Well, being as how I'm a guy and all my friends are girls (of all different kinds, too!) I've noticed some differences. NOTE: As a girl r a guy, though, I am not your average person, but then again most otakuites aren't very normal. I speak not for all of men, nor for all of the guys on this board, but I think if anyone could substitute me in my comparison, it's (some of) you guys. Firstly, I care not about how I am perceived. I own about a weeks worth of Tshirts and a week worth of pants, and I don't take the time to plot them. When I wake up (at 4:30 usually, but for this I'll use my equally frequent timing of 30 minutes before I gotta leave for school. ) I take a shower (well, for me it's once every 2 days), toss on my clothes (they're all black, matching is no object), run a brush through my hair (longer than yours, lol) and get to steppin. The reason for this uncaring towards my look? No one's staring, lol. I could be all dressy and stuff, but it's not going to help me in the end. Now, mind you, I've never had to pay much attention to my weight as I'm still young and have all that energy. I've never gotten fat (I'm 5'8" and weigh about 150lbs.) but the minute I get to that point, there's no telling what will happen. Of things are like they are now, with me sitting around playing MMOs 90% of my life, I'll be a fatass. Now, the girls that I know care a lot about how they look. When confronted with this, girls usually say something like "well, I just... like..." and attempt to downplay it, but there's no denying. Girls care about how they look, because it makes them. I have sat with 'popular' girls, 'goth' girls, and everything inbetween, and I have never found a group of girls who did not, at some point, start talking about clothes. Girls who are thin want to keep it that way, and bigger girls wish they were thin. Now, I can see where this ogic comes in. I adire girls for their attention to self image and accesorizing. For a long time I've looked with ardor at the more fashionable girls (and I don't mean 'summer catalog' ********, I mean girls with real, creative style) and though 'wow, that's awesome'. I think if I were to be a girl, as was your first topic, I would pay a lot more attention to my look ecause I would feel more like I could. As a guy, I try to incorporate those things into my artwork and writing instead, so that I can still have those flashy feelings. As for what you said about their control over conversations, I know what you mean. This is partly, though, because for guys it's hard to read girls, while they can read each other perfectly. For instance, in a one-on-one conversation with a girl, if a topic dies, I always wait for them to speak, because I don't know what to say. It's hard to read what they want to talk about, so I don't know what to say. Meanwhile, in a group of girls a conversation never ends because they always have the next topic on-hand and know how to portray or respond to it. When one topic dies, another one has already begun. It goes a lot like that for guys as well, except we do not seek condfirmation as much. While girls share opinions and conformations with each others through a sort of system of checks and balances, guys just assume that they are on the same page as others in their group. For instance, when my mom talks to me about something she has spoken about before to add more onto it, she always reviews what she said before, like a recap, before continuing her story. Meanwhile, my dad and I (who are both psychology and theology buffs) can pick up a conversation we ended two weeks before after the same period. what I don't know about girls is what they do in their alone time, but I can only assume it's not much different than guys. Our genders are fairly alike when we know what makes them different.
Over here, men are very particular about their (physical) appearance. Of all my male acquaintances, I know a good number of them have these kits packed with moisturizers, hair mousse and facial wash. It's also not uncommon to see men getting manicures and pedicures and facials and all that jazz.
While growing in number, these types of guys are very much a minority.

Cripes, let her move in with you! If you've got a friend in need, it should be no seond matter! Take her in! Let her help you around the house and stuff! At 19, she doesn't have to do anything her parent say, so let her come live with you, help her get on her own two feet, and then when you've got her walking, let her go off onto her path.

Name: Joe Haughm Age: 15 Gender: Male Type of Magic: Ruin Magic - Particularly Chaos Magic Weapon - Micro-filament wire. Deadly thin and able to slice through skin like butter. Good for traps mostly. Personality: Very aback, sort of removed from the surrounding world. He holds his friends in the highest regards and would die easily for those he cares about. He doesn't really care about anyone else, but if his friends would be made happy by someone else's happiness, he would go out of his way to help them. Likes to stand in the back of the line. History: Joe was born into a sort of odd family in the middle class and grew up a bit of an oddball. Has always been interested in strange things such as magic and the occult. A couple years ago he fell deeply in love with someone only to watch her die by the hands of a stranger. His resulting despair drove him away from the rest of the world. Snippet: Blank, cold blue eyes gazed into the grey mist beyond the glass of Joe's window. Every day the pain sinks deeper into his heart. The trails of his tears no longer show, but the lingering sadness burrowed in his mind is on his very breath. "Maria..." As every day, 7:00, he prays upon the alter of her spirit. It bears no icon -- merely an open window through which he begs his voice be taken upon the wind to the ears of her spirit. with somber spirit and deep breaths of longing, he removes himself from the room. Why must I live on? In his heart beats the question of why he was damned to continue life after the slaying of his beloved. Why wasn't it him? What purpose was he here for that she could not fulfill? And yet he knows that some purpose must still burn in his soul. in her fateful memory he would move the very stars to fulfill the destiny borne with him. He would forge the path upon which his very soul would march until it could meet with hers again. From his pocket he removes a business card of sorts. "Alpha Afflictus" he reads. "Let us see what path I have chosen."

Just got the Agalloch CD Pale Folklore and while I haven't technically heard it in it' entirety, I'm loving what Ive heard. The three part epic She Painted Fire on the Skyline is a major awesomness, especially at the beginning of part 3 (in my sig.) Every track on here is speectacular, though a special nod goes to As Embers Dress the Sky as Ive been listening to it for a long time and loving it. I love these lyrics. Beautifully poetic.

Okay, I'm to get this logo made into a banner, preferedly with all that super-cool digital editing that you guys are awesome at and I wish I could do. I prefer it remain dark, and cool looking. If you think you could make an even cooler looking version of the word, go ahead. It reads "Agalloch". As for text, i'd like it to be very small, and read "We are the wounds..." Thanks a bunch!
Boy, can't argue with that logic.
I'm trying to figure out if that was sarcasm or agreement, but in the end I'll just write it down as poppycock. Either way, I think I said that just to make a point, friend. Off topic statements: 1 Forgotten-Hero: a puzzled expression.

It would be easy to imbune a mountain of sarcasm in my post, as has been done several times already in this thread, but I don't think it's worth it. May favorite members... well, I've always been a fan of Dagger. She knows everything there is to know about anime it seems and she has very similar tastes as I do, so I always go to her for advice plus she's a kick-*** administrator and my go-to for name changes. I'm also pretty cool with Jakehammeren. He and I are both crawlers of the Music forum and he's intirduced me to some bands that have quickly become some of y favorites. If any member has effected my tatstes more than any other, it's probably him. Also, everyone's gotta love D_W. Forgotten-Hero, I guess I kinda feel connected to you as well, after having reviewed so many of your stories and watching you improve (albeit slowly at times) As for who's popular, that's a dumb question. we all know who they are.

Be honest here 2007DigitalBoy [/B']if you saw a list like that especially with all the nonsense going on these days, I would imagine you too might be startled or even frightened by it until you got to know them.
I have a list of people I want dead myself. Or rather, a list of people the world would be better off without. It hold no fruition. Kids with these lists are just beng dumb. We get emotional about people picking on us and so we start hating oters and hating ourselves. We tell ourselves 'oh yeah? Well I'll just kill you then!' Most of us don't have the constitution to do so. There are those who are driven over the edge. I'm thankful to have never been driven that far, but by god if there haven't been times when I just wanted to mow people down. Thank god there's video games to sustain some of us, or we might be dangerous.
I however, feel that those who are seen as diverging from conventional schemes are the rather interesting, amazing, and even extraordinary ones. Your average this or that does not garner as much attention as the thing that stands out.
Most people seem to have this opinion too when they get to know people like me. The reason being, most people who are outcasts are just like normal people. If we hadn't grown up in an environment tat forced us to be reclusive, we'd be into the same things as everyone else, living the same happy lives. In a way, beng picked on can make a lot of us better people. We don't want to be like those people who tormented us, uz we don't want more people to suffer. That's why sometimes a 'freakish' peron can be so nice to others. We only pray someone will see through the shell of pain.

I've been through a million self-image issues, all of which I came out of not caring anymore. you are who you are, you do what you want. Is getting fat justification for eating less? It's up to you. I ever do anything if I don't want to, dso if I don't want to watch my calories, i ignore it. Nothing changes. Sometimes I do get on a health kick, but only if it's enjoyable and I'm making it fun. Life is meaningless if you don't enjoy it.

Same here. I like Retri's idea of using random words and going off of that (fruit and veggie genocide? Like in Disgustipated?) cause it can take you places you don't expect. Using ideas you've brewed on is dangerous cause it may not turn out like you invision. With random topics you can pull something out that's crazy, new, and fun.

Oh, dear, sweet god I could have reched through the computer abd smacked you in the face after readin that first post. You want to know what I'm afraid of? Prejudice. I'm afraid that people are gunna hate me or be afraid of me enough that they're gunna kill me. That one day I'll be chased into a windmill and burned to a crisp for not understanding society. What I fear is the omplete lack of acceptance that I've had to deal with every day of my life. Who are the freaks I've met? Who scares me? All of the people like you.

if you've lost contact, t shouldn't seem strane to go reestablish it. What friends are for and all. After all, you seem like a good guy (would have to be to be so reserved lol.) I'd say go over there and hang out. Like you would anyway. Won't be a big deal unless you wait too long.

If you could form a supergroup, who would be in it and why? here's the rules: no more than 6 band members, and no more than 2 from the same band. Talk about who plays what, and what they sound like. mine would be... The Nameless Conglomerate Vocals/ Guitarist - Mikael Akderfelt (Opeth) - i love this guys voice utterly. he;s got the best of prog and the best of death metal all mixed into one. Plus he can olay guitar well. Lead Guitar - Omar A Rodriguez-Lopez (the Mars Volta) - This guy can make just about any sort of strange ambient noise with his guitar, plus he can shred and lay out a totally awesome salsa melody. He's a brilliant composer and has a totally wicked afro. What's not to love? Secondary Guitar/ Vocals - Claudio Sanchez (Coheed And Cambria) - Another great voice that is distinct enough for some great vocal harmony between him and Mikael. He may not be the fastest guitarist or most technical, but he's come up with some of my alltime favorite riffs, so he gets to be in. Plus he can rock an acoustic. Bass/ Vocals - Peter Steele (Type O Negative) - Once again, his voice could work well with the other guys as it is very distinct, and he is a great bassist, seeing as how most of Type O's music is bass oriented. He would add the gothi edge to their sound. Drums - Danny Carey (Tool) - Danny is an astounding technical drummer with, to put it simply, mad skillz. He can play fast and sound amazing, and that's just what my supergroup needs. Synthesizer/ Other strange instruments/ Vocals - Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon) - Arjen can play pretty much any instrument, and he plays just about every one on his Ayreon albums. Wether it be maniacal keyboards, violin melodies, or the magical didgeridoo, he can do it all. Plus his voice has that sort of eighties flare which any band can use. Their sound: Naturally, this band would be uber-prog-rock-opera-super-epic. They'd be focused on creating technical, explosive, and beautifully composed music. In the spirit of prog, their music would be fast and heavy at times, while softer at others. Sometimes they could have big heavy death-metal music, then at others tone it into a more dragged-out goth sound with deep and crazy riffs. Mikael and Claudio could break out the acoustics sometimes and rock a poetic verse or two as well. I only hope their creative ppersonalities don't collide (seeing as how Claudio, Omar, and Arjen all write all the music in their respective bands.)

I finally got a new CD here (well, CDs) so i've got some new songs to add. I've already been through most of my favorite opeth songs, but I'll now be tossing Ghost of Perdition and Harlequin Forest on the pile as well with the arrival of my new Ghost Reveries CD. Hours of Wealth is another beauty if i haven't already metioned that one. Also, I Know you're ****ing Someone Else by Type O Negative is purely awesome. You gotta get this stuck in your head when you hear it, lol. Especially the chorus.

I'm mildly impressed! This is actually readable, coherent... it's like you leveled up! Good job. I'd rank this around the skill of 'cliche anime script' or so. I'd say you still have a long way to go before you're gradeworthy though. Your sentence structure is what's really annoying here. You always have. One sentence. For each attribute. of a character. See how annoying. It is? You gotta combine a lot of your sentences, like Tekkaman said. Also, while at times you can be decsriptive, there are others where you're jumpy. You need to work on being consistently descriptive, and prioritive where descrioption is necessary. For instance...
Ilo was never good with waking up. The simple yell of his name startled the living hell out of him.
Not important.
?What the heck just happened?? Ilo hollered. Soon a little old man came up to the two
Way too sudden. Your characters are fairly cliche as well, although that's something you may want to worry about after you're done fixing the current issues you have. Another thing, it's important to get a feel for each new area. They may not have spent much time in that magically appearing town, but if you don't describe it we;ve got nothing to go on. I'm still clueless as to the time where this takes place. And if you're going to describe the place, do it as they arrive. There have been times when I've asked you to add something and you do it in the next chapter where we needed it in the previous one >_< In any event, you're improving a bit. EDIT: Oh, and you spelled persevere wrong in the title, lol

Writing What do the OB members favor?
2010DigitalBoy replied to Aberinkula's topic in Creative Works
It really depends with me. As with most things, I am increadibly picky about books. My favorite book of all time, Boogiepop Phantom, could be considered a psychological thriller I guess. That'd prolly be my favorite genre. I voted for Fantasy, though. There aren't a lot of fantasy book that catch my attention, mostly because they tend to be so cliche, but I've always been a fan of fantasy in general (I dress up as elves and orcs and the like and run around my backyard with big swords.)Vampire Hunter D (the first one since te second one was SO bad I decided to not buy the rest) was a pretty good fantasy story even if the writer was a power abuser. I guess I'm just a fan of certain novels. -
Peter Steele of Type O Negative deserves mention. His style is singing in super-low key and with a DEEP voice. This guy's ike 6'9" or so and HUGE so it's no surprise he sings deep, but it's hilarious to see ths huge dude with a chain for a bass strap singing things like "Cinnamon Girl" and "Summer Brreeze". Very good style.

I actually thought it was alright, Jake. Not bad for a solo project. It may even be comparable to your average black/folk metal band. I kind of expected more prog influence from someone who's favorite bands are Opeth and Agalloch, but it was alrigt noneteless. Reminded me of Amon Amarth, which I guess was your goal.

Writing Book research: Can it help? [PG13 related material]
2010DigitalBoy replied to Aberinkula's topic in Creative Works
I disagree. Even watching movies can be helpful if you're taking a critical approach to the script/story. The same basic principles of storytelling apply as much to manga/comics and other mediums as to novels. Besides, learning what not to do is just as important as figuring out what makes good writing good. ~Dagger~
The reason I say not to read manga is because it' different in too mny ways from novel writing. A lot of people try to write based on the stuff tey read in manga and a lot of situations they portray seem odd or the action is badly paced. Between the vast nuber of bad manga that are popular and the many manga that have things like extremely random moments or little notes from the artist and such things, manga can be a bad influence. Not to say that absolutely no manga can hlp you. I thhink Death Note or Boogiepop are god for anyone, heh. As for learning what not to do, that's only okay if you can identify what not to do. If you're going trough the trouble of asking what to look at, you prolly don't know. -
Or how about an attention grabber? He may not even be for real, just a crazy actor trying to get us all riled up. I bet he's rich too, the bastard. Anyway, people like this are powerless if you ignore them.

Writing Book research: Can it help? [PG13 related material]
2010DigitalBoy replied to Aberinkula's topic in Creative Works
Hero, in your case, even if it only helps a tiny but, I'd go for it, lol. Yes, I'd say reading more could help you adopt your own style. Just be careful what you read. Reading manga will not help you. If anything, it can only make you worse (especially if you're reading freaking Inuyasha). I second the notion of 1984 if you're looking for a sort of bleak outlook. If you want it to be a personal tale, read To Kill A Mockingbird. For a more psychological angle go for A Scanner Darkly or Boogiepop And Others (best book ever). If you want suspense, try The Davinci Code (only story to piss me off with suspense, lol.) -
if a friend of mine were to have lost a loved one, no, I wouldn't care. I'd merely allow them space to work things out, or comfort them if it is their wish. That is perfectly normal, I would think.
-
Haven't had one in a while, but here goes nothing. I'm A Medeival Man from the World of Warcraft soundtrack. It's just plain great and hilarious. You have to look it up, especially if you like WOW.

There was a thread about this, but it was 2 years old and I figured a lot more people would have read it by now. So far I'm just finishing volume 3 of this, and I'm quite impressed. I love the art style, and the story actually holds my attention. I admit it gets preachy, but it's intelligent. It isn't like "freindship pulls you thru!!!!!" like some manga (including some by CLAMP.) for those who don't know, it's about a guy named watanuki who sees (and is tormented by) spirits. By some magic, he end up at a shop that grants wishes in exchange for their valued possesions. Watanuki ends up working for the shop owner Yuko and her twin doll creations. Yuko is totally crazy and makes for the comedy aspect of the manga and their missions of helping people lay the story's groundwork. It's also a crossover story with another CLAMP manga, Tsubasa. Watanuki is a great character. He's whiney, but likable. The way he interacts with Yuko is hilarious. Also, I like the two little girl twin things (although I find it strange that they showed one of their breasts and didn't get a higher rating on the manga. Go CLAMP!) The crossover with Tsubasa is the one thing that actually don't like about this manga. I hate Tsubasa, I think it's too much like Rave Master, but with worse art and no unique qualities. It's interactions with XXX Holic arent so bad though.
Next time please check the directory before creating a new series specific thread. Thanks. ~indifference
