Anime What is the most popular anime now?
I agree, Rave Master was much more enjoyable. Mostly becasue of the funny characters. But the story was okay. Too bad toonami stopped showing it, especially during the good part of the series, after he defeated that huge guy in black.
The American TV version of Rave Master; like Shaman King, One Piece, or Yu-Gi-Oh; should never be taken seriously >_> No blood, stupid edits, etc. etc. -
:\ better than Naruto anyday.
That can be said about a great many things. being better than Naruto doesn't make it good, though. Rave Master is better than Naruto, but that doesn't mean I still read it. (compared because they were my first 2 favorite manga.) -
Darker Than Black "Wow. I never would have thought I'd see this in my life." Joe stared dumbfounded at the now-changed Aeru who wore the same dress as Neviril, in perfect contrast to her regular attire. "I think it looks nice on her," Neviril said without thinking. Realizing what she'd said, she put her hand over her mouth in surprise. "You sure are weird," Joe replied, monotone. "I like it myself," Aeru chimed with a bright smile. "Yeah, well you're weird, too. Being so calm about this-" "Neviril," Aeru cut him off, "this mansion belongs to The Count, doesn't it?" "Ah... y-you already knew?" Wait, so the shinigami already know about us?! Neviril was dumbfounded. "Can you take me to speak with him?" After a moment of panicky unsure thoughts, Neviril agreed to lead the young shinigami to the throne room of the count. After the ascent of a second flight of stairs to the building's third floor, the trio stood before a massive double-door which was gaudily decorated. "Talk about overdoing it..." Joe muttered under his breath. Neviril stepped forward and gave the door a few knocks. "Come in..." All on it's own, the doors slowly began to open inward. The inside of the room was a complete void of darkness - a synthetic darkness deeper than any natural dark. A human would be driven insane at the mere sight of it. The eyes of a vampire or spiritual being, though, pierced it with ease. Laying with one knee bent on his extravagant bed; his long hair falling about his face which wore a short, pointed beard; was the count. "Aeru..." his voice was deep and charismatic. "The Count. We meet again." Aeru smirked as a memory flashed in her mind following her words. She began to stride forward into the massive room. "Indeed we do. I'm impressed you managed to break from the seal placed on you so easily. I didn't think you'd be able to concentrate over your raging emotions." "How long has it been now, Count? You no longer know me. Your expectations ought to be off a little, don't you think?" Neviril and Joe both quickly realized how out of place they felt in this conversation as they stopped some distance behind Aeru. "You are correct. I should have prepared better for using you in my plans, but honestly, I doubt I could have predicted you'd change so much in such a short time." By now, Aeru was standing at the foot of The Count's bed. With a sudden flash of movement she leapt from the floor into the air above The Count, her scythe already materialized into attack position. She immediately hacked it through the air, barely missing as the count rolled out of the way. The blade cut through the pillow and deep into the mattress. "Ah!" Joe and Neviril both cried in shock. The Count landed gracefully on the floor as feathers scattered into the air, but there was little time for admiration. As soon as she landed, Aeru shot toward the older vampire once more, carving the air before her viciously. Once more, it was a miss, and the Count easily dodged the next few attacks as if he were using no effort. Aeru wore a look of absolute hatred on her face tat Joe had never seen before. It terrified him. What on earth is the relationship between these two?! Aeru's scythe was headed straight for The Count's neck when suddenly he disappeared, reappearing instantly behind her with his arm wrapped around her neck. "Not bad..." "BASTARD!" She spat. Aeru threw the count off and twirled in a full circle with the scythe outstretched. The Count easily hopped onto the blade of the scythe and jumped backward through the air to the other side of the room, past the bed. "Maybe I didn't underestimate your hatred after all. I can't have you attacking me and messing up my room like this, though. I don't intend to kill you, so I'd prefer you simply submit and spare us both the triviality of fighting." <"URUSAI!!!"> Aeru once more took to the air in jumping. While she flew, a snap of The Count's fingers shot through the air. "Neviril!" The vampire girl snapped out of her stupor and recognized that The Count was being attacked. With lightning speed, she dashed in front of him to receive the blow. Aeru's blade froze just before cleaving into Neviril's shoulder while she landed. "MOVE!" Aeru demanded. "I can't! I am The Count's servant. It is my duty to protect him!" She cried, waveringly. Behind her, The Count smiled devilishly. Aeru growled. "What will you do, shinigami?" for a moment, Aeru stared at him with eyes full of hatred while he grinned away. With a yell, she threw her scythe across the room, letting it slide across the floor and crash against the wall, de-materializing. She stormed out of the room, furious, with Joe following closely. Neviril stared out the door with fright. The Count's hand came to rest on her shoulder. "Don't worry..." he assured her, "I don't intend to hurt your new friend. Why don't you go see if she's okay?" After a moment's hesitation, Neviril ran out of the room as well. Behind her, the giant doors closed on their own. The count turned to face his ruined bed. He smiled wickedly. "Hehehehehe... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!"

Since we seem to be in favor of having a thread for the directory, I went ahead and created a thread for the Anime Lounge, since the old one was too restricting. I need to check out what the others look like before deciding if they should be redone as well. Discuss Shinigami Dance: Playground of Deities
2010DigitalBoy replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Theater
Yo. Will (finally) be posting sometime AM. Sorry for keeping you all waiting so very long, but Ive got a bucket of ideas for this. EDIT: Post up! Also, to the poster who shows up first at the Count's mansion - you're in charge of naming the third 'volume' (or whatever you decide to call it)/ -
Oi. This is now the official and apparently final Favorites thread, soon to be easily accessible through the Anime Lounge directory. I stress that you take my example to heart when you write your favorites out. Top Tier 1. NHK ni Youkuso (Welcome to the NHK) - Utterly dark humor spliced with harsh reality and drama that really accentuates the horrors of society and the brutality of social awkwardness. For someone like me, it?s not only a bit reflective, but almost an outlook onto my future. The show creates the perfect atmosphere of madness to the point that it?s like watching Hell itself. From the freaky and trippy imagery to the winding music and even Satou?s voice actor (this guy needs ore roles!) everything fits utterly perfectly. The entire show carries the feeling of total hopelessness that sinks deep into your soul. 2. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) - What?s there not to love about Haruhi? First of all, it?s absolutely hilarious. Second, it?s a damn good time no matter how many times you watch it and so strange that it?s hard to compare to anything out there. The show has some really deep plots that you couldn?t possibly see coming around the show?s utterly lightheartedness. Haruhi knows when to take itself seriously and when to be funny and alternates between them nearly flawlessly to create some really epic moments. I think the last episode in broadcast order makes for one of my favorite anime endings of all time. Lets not forget the memorable awesomeness that is episode 12 either. The best part of Haruhi, though, is the characters. Kyon is my favorite male lead or narrator ever, and the whole cast is memorable (I actually remember their names!) and fun. 3. Shin Seiki Evangelion (Neon Genesis Evangelion) - It?s been a very long time since I watched this show, which makes me question my own opinion of it, but from what I recall it was brilliant. An excellent blend of drama and action with the perfect dosage of psychology. End of Evangelion was pure excellency. 4. Serial Experiments Lain - In some ways, I feel like Lain is a little forced, because it almost exists just to show you it?s world-view, but at least the show is consistent and focused. From the beginning you know you?re dealing with a psychological journey that transcends just what you see and hear and forces you to honestly think if you want to understand. I think that episode 5 exists just to show you this. I understood most of what I saw in Lain the first time around, but I didn?t figure this one out until I read something about it in the art book which finally explained it. What I find interesting about Lain is that it is dark and deep without being a thriller in any way. The show doesn?t ever try to be cheap or thrill you - as I said, it?s very concentrated. Aside from the well-portrayed themes and way of making you think, Lain also tells a great story. Lain is one of the most human characters I?ve ever seen in anime, and she is so pathetic and pitiable that it?s sad just to watch her even from the very beginning, and her sorrows only grow and grow. It?s rare that I?ve ever cared for a character as much as Lain. I?d have to say this series has my favorite ending of all time, just beating the last 2 episodes of eva (but not EOE) 5. Mai-HiME - Easily one of the most impressive anime I?ve seen and my favorite since Welcome to the NHK. I?d lie to start by saying that, pacing wise, this anime was absolutely superb. In most anime there might be a certain part of the show that was slower or faster that didn?t feel right with the rest, or just an episode or two that were out of place or uninteresting. Mai-HiME never had any parts like that. 100% of the way through it was an awesome, eventful, fun, crazy thrill ride which could compete with s-CRY-ed in the world of over-the-top action/drama that leaves ou glued to the seat and begging for more. My favorite part of this show was most definitely it?s share of ?holy ****ing ****!? surprises. Starting from episode 8(?) and the instant realization that this show isn?t playing around, the action was constantly building and never ceased to amaze or become monotonous. Surprises waited around every corner and even things that you kinda see coming are twisted into something crazy and thrown back at you. High Tier 1. Kino no Tabi (Kino?s Journey) - this is an anime for relaxation, reflection, and deep thoughts. This is the kind of anime that makes you think, but keeps you entertained without overdoing it. I find it to be increadibly humble at all times and has an air of realism that you just don?t see in dramatic stories. Kino is a great character, and her dynamic with Hermes is always fun. This is one of the rare shows that plays well on all sides of the field. The calmer episodes are all done well, and the fighting scenes are equally great. Almost every episode catches you off-guard at some point with some kind of unexpected twist - some more expected, but others that make you full of shock and surprise. The last 2 episodes are some of the most heavy-hitting I think I?ve ever seen. 2. FLCL - Over the top, flashy, full of references and wacky comedy and absurdity? but simultaneously telling a coming-of-age tale of a young boy and his growth as well as an interesting world-view that keeps the scholars dancing. The ultimate soundtrack and the coolest visual effects, all packed into under 3 hours of high-octane madness. What?s not to love? 3. Shoujo Kakumei Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena) - The things that will stick with me after watching Utena are the characters, the imagery, and the ending. And, of course, that everyone ****s everyone in this show. Seriously. The chicks did the dudes, the chicks did the chicks, the dudes did the dudes. I?ve never seen such a hive of STDs in my life XD Nevertheless, the show had some great characters, detestable as many of them were. I find it funny that I ended up feeling a little sorry for Saionji and Nanami, despite both being such utter pricks at times. In the end, there wasn?t really any character who I absolutel hated? okay, I hate Akio, but then again, he?s the bad guy, you?re supposed to. The show showed all the characters in their serious and goofy moments, so that ou really got to know all of them in every way. I like that each of their individual stories is left open almost entirely, leaving you only with the knowlege of how the characters have grown. In that way, I feel there was a spectacular effort in focusing completely on the characters and not the story itself. What amazes me about Utena is that it can be cheesy, totally formulaic, repeat itself, waste time, and do it all with such utter skill and awesome that I don?t even mind it. That?s what makes the show endearing - while you know what to expect from each episode in that season (a bunch of duels and random Nanami adventures) you still want to see how they?re going to portray it. I also think that the formulaic nature of the series is what strengthened the final saga in a lot of ways. At that point, the plot is all coming together, but it keeps you in total suspense and only reveals it?s hand at the very last minute. There was really no way to predict how it was going to end. And when it did end, it did so with the sort of epic flair I was hoping for. The ultimate sacrifice of Utena and everything about the final stage, namely when the swords came down and destroyed the entire structure was simply awesome. It even had a nice conclusive aftermath that leaves enough to the imagination but still tells you what?s happening. 4. Kanon 2006 - It?s hard for me to talk about this show, since the best impressions are ones first given, and it? been a while since I saw it. Just go here and read the individual parts. Lower Tier 1. Air TV - I found this series to be immensely strange and intriguing. I didn?t really like how each character had their own arc and then basically never appeared again, but it gave them time to flesh out each character individually (curse of a game with multiple endings >_

Anime: Mai-HiME For Fans Of: s-CRY-ed Episodes: 26 Related Works: My-Otome, My-Zhime Wow! Looks like we don't actually have a Mai-HiME thread on OB! We have an otome one, but that's something wholly different... anywho... WARNING: IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN ALL OF MAI-HIME DO NOT HIGHLIGHT ANY SPOILERS. YOU WIL RUIN THE SERIES FOR YOURSELF. After ep 2 Anywho, started watching Mai-HiME because of a lot of hype and my curiosity. After 2 eps I can?t decide what the hell to make of it. The action scene in the first ep was pretty kickass. There?s so many characters that for every one I hate there?s one I know I?ll like (whilst Mai herself has simultaneously become my favorite character in he show and one of the most annoying besides that ungodly silver-haired guy. i hope he dies >_>). I hope that there are many more fanservice moments with her and that strange feral girl After ep 6 After 6 episodes of Kujian Mai-HiME I find the show addicting and fun and hilariously cool. And plus, Mai is an awesome lead. After ep 10 Holy ****. I was just joking when I said that Mai-HiME was secretly Kujian, but after episode 10, I?m not so sure anymore. I can hardly even believe that episode was real XD even so it was so hilariously cheesy that it was brilliant. Also, Akira-kun is probably now my favorite character. Add onto that the Nordic terms springing up in eps 8 and 10 and this is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. After ep 19 episode 19, holy **** **** balls! I knew this shows had gotten crazy and a little sad, but this was downright depressing. Seriously, I can?t see very many happy endings arising from all this, period. It took a while, but I finally completed Mai-HiME - easily one of the most impressive anime I?ve seen and my favorite since Welcome to the NHK. My favorite part of this show was most definitely it?s share of ?holy ****ing ****!? surprises. Starting from the moment
the first Child is slaughtered
and the instant realization that this show isn?t playing around, the action was constantly building and never ceased to amaze or become monotonous. Surprises waited around every corner and even things that you kinda see coming are twisted into something crazy and thrown back at you. Adding onto that, I was completely addicted to this series throughout, but it was in episode 19 and onward that it officially grabbed the rank of one of my alltime favorties. At that point, I think I had fallen in love with every single member of the entire cast. There are probably no other shows I can say that about - I?ve always managed to hate someone. Even in Eva I hated Asuka, in Gankutsuou I hate that blonde guy, in NHK i hate the class rep girl, but I cannot hate anyone in Mai-HiME. So naturally, watching
each of them get thoroughly crushed both physically and emotionally [/spoile]rwas a moving experience. Not to mention absolutely awesome.
Episode 19 laid the seeds of dispair, and boy did it grow rapidly. Killing 2 main characters in episode 20 took me by surprise (even if Mikoto is already back by 21, but I didn?t watch it till 2 days later, so I was still freaking out, lol).
From there on out the whole show was pure epic and win. Amazing battles, great drama, just all-around kickassery. And oh! Let?s not forget
yuri rape, masochist nun, psycho-12-year-old-whore, explosing schools, and the reverse-trap.
Might I also mention that said
yuri-rapist and victim
are my official favorite yuri couple ever. I think it?s important now that I tackle the ending. I?ve heard a lot of bad things about the ending of Mai-HiME, so I was braced for the worst. Honestly, though, by the time I had pressed play on episode 26 I already knew i would love the ending. With a show like this that I loved that much, nothing could **** it up, period. And, of course, I loved it. I think it?s rather obvious, though, why some people hated it -
extreme case of deus-ex machina. Seeing the reception of Kanon?s ending, it?s no surprise.
I, for one, adored it. More
happy
endings like this, plz! Also, since the sub I watched was nice enough to leave notes afterward about the entire mythological backgrounds of all the Childs, I was extremely impressed at the mythological undertones. I had only really caught the nordic ones since I?m a huge Norse mythology fan, but all of them were great. Anywho, even though I?ve been advised against i, I?m gunna check out Mai-Otome just in case. Chow!

Anime What is the most popular anime now?
2010DigitalBoy replied to Vigilance's topic in Otaku Central
Pretty much every anime fan I have met that goes to cons was under 16. So from my life experience younger people go to cons. But I don't go to cons myself so I am not really speaking from experience.(I'd rather be chillin at my house or hangin with my friends at the movies or something instead of going to a con...all the weird people scare me).
>_> it's a mixed crowd, really. Best reason there's more Bleach cosplay than Narutard? Bleach cosplay = black gi, fake hair. Naruto requires you to build an entire outfit. -
The only problem I can see with this is that peoples' favorite things can change quite often. I know I've had a different favorite band every year since the sixth grade (even though AFI has always been a favorite and THE favorite for two years now, :P), and I do change a lot outside of my entertainment interests. I don't know about anyone else, but if I go back and read a post about something that is no longer my favorite, then I feel compelled to update it. Some people change a lot more often than every year, though, so a sticky like that would rack up lots of posts very quickly.
that's the whole reason I was requesting a sticky. Personally, my favorites change almost monthly. i usually wait a couple months before doing so, but I very frequently create new favorites threads in hope that others are evolving at the same rate. A faovorites thread would stay right at the top and be easily accessible and constant. If you want to make changes to your list, you can simply edit your original post and not have to worry about not boosting the thread up the page. Also, isn't a thread with a lot of posts, y'know, a good thing?
-
I can see adding generic favorite threads to the directories and just having a single thread for each. Stuff like, "What's your favorite villain?" or "What's your favorite game?" Ones that are always the same no matter how many times they're recreated. But I don't think we should sticky the individual threads. We already tend to have a few stickies in each forum and we don't want the list to get too long. Given all the different types of favorite threads that can crop up, it could easily start choking out the unstickied threads.
>_> that's not what I meant by 'favorites'. In anime lounge, a 'What is your Favorite Anime' sticky. In manga 'What is your Favorite Manga?'. In MMTV 'What is your favorite band/movie/TVshow'. In hardwired 'What is your favorite video game?'. In OB Anthology 'What is your favorite book?' that's all.
I think we discussed this a while back in response to all the recommendation threads popping up. But in the end I'm sure we decided not to do it. It's too easy to keep finding things you'd like to have as a sticky thread. Plus favorites and recommended threads are often spammy and full of lists that have to be deleted out of the thread. So in the end adding it to the directory seems like the best solution. Then new threads that pop up on the subject can simply be merged into the main thread.
Oi. I was asking, though, because I was about too create a new favorites thread but wasn't sure if I was supposed to ressurect the last one or what (since it was technically a top 5 and thus restricted a lot of people) so I made the request.
ALL of the filler? I no longer question your sanity. I know you lack it entirely.
O_o No, I didn't literally mean all the filler. I'm not that crazy, lol. I'm talking about the stupid filler eps that appear randomely in the earlier seasons (AKA I've not seen past what they've played on CN) -
I'm not sure if stickying the threads would work but since most forums have a thread directory, I don't see why we can't add a favorites thread section to the directory and list them there. Anime What is the most popular anime now?
2010DigitalBoy replied to Vigilance's topic in Otaku Central

What about people who read it? :p
Depends. Back when I first discovered manga (AKa when Shonen Jump first came out in the US) I got way into Naruto and collected them till like 2 years ago (I had the first 11 - now donated to my younger brother). Reading it makes you a lot cooler than the people who watch it, but if you can stomach it past about tankouban 10 then you either have an iron gut or bad taste. That or you just don't know better like most Narutards. -
I am requesting favorites stickies for the entertainment forums and the OB Anthology. I have a list of reasons. 1. No repeat threads every other week. Just one easy to manage thread. Even when these threads are done right and have up to 5-6 pages of great replies, they also get spammed a lot so I imagine it's a pain de-spamming every single one. 2. Easier to keep track of. No having to worry abot when it's appropriate to create a new one cuz there will always be one definite one. 3. Easy to find. Personally, I find myself hunting these threads all the time to look at people's favorites lists. On other sites they are usually stickies and thus much easier to find. Not to mention you won't have to necro the old thread just to add on your new favorite show. It doesn't even have to be a new thread is you don't want - we can sticky the most recent favorites threads, though a fresh one would be nice, too, since if anyone is like me they've been hoarding additions.
Naruto is much bigger and hotter than Bleach, if we were to talk about raw statistics. However, the percentage of coherent fans is significantly bigger for the Bleach circle. Figure, 10 out of a 1000 Naruto fans are not giddy, screaming kids, so that's 1%, and 10 out of 100 Bleach fans will survive an encounter with a sane person, and that's 10%. Pick your friends wisely, although I do prefer Naruto myself. O_O
I don't fully trust anyone who watches Naruto O_o Naruto is by far the most popular one currently, might even be bigger than DBZ at this point. Bleach is also pretty damn popular, but not quite like Narutard. If you ignore the [strike]stupid people, Narutards[/strike] mainstream anime fans, though, and delve into the inner circle, I'd say the most popular anime right now is by far The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, thought the most popular airing currently is Lucky Star. Anime What are You Watching/Reading Now?
2010DigitalBoy replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Otaku Central
:animesigh I get the feeling your constant rambling about it will have me on it eventually. Maybe sometime after I'm done being addicted to Mai-HiME. This show is so awesomely cheesy and otaku yet with the ability to pull of drama and comedy well. If you ever watched the Kujibiki Unbalance OVA and wished it was a full series, just go watch Mai-HiME XD (it's not really nearly as bad as Kujian, though.) The battles, when they happen, are cool as hell, there's fun characterrs (and an enormous cast) and the plot moves quickly at pretty much all times (helps that it has such a huge cast). It's positively addicting. (I'm on ep. 11) -
