial thing like toilet paper. It would be interesting to see the psychological evaluation of this guy as I bet he is very messed up. Besides the news always tells it in a way to attract more readers and what could be more surprising than imaging someone willing to kill over toilet paper? The sad thing is his roommate may not have even realized that the other one had such issues, so being attacked may have come as a complete surprise, especially if the guy was the type to keep to himself. It?s pretty easy to do when you have roommates. With work and school it?s easy to go days and not even see the other person. Still to kill over something like that, sad.

I?m not much of a junk food eater. I don?t care for soda since the carbonation or perhaps it?s the syrup they use just makes me sick to my stomach. I?ve never cared for potato or corn chips as they usually are terribly salty. And candy is just to sickeningly sweet. Occasionally I?ll have some cake, minus the frosting since it too is just a sugar fest. Blech! Probably my biggest thing I like that?s fattening and probably not that good for you is Ranch dressing. I just love that stuff on salads, veggies and even crackers. I don?t know if you would consider salad dressings junk food, but it?s probably the most unhealthy thing in my kitchen.

My one and only experience with a tornado was the one time we had one here in down town Salt Lake City, Utah. I don?t remember any strange things falling out of the funnel or such, I just remember feeling surprised since tornadoes aren?t something that happen very often here in Utah. It was a bit surreal, as it just seemed more like a twilight zone moment instead of an actual tornado. So I guess the thing I learned was that just because it isn?t common here, doesn?t mean it can?t happen.

The ironic thing is that my parents marriage was arranged. It wasn?t any type of religious or cultural thing so I?m not even sure why my grandparents were determined to see that they married each other. When my parents were still kids they objected to it claiming it was barbaric and such. And after years of them arguing as teenagers with their parents. They finally agreed to call it off. What makes it so ironic is a few years after it was called off, the two of them had become such buddies in their desire to get out of an ?arranged? marriage that they ended up falling in love and getting married to each other anyway. So to make fun of the situation they had a mock ?shot-gun? wedding. The pictures of them on their wedding day with their parents pretending to make them get married is just too funny. And now the two of them are approaching their 40th wedding anniversary. So though I think love is important, just because a marriage is arranged, doesn?t mean you can?t love the person. Though I think it should definitely be an option for the kids to decide to not get married if they find they do not like one another.

Congress Passes Detainee Interrogation Bill
Horendithas replied to Retribution's topic in General Discussion
I can't say that I'm thrilled with it. It's just one step down the slippery slope of abusing power in the name of fighting terrorism. By abandoning the laws that other countries uphold I feel that not only is it a slap in the fact to the American people, but to other countries who have supported us. It's not the first time our government has done things in spite of heavy disapproval from both it's own people and those of other countries, and sadly I suspect it will not be the last. It's all too easy for this sort of thing to get out of control, which is why there were laws to protect people in the first place. You know there's something wrong when those in power feel that they should be exempt for being punished for wrong doing. -
I agree with Aaryanna, the additional conversation is a nice improvement. And in my opinion it defiantly helps to build the growing relationship between Jason and Celestia. Anyway, I know you have more ready so post! ;)

And if you think censorship is an invasion, just imagine anyone being able to broadcast what ever they want into your homes, or even come to your home and put banners on your lawn saying whatever they want. I can pretty much guarantee that it would get ugly real fast.
Quoted for truth. It?s easy to think of censorship only in the light that it takes away freedom. After all as DarkFactor pointed out, at one time it was heavily abused. But as DeadSeraphim also pointed out:
A politician listens to music with aggressive lyrics toward the government? He's offended, he assumes others are, he lobbies to get it removed, bam, the music is gone. They've already tried it before, but only managed to get stickers slapped on the CDs. If they were given the actual right to remove and silence things that they 'believe' is volatile, then we'd be in a whole world of trouble, and not just for music and special interest groups.[/SIZE']
It would be all to easy for people in power to turn around and put us back on the level of censoring things that don?t need to be removed. Though I do agree with the decision to put labels on the CD?s. I also agree with Papa Smurf:
We need smart censorship. Not non-existent censorship. Not total absolute censorship. Smart censorship.
Getting rid of censorship would in my opinion be a mistake and yet at the same time there needs to be a system of checks and balances to ensure that it doesn?t get out of hand. So that we don't have the problem of CD?s with either offensive or explicit material being banned altogether or being put on the shelves without a warning label on them. That just makes sense to me as it makes it easier for customers to make informed purchases. It?s the responsibility of the artist to make sure the appropriate label is on their work and at that point if someone buys it and complains, it?s their fault for failing to read the label when they purchased it. Your Favourite Kind Of Alcohol [M for drug use, oooooh]
Horendithas replied to DeadSeraphim's topic in General Discussion
I actually don?t drink. For the simple reason that it takes very little alcohol to plaster me. I assume it?s because I?m on the petite side and unlike some of the guys I know who are nearly twice my weight even a simple beer is enough to get me. On the flip side, my mom uses different stuff all the time for cooking. I don?t remember what she uses, but she?s got some great recipes that call for different stuff. Like beer batter fried fish. Very tasty. -
I don?t actually, unless you consider grants and scholarships for school. I do work, but it?s volunteer work that I do not get paid for. However, since the type of work I do is central to my major, it?s something that later on will help ensure that I get a job in my chosen field as the experience I am getting far outweighs getting paid at this point. I do occasionally get care packages that often include a little cash as well as goodies from my parents. Which is a nice gesture, but hardly necessary as the stuff I get for school is usually enough to pay for all my expenses. Though it is nice to have that cash when there?s something out there unrelated to school that I really want to get. Like the newest Zelda game coming out in December. It?s perfect timing. I will finish up with finals, get the GameCube version and then spend my holiday immersed in the world of Zelda.

I for one don?t think Astral Projection is real either. Instead I think it?s a state of mind, like it?s mentioned in the book Aaryanna quoted in that it is mistaken for a real experience. It is real, but I think it?s real within your own mind and not in the real world. Not that there is anything wrong with thinking your spirit is out of your body, I just don?t think it actually is. I would imagine that with practice and patience, one could learn to induce the Lucid Dream state Stephen LaBerge is talking about by mediation or other methods. Or they might even find it possible to find ways to help trigger it as they are dreaming in the night. It?s been a while since I actually read his books, but I remember that it discussed different ways to help you enter a Lucid Dream state. So I think Astral Projection is a phenomenon where people think they have discovered how to leave their body, when in fact they have simply figured out how to enter a Lucid Dream state. If I remember correctly the book also talked about different levels of awareness for Lucid Dreams so it would make sense to me that Astral Projection is one of those levels.

Could you please show me the point where I implied that, because I thought I very clearly said the opposite. I tried to say that it is far more rare for your neighbor/relative/friend to be a psycopath and a murderer than a drunk driver. But of course you people seem to have the right to condemn people just off the bat. I at least know, coming from a family of alcoholists, that things are rarely that simple.
There's no need to get worked up Sandy, I misunderstood what you were saying. It's not your fault, but it's often the argument around here that drunk drivers are someone you know where the other more vicious criminals aren't, even though they too are someone you know. People here are often act shocked that someone is a murderer or rapist and yet ignore the ramifications of someone being a drunk driver as if it's no big deal when in fact it is a big deal. Last time I checked the number of deaths due to drunk driving was as high as the number of people murdered in the same time frame here in the US and yet people continue to act like it's no big deal. I wasn't trying to give you a hard time. You live in a different country so the implication that I picked up from your post probably isn't accurate since it?s probably different where you live. When people say that here it?s what I just outlined, an attempt to act like we should love our neighbors and support them instead of recognizing it?s a sickness that we need to deal with. And while I don't think it warrants the death penalty, it definately needs to be dealt with on a more strict basis for repeat offenders.
-

I repeat, we are not talking about manic murderers or rapists with no conscience here! The people who drink and drive are your neighbors, your relatives, your schoolmates, your colleagues, it could even be you!
Murderers and rapists are also your neighbors, your relatives, your schoolmates, your colleagues and yes could even be you! I?m not saying you are Sandy, I?m just trying to prove a point here. The impairment that comes from drinking comes after the drink has been taken. So they can make the choice before hand to not drive. And if that means to not drink when they have to drive home then they should not have that drink with their dinner or at the party they are attending. Or they should have a designated driver so that it?s agreed upon in advance who won?t drink anything that night. My friends who drink do this. They take turns being the designated driver when ever it is an issue. And if there isn?t anyone to drive, they don?t drink! Saying they are someone you might know does not excuse idiotic behavior. And though I don?t think the death penalty is necessary, I do think the laws are far too lenient when dealing with them. Maybe it?s better where you live, but like I quoted earlier in this thread over 16,000 people died last year alone due to drunk driving here in the US. They did not care if their reckless behavior hurt anyone around them. If they truly cared they would at least try to be responsible so they are not out driving while they are drunk. That in my opinion makes it even more sad as they know they might hurt those they care for and yet they still do it anyway.
I can definitely understand yours and indifference's point of views on the subject, but having grown up in a country that doesn't execute it's capital offenders, I guess I just can't see any truly valid reason to kill anyone no matter how horrific their crimes.
Before my brother?s death I was against the death penalty. That one event changed my view on it completely as I began to understand why others were for it. But at the same time, I still would have no problem with it being removed if killers like the one who murdered my brother are kept behind bars for life. My desire for them to be executed was not revenge but to keep them from getting out and doing it yet again. It seems like being stuck in a cell knowing that you will never be allowed to be free again would be a much better revenge as every single day of their lives they would have to live knowing that only when they are dead, will they finally be allowed to leave.

Having said that, a specific version of Zelda is actually being developed for Wii as we speak. I don't know when we'll hear about it, but it's definitely being worked on...and it's being developed from the ground-up as a Wii title.
That?s like the ultimate teaser James. I don?t suppose you have more information on that? I feel like drooling here, I haven?t even got my hands on the newest Zelda and they are already working on another one! I may not get the Wii immediately, but once that comes out I definitely will be getting the Wii system. ;)
