Anime The state of anime in the U.S. and abroad
Sangome replied to Dragonboym2's topic in Otaku Central
While I am an ardent dub defender and do agree that fansubbing has wounded the industry rather severely, I don't quite agree with using the scaremongering tactics that Bang Zoom! seems to want to employ. I like to think of fansubs as a sort of necessary evil, especially since American licensors and fansubbers have a closer relationship than one might think. How else would companies know what to bring over here to begin with? By looking at the most popular titles being subbed and downloaded. Once a series becomes licensed, though? Yeah, there's really no excuse. I don't think the industry is really as close to dying out as people seem to be afraid it is. I do think that the big boom of anime is over, though, and it's close to going back to being a niche thing like it was before. I dunno. I'm not exactly sure what really can be done, if anything. I myself hardly watch anime much anymore [the sole series I'm watching right now is FMA: Brotherhood on its AS run], mainly 'cause, well, not much of what's being produced and brought over interests me. But I'm going to stop there before that turns into another tangent entirely. -
Stupid question but it is possible to transfer your LeafGreen and FireRed pokemon directly to the HeartGold and SoulSilver games or is there so other way? I really hate myself for asking this...oh well. What are you going to do.
Yeah, via the Pal Park. You put your FR/LG [or R/S/E] cartridge into the GBA slot of the DS [so if you only have a DSi, you're out of luck], and then catch them in the park [don't worry about not being able to catch them, since the Safari Balls work like Master Balls, they'll always catch it]. In HG/SS, the park is in Fuchsia City. You can only migrate Pokemon from an individual cart once every 24 hours, though [unless they changed that for HG/SS, as I've not used it yet; and no, messing with the DS's internal clock won't work, either, as it detects a time change and forbids you from migrating].

I seem to be one of the few people that loathes the wolf form in TP. I can't really put my finger on why, but I've just...hated it. I guess it's 'cause of the reasons you pointed out; they coulda done so much more with it. Which reminds me, I still need to beat...*googles* Snowpeak Ruins. I guess that's another item on the gaming to-do list for the summer... Anyway, my birthday's come and gone, and with that came a new haul of games. Most of these are going to be played in fairly limited qualities for the next couple of weeks, since finals are coming up soon and I don't want to get too invested in any RPGs until I'm done with school for the year. Without further ado, here's how things are shaping up: Skies of Arcadia Legends: I've had my eye on this game for a long time now, and I've finally managed to obtain a copy. I've heard nothing but praise for this game, and I hope I enjoy it as much as much as I've been told I will. I did play this a couple years ago, albeit briefly, so I don't remember too much. Right now, I just arrived on Shrine Isle, and am probably going to spend a bit levelgrinding, as I do remember this area being a pain. Final Fantasy VI: Managed to snag myself a copy of Final Fantasy Anthology, and this is the reason why [although I do intend to play V down the line]. Not gotten very far in this, either, but I must say that, for an SNES game, it's very visually pleasing. The graphics look great. Definitely looking forward to playing this. Evolution Worlds: Yet another GCN RPG I've had my eye on for several years now [which, like SoA, is a Dreamcast port, interestingly enough; I also discovered both in Nintendo Power once upon a time]. I've not heard raving reviews, but I think I'll like it. The main problem I have so far is that the dungeon I'm in currently has no real variety to it. It's kinda dull. That, and the game starts off really suddenly, launching you into a battle immediately upon starting the game [to the point where I thought my game was defective for a moment]. The character designs are cute, though, and it looks to be fairly light-hearted, something needed every once in awhile in games. Mario Party 4: lol This is the game that's gonna probably see the most play time from me over the next two weeks [as well as TTYD and SPM, more on those in a bit]. I loved this game when I was younger, so I'm happy to finally have it. It'll make a nice reprieve from school, even if it's just bumming around and unlocking more minigames. And now for games I've been playing that I didn't get on my birthday: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: Started my replay of this a couple weeks ago, and it reminds me how awesome this series is. Although my plans were set back when my controller's control stick stopped working properly, so I had to wait to buy a new one [which I have]. I was last on Chapter 6, I think it was, which has been my favorite chapter, mainly 'cause it's a nice breather level with no enemies to fight [yet]. Now I just hope I can beat the game this time, unlike last time... Super Paper Mario: I caved in and decided to do a replay of this game as well, 'cause I love it that much. I've only beaten the first world as of right now, though. Mass Effect: Borrowing this from friends. The combat and customization is taking some getting used to [I don't play a lot of shooters], but the RPG aspect drew me in, and it's not let me down yet. I've yet to leave the Citadel, though being lost in there for three solid days didn't exactly help matters much. >_>;;; So yeah, not gotten very far, but I've liked what I've played so far. I need to get back into Pokemon HeartGold. :/ I've just not felt motivated for it lately.
however some people do drink for temporary relief
I've never understood this, so maybe you can enlighten me [and I'm being completely serious, btw]. Alcohol is a depressant. How exactly is it a relief? I'd be under the impression that'd it make a stressful situation worse. Otherwise, I'm in the same boat as Beth. Though I've never taken a drink of alcohol in my life [nor do I intend to, really], so my opinion isn't really valid. *shrugs*

Well, I celebrated turning a year older yesterday [as it is now the 23rd in my time zone]...and now I feel rather teary-eyed. :(

Nah, I thought the same thing, and I've been watching faithfully. I know a lot of other people thought it was rushed/not as emotional, too. Myself, I find it an even 50/50.
Hughes's actual death was handled far better in this series, where we got to hear his last words, and actually see Envy transform into his "true" self, among other little enhancements. The original just had him dramatically falling to his death in super slow mo.
Now, the
funeral definitely goes to the first series. While I still shed a tear at his wife and daughter, it was far more emotional in the original. [And just to make sure, I loaded up the original funeral scene upon watching Brotherhood's. I started bawling.]
I think another thing that helped the original
death/funeral as a whole was that it occurred much later in the series [episode 25, as opposed to 10], giving us a bit more time to get attached, as well as the fact that it occurred in the last five/ten minutes of the episode [as opposed to right before the friggin commercial break]. That way, it set in as the credits rolled [which was also just a black screen with credits rolling, as opposed to jumping into the current ED], giving everyone the "what just happened?" mindset. Here, it was kinda thrust right back into the action, not giving a lot of time to let it set in.
And finally, let's face it -- it's not nearly as emotional when you know, almost anticipate, that it's going to happen. Most of the people watching this have either seen the first anime, read the manga, or both, not to mention
the pre-existing knowledge of his death is almost starting to rival that of Aerith/Aeris's of FFVII fame [if it hasn't already]
, so many people already know what's going to transpire, which definitely lessens the impact. Don't get me wrong, though, it's still an emotional scene in both series, showing that anyone really can
die
, whether they're a one-episode character, or one that we've had ample amount of time to get to know. Anyway, if memory serves me right, this is where the similarities between the series ends, and the manga's story begins, so I am definitely looking forward to what's in store. It'll be nice to finally get out of FMA: Rehash...

Boo has Bow from Paper Mario in his sig. This makes me irrationally happy.

I both agree and disagree. While it's true that Diamond and Pearl's sales showed the world Pokemon was hardly dead, they're also the least-exciting games in the series, in my opinion. Some of the new Pokemon were cool [I don't care if people complain about the Legendary overload, I love Giratina and was excited when I found out he'd be Platinum's mascot], but, to me, it was just...dull. Team Galactic, while essentially terrorists, didn't intrigue me as much as the previous crime syndicates did [and they had HORRID fashion sense on top of it], nor did the stories of the Legendaries, and Sinnoh itself was extremely boring as a region [which is a big deal for me, since one of my favorite parts of an RPG is a good world with interesting locales and citizens]. Don't get me wrong, D/P/Pt were still good games...but compared to the previous games, they just weren't that interesting in terms of how the world worked.

Hmm, one random thing I noticed. One of the screenshots has a Pokemon Center and Mart merged in the same building. People seem to think that all the Centers and Marts are going to be one in the same now, but what if that's actually just a glimpse of the Elite Four's Center/Mart? That's the only time the Center and Mart are ever found in the same building, so it's possible we're getting an early glimpse at the very end. [Although considering the fact that it's not very regal-looking like they have been lately, that may not be it...although I'm sure these screens are subject to change, so.]

I'm sorry if I'm being a killjoy, but I doubt that's legitimate. I've seen that trick done before -- just whip up a convincing-looking magazine scan, print it out, laminate it, and scan/take a picture of it to make it look like it's from a magazine. An artist on DA did the exact same thing with a fake picture of an alleged Forme of Shaymin's [before the actual Forme was released], and nearly everyone thought it was real [and when I mean "everyone", I mean sites like Serebii and Bulbapedia posted it as news] until she came out and admitted it was a prank. I'm just going to hold out until we get something that's confirmed to be from something like CoroCoro [which is where the initial screenshot scans came from, as well as most other Pokemon info has come from]. Although I was discussing something similar earlier -- I'd really love it if this game had a child/adult option in addition to gender options. Game Freak is well aware of the older demographic that plays these games, especially since a majority of them were children [and thus, the original demographic] when the series was first released. Plus, I'd just feel more involved in the game if the character was around my age instead of...like, ten.

That would be an interesting change of pace from the normal female design if it turned out to be real. Not sure I like it as much as the other possible interpretations so far, though.

I like that one better than the first pic, although I'd probably slap the vest from the first pic onto the second one. One thing that mildly amuses me for whatever reason is the fact that the male PC has his hat on backwards, while the female PC has hers on normal. And that, either way, it looks like they're going for the typical blue for boy and pink for girl scheme...which they kinda did for Lucas and Dawn, though Dawn didn't have as nearly as much pink as these speculated designs do.
-
and I still can't get over her stupid hat.
... I like the hat. D: I don't care if I'm one of the two people in the universe that like it. ;_;
To be fair, according to the CoroCoro scans on Serebii and Bulbapedia, her sprite looks a LOT like that, so even assuming that is a photoshop, it's probably a pretty good representation of what she actually looks like.
Isn't that basically what I said? :animeswea Oh, I just noticed, but the male PC is in those shots, too, just not as close up as the female trainer is.
Sorry, I don't play Pokemon games, but this comment caught me all off guard.
Me too, mainly since the player characters in these games are modeled after the builds of 10/11/12-year-old Japanese kids. :D

Yeah, totally Photoshopped [same pose as Kotone/Lyra, and the outline of the feet and arms look rough, as if it was cut out of something bigger], but that's a good interpretation of what she might look like. I'm excited to see the official Sugimori art, either way.
-
To be fair, it's been quite awhile since we've had a new region to run around in, to the point where some honestly wondered if there'd even be a Gen V. But I digress. I'm excited.

If you've seen my posts in its respective thread, then you'll know that I've been all about Pokemon HeartGold the past few weeks. But I've still found time to play a couple of other games in between. Ace Attorney Investigations -- Finally beat this a couple weeks ago. As for how the final case stacks up to the other final cases of the previous games...eh, I'd rank it pretty low. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's still a good case, but in comparison to the amazing final cases of JfA and T&T, it just felt lacking. The big bad was more annoying than anything, since they absolutely REFUSE to give up, [while that's fairly normal for most baddies in the series, this one takes it to astronomical levels], and...I dunno. Maybe it's cause it was the first game in the AAI spinoffs, I just didn't feel emotionally invested in it all that much. But it's still a fun, solid game, and all AA fans should check it out. Super Paper Mario -- I hadn't really played this since January, so I resumed it a couple of weekends ago. And...oh my gosh. I said that this would probably wind up being one of my favorite Wii titles, and...it definitely is. The story took a few notches in the dark department, but not overbearingly so. It retains a good blend of whimsical Mario humor, while throwing in some unexpected themes. I can't really go into it, 'cause it would ruin the experience, but I ADORE this game. I beat it yesterday, and the ending nearly made me cry. ;_; I never thought I'd get emotional over a Mario game, but SPM proved me wrong. DEAD wrong. And I'm glad. Right now, since the game lets you play the beaten story, I'm just kinda bumming around, since I still don't want to let go. >_> I've bought
Triptron
, but...it's just not the same. ;__________________; Weh...I'm extremely, extremely tempted to start a new file. I might do just that later. But yeah, Super Paper Mario is a must for any Wii owner. It's got good characters, a good story, and it's just downright fun. And speaking of Paper Mario... Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door -- This is the only game in the Paper Mario series I've yet to beat. :/ I've been stuck on the final boss for years. I tried playing a little bit of it earlier, to go level up, and...I don't remember how to do anything! Heck, I barely remember the game to begin with. D: It's like a totally new experience for me. I might just start a new file on this later, too, 'cause I really don't remember how to do squat. ._.; And all this talk makes me want to start a new file on the original game, too. I love the original to bits, and played the heck out of it as a kid. It'll be nice to see how far the series has come. [Speaking of, Nintendo, we need a fourth one, stat.]

I experienced my first legitimate loss last night, against Blue. Though, the only problem was that I didn't have enough Revives, and I guess I was being cocky and thought I didn't need any more. Guess that'll learn me. :/ Oh, and I was on his LAST POKEMON, TOO, which I would have been able to whomp had I not had Linkara the Typhlosion use Blast Burn on the previous Poke, which makes him unable to move for the next round...

In regards to the weird fetishes and sexuality in anime: feel free to correct me if I'm horribly off-track, but isn't sexuality [i.e. expressing oneself sexually, PDAs, etc] really repressed over there? Like, to the point where even kissing in public is frowned upon? And in regards to the giggly schoolgirl stereotype, if the repression is true, maybe the overload of such characters is a result of it? I'm no psychologist, though, so it's only a theory. Again, though, please correct me if I'm wrong, 'cause the last thing I wanna do is spread around an incorrect aspect about a country's culture and people.
