Anime Your Own Anime: Sub or Dub?
The Spectacular Professor replied to Solo Tremaine's topic in Otaku Central
I'm seeing a common theme here. People keep saying they would have their anime in English first to basically avoid a crappy dub later. However, under the "guidelines" set by the original question, he said "if you had an unlimited budget." That would likely include dubbing, if you so wished it.
Seems pretty paranoid, too. Ever since I stopped watching Fox Saturday mornings a few years back the only bad dub I've ever experienced was that Spider Riders thing on WB a year or so ago. I'm thinking of tracking down some subs of that one to see if the original's any good. (And, of course, I discovered not too long ago that WB sold out to 4Kid$ a while back, too, so that explains a lot.) -
Now That We've Narrowed Down The Candidates...

Eagle's Nest Airport (Known as "Virginia"... in America) Topped the charts for over 9000 weeks with their third hit single "Freaky Fred," featured on their tenth album, "Carpenter's Square is Dead." In this song, the lead singer, Clyde the paper towel roll, describes various things as "Naughty." An Excerpt: I bought a lemon, peeled the peel, Used it for zest with lots of zeal, Watched a bit of movie reel, It made me feel quite... Naughty. Though the initial reaction was quite positive, the shock factor (derived from the fact that if the song is played backwards at a certain point, it appears to insult the listener's mother) was not enough to build up the sales once the general public realized that the band kind of sucked. Only hurting matters was the concert tour in which Clyde contracted Mononucleosis and was forced to temporarily surrender his position as lead singer to Sanjaya Malakar. The band has recently been considering a reunion tour. By donating to charity and helping those in need, it is possible that America's collective karma will prevent such a terrible thing from happening.
I'm going to agree with the statement that things don't translate well from East to West, but not in the sense that I think dubs are bad. There are cultural differences and distinct characteristics in Japanese literature and media that cannot be translated by western artists (and vice versa). There are exceptions, and there are good "fusions" (i.e. Kill Bill), but for the most part I think it'd be a bad project for an anime company to translate The Great Gatsby, a very American novel, into an anime. I know I sound elitist, but I would absolutely hate to see Slaughterhouse-Five or Adventures of Huckleberry Finn be turned into anime.
I've recently become fine with Anime dubs. If the show has content that would make sense translated, I'm all for it. I wasn't like this a while ago when the only dub I was constantly exposed to was 4Kids One Piece, but I personally think that FUNimetal Alchemist is actually better than the original. They made Tom Sawyer into an Anime, by the way. I pretty much die a little inside every time I come across a clip. I kind of preferred the Howl's Moving Castle anime movie to the book, though...
Most of the kid's shows now are ****ing mind numbing for adults...and hell it was the same 10 years ago.(spongebob anyone?)
Animaniacs Pinky and the Brain Freakazoid Hysteria (Educational, too!) Tiny Toons Batman TAS Looney Toons reruns Etc. BACK ON TOPIC: The Time Machine. I'd love to see how Miyazaki or a similar mind reimagines the fun little critters of the future.
-
That's subjective. I think if I were a seven year old most of the stuff they do work on would suit me just fine. I mean if your a pretentious 7 year old...goddammit you should be listening to classical music and reading novels by now not being overly critical of cartoons.
All I know is when I have kids, they are NOT growing up on stuff I can't stomach watching with them.
-
I disagree with that. 4kids translates kids shows from other countries just fine into kids shows fit for the U.S.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to stab you to death with a spatula over the above utterance. That's not to say that other dubbing companies can't pull stuff off just fine, It's just that they strip away what makes the shows popular, put horrible pun-filled dialogue in and hire voice can't-actors like Jason Griffith and still expect to make money.

Crap. I think I have a virus. My computer keeps freezing and crashing out of the blue. What's more, sometimes it doesn't even start up properly. I'm probably going to take my laptop into Best Buy tomorrow if I can't fix this myself. What I need to know is : How do I go about completely wiping my (Vista Premium) computer and restoring it with the small amount of drivers presented to me on a backup disc at purchase? Please help. I'd rather not spend too much money on something I already have. EDIT: Nevermind. I think it's covered by warranty anyway. In related news, I'm going to be on a downgraded system and may not post very much for the next 2 weeks.
Broadcom do a general bluetooth driver: http://www.broadcom.com/products/bluetooth_update.php however you'll need either bluetooth in your laptop/pc or a usb dongle if you want your pc to communicate with your phone this way. Not a snide remark but Vista may very well be your problem. Whack your phone model number into google and just add "vista bluetooth" to the search, if people have been having problems you'll most likely get a few results detailing why. Alternatively you should be able to copy files across just using USB, it's faster anyway.
Thanks. I've got a fairly new laptop and F6 has a Bluetooth button as a Function alternative, so I assume it's capable, I just don't have the setup application preinstalled. EDIT: I guess not. I suppose I'll just pick up a dongle next time I have money then.
I think (I've only watched it the once) everyone who gets caught in it (aside from Luigi) is slowed down and takes continuous damage, so they're being constantly worn away and unable to effectively retaliate for as long as they're stuck in the nega-bomb, or whatever it is. Something involving E.Gadd's vacuum might have been more appropriate for his character. This makes him look like he practices voodoo or something o_o;
Someone else described it as this: Take all the missed games, all the stolen staring roles, all the times he's played second fiddle to his big brother, and of course all the crap he takes in the RPG's about "Mario and... this other guy!" or "Green Mario" or "Whoigi?" Now gather it all together into a gigantic bomb of negative energy. That's Luigi's final smash.

Anime Your Own Anime: Sub or Dub?
The Spectacular Professor replied to Solo Tremaine's topic in Otaku Central
I suppose it would depend on my target audience and the country I am working in. If it's something planned for American release first, I'd animate for the english speaking audience. It seems a bit silly to make something in Japanese if it's not going to be shown in Japan first. -
Yesterday, I played Sonic Riders Zero Gravity (and it can toggle the voices between English and Japanese!! I'm so happy!) before going to sleep and I must say it pretty great compared to the first Sonic Riders but the trick system is mainly different. I found this game pretty fun.
A Post-Shadow Sonic game where I'm not forced to stomach Jason Griffith and his complete lack of voice talent? Sounds worth a look just for that!

Gaming Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
The Spectacular Professor replied to The Spectacular Professor's topic in Noosphere
I'm not sure I understand the question. Do you mean are there 3 Phoenix Wright games? Because if so, yes. They are: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Justice for All, and Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations. I don't know very much yet about AJ, but I understand it has a lot of cameos so it's probably a good idea to play the other 3 first. -
Alright. I got a phone that's compatible with Bluetooth today. I want to put some mp3's on it, but when I plug it in to my computer via USB, all it does is charge. I thought my laptop was compatible with Bluetooth, but I don't seem to have that driver. So what I need is: 1 Bluetooth driver for Windows Vista Home Premium that allows me to share files between a blackberry cell phone and a computer. And no snide remarks about Vista being my problem. I've already acknowledged that.
As mentioned in the "What Are You Currently Playing" thread, I finally got my copy of the game. It's nothing special so far. I'm about 11-13 hours into the game. Most of my time has been spent on levelling up. My parties level is between 20-22. Just getting to Luin.
Keep playing. The fun hasn't even begun yet.
Also, as I mentioned in that said thread, the battle system is interesting. The linear path fighting style takes a little to get used to because I prefer to run around my enemies instead of jumping over them. I did perform my first Unison attack... Cross Slash or something like that. The techs also take a bit of getting used to, when trying to combine attacks and rack up combos, which I suck at, at the moment. My max combo was 19 hits.
Not much to say. It does take a bit of getting used to. It's pretty much unlike any non-Tales RPG or action game.
Graphically speaking... I have mixed opinions here. I like the background and whatnot, but I hate that chibi(?) look of the characters. That's just never been my thing.
If it's not your thing it's not. I understand your sentiments.
My favorite character so far is Kratos but I use Lloyd more often the Kratos because it seems like Kratos is a bit slower when it comes to defending himself. I mean I was doing 3 hit combos and then pushing the block button right afterwards, but then enemy was still sneaking in an attack before I can fully defend with him, whereas, I can do the same with Lloyd, and block alot quicker, but I'm still getting used to Kratos so "shrugs".
There's really only two characters that are anything alike in battles. When you get one, it should be obvious why. The difference in character styles is part of the replay value. The best idea would be to finish your first play-through with Lloyd, then try the others as you see fit. I main Kratos when playing with friends.
At the moment, I can't stand Collette (sp?) nor Genis. I have issues with children, and Collette is a ditz.
Agreed on Colette. Genis not so much, but again that's your opinion.
I'm not seeing anything funny about the game outside of Raine and Genis moments.
A few of the Z-skits are pretty good. If "Kendama practice" or something similar pops up, I recommend it.
The voice acting's not bad, but it's not good either. It sounds alot like Naruto's dub. (In terms of dullness people lol.)
Crispin Freeman's in there, but it may take a while for you to get to him. Haven't played in a while, but I've basically clocked around 150 hours on this thing. I was totally addicted at one point. Fun game, fun game.

Alright, here's my official last post in this topic. I'm just addressing stuff now. 13th: Stop capitalizing the "b." I'll eat you.:animesigh Oh, and spy46: Let's take a look at these examples of yours:
now to try and give you an example, look at how we make a baby. you have the sperm that in its self could be called a living organism, depending on where you stand on that, same with the womans egg. it enters a new environment, the 2 mix and it changes into some thing else, it adapted and .... well evolved.
No, no, no, NO! This is a terrible example. This is a different type of science altogether. the cells are preprogrammed to do that. there is no adaptation involved. Besides, evolution is supposed to take place over millions of years, not a handful of months. A better example of adaptation would be the human ability to observe and learn.
look at Africans, why do they have black skin? because of the kind of environment that there great, great, great ..... great ancestors lived in. there genetics adapted to the sun, providing them with a darker skin than some one over in the northern hemisphere, more or less.
Ignoring possible racist connotations here, this is called "getting a tan." Not sure how it works itself into your genetic code, but it does.
Uhm, well it actually contradicts your point entirely. See this is what you wrote… You see, I have read similar arguments presenting cases for thermodynamics disproving evolution, mostly on creationwiki, which like all wikepedia articles presents obvious research flaws. However, plenty of scientists and mathematicians like Doc Sengbusch have used delta S equations to disprove those disproving remarks. Again, I am not saying that evolution is the answer just that people shouldn’t attempt to shoot down a theory with faulty or incomplete data, just like people should be skeptical of any theory that includes faulty or incomplete data.
Okay, on a reread, I just noticed that middle paragraph. I'm a bit tired and already bored of this discussion, so I'm going to just take your word there's more to it and try not to pop up in this thread anymore. Like I said, The topic stopped interesting me around the time I decided it's distracting society waaay too much for something that may or may not have happened before we even developed a language. (Not to sound rude, I respect all opinions as well as proof to back it up.) One more thing. Morpheus: That's what Faith is. I don't really want to get into theology or philosophy here, but blind following takes a lot of guts. It may sound stupid, but then again, so did Forrest Gump. Not that it matters, Nerdsy was probably just having a bit of fun.
Oh good god. This is the best the nation could do. Lordy.
Silly Raiha. You say this as if it hasn't been the case for the last 20-some odd years. I kind of like Huckabee at this point, but in a pinch, I'd go with Obama. Despite having the least experience, he has it together more than most of the others. I tend to ignore party lines as I feel they totally skewer many people's views. Wait, where is Ralph Nader? -
Aceburner, you have the wiki part of the 2nd law of thermodynamics down but I think you are interpreting the information in a misleading manner. Since I am not intelligent enough to clearly describe the role of thermodynamics in reproduction and evolution (micro mind you) I’ll simply quote University biology professor Peter v. Sengbusch:
Yes, yes... Yes, very good. Thank you for that. It clears up a lot. Doesn't really go against my point, But I definitely learned something. Like I said, though, with one basic physical law and modern observation contradicting it, it's highly unlikely evolution will ever be fully proven, nor will it ever be disproven as long as other studies suggest it occurs and science doesn't take into account supernatural forces. Therefore, I've given up caring how we got here years ago. What matters now is what we do with ourselves. I say we put this aside for now and go walk a little old lady across the street or discover a cure for cancer. Something good for the outside world, you know?

What is it? Arguing on the internet. Why is it Nifty? Because we're total psychos. No, but seriously, This is actually one of the better debate boards out there. I love a good debate. Although some people aren't good at it, it's really fun to see everyone's views on a subject laid on the table and be surprised at who you agree with. What is it? Otakuboards eBay. Why is it Nifty? Selling off other people's belongings over a fake internet auction is fun. I mean, I got paid in Chalupas for 21st Century Digital Boy! Besides, it was the only thread I've ever been slapped and fed in during the same post (shouldn't have tried to sell Aaryanna [dog.]) Who is it? Desbreko and James Why are they Nifty? Without these guys, no OB. Plain and simple. Adam may still stop by sometimes, but he's not managing the site. These guys keep the site running, fix system hiccups, and are all around great to talk to. James is highly intellectual and a great debater. Des is even more of a gamer than I am and always makes sure to beat some sense into me if I go off on a Smash Bros. tangent. Who? Raiha Why? 1. She's awesome. 2. She's hot. 3. She's standing right next to me holding a firearm. Who: 21st Century Digital Boy Why? Because every site needs an elitist to kick around. Plus his constant name changing makes me wonder what he would do if I created a ghost account named 2009DigitalBoy.
Intelligent design and/or creationism, on the other hand, is untested theory and holds about as much credence as the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. If you want to believe and chalk it up to "a matter of faith," I've got absolutely no problem with it. But to attempt to level science and belief on the basis of "science could be wrong" seems shortsighted to me.
How would one go about testing it, anyway? And don't talk down about the Flying Spaghetti Monster, may his noodly appendage smite you where you stand.

Anyway, I decided long ago that I don't really care how we got here. What matters is what we do now. Now shut up. I'm watching Sesame Street. Dayle is teaching me how to type.
It's passed on through genes and whatnot so it doesn't matter if things 'die'. The strongest survive in their environment; giraffes didn't decide they wanted long necks, the giraffes with longer necks survived because they had an advantaged and passed on that advantage to their offspring.
The giraffe thing was sarcasm. The law I quoted, however, includes genes. They break down, too. When I said everything, I meant it.
oh and please, dont go into the *its not in the bible* bit because ..... thats just a ******** excuse all around, im looking for real reasons and answers.:animesmil
Before I begin, I'm going to point out that this previous statement was completely uncalled for and makes you look like an overwhelming bigot. It's borderline religious bashing, is what it is. Anyway, I personally do not believe in the typical pond scum evolution. I believe in the possibility of creatures learning to adapt to their environment over time, but primal ooze just sounds kind of stupid. Besides, science can disprove evolution just as well as it can prove it. Example? Sure. Wikipedia on the 2nd law of Thermodynamics Pretty fancy language-talkin', huh? Well, here's a paraphrase: Things break down over time. Rock erodes, plants wilt, and organisms die. evolution speaks of things advancing over time, which is contradictory. Also, evolution is based on mutations. However, most mutated animals studied today cannot reproduce. And finally, in the vein of the mutation theory, that would mean that at some point along the line, a Manatee decided a giraffe neck would be useful.:smirk:
