Writing What are you reading?

Finished The Book of Heroes last night. It's pretty great. The ending is a bit unexpected, but it was actually foreshadowed and it was a pretty clever twist, so I can't say it was just out of nowhere. The ending is bittersweet, which is the way like 'em. It's not quite as amazing as Brave Story, but it's a good read, especially if you enjoy Miyuki Miyabe's writing style. The ending was a major sequel hook, though. I hope she writes one, I crave more of this world. -
I forgot to mention here that I finished Brave Story! It was probably one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, actually... I cried so often that I had to stock my room with tissues. However, no matter how hard I cried, I still couldn't put the book down!
Told ya. Yeah, I have to question the judgment of an English teacher who so literally goes against one of the most oft-quoted stock phrases there are that easily (I will say that it's not entirely an invalid point. Phineas and Ferb made a joke about how they put covers on books so you can judge them at a glance in the first place. I laughed). Seems like there should be a little more to it than that, though. Considering how thick that thing is, I would think you could simply close the book and show it to him sideways to convince him that it's not exactly something a preschooler can tackle. Heck, maybe you can lend it to him. I actually let my old music teacher borrow my copy. She was the one who introduced me to the Harry Potter series, so I thought she might enjoy it, and she did. Edit: Oh, and if you want another book by the same author that won't get judged by its cover as quickly, check out The Book of Heroes. I haven't finished it, so I can't render final judgment, but it's got some very interesting mythology behind it and it carries a similar feel to Brave Story. It's not quite as thick, but it's a good read so far nonetheless. -
At the end of the monkey bars, there was no solid ground. There was only an impressively large net made of ropes as thick as my arms. â??Great. Just great,â? I hissed. I made it to the end of the monkey bars and swung off onto the net. The other two colors were also on the ropes. At this point, I finally remembered why I was risking my life. â??Aw, crap! I need this job!â? I gasped. With singed hands, I climbed up the rope and debated with myself. Eventually, I reached a decision. I needed to get rid of at least one of the other competitors. Purple was the closest. I growled a little and sprang forward. Agent Purple was a woman with wavy brown hair and a scowl. I grabbed her ankle and yanked her downward.

A green and white blur stabbed my torso and knocked me to the edge. My head was dangling over open space, fear and surprise making me sick. I saw the blue blur again and knew that Agent Blue was coming to finish me. Without thinking, I thrust my leek at the him. I heard him lose his breath and felt the impact. Lifting my leek up and over me, I catapulted Agent Blue into the swampy water below. I couldnâ??t hear anything. I saw black spreading across my sight. A feeling similar to that of sinking underwater took over. Distantly, I heard my walkie-talkie crackle. â??Chibi M. Aster, youâ??re hired.â? It didnâ??t sound at all like Ms. Pink.
-

[*]First time we've seen Maya in four years. [*]This is awesome.
Anyway, get to speculatin'. Mon Colle Knights made its way across the pond as part of Saban Entertainment's final death throes, and it's basically the very definition of a gag dub. The basic story goes thusly: Mondo Ooya and Rockna Hiiragi are ordinary elementary school students who, in their off-time, travel to the alternate dimension of Mon World to help Rockna's father, Professor Hiiragi, study the local wildlife and defend it from the evil prince Luwig von Monsterstein Eccentro, who wishes to use the monsters of Mon World to take over the world. Yeah, basic, generic and all too cliché. The thing that sets Mon Colle Knights apart from all the other monster collection/battling anime that were all the rage at the time is the fact that this one was pretty clearly meant as a parody. Most of the conventions and settings of shows like it were lampshaded and mocked continuously, and there was always an underlying feel of humor to the whole thing (until around the finale, but even Excel Saga suffered from that). On top of that, Professor Hiiragi's motivations weren't exactly pure. The guy wanted to study Mon World, collect all the data, and then reveal it all to the public and win lots and lots of awards. Sure, this is a little better than Prince Eccentro's plans, but the fact remains that they're both basically there for selfish reasons. There was also an episode where Mondo and Rockna's teacher somehow stumbled into Mon World and was mistaken for a monster, which was just too funny. Apparently the dub created a couple of plot holes, but I have a hard time remembering that thanks to all the fun they obviously had lampooning this show in the voice booth. And it's late Saban, so the dub's voice cast is pretty excellent and includes a lot of the Digimon alumna. Definitely a fun way to waste a kid's time for half an hour on a Saturday morning. -

There might be an alternate style for Merpeople, though. Actually, if she gets the right level of arm strength to hold herself up for a bit, getting slapped with a giant fish tail could hurt a lot on top of being extremely funny. Especially considering the muscular structure of the average fish that size. Holy crap, she could be lethal if trained right. Camie for Straw Hats! -

Gaming Wii controllers suck! Any alternatives?
Other alternatives that you can try [if you haven't already] are either the Wii Classic Controller or a GCN controller. Both work for anything off the Virtual Console, although to what degree varies with the game. For example, the button layout on the GCN controller makes running and jumping in Super Mario RPG at the same time really awkward, while the Classic controller handles it just fine -- whereas in Ocarina of Time, the game is darn near impossible to control with the Classic, but the GCN works relatively well.
And I myself have only ever played Ocarina of Time once without the GCN controller, So I don't even know the difference. But yeah, I personally recommend the GCN controller. If I recall correctly, there's even a new edition of Wavebirds being released that are advertised for use with the Wii (with a sidenote of "also works with Gamecube!"). Other than that, I'm not really sure. I'm assuming you're not really that fond of the Nunchuck attachment for these purposes? I can't really imagine it would improve your situation much more than just using the Wiimote would. Oh, and the Classic controller is set up more or less the same way as an SNES controller. Some people hate that layout, but it's also similar to the DS layout, so if you're okay with that, go for it. As for NES, turning the Wiimote sideways basically results in a slightly fatter version of the same button layout. -
Manga Do shonen manga artist do everything by themselves?
The Spectacular Professor replied to Nemesis89's topic in Otaku Central
Most of them have apprentices/assistants to help with art and backgrounds and such. A lot of these helpers are studying to become mangaka themselves, actually. Their editors also typically get a say in certain plot points from time to time. Fun Fact: Eiichiro Oda, author of the ongoing Shonen manga One Piece, used to apprentice under Nobuhiro Watsuki, who wrote Rurouni Kenshin and Buso Renkin, among other things. Watsuki has included references to Oda's work in some of his stories, like the Straw Hat flag appearing on a cannonball in a later arc of RuroKen, and he's also drawn the main characters of One Piece in his own style. -

Then again, their next location is underwater. Maybe they can take her along and she can learn some way to defend herself?
