Lets see, right now I'm listening to various works by Richard Wagner. Especially this little gem that I found recently: Ride of the Valkyries...Arrangement for 8 Pianos. That's a performance that would have been amazing to see. :catgirl: Those guys are absolutely fantastic!
You win. Oh, and that reminds me: Hall of the Mountain King. I know you know what I' m talkin' 'bout, Rachmaninoff.
Metalocalypse, while most people clue in on the squalls of violence and foul language fail to understand the true metal inspired themes and references in the show. As Jake pointed out, I bet none of you got the Grishnackh character reference unless you were a death metal fan (or a Lord of the Rings fan).
It had nothing at all to do with death metal or Lord of the Rings. I can see the joke went over your head too... *sigh*
That's not even remotely close to what I meant >_>
Ah. Then what ever did you mean?

Dethklok's music is surprisingly good. But there are a few things that piss me off about the show/music, and none of these things have anything at all to do with the show and music itself, rather the people who watch it and listen to it. Seeing as the show was marketed extensively in Hot Topics the world over, it's fanbase got increasingly annoying and ignorant. Most of the viewers of Metalocalypse completely miss a good 50% to 75% of the jokes in each episode because they don't know anything about actual metal. There are so many subtle references to the metal world that make the show quite hilarious (I was in hysterics over the Mr. Grishnackh character, which I'll bet most - if not all - of you didn't get), but the entire mallcore community just laughs at the violence and thinks that Dr. Rockzo is the best part of the entire series. Also, most people who buy the Metalocalypse CD would never, EVER listen to music that sounded like that were it not for the show, and will still refuse to listen to real metal after purchasing it. Just my two cents.
Meh, Papa Roach had some okay stuff on Infest. I dug it when I was 11. And I wasn't pigeonholing Amon Amarth into the metalcore genre. I'm aware of what they are. They'd be a good springboard to get your scene kid friend into real metal, though. I don't know, I think the main thing was that a lot of it just seems like really simple riffs without much variation. Put one of their verses next to a verse from oh... Phoenix Bodies... and tell me what the difference is. Amon Amarth just feels too "chugga chugga" to me compared to even some more bland metal bands like Saviours. They just seem to borrow a lot of their riffs from stuff like As I Lay Dying. My my, Jake. You're looking fabulous today.
Amon Amarth has, due to their record label, become tied to the vastly, unendingly stupid "-core" scene, where kids with their tight pants, comb-overs, and bad taste in music listen to them for ignorant, ironic reasons (OMG VIKINGS ARE LIEK AWESOM AND FUNNY LOLZ). Their music isn't metalcore in any way, though. Just listen more closely to their music. Lots of intertwining tremolo riffs, a lack of stupid "-core" vocals, actual key changes, and refreshingly complex song structures make them completely devoid of anything scene at all. I don't know what song you listened to, but give "Fate of Norns", "A Thousand Years of Oppression", "Gods of War Arise", "Hermod's Ride to Hel - Loke's Treachery pt. 1", and "The Last With Pagan Blood" a listen and see what you think. And I'm not pissed. You're just wrong. -
Most likely the decline in a lot of rock music, is rap. Well, that's how I see it. The teenage population is with hip-hop, and they dare not listen to rock. It's really a shame, because rock is just SOOO deep.
What is this "decline in rock music" you speak of? -
OB is, by far, the most uptight forum in the universe. It's not your fault - it does take getting used to.
Heh... you've obviously been nowhere near the Gaia Online metal forum. There are people on there thousands of times worse than I've ever been. Ever. Yeah, try to fathom that, will you? And I'm listening to [insert metal band that is truly awesome but no-one else on this forum would enjoy] and I love it because [no-one really cares, but it probably has do with tales of ancient warriors, elder gods, epic battles, and/or the vast splendour of nature and the feelings of nostalgia, sorrow, and pride it evokes].
Not according to wikipedia. Slipknot would have to make albums with no sound at all to be the opposite.
"pitch (including melody and harmony), rhythm (including tempo and meter), and sonic qualities of timbre, articulation, dynamics, and texture." Anything highlighted in red are elements that Slipknot lacks. Oh, and correction: no sound at all would be better music than Slipknot.
If I can find it I'll give it a try, I don't use P2P to get songs and the place where I do get them doesn't have that many good or rare ones. SOS Brigade Hare Hare Yuki
No, that link to was to a MySpace site, so it's streaming audio. You don't need to download anything at all. Just go to that page and it plays automatically.
Worthless music is teh ****. Like Slipknot. I instantly lose credibility for liking them everywhere I go. Do they still sound better than everyone the person who discredited me likes? Hell yes!
Are you forgetting that Slipknot is in fact the opposite of music?
-
Not all. Mainly the ones that you seem to name. The ones that play music that's a violation to your ears and that doesn't have any feeling in it whatsoever. :whoops:
Man, you're so good at listening to music. I hope one day I can be as perceptive as you.
You need to find something else to masturbate to.
BUT TEH MARZ VOLTAS IS THE BEST GUITARSISTS EVAR!!1!!1!one11!!!1 ZOMGS ALL OTHER SUGGESTIIOLNS ARE WORTHLESS LOLZ!!!!!111!11!!!one1!
I'm not really a heathen, roman catholic to be exact. I just like the norse lore and ideas, because of it's fantasy and historic value. So little is actually known about it. Queen Bohemian Rhapsody
But still, did you listen to the song?
-
That really says a lot. I lol'd.
Yes it did. Now I'm going to join the club and, instead of naming interesting musicians, I'm going to go jizz all over these Mars Volta albums.
-
Never heard of them, and if they are dark and whiny bands like Evanescence then I'd rather not. Ahh, good song for the morning: Kansas Carry on Wayward Son
Hahaha! No, no, no... both those bands are pretty much the opposite of Evanescence. It's epic Viking music. If your heart is truly a Heathen one, as your screenname suggests, you will love this. Here, go to that link and listen to the song "Jumalten Kaupunki": http://www.myspace.com/moonsorrowfinnougria
I'm more of a metal-punk head so my opinion here is limited. Acey Slade who played in bands like Dope, Murderdolls, and Trashlight Vision. He's amazing. Especially the stuff he in TLV which was influenced by Guns N' Roses, Iggy Pop, and The Stooges. Another great guitarist is Michael Ammot of Arch Enemy. Micheal played in the band Carcass in his early days and was one of the inovators of grindcore before crust and grind intermingled much. His stuff can be either as hardcore or melodic as he wants. There's also the brothers, Anders Björler and Jonas Björler, who played for At The Gates and now play in The Haunted. I think the stuff they pulled out in At The Gates was some of the most fendemental music to come out of the gothenberg death metal movement. Lastly, there's Kerry King because he's the god of thrash metal and Slayer rulez.
Possibly the most consistently underwhelming list of guitarists so far... :animesigh
Billy Joel We didn't start the fire I have no idea what you are discussing, but this is what a thread like this should consist of.
Someone with a screen-name such as yours should be listening to Falkenbach and Moonsorrow. And Revolver, if you don't realize that Coheed is hack-prog, you just don't know music. But at least you realize that Bullet For My Valentine are a bland, derivative, banal, stupid band. And forgive me for asking, but did you just refer to the Mars Volta as 'obscure'? And thanks for the backup, Billy Shears. Cheers to you.

Pretentious Music for Pretentious Musicians
Despite your response being a huge cop out, I will rephrase my previous statement: One would be extremely hard pressed to find "progressive rock" being written these days. There has been little to no progress made in the arena of "rock" in a long, long time, therefore, there is little to no progressive rock being made in this day and age.
My answer wasn't a cop out. It was right. Your response confirmed it: it's a small genre nowadays, but it's still there. Just because it's difficult to find doesn't mean it's not there. -
It's been a week since the last post so... There is no such thing as "Progressive Rock" anymore. Discuss.
There's not much to discuss. That statement is simply false. -
I'm starting to get into this awesome new metalcore band I found, they're called Throwdown. Yeah, so if you like that kind of stuff, I recommend checking them out.
They're not new. They've been around since 1997. And they're as mainstream as Green Day. Also, Porcupine Tree is far, far superior to hack-prog like Dredg or Coheed. You're either listening to one of the few lame songs or you're just listening wrong. More actual good prog rock: King Crimson, Camel, Yes, Jethro Tull.
More Coheed and Cambria! :twitch It's an obession. I bought Good Apollo I'm Burning Star Four: Vol 1, and it is definitly not the best it could be. But welcome home sure as hell makes up for it, and it is now my favorite song this week. I also give my hat off the Suffering. Oh and to make DB happy a bit, I almost decided to buy a dredg CD. I couldn't find Co&Ca at first, but ehn I didn. I might buy a Dredg album soon though.
Listen to good prog instead. Like Porcupine Tree.

This week, I've been completely consumed by Alcest's latest outing, Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde. It's really, really laid back - the most relaxing metal album ever recorded, methinks - and great to just drift off to. Plus, it reminds me of my lady, so that's a plus as well. I've also been listening to lots of Burzum, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Sworn.
A bit of trivia for you folks at home: Not only was "Shoot 'Em Up" the title of the film, but it was also the plot. But seriously, based on the trailers and 30 second clip I saw on Conan, the only way I would ever watch this movie is if I were to somehow passively view it. I don't plan on spending a dime to see it. They're just appealing to the masses with this one.
It seems you've missed the point. Shoot 'Em Up is actually a tounge-in-cheek spoof of all action movies, basically. So no, they're not just appealing to the masses by making a film of nothing but guns and explosions - they're duping people who don't realize it's a joke. The movie is more enjoyable with this in mind.
lol, Jake, u r funni. :) Okay, that was good fun, but now back to the people who can really play guitar. Thanks, I forgot to add him.
Yeah man, Jari can't play at all. How could I forget the Mars Volta?
