What does it mean to be an Otaku?
2010DigitalBoy replied to OtakuSeeker's topic in General Discussion
That's your own definition. Otaku is really just a Japanese word for a fanatic, and although it's used as a derogatory term there, there's a common consensus here that it can be taken with pride. There's also a common consensus that it can mean a fan of practically anything. Just because the word is Japanese doesn't mean it can only include Japanese things. If I say "kannattaja" or "kiihkoilija" (fan and fanatic in Finnish, respectively), I'm not limiting the words to people only interested in Finnish things (cause that would be, you know, silly). Anygays, I believe we western people have much more sense of self-irony than the always-so-bashful Japanese (if you excuse my generalization), so we can use the term more liberately to refer ourselves as ones.
I'm aware of all that. I just like making my opinion sound like fact. Also, 'anygays'? -
Kansas is much better at their song, ol. Mostly cuz the GH2 version's singer sounds like the guy from ****ing Panic!. Oi. Currently listening to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni by Eiko Shimamiya, the disturbing and cool dark techno piece that is the opening theme to the identically titled anime. The video is trippy, though the original opening animation is way cooler.
Lesbian? What? Where? Suddenly my interest in this thread has peaked.
Is it bad that that's exactly what I was thinking?! Also, that chart is stupid. The zone of pain and dating zone should be laced tight. -
Gotta do my favorite anime... Welcome to the NHK - 1 sip whenever purupurupuriru plays - 1 sip whenever Satou smiles maniacally - 1 sip whenever you hear the word 'conspiracy' - 1 sip whenever you hear the words 'Nihon Hikkikomeri Kyoukai' - 2 sips whenever Satou opens his front door. - 1 sip every time you hear the word 'lolicon' - Down the bottle when Satou goes bat-**** insane - 1 sip every time you see the dancing akachan ningen - 2 sips every time Satou talks to his furniture - 2 sips for every inmplied masturbation - 1 sip whenever Yamazaki gets mad - 1 sip every time you hear the word 'galge' - 2 sips when Yamazaki goes bat-**** insane - 1 sip every time someone attempts suicide - 2 sips whenever Yamazaki makes the wrong move with his crush - Down the bottle if Satou gets laid

What does it mean to be an Otaku?
2010DigitalBoy replied to OtakuSeeker's topic in General Discussion
I find it funny that Konata - one of about 5 people on this entire website who I'd consider to be an otaku - disowns the term. I've always hated when people ask this question here cuz you always get some convoluted-*** 'it means your a nerd in your field' like Aceburner's. Luckily there hasn't been much of that yet. An otaku is something that you just are if you are. An otaku is obsessed with anime and manga or the cutures surrounding them. You CANNOT be a science otaku. It DOES NOT work like that. An otaku IS an anime fanatic. Personally I consider 'otaku' to be a race. It's somthing your born as and cannot change. As said by the greatest otaku who ever lived, Madarame, 'you can't just stop being an otaku. It is who you are.' This si true no matter what country you live in. No two otaku are exacly alike, just like not all white people are the same. Otaku is not a mindset so much as a way of life (I think I worded that wrong) anyway, I laugh my *** off every time someone tells me I need a life (several times a day at school). I am an uber otaku. I live and breathe for anime and manga. Anyway, in response to all the talk about me - :p I love you guys! And sunfalle before you decide that I'm not operating the whole site behind the scenes - consider this. Not only do I post everywhere, but most of my friends are moderators, the new guys all love me, and I'm even on good terms with both Desbreko AND Dagger. I might as well just take the place over now XD -
Never heard of them, and if they are dark and whiny bands like Evanescence then I'd rather not. Ahh, good song for the morning: Kansas Carry on Wayward Son
Oh. My. God. You have discgraced your beautiful Norsemanship T_T On a side note, Carry on my Wayward Son is t3h rockz0rz.

Honestly, Jake, I sometimess wonder how you can even enjoy music at all whilst beng so judgemental of it :animesigh though I guess I'm one of the 'pretentious bastards' of the forum myself so I can't whine too much. Anyway, I know I should prolly listen to King Crimson and Yes since hallf my avorite bands cite them as influences, but I've never brought myself to. Just cuz they're old? I dunno. EDIT: You know, sitting here listening to Traversing Through the Arctic Cold we Search for the Spirit of Yuta by Dredg, I can't help but think this is the best damn song ever written. Actually, I take that back since nothing can ever compete with Not Unlike the Waves or Falling Snow by Agalloch...
I don't want any bullcrap for saying this...
37. Fake Wings - .hack//SIGN insert track(link) How can I give you bullcrap for a song that's on my own list as well? lol. Although Simple and Clean is a video game song, I'm sure you won't be the only one to use it >_> much to my chagrin
-
I have to listen to slayer every 3 episodes of any shojo anime.
Best. Habit. Ever. Anyway, I can't watch anime in my underwear. I get 5 minutes in, pause the episode and head to the nearest booru with the main character's* name in mind >_> *the main character in 90% of the shows I watch will be female
-
I use SFS*. i think it's sattellite or something - Verizon, I think? I know we use sattlite for the TV and the router is wireless, though when a storm takes out the satellite (we are VERY stubborn) it doesn't take out the internet. For the most part, pages load instantly and videos load quick as hell. But lately I only really use my brother's mac for internet and it's wirelessly connected to my mom's computer, so sometimes the mac gets a weak signal while the other comp's fine. the only dramatic effect is waiting 5 minutes for a youtube video to load. * Some ****ing ****.
-
I usually will watch it somewhat regularly, other than hiding it when my brothers are around since one of them is biased against it. I also will run many series at once, but I typically am limited to about three episodes per day, just because of the nature of the ISP I use.
Reminds me of when I first got into subs back in like March and was really scared that if my brothers or other family saw me watching like Lucky Star or something they'd freak out or that my brothers would always want to know about what I was watching. So I started waking up at 4:30-5 AM to watch anime before I went to school, and then since my bro was in middle school I'd watch 3 eps in the hour and a half before he got home. Gradually this evolved into me waking up earlier and earlier to have quiet time for anime and going to bed earlier. By the time it was summer, though, I was such an uber-otaku that my brother knew about all the shows I was watching anyway, and I started watching it with him in the room, and later ended up watching some of the same shows I tried to hide with him, even reading them to him! lol The weird schedule stuck in place, though. 3 am is great because not only is there peace an quiet but the internet is dead enough that it can't keep me from watching. If I watch half a show in the AM i'll be addicted enough to stream the rest in the PM. Awesome cycle, even if it's killing me, XD

in that case... ForsakenUndead is cool cuz he's posted in my threads before. I distinctly remember seeing LostProphet before. uuhsirk has a poor sense of direction, lol. Odin has THE coolest name ever. And Lethargy is a pretentious bastard. -
Rev, i swear, there's no saving you... Anyway, listening to Don't Hate Me by Porcupine Tree. It's not bad. The last song wasn't either. I know now to not go for anything with a music video, lol. Still, the music is a smidgeon too... i guess I could say not enough is going on. Well, there's a lot going on musically, but not all at once. I've always disliked the slower parts of post-rock and such genres, aiming for the more epic parts (and wondering 'why can't the whole damn song just be epic?) but this stuff is still pretty good. Good eough that I wouldn't mind listening to it, but not enough to be called a favorite or someting.
-
Oi. What are your favorite anisons and why? Or rather, what makes them so cool? The reason I ask has to do with the recent 100-greatest anison of all time list that the Japanese forum 2channel did which led me to do a top 50 list on another site which is still being judged. Over the last week and a half I've been addicted to anisons so I've created my own master to 50 list (you do NOT have to list this many, lol.) Just to comment on my top few. Firstly, the JAM Project masterpiece SoulTaker. Oh my god. It's filled with power, soul, spirit, and pure, utter win. Honestly, if you can't enjoy it, your brain is deffective. Once you know the lyrics, the whole damn song is a battle cry. I've talked about Odoru Akachan Ningen before in the music thread. The winding guitars and psychopathical lyrics pump pure win into every second. Boy is another awesome anthemic song of epic proportions. The Light Before we Land is addictive and will trap your mind in an ever-perpetuating cycle of listening. It's calm, soothing, and yet as epic as any. Speaking of epic that's were God Knows and Gotta Knock a Little Harder come in. God Knows being the shorter, more energetic song with moving lyrics and vocals. GKaLH is the soulful stairway-esque epic masterpiece sent from the hell of the blues itself. 1. SoulTaker - SoulTaker OP (link) (Music video) 2.
Sigh. . . . It's over. I watched ep24 last night. I had put it off for a bit because I knew it would be awesome yet sad at the same time, and it was. The show really went out with a bang and the episode was filled with everything that makes Lucky Star what it is. I thought the way it ended was perfect, in fact. But, you know, it's over; there's no more, and this makes me sad. I've decided, though, that once EnA finishes their releases (high quality h.246 encoding zomgyes) I'm going to do a Lucky Star marathon. All 24 episodes?nine hours of Lucky Star?in one day. It's going to be crazy, and awesome, and crazy awesome.
I might have to try that myself. Tell me when you're going to do it so we can on the same day :p Anyway, I've said this already to a few people, but I honestly think it's foolish to think that there won't be a season 2 of LS.

Pretentious Music for Pretentious Musicians
Despite your response being a huge cop out, I will rephrase my previous statement: One would be extremely hard pressed to find "progressive rock" being written these days. There has been little to no progress made in the arena of "rock" in a long, long time, therefore, there is little to no progressive rock being made in this day and age.
With rock still existing, there is no reason for anything to be called 'post-rock'. I watch anime in every ounce of time that I am not on TV or posting in a forum (or entertaining my brothers). I frequently complete 12-13 epsidoe series in a day or 2 or go for a 24-26 in a week's time. I watch a hundred shows at once, but usually focus on a particular one till completion if I find it addicting.

Title: Sisters of Wellber Genre: Fantasy Action For Fans of: El Cazador de la Bruja, Noir, Madlax Episodes: 13 Availability: Subs only Unlike many of the aime threads I do, this is actually a show I'm only just starting, and it ended a couple months ago. So why am I not waiting till I'm done? Because for some reason, pretty much NO ONE has seen this - at least that's how it seems to be over here on the US side. Ssiters of Wellber starts off with two things going on - the first being that a female theif has been looting the capital city for the past few days and eluding capture rather nicely. Meanwhile, in the palace, the princess is receiving a visit from a prince from another kingdom who she is to mary soon. Well, said theif, having seen a monster treasure in the palace the night before, goes to loot the place and stumbles upon the princess and prince standing nude together... and the princess is covered in blood! The prince's body falls to the ground to reveal a dagger in the princess' hands! Guardss storm te room and the theif, not wanting to be suspected of causing this, makes a quick escape with the princess. The next day, after spending the night at the theif's house, the princess is attacked by soldiers. One of her loyal men tells her that the king has been forced to but a 1,000,000 cur bounty on her head because if she is not executed, the country where the prince comes from will encite war and wipe out the nation. Her guard tells her to escape to a southern nation, and the theif, having a need to go there herself, gets the princess to hire her as a bodyguard. After a narrow escape thanks to the help of... a tank?!... the team's adventure begins. After 3 episodes of this show, it mostly reminds me of Bee Train's girls-with-guns trilogy, hence all the shows lsted above. though since this show is half of any of their length, I'm sure it takes a different direction than they do. The feel is very Final-Fantasy to me. It's not anywhere near as steam-punk as an FF game, but it's the kind of atmosphere. the highlights of the show are the great animation (thank you Production I.G.) but more entirely the excellent music. This is definitely an OST I want to look into. Note: It has come to my attention that only 8 eps of this have been subbed. However, the last 2 were recent and rather close together, so I'm confident it will be done before too long.
So what is Starship Operator about? is it one of the best anime I can watch? So please explain the detail for me.
Well, it's about a group of university students who are onboard a battleship coming home from it's maiden voyage. It's almost gotten home whe they find out that the galactic force known as the kingdom has just taken over their planet. Since the planet's new prime minister believes in peace he surrenders and tells everyone on the ship to come back to the planet in shuttles. The officers all leave immediately, but the cadets decide rather than returning home to try and buy the ship from whoever the planet is fixing to sell it to and start a one-ship (30 cadets) rebellion against the empire. The question is, of course, how they'll aford supplies and stuff ad buy the ship. So the guy who came up with the plan decides to use the Galaxy Network - a news broadcast channel, as sponsors in return for filming their escapades. The series is usually serious and tense with some highly tactical military battles. It's not about being flashy, but about being smart. It's also really, really fun for the most part.

Honestly, Prem, just cuz you like IKSOSE:3 don't think your music taste will parallel mine. Dredg is a whole different experience from CoCa. They may be (among) my favorite band, but I'd never consider them appropriate for a ore mainstream audience. Coheed can be a gateway into prog, I guess, but I have no idea if you'll just suddenly enjoy obscure music because of it (it helped for me, but then again I loved the mars volta already before then) Also, Jake, listening to Porcupine Tree right now, not hearing anything special >_> EDIT: As a matter of fact, listened to like 4 songs, and was insanely bored. Decided to go listen to The Sound of Animals Fighting instead.
