The best concert I've ever seen (and possibly of all time) was Trivium and Amon Amarth in support of Children of Bodom. I'd be hard-pressed to find a concert in the U.S. that tops that.

Don't worry, Rifles, I wasn't gonna attack you . I guess I really do have a reputation around here... Well, chobitslover90, it's already been iterated and reiterated, and shall over-iterate it: System of a Down and Disturbed are not Metal bands. Metallica is (although due to St. Anger, I'm embarrased to admit that it is). If you like Iron Maiden, Amorphous's suggestions are (as usual) perfect. Iced Earth would probably be a great starting point. It's got a great blend of thrash and power metal that you'll most likely enjoy a lot.

In answer to your questions: Guitar I learned on: Ibanez GAX-70 Guitar I currently us: BC Rich Platinum Pro SE Pearl Warlock, as well as the Ibanez on occasion Guitar I wish I had: Jackson RR5 Yay! Guitar! The almighty axe! I play a handful of insturments, guitar being my weapon of choice. I actually can't read music (which I should get started on... I can read flute music with no problem, but I'm just too darned lazy to learn it for guitar :animeswea). I guess I'm decent... I'm self-taught, and most of my self-teaching has been inspired by true Metal music (by the way, a steady diet of Children of Bodom and Yngwie Malmsteen can actually improve your playing! I swear by this!). I've never really owned an accoustic guitar, so that world is foreign to me. I'd love to pick up a Classical guitar (nylon-string accoustic) and learn some stuff there, though. Currently I'm working on soloing technique (scales, arpeggios, etc.). It's a blast. Sure, it's frusturating at first, but you'll start improving tremendously once you get over that "beginner's hump". I'm not sure what kind of music you're into, but I suggest listening to at least a little virtuosic music (Classical composers such as Vivaldi, Paganini, and Bach, and true Metal artists like mid-career Children of Bodom, Yngwie Malmsteen, and mid-career In Flames are great). From personal experience (I can't guarantee it, but it sure helped me), listening to stuff like this will help your ear and encourage your playing. Best of luck on your endevors! I hope it brings you as much joy as it's brought me!

You don't have to pretend to be kidding, it's OK if you think I'm rude. Many people here on the 'Boards do. Don't worry, it's fine if you like them - tons and tons of people do. I was just posting up my opinion (which tends to be a little too strong at times, I'll fully admit :animeswea ).
I really can't say what's "metal", but I know those bands are not that. I listen to mostly "metalcore" and metalcore is a lot more closer to metal than Slipknot and Disturbed. If I had to put them into a category, I would call them, somewhat heavy nu-metal, which is completely different than "metal".
The fact that you know this puts tears of joy in my eyes!!! :animecry: Finally! Thank you, Heero! Thank you!

Children of Bodom' new album - Are You Dead Yet?
Jakehammaren replied to Jakehammaren's topic in Noosphere
Yeah, check out the song Kissing the Shadows off of Follow the Reaper. That song pretty much sums them up, I think. It's fast, beautifully melodic, and has about 2 entire minutes of duelling solos between the guitar and keyboards. It's amazing! Most people can't get past their vocals, which aren't the best, but listen to the music, not the voice. -
Hmmm, Heero Yuy and Jakehammaren bring up an interesting point. I'm interested to hear why you guys beleive bands like Slipknot and Disturbed aren't Metal. Now, I wouldn't define them as Heavy Metal per-say, as I leave that title to the hard rocking, heavy drinking, coke of a groupies #!# blowing bands, but I would atleast define them as Death Metal. I personally define Metal by it's fast tempo, heavy percussion, lots of emotion (in this case LOTS of anger), and, of course, lots of screaming. Now, some of you may disagree with me, so please, if you do, respond and tell me what you think metal really is. And while on this subject, my personal biggest pump up song has got to be Metallica's Fuel. And If you say that song isn't Metal....your crazy.
Well, they're definately not Death Metal, and since this thread is not for such a discussion, I'll just PM you with info. And don't worry, Metallica is definately a Metal band! :animesmil

Children of Bodom' new album - Are You Dead Yet?
Jakehammaren replied to Jakehammaren's topic in Noosphere
Well, considering that this is the first Bodom cd I got (I downloaded some of their other songs), I was impressed. It's fun to listen to, but yes, it is a bit more bland than I expected. I've heard some of their good stuff, so I know that it only gets better from this cd. I haven't really checked out the lyrics yet, I was a bit saddened that they didn't put the lyrics in the insert... I actually found the package lacking overall. I do like the cd though, and the bonus track is uhh... interesting... I'll probably be getting Follow the Reaper next week, along with that new-ish Opeth cd.
Follow the Reaper exemplifies what Bodom is all about! Good choice. As for Opeth, don't buy ANY of their albums until you own a copy of Blackwater Park. It's their best album by far, and marks the pinnacle of their career (IMO). So yeah, get Follow the Reaper by Children of Bodom and Blackwater Park by Opeth. You'll be set for WEEKS! -
Children of Bodom finally dropped their new album titled Are You Dead Yet? a few weeks ago. I'm an extremely avid COB fan, so I'd been waiting for this album with furious anticipation. I finally got a hold of the disc and tore it open with a voracious hunger... and found myself feeling dismally bleak after the album's close. The CD was a huge dissapointment. I never, ever would have expected Bodom to put out an album like this. It's lacking almost everything that made me love them in the first place! It's still an OK album, but if you compare it to Hatebreeder or Follow the Reaper, it's nothing. The best tracks on the album are probably Bastards of Bodom, Next In Line, and Trashed, Lost & Strung Out. TL&SO is probably the album's best. It's the only song that really gets me going of this disc. It's actually one of my favorite Bodom songs. But that's pretty much where the awesome ends. The rest of the album is a bit bland (as far as Bodom goes). The cover of the Ramone's Somebody Put Something In My Drink was pretty fun, but I've had a copy of it for months (it was released previously). It just seems like they lost the flowing, melodic sound that made them awesome previously. The solos seem a bit lacking as well. They're shorter and less passionate. We won't even discuss the lyrics, but I'll put it this way - they still suck, as they did before. But Bodom was never really about lyrics anyway. Anyone else have feelings about the new album?
There are some Death Metal bands I like and some I dislike. It's not particularly my favorite genre, since it basically sounds like someone belching into the microphone. As I Lay Dying is a great band... well, their new cd doesn't really appeal to me... but I like them nonetheless. After AILD, I'm not really sure what is or isn't a Death Metal band. I tend to get told something's Death Metal only to find out it's Metalcore or something. Overall, I like Metalcore better. Oh, Jake, I got the new Bodom cd, it's awesome.
AILD is Metalcore. Go forth and partake of your newfound knowlege! I'ma go make a thread for the new Bodom album. See you there, Rifles!

Anyone else on the Boards listen to Death Metal? If so, let us know your favorite bands so we can discuss (If you say Slipknot, I will find and slap you - they're not a flippin' Death Metal band)! Or if you want to know what Death Metal even is (because many people have huge misconceptions about it), ask any questions here! Alright! Death Metal!
When I want to get pumped, I flip on heavy frikkin metal, baby! I get my surround sound stereo system on high volume and put on my CDs. Slipknot, Disturbed, System of a Down, Static X, Amen, Bad Acid Trip, I think you understand...
I won't get into this, but none of those are metal bands at all. Disturbed's new album was not shabby at all, though. Finally some friggin' solos!

I think I actually posted here a long time ago with a previous screen name, but I think I need a redeux. In Flames - Minus In Flames - Trigger These two songs always bring up a very deep emotion from within me. It's very strange... I can't place my finger on what the emotion is exactly, but it's extremely strong. I want to cry, but I also feel really comforted at the same time. Something conjures images of winter, the field behind my house covered in snow, the big, lone tree stands ahead of me, blanketed in soft white, and there's clouds rising from my mouth... I must have been listening to these songs during that segment of time. The strange thing is that there's nothing special in particular about that stroll, it's just what happens in my head when I hear Minus or Trigger. I vaguely remember that walk being very bittersweet though... Anyway, enough of being sentimental. I need to get in my longboat and go pillage something now. For glory! For gold! For Odin!

You guys want falsetto done the friggin' right way? Listen to 3 Inches of Blood! That's some real falsetto! \m/ (>.

How'd I know you'd be a Trans-Siberian Orchestra fan, Ailes? ;) TSO is incredible! No-one plays Charol of the Bells like they do. No-one. And, if I'm not mistaken, they helped Metallica with their (IMO) best album ever, S&M (Symphony & Metallica). The reason TSO might remind you of Nightwish is the fact that they helped establish Neo-Classical Metal as we know it. They might not be a Metal band per se, but they were pivotal in setting the pace for that style. You're so lucky to have seen them live! They play absolutely beautifully, as you said. I'd kill to see them in live concert!

Well, my friend, would this be any fun at all if we always agreed? :D

I don't say they're not talented because I don't like them. I never ever do that. For example, I can't stand Slayer, but they are a talented group of musicians. I honestly think AFI is not a very talented band. I've heard Sing the Sorrow, Very Proud of Ya, All Hallow's EP, and Black Sails in Sunset. Yes guys, I am very opinionated (as you all know :animeswea ), but my opinions are never unsupported. I've heard old and new AFI, and my opinion remains strong. Look, I realize that it takes talent to even write a song, but that's about where their talent ends as far as I'm concerned. For example, the Very Proud of Ya is a freakin' three chord jamboree! Every song had similar if not the same changes and progressions, all they did was change the key (and sometimes they didn't even bother to do that). I'm not saying that they suck because mallcore kids listen to them, I'm saying that their [newer] music and image is practically geared toward them. Their old stuff had more integrity, I'll give it that, but I still wouldn't go as far as to call them talented (or the "best band in the world", as some say). I don't even call [older] Children of Bodom or In Flames the most talented bands in the world, but they are, however, my favorites. Then again, what do I know? I'm just a metalhead! :D (P.S. I do listen to lots of Classical, Folk, Trance, and Rock music too!)
davey has the best voice range that i have ever heard.
Obviously, Davey must be one of the only voices you've heard. I'm gonna beat around the bush here, because I don't want to sound blunt: Davey sucks. Whiny doesn't equal good range. Ever heard of Tony Kakko? Roy Kahn? Michael Kiske? No? I suggest looking into them and their bands (Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, and Helloween, respectively). Those are men who can actually sing. Davey has no range. Just because he can whine at a high pitch and *gasp* whisper and *omg* talk doesn't make him a good vocalist at all. RiflesAtRecess, you may be correct: they are talented. Not as musicians (definately not), but rather at marketing their Hot-Topic ready image to angry/"depressed" teens. This is a talent that has helped them gain commercial success. I despise AFI, but I must admit: my opinion is heavily biased. You see, I appreciate music that takes skill and passion to create. No wonder I don't like AFI! They lack the qualities that set the standard for my taste! How closed-minded of me. Love, Jake P.S.:
i cant even hit those notes!
Whine harder.
When I first read the letter, I couldn't get my jaw off the ground. How sad, and what a slap in the face to make it public like that! Like I said on the Nightwish board, I don't think I'll listen to the new stuff they come out with. Tarja was the best vocalist I have ever heard in my life, and it just won't be the same without her. It's not just how well she sings, it's her distinct voice. Tuomas is contradicting himself, but I'm still behind him (and Tarja, because I can't pick sides like that. I lubb' all of them) because he said the fans were most important. However, firing Tarja is DEFINITELY not pleasing for a lot of fans. But he also has to please himself and the band, which I believe is more important than trying to make fans happy. This even coming from a raving Tarja-Tuomas-Nightwish-fan, who included them in her mega-satire! I had to make them Japanese after this news though, which sucks. Now everyone is Japanese (there used to be ten Japanese characters, five from America [AFI and Marguerite Moreau] and five from Finland [Nightwish]). But anyway. I'll just stick with Tarja-Nightwish, because it's what I know and love and I'm fine with it. Besides, I don't like Once as much as Century Child, it was losing the Nightwish essence. We can only wish them the best in their whatever-endeavors.
It'd be totally rediculous not to listen to their new stuff just because Tarja's gone! I know you're a huge fan of Nightwish, and they're still Nightwish without Tarja. She was definately the least important part of the band, and there's better vocalists out there. And just because firing Tarja is disappointing to some fans doesn't mean Thuomas is contradicting himself. He definately has the fans in mind (they didn't come to the US because of her. Firing her is definately integral to making US fans happy - they can come here now!). I can't wait to get my hands on some new Nightwish material! I think that with a more passionate vocalist (Tarja doesn't even like metal, and never showed up to practices) they'll go much farther as a band. I think this could definately be a step up for Nightwish. And for the sake of being argumentative, Once blew Century Child out of the water! I thought Century Child was their weakest album.

Upon the blackened night they ride, brandishing shining steel Eyes filled with visions of victory, they race through the moonlit fields The taste of blood on their lips... Loud cries challenge their enemies as they race, reddened song flowing through the rythmic beats Their hooded leader towers high, black as the churning sea, with steel, malice, and powerful magic he enforces his dark decree Kill them, kill them all Feast on their flesh and bone After the battle he will return to his iron throne

No, it gets worse. The main reason was to meet her friends at the movies, not even Christmas shopping! I think they could kick more *** without her. She doesn't even like Metal.
-
Okay, here's how this works. I will post the first line of a song. You follow up with your own line. RULES: a) these must be your OWN ORIGINAL WORDS! Don't be cheap and use lyrics from a real song. b) they have to fit into the song. If the line before you was "the dragon's fiery breath scorched the dwarvern town", you shouldn't add something like "I ate croutons last night". Okay, I'll start this off: Upon the blackened night they ride, brandishing shining steel

^^^ I'm 17, but that doesn't mean I haven't made my rounds as far as "older" music goes. I saw Jethro Tull a couple years back - that was incredible. I hate Pearl Jam, so no, I haven't seen them and wouldn't even if I had the chance.
