1.
One of two reasons 1-Japan has seen American Movies. I saw an interview with the writer of Gantz and he talked about a couple of American movies like Pulp Fiction, Blade Runner, and Kill Bill. 2-Battle Royale is an ADAPTION not a direct translation. So theres going to be some refrences to American pop culture.
Still, it's odd because American rock music was banned, so you'd think American (violent) movies would be as well? Ah well, it really didn't detract or add from the story. ;)
2.
Battle Roalye is really good, all thought Tokyopop's interpritation is pretty weird at times, like when Kawada hands the main character a gun and says "Don't go all Marvin from Pulp Fiction on me." and of course, the infamous "Go f**k a duck" line.
Yeah, I thought that was odd as well, since in isolated Japan, how did they know about Pulp Fiction? Also, in Pulp Fiction, Marvin never shot anyone he was the one who got shot. ;) The characters used a lot of "ganster slang" throughout it, but it didn't bother me much, since kids usually do. So, the Tokyopop interpretation worked pretty well, considering most 16 year olds don't talk proplerly and would say things to the extent of "Go f**k a duck".
3. Okay, well I can't be the only one who has fallen the ways of Battle Royale. (And, besides being addicted to the movie, the novel...we're here to talk about the manga!) It seems pretty popular, but I've yet to come across any fanart/cospaly/greetings/wallpapers or the like for it on TheOtaku. Could be that because it's only a manga and an anime doesn't exist for it (And, honestly, I hope there never is.) that it's not widespread. Hum. So, for those of you who don't know Battle Royale is about the grim future of a parallel Japan (apparently, what would happen if Japan won WWII). There's a television show called The Program, in which 9th graders are sentenced to a secluded area of the country (such as an island) and are forced to kill each other. They are supplied random weapons, are forced to wear collars that track their heart rate and position, and are shuffled off, expected to take their friend's lives so that they will be allowed to survive. It sounds gruesome, and it is. I mean, it's rated M for a reason. Not for the light hearted. But, in all honesty, it's not about the gore, the bloodshed or the eye-popping action. It takes the human heart and dissects it. Many of the characters are lovable, with heart-wrenching stories and when placed in life or death situations show their true side. I've found myself crying during various volumes of the manga out of my love for the characters and how much it pained me to see them in danger and making decisions that no 15/16 year old should ever be forced to make. Throughout the story, the main character Shuuya, a rock-n-roll obsessed ditz tries to unite the students to find a way to freedom. He tries to cope with the loss of his friends, his hatred for his government all while remaining cheerful for his two friends as they try to find a way to fight back at The Program. Eh, enough of me sounding like a commercial. Does anyone else here share my love? (And yes, my signature is the cover from Battle Royale volume 2.)
4. Well, I've just joined the forums today. *blushes and waves to everyone* I've been a member of TheOtaku for a whlie now. Not doing much, just posting a small bit of art for no good reason and making silly little journal-y posts. (And, I think I found TheOtaku looking for some good wallpapers. I can't remember now, since it was last August.) But, I got kind of bored tonight and decided, HEY! Why not make an OtakuBoards account? You all seem very nice here, and hopefully I'll get to know a few of you and have a good time here. (Though, I feel really overwhelmed. It seems like everyone is so closely-knit, I'm not sure if there'll be room for me to squeeze in! :p)
5. AFI although they've been with me for five years now. I'm sorry, I just absolutely cannot get over the wonder of Narrative Of Soul Against Soul or God Called in Sick Today. And I don't think I ever will. And, as of lately I've been in a huge Streetlight Manifesto mood. I can't help it. Ska music just makes me loose all control and want to dance like a fool. It puts me in such a good mood! But, other than that I've been breaking out The Clash again because...well, who needs a reason! :animesmil
6. In my school we used to have Improv Fridays, where everyone and anyone would come into the theater room to play Props, Questions and whole bunch of other Whose Line games. Needless to say, it was hysterical, rather short lived but generated a lot of memories. I love Whose Line, but I wish there were more episodes. I feel like I've seen the same episodes over and over again. But the best was when Ryan accidently broke the light on Drew's desk with his head. (Does anyone else remember that?) And Colin is my hero! =D
7. Well. I've been a huge AFI fan for 5 years now, and honstly, I love both their newer music and their older music. Whether it be back in the days of Answer All That And Stay Fashionable (or, if you **really** want to go back, back to their Dork EP) to the new Decemberunderground CD. Yeah, their music has become a bit more mainstream. I mean, compare Miss Murder to He Who Laughs Last and you'd think it's a completely different band. (And, in a way, they are a completely different band now. Not that this is a bad thing, the band has matured. And, two members have been replaced to the change of music is to be expected.) But, I'm really satisfyed with their new CD. Davey still hasn't lost his edge, Jade writes some more powerful songs and I'm deeply content with Hunter's bass lines and Adam's (as per usual) kicking drums. Still, I highly recommend that everyone go and listen to so some older AFI music, especially if you enjoy their newer CDs. Go listen to Cereal Wars, a bouncy song about buying cereal or Rolling Balls, possibly the only song ever written about a man turning himself in a woman just so he can be on a bowling team. Love Like Winter strikes my heart chords everytime it comes on though. I got a shirt from their concert with "I Taste of Blood" on the back of it, just out of sheer love of that song. :D Whew, okay, I'm done now. But yesh, *nods* I love their new CD to pieces... Hard to beileve that they've come this far. Who would have known that Ukiah, California could produce this? ;) (And to think, Davey once worked as a pear packer. Haha.)
