2. Prem should get Ashes Against the Grain. My decree. The other too are too far-out for him to wrap his mind around yet. As for OberOn's opinion that Coheed 'tries to sound like very other underground prog-rock band'... no. I don't understand why two bands can't be similar without one 'trying to be the other'. Especially since dredg, coheed, and TMV all came about around the same time, all three have a different sound on each of their albums, and share enough similarities that if you like one, you should try out the others. It sounds to me like you just like dredg more than Coheed and therefor try to degrade them or just think of them lesser. Personally, I like Coheed about the same as dredg, if not more, and I think they deserve credit for what they do and shouldn't be treated like some little rip-off band. Also, I just picked up El Cielo, which is pretty damn cool so far. Lot of surprises on there which is nice.
3. It's my birthday tommorrow (today: festivities). None of your birthdays are special enough to warrant a thread, but half because I want to show off and half because I'm conceited, my birthday brings about discussion! I've got a ton of questions, too, to keep things interesting. 1. Do you have any birthday traditions? 2. What was your best birthday present ever? (if you say 'life' I'll slap you!) 3. Has knowing your age ever given you a certain midnset? Did you ever feel like you'd passed a certain rung or like you had to change? 4. What was your favorite birthday? 1. My mom is a pro cake maker, and she makes whatever design I concoct into a cake. Last year I had Boogiepop, the year before a Prinny from Disgaea, and right now my mom's making one fromn Zetsubou-sensei. The biggest, best one was a Charizard cake I had for my 7th birthday where it was the size of the table, 4 layers high, made of 7 cake mixes, and beautiful. Other than that, I never want to do anything, so for the past few years it's just been hangin out at home or whatever. 2. >_> Could never decide on one... 3. I've personally never really felt different about it. My parents are all like 'ZOMG YOUR SIXTEEN!!!!!!' and I can't bring myself to care. I'm sure I'll be doing the same crap I'm doing now. The only time it felt different was when I turned 13. The bridge from 'kid' to 'teenager' is almost a forced stigma. Society has a whole different judgement on you then. 4. We're just going to say it's this birthday >_> There was a year I got a computer, but since it was damaged beyond repair within 2 years, I can't speak for it XD I'm saying this one, though, because I want to brag about all the crap I got... ~Mushishi vol. 1 DVD +artbox (best artbox ever) ~Mushishi vol. 2 Manga ~Gunslinger Girl vol. 1 DVD +artbox ~Genshiken DVD Complete Collection ~Coyote Ragtime Show vol. 1 DVD ~PaniPoni Dash vol. 1 DVD ~Eva 01 figurine ~Eva 02 figurine ~Serial Experiments Lain hardback artbook ~ Dredg CD El Cielo And I still have cash left! A great haul by any standards. Anyway, since my birthdays are rather lax, I turn the conversation to you. I know some of you have some interesting birthdays. I think I created this same thread on my last birthday too XD
4. I would be melted. ...>_> *hates chocolate*
5.
Ah fair enough, I could tell the "Annoying Catchphrase" one was Alan's because he was the only one to ever object to it's usage, and couldn't even get when it was used right. :animesmil
Try again pal.
6. Lolz, funny you should mention this show. I just recently watched Shinigami no Ballad and then someone told me how SnB had replaced this show in it's time slot since they were both only six episodes long. Since I heard that this show is very tonally similar to SnB, I definitely reccommend Shinigami no Ballad to both of you. Especially since my rp your both in is based on it XD I will definitely watch this show, since I already thought I might, and this coincidence has solidified it. Plus I need an excuse to look at those spoilers >_>
7.
Well as expected DB my preferred method of communication is face to face. .
I was actually thinking of you when I wrote that, lol. I agree about texting being the most worthless, stupid, rediculous, ignorant, tedius, horrible, despicable, appalling, derogatory, sick act man can perform. Every time I see some bastard texting under their desk at school I want to cram their phone in their mouth and choke them to death with it. Even emergency situations are no excuse. If I was crushed by a boulder and could move but couldn't see my right arm nor raise it to my head, and the only way I could get help were to grab the phone from my pocket and type HELP! into it based on my knowledge of where the letters are, then maybe it'd be worth it. ...Nevermind. I'd let myself die. I hate texting THAT much.
8. Ah, good thing you brought this up, since I just got done watching ep 3 both with bro and with pauses, and I don't think I need to tell you how I feel about it, XD As you can see by my current sig and avi I am simply obsessed with this show and it is currently my favorite show. ever. 3 was wonderful in every aspect of course. What makes this show truly amazing is that when I watch each episode twice I am almost watching two different shows. One time, I am watching the most well-written dark comedy I've ever experienced, and the next I am watching the ultimate parody-comedy. The DN reference, Gurren-Lagann references, the freaking FUSION DANCE!!!! All brilliant on every level. I cannot sing my praise high enough - I want to marry Akiyuki Shinbo XDDDD EDIT: Copied and pasted from Megatokyo... with one sentence removed for being a little too much for lil old OB XD So, I hadn't realized there was an ep 4 sub, so I watched it. And... that was the greatest episode of any show ever. I don't think I've laughed that hard at an anime in a long time, nor have I been so disturbed by my own laughter since NHK. I sound like a broken record praising this show, but I can't help it. Just watching this show is like having sex.... or at least, watching it makes me feel like I want to have sex right now >_> Let's just say it's a sexy show. ----------opening theme-------------. It seems like it's fitting lyrically and situationally. I'd also like to loose my virginity to the closing. Or maybe I can find some kind of way to have sex with the show itself. Or I could pecome Shinbo's personal whore. Or something.
9. I'm bored, topic made. Anywho, as I'm sure you're aware, people communicate in a whole lotta ways. We talk, for starters, and often involve facial expressions and body movements with our tone. We write to each other, be it through notes or letters or using the internet to communicate in forums, instant messenger, or what have you. Some of us talk to each other via phone or, god forbid, text messaging. Now, I expect most people to say how much they love talking face to face cuz you guys are so damn normal sometimes, but what the hell, topic is valid anyway cuz some of you might think differently, and it'll still be interesting to hear your opinion on different mediums if not necessarily just the one you like most. As for me, I like doing it this way... Face-to-Face: I'm afraid I suck at this and find myself most dishonest on this front for sure. When it comes to either people I know well or people I don't know well I have an almost split personality. I find that when I first meet people or at least haven't given them too much of myself, I speek sparsely and choose my words very carefully. I don't reveal anything about myself and struggle to maintain a veil of normalcy. Then at some point, if I talk to someone enough, I will always manage to screw up and convince them that I'm some kind of idiot, and once that happens I generate an entire new personality. Rather than hide everything from someone, I let everything out at once and twist myself to look like a freak. I get used to being that kind of person and I start forcing it on myself and digging my own grave. Eventually i end up constantly lying about myself to make them keep thinking poorly of me. What's odd is, if I know someone really well in school or something, I absolutely cannot talk to them in public. no matter how much I seem like an open book at school, I close everything outside of it. People i joke around with and stuff I turn stiff and can't really get a conversation going - it just feels totally awkward. I try to avoid running into people, and when they confront me, I find any excuse to bail out of the conversation. The only people who see the real me are those who come over to my house, which is only my closest friends. Here they can see me relaxed and honest about myself. When I'm at home, I am what I am. I don't act a fool or a freak, and I don't try to seem like a good person. That's the only time this kind of communication works for me. Writing via notes or internet: I find that here I am as honest as I am at home, which is probably because I'm at home on my computer. I talk about what i'm thinking about and that's all that I am. I find it funny that the internet is considered so untrustworthy, since I trust everything I read on here like a total idiot, lol. I've talked about why I love the internet so much in other threads already, so I won't bore you again with the details, but I gotta say, it's a beautiful medium, and I've met some of the best friends I've ever had on here. I've always hoped that one day I could use the internet as a bridge over the awkward gap into talking to someone face-to-face, but naturally, that's the entire fatal flaw of the web, lol. What's funny is, though, that most of that is true for forums, which allow you time to really think of the best way to say something. Something like AIM that works more like a real conversation can be more dangerous. I thought for a time that I felt dishonest about moderating what I say through forum posts, but it keeps me from making a fool out of myself (well, except for when I'm being a fool XD). Phones: I hate phones. I REALLY hate phones. And texting. I can't even talk to family members on the phone without feeling weird.
10. Don't highlight the spoilers if you haven't seen it! Big plot twists! Anywho, I'm a huge fan of Shaun of the Dead - it made me into a big fan of zombie films and won me over with it's exquisite blend of comedy, gore, and great characters. Naturally it's one of my all time favorite movies, so I had high hopes for Hot Fuzz, and I was not disappointed. I was surprised, though, that it was way more of a horror movie sort of parody than a cop action film. this movie definitely had some of the most brutal scenes I've ever seen, and I thought they did an amazing portrayal of said scenes in the way that they had a comedy movie that was still shocking as hell and a little frightening. I gotta say, the part where
the pillar crushes that guy's skull and the blood positively shoots everywhere was awesomely sick.
Honestly, I think this is like the uultimate movie in many ways. When it comes to horror movies, the thing i have always hated about them is that they are always eiter really campy and lame or take themselves too seriously. Hot Fuzz has an absurd and yet brilliant plotline with the kind of twists you don't really see coming but aren't stupidly thrown out. While it is scary and gory, it's funny and charming, and is an odd but beautiful mix. As for the comedy aspect, I have never seen brutal comedy done this well. The movie rivals Pulp Fiction in it's combination of action and laughs, especially for the fact that some of it's most intense, dramatic scenes force a smile.
The part where Nicholas Angel is arguing with the other officers quite heatedly and everyone is placing quarters for each other in the swear jar was amazing, as well as the reveal of the plot twist by the village council. Even the utterly horrifying part where Nicholas is running throught the underground cavers where there's hundreds of corpses of the the bad people in the village is made funny when you see the living statue in his death pose.
And, of course, the movie also features one of the longest, most over-the-top gunfights I've ever seen going all around the village and stuff. It really instilled the feeling that so much was happened and you wanted to see these people dead so bad so it was like 'alright, *** kickin time!' and of course that was all great fun. And then, of course, the ending was perfect.
Danny Butterman gets shot and the first thought going through my head is 'dammit! that's it! It's ruined!' my brother was about to cry he was so pissed and then you see him at the grave and of course Danny's alive! That was spectacular, and the perfect last laugh for the movie.
I can't sing enough praise for this one, and I'll prolly pick it up as a birthday gift this wednesday (16 biyatch!).
11.
Heh, at least you are back. ^_~ I was beginning to wonder what happened. lol The idea of you staying away from the Internet willingly just didn't fit! Anyway, I'm definately ready to get this show on the road. After all I'm very curious about the phenomena that took Joe's mind as well as the minds of other espers.
yeah, dun worry, I'll get to it soon. My new router is a little weird and yestersay stopped working half the day, but I think we've fixed it, so I should be back to work by tonight. Once more, I'm sorry this story has seen soooo many delays on my part, but like I said before I hope to pick it up a lot with the coming pieces in Yatahaze. The theme of the chapter is 'change' and hopefully I will represent it well. So far I've felt this story has been very Harry Potter-but-older with it's focus on characters lives and minor dabbling in the psychological. I'm destroying that this chapter, and it will be far more direct. The psychological, psysical, and communication facets of the story should all come together directly and it will probably more dramatic as well as intense and entertaining.
12.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Like Cowboy Bebop, everybody and their uncle has seen this one. This show is arguably .
And believe me, it is argued XD there's never been an Eva thread without a massive debate involved. But yeah, if you've never seen it, you NEED to. Anyway, if you're looking for anime that's out on DVD in the us... well, it's hard for me to say. After all, it depends on why you liked FMA. If you liked it for the impressive character development and sometimes deep storytelling and the sense of realism involved, I might reccommend you onto something like Haibane Renmei or Boogiepop Phantom. If you liked it for action and comedy and all that rot, I'll send you after Full Metal Panic or Generator Gawl. Just the sentence 'I was looking through some and none of the names looks really good... ' makes me want to say 'go watch Narutard j00 effing n00b' or something equally cruel XD
13. Have I ever told you guys how much I love you? XD
14. ZOMG A GAR CONTEST!!!! 1. Archer from Fate/Stay Night (this is a given) 2. Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann 3. Roy Fokker from Super Dimensional Fortress Macross SPECIAL! 4. King Leonidas from 300.
15. This looks easily to be the most stylishly wild action series of the year, and within the first episode has proven itself to be a true pulp hit. Darker Than Black, eat your heart out XD Anywho, even though this show is jumpy as hell and more than a little confusing, I can't wait to see how it develops. Especially since episode one explained so very little, lol. Basically theres one good reason I'm gunna keep close tabs on this one - the rediculous over-the-top gore. Fingers get cut off, heads get blown off, people turned into 'beehives' others tortured with scissors and knives.... absolutely beautiful gore. With all it's americanism and violence I can't help but feel like they were trying to channel Tarantino with this one, and while I doubt anyone can channel his awesomeness, I'm still interested in how this turns out. Also, I tend to enjoy any anime adapted from a novel >_> it's a really weird bias of mine. I agree with Raiyuu about the weird voice actors. Every time the butler said 'CA-roulllleeeeeeee' I chuckled. That guy is downright creepy. I also want to implement said point system. It's true, these guys are the absolute worst at explaining things, which leads me to this week's Phrase of the Week... "The vegetation at the foot of that rainbow might be burning." CLASSIC!!!
16. When I was in third (and probably a little in fourth) grade I was harassed daily for being the only kid still obsessed with Pokemon. That's most of what I can remember. Over the years, I've never been 'isolated' by it. I might be harassed by one or two people, but **** them anyway. I know who my friends are XD It's funny cuz now in high school and no one cares if you like Pokemon - there's even people you can find to sing the old opening power-metal style with you XD (and yeah, I'm still obsessed with Pokemon). As for the internet, theres a site for every anime in existence, so it's impossible to not find someone who likes what you like. Tis why I'm here, lol. So I'll never feel isolated on t3h web.
17. Grr... no one else wants to sign up? I thought it might be a problem to start this at the same time as Project Starship >_< In any event, I'm just gunna leave this open a day or two more in case this bump has any effectt, but otherwise, I'll just take what I've got.
18. yes, soon as I'm done checking the buhmillion things I need checked and rereading the last few posts I'll get started on getting moving. It appears that a couple people don't really intend to move on, so I guess I'll be leaving a couple people behind :animesigh I will keep Squiggs though since she sems intent on continuing.
19. My life is sitting on Otakuboards and Megatokyo and watching anime and reading manga. The last week I had no internet, so my brother and I and our friends played Halo and Halo 2 almost nonstop the entire week. That and I recorded some songs using GarageBand. And I played some RPGs. And my family went to the beach today. ...I've been awake for around 27 hours and am staying up on sheer determination to not let all the threads I've missed loose their bold print. This is as eciting as life gets for me. I am not a very interesting person whatsoever.
20. Sometimes, in life, things happen when you least expect it and take you by surprise and change your whole life. A relative or pet can die, you can be horribly wounded, or find out you have a terrible disease. Or a lightning storm can fry your router leaving you without internet for a full week XD Sorry bout that, yall.
21.
Where I live masterpieces like that can't be found. Things that are good, you can never find where I live. But from what you just said and what Jake has said before, Agollach sounds profound, and an essential addition to anyone's music collection. From what I gather the only bad thing about them is trying to find which album to get cause they all sound so good. >_< So what CD is the best anyways?
First of all, you most obviously do not know how to use the internet. Go to youtube, type 'agalloch', go to purevolume, type 'agalloch' go to dogpile, tab over to music, type 'agalloch' it's not that hard >_> Their best album? Depends on your taste. My two favorite songs of theirs, as stated above, are from Ashes Against the Grain, but I don't like any of the other songs as much on that album. The Mantle is the favorite of most fans, but it's actually probably my least favorite of their albums. While there are some truly amazing songs on it such as In the Shadow of our Pale Companion, You Were But a Ghost in my Arms, and A Desolation Song the rest is simply 'good' in my opinion. It's got a lot of soul and proficiency, but it doesn't stick with you as much. Pale Folklore is my favorite of thei ralbums not for any one stand-out song, but an entire album of outstanding material. She Painted Fire Across the Skyline is a three-part masterpiece. The beginning of this song takes a bit to pick up, but once it gets going it's epic and amazing. The Mishapen Steed is one of the prettiest instrumentals I've ever heard. Hallways of Enchanted Ebony and As Embers Dress the Sky are powerhouse, amazing tracks that I never get tired of. The other two songs, Dead Winter Days and The Melancholy Spirit don't have the same impact but are definitely worhty pieces.
22. Oh my god! We're on the second page and Jake and I haven't bragged about Agalloch yet! So, yeah, Agalloch is probably the greatest band ever. The songwriting is unparalleled, the musicianship is unbelievable, and it has more emotion than anything I've ever listened to, period. It's inspirational and beautiful and I could listen to it for eternity. Falling Snow and Not Unlike the Waves from the album Ashes Against the Grain are what I would consider masterpieces as well as two of my alltime favorite songs. All three of their albums are amazing. Pale Folklore is full of beautiful imagery, The Mantle is cinematic and wondrous, and Ashes Against the Grain is downright epic. If you've never had the delight of partaking in Agalloch, you are missing out entirely.
23.
Oh you could technically say we live near a beach Crystia. The Great Salt Lake State Park/Saltair Beach. But having been to the ocean it's just not the same. But I suppose it's better than nothing right? And for an inland salty lake, the largest in the western hemisphere to be exact, the sunsets over the lake can be breathtaking. And with beautiful turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, it is popular with swimmers and sunbathers. :p Still in the end I liked the other beaches better. lol
Swiming in the Atlantic is like swimming in a giant toilet. Completely freaking disgusting. The water looks disgusting, and on some days the smell is disgusting as well. I lvive right near the ocean (lol, Virginia Beach) and it is a huge tourist spot, but I can't see how anyone can tolerate it. The place is always crowded and smelly and crap.. I hate the ocean especially... When my family goes to the beach, we usually go in the Chesepeak Bay, or where I used to live in the James River. Both are pretty disgusting themselves (especially the river) but less crowded and less of the sense that the water is going to give you cancer XD (although actually, swiming in the James is likely to give you some kind of mutation, lol)
24.
And also speaking as a guy, I've never seen the attraction to watching two chicks making out, because to be blunt. I want a chick who will make out with me. XP So even though I have no problem with it, people being gay/lesbian, etc. I've just don't get it when a guy tries to get a lesbian interested in him. It's like an oxymoron in action and painful to watch.
I can't really speak for other guys I guess, but I know that I am one of those who sees lesbians and imagines they will have sex with me. In my imagination, though, I am also a girl and a lesbian, so it's perfectly reasonable. That's just me, though... >_> yall can continue with your serious discussion now...
25.
I also nominate 2007DigitalBoy. There are a lot of members on these boards who are so serious when posting in discussions that it's depressing, and a lot of the time this stops me from particpating in some threads, but 2007DB is the contrary because of his general light-heartedness and how he can obviously take a joke without getting all personal about it. Plus, he has posted in the majority of threads recently, so being active and cool is, well, super cool. I still hate your dark orange font though. :cussing:
:animeblus I feel... so beautiful!!! Well, this is a very hard decision for me. Thre are a few good choices I have in mind, but they are mods, an dtherefor out of the picture. While nominating a person who's done a lot in the past might be fine, I don't like the idea. If we're talking about someone who embodies the very heart of otakuboards, it can't be someone who is no longer a major part of it. The OB I live in is not only made up of it's past, but of it's here and now, and that's what's most important. When I try to think of nominations, i feel a bit biased, as I would like to nominate someone who I enjoy the presence of, but I want to look past that and pick the one person who i believe is the biggest part of OB right now without being a mod. So, of course, I nominate 2007DigitalBoy. After all, he posts in every section (in almost every thread!) and he knows when it's appropriate to post intelligently or lightheartedly, with a monumental post or a short, sweet one. He can be serious, or he can be silly, depending on the situation, and always keeps things fun. He has helped inject life into many places on the OB. Wether it's reviewing stories that no one else posts on, getting lots of people hooked on various anime, or causing controversy in the music section, he's always there to keep things going and keep the party alive. DB takes pride in his place on OB which he calls his 'home away from home'. With his fun rp and revolutionary underground threads, his interest in all things Otakuboards, contributions to the sites activities such as the graphics worm and otakupedia, and much more, one cannot doubt that even if he is completely full of himself, he is a big part of otakuboards. Besides, without him, who will keep the rats at bay XDDD :p (you may all be disgusted with me now XD)
