Thanks. Kind of ironic, Train of Thought was my first DT cd as well. Good stuff. And I love Opeth too. I have the three you have plus the new one, Ghost Reveries. That one is even better than Blackwater Park in my opinion, though I count them together as the best Opeth has done, along with Damnation. I first heard Akerfeldt on The Human Equation and enjoyed his voice, and I'm also partial to some death metal so I gave Opeth a try and was really impressed. And if you don't have it, you should pick up their Lamentations live concert DVD.
I've actually got the CD version of that show as I bought a box set with all the disks I curently own (it's hilarious, because the boxset is rife with spelling errors and they screwed up the track listing on the Lamentation disks so my player thinks they're different songs.) I've gotta say, the Human Equation is amazing. Arjen seems to be able to play anything! I can't wait to grab the Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence CD as well. Pearls & Brass - This band isn't really like any of the other bands I lesten to, nor any other band I've heard personally. They're about as underground as underground gets since I can't find a single freaking person who listens to them, but they are definetally awesome. Their LP The Indian Tower is a masterpiece in a can (or rather, a disk). From the energetic grooves of songs like No Stone and The Mirror to the dragged-out-holy-crap-this-is-some-great-stuff riffage of Beneath the Earth, this disk is totally wicked sweet-awesome and contains ultimate riff-bustin. The best part, though, is the 2 acoustic tracks which are easily the coolest acoustic songs ever, Away The Mirrors being one of my alltime favorite tracks. I don't know what draws me to a stoner-rock, raw, blues-injected bass-guitar-drum jammer group, but I can't get enough.
Favorite bands... hard to choose just a few, but I'll just talk about the best ones. Rush: The single greatest rock band of all time. Rush is excellent classic hard rock, and very progressive in the early days with alot of epic songs. They've changed with the times but have still managed to make great music. Some fans may diagree, but I particularly enjoy their 80s material from Permanent Waves up to Hold Your Fire. Dream Theater: Despite appearing later than other founding Prog Metal bands, DT have become the poster boys for the genre. Every member is virtuostic in the playing of their instruments and the wailing vocals of James LaBrie are a perfetc match. Some of their best material includes the nearly 24-minute song A Change of Seasons as well as Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory, a concept album about a man tormented by dreams of a past life. Ayreon: A project started by Dutch composer/instrumentalist/vocalist/producer Arjen Lucassen, Ayreon revived the "Rock Opera". Every album tells a story, and Lucassen assmebles and ever-changing team of people to perform the music, as well as enlist some of the biggest names in Prog to perform the vocals of the various characters.
you are awesome. And what perfect timing as today i just got my first Dream Theater CD (Train of Thought) as well as The Human Equasion (totally freaking awesome, way better than I thought it'd be). AND you like Rush. We need to hang out, heh. Annnnywhooo.... Opeth - These guys are awesome and create the defining bridge between my two favorite types of music, prog and death metal. They've got the best singer ever (Mikael Akderfelt!) as well as the best of their genres. I currently only posess 3 of their CDs, Deliverance, Blackwater Park, and Damnation, but I still love them. My least favorite of the 3 is Deliverance mostly just because it drags on too long at some points. In a lot of ways it's like Train of Thought by Dream Theater with all the cool quirks taken out. I do love the song Master's Apprentices though. Blackwater Park is probably the best Death metal albums I've ever heard and is well-imbuned with prog influence. Dirge For November is my favorite song on there with the best blend of the lightest sound and the heaviest, darkest metal from the bottom of the pit. Damnation is what I consider the opus magnum of this band's music, though. Songs like Windowpanes, In My Time Of Need, and Death Whispered A Lullaby are just indefinebly great. Akderfelt is amazing.

Just like with Opeth, i only just learned about this band and then later discovered that it's lead singer was a part of Ayreon. The band being Dream Theater. These guys are pretty awesome and I've been loving some of their tracks, epecially since I know own the Train of Thought CD. If you like Progressive Rock or metal I'd definetally reccomend them. Endless Sacrifice, As I Am, Caught In A Web, The Great Debate, Stream of Concienceness, they have a lot of amazing tracks which I'd love to nominate. EDIT: Day Twelve: Trauma = best of Ayreon

My beginning are not unlike yours, comrade. I was born to a heavy metal family. I grew up on Beevis And Butthead and Sesame Street like any child. It had never occured to me at the time, but until I was around 5 years old I'd never really met anyone outside my family. I was apparently really smart because I never forgot anything and I was writing my name before preschool (all over the walls, no less!) and I was wearing glasses since early childhood. One thing I've always been trademarked for is having long hair (being a guy.) I very much looked like a girl (and did all the way till over a year ago when I grew a moustache). By second grade I was being called a genius by my teachers and they decided to send my to a 'gifted school'. Now, around this time Pokemon had just recently peaked in popularity and I was more into it that basically anybody. When third grade began I was there with dorky glasses, long hair, and Pokemon t-shirts on and was insatntly a laughing stock. Kids would make fun of me, try to get me in trouble, play keep-away with my jacket, such things. Like you, Adahn, I never got beat up, so I never told anyone. On top of that, my parents were going through some very rough 'adult things' and both were in constant emotional turmoil. My mom has always been very pressuring when it came to school work, and to me, getting a 'C' on my report card was no different from death. I was obviously not ready for this school, but I desperately clung to it. i have the most vivid memory of putting clothespins on my mouth and nose in an attempt to kill myself while I cried over my life. How could I understand what was wrong? Anyway, because of a teacher in 4th grade who was insane (and later got fired) I left that school to go back to my old one (we lived in that house for 4 years, the longest I've ever lived in one house by far) where I still sufered obscurity. Even as I progressed to 7th grade, I was picked on. I still wore glasses, which people often stole, still had long hair, which people often pulled, and was way obsessed with anime and nintendo at the time. I also had never sworn so it was pretty crazy. In 8th grade I took a new stance. People were now laughing at me for a whole new reason. At this point (also, my glasses had now been left behind) I decided to act like a complete idiot before everyone. While I knew I was really a genius (and at this time a big-time gamer) everyone who I hung out with (nerds) knew me as the crazy idiot. I began cussing like a sailor and making perverted jokes out of everything. my grades started to thin a bit and things looked grim. At the start of 9th grade I moved to an all-black school and only about 4 people (anime nerds) were willing to pay me any mind. I was still a crazy idiot and because my family was poor at the time, I was mentally deteriorating. I spent all my time on message boards and completely lost myself. For the first time, I began to really feel my emotions. Halfway through that year I moved to where I live now. Over time, I began to learn much more about society, psychology, politics, the world, what people were thinking, all at once until I got to the point where I could practically read minds. After a MAJOR depression last summer and some strange experiences I came out as I am now. All these things culminated me into what I am now. A creature. a monster. An entity. A beholder of the truth. A witness of mankind's hatred. A belover of evil and hatred. A sworn enemy of the human race. A hopeful romantic. A depressed abbarition. A patient ghost. I live part in my own world and part in yours, looking at you with hope and pain, like a mother who has to watch her son slowly die. (admittedly, Im glad all this happened to me lol)

they usually aren't worth the cost, and what's the point of buying them for someone else when you could buy one for yourself for cheaper? Besides, if you care about someone, you should be doin more for them than a freaking candy-gram. Good way for the school to raise money though.

I get the feeling this was his intention all along. Maybe he wanted to create the thread like this so that everyone would get like this and then in that way we would have become what he wanted us to become. I think we fell into his trap, so to speek. That or I'm reading to much into it. It's not like he can come out and say this is the truth or something, and no one will ever believe it, but I'd be interested to know if he's rubbing his hands and giggling as we toil mindlessly over sich an insignificant piece if universe (and before anyone says the don't care, you do). Also @ Adahn: Does't thou now feel my sorrow?
Don't flatter yourself. I'm not impressed with people who can't communicate what they mean to say clearly and concisely. Adahn can create pretty good topics (see the gay marriage one), and I participate actively in those. But topics created to essentially ramble on philosophically are rarely if ever good ones. To quote Shakespeare, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. I don't ask for much, just a topic that asks a question without being superfluously roundabout or long winded. Just ask "Why are you on OB?", and you have a decent topic.
I accept that oppinion, but that's what people should say up-front instead of being snide and disrespectful with meaningless and cruel posts that I can't help but wonder how they aren't against the rules. (and I'm not stabbing at you personally or maybe even at all) Even if you think he's crazy, at least he's being respectful.

@ Adahn: Irony. Responsive action duplication. Invisible enactments. I don't know how to spell half of what I'm saying. To what voice spoken withdrawn? @ DeathKnight: Then say it, don't spray it. EDIT: because Adahn doesnt understand them, heres a translation of the things I've said. (Why can't people just derive their own meanings?) Stalactite ambitions. Rationality de-loused? Perhaps. Wither oppinion, fortify self-righotous citadel. Adahn, the temperal lobe. Perception's inquiry contextualixed? Blurred colors. You've got high hopes. Are you being irrational? Perhaps. Destroy opinions, formulate your mind withing ours. Adahn, the mind ruler. Doees this thread pertain to perceptions? I'm confused. ah, tis rhetoric. Constent repitition. Relentless stagger. A 'home base'. time unrelenting. Thoroughly constutional connection. Reverberations referred mindedly spacial pertinence. Equivicality towards being. Ancient habitual wonders. Repeated attempts... personal stalactites (a common thread, seemingly). Undaltered faith Ah, that's what you meant. For me, it's repitition. Always staggering, using this site as a cruth or "home base". i've been here a while. I feel like I have a connection to it. (i don't remember what I meant by the next sentence) It is part of my mind. A habit I've had. I've tried towards something which I hold tight to attaining (a common thread, seemingly). I have faith in OB. EDIT AGAIN: as for this last post... Irony. Responsive action duplication. Invisible enactments. I don't know how to spell half of what I'm saying. To what voice spoken withdrawn? How ironic. you don't understand what I'm saying, but you want everyone to change their speech patterns. I don't know how to spell half of what I'm saying (that was literal) So, what voice do you suggest?
Thank god, I was waiting for someone to say that.
Why does it seem like every time Adahn starts a topic it's littered with sarcastic, breif, off-topic posts which to nothing but to degrade the conversation and generate needless controversy? Just tell us why your here, why you gotta be hatin? Anywho, Adahn, you respond to all but my post? I'm hurt :p

I have a VERY weak spot for black lace lol. Yes, I do think the goth-lolita look is totally awesome and everyone should wear it _> (all the girls at least.) *would wear it if I were a girl* *wishes guys had clothes that cool* I can't claim to know anything about japanese fasion or any ways of obtaining it (I'm no expert) but I'm willing to bet there are some sort of import sites around. Give ebay a try, heh.

A lot of people like to talk about what would be their perfect day, or what days sucked for them. I wanna know about your good days you've had recently. Times when you didn't go on an all-out haooy-fest, but had a nice, good day and went to bed with a smile on your face. Today is shaping up to be a good day for me. you see, this week is exam week and today I only had to take 1 exam. I thought I had to go in at 9:30, so i slept in 9already it was becoming a good day.) in fact, I was supposed to go in at 7 as is normal, so around 8 my guidance counselor called looking for me. 10 minutes later I was at the front desk, and the receptionist wrote me an excused pass (awesome.) So I ran in, took a 200-question exam in under an hour (easiest exam ever, and I know i aced it) and came back home by 9:30 to just chill. I know have 5 hours on my own to do whatever I want and, more importantly, chill. After a week of headache-inducing stress, I can lean back and listen to Type o Negative while sipping on sweet sweet Mountain Dew. And because tommorrow I don't have to go in till 9:30 for real, I can stay up all night as well! So, how was your good day?

*realises I've been doing these two a week* sorry bout that. Gotta make sure I get them before they change. this week it's a few of the strangest songs by what is easily the strangest band I know. These songs would be Day 11: Love, Day 16: Loser, and Day 9: School by the rock opera group Ayreon. I heard about them a long time ago but never gave much of a listen, then came back when I found out Mikael Akderfelt was a singer on The Human Equasion. Three strange and great songs. I may buy the CD.

Pardon me while I burst Into flames I've had enough of the world And it's people's mindless games So pardon me while I burst and rise above the flames Pardon me, pardon me I'll never be the same Would you rather... Emplode or implode (meaning you could possibly take the whole universe with you)

Well, this is mostly all in my profile already, but whatever. Well, I'd say music but for me that's more a way of life than a hobby. So is the internet, so I'll disclude them. I like playing video games, though inly under the right conditions. Usually I only get into video games during my small periods of complete sanity which come about as often as every 6 weeks usually lasting from 1 to 3 weeks. I like RPGs but I rarely find time to play them, so I only ever end up beating short action games. i'm not all that skilled at gaming, but I know a lot more about it than most. I love anime, especially unique or intelligent ones. I am very picky about which ones I enjoy and I love Neon Genesis Evangelion, The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya, Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, Kino's Journey, FLCL, and more... I'm even more of a manga fan since I can read it all the time (and have read most of mine a lot of times). My favorites include Death Note, Boogiepop, Naruto, King of Bandits: Jing, Ragnarok, and more I like some novels, but I mostly only read ones related to anime or manga. My absolute all time favorite is Boogiepop And Others which I've read like 10 times, and I also like the other Boogiepop novels. I hope to get my hands on Kino no Tabi and the Haruhi books ASAP. I'm not to big of a movie person but I love Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, The matrix trilogy, and more I love writing although i've yet to complete a full novel as is my dream. I've got an uber amount of poetry and songs. I like to draw but I basically suck at it. That's about all.
Then perhaps you could explain in more depth why you state everything is everyone's fault. We could be misunderstanding or harping on you for false reasons. Just that one statement: EVERYTHING is EVERYONE'S fault doesn't tell the full story but it's loud enough to draw our attention.
Tut tut, I'm no martyr. Honestly, i don't know why i try. So sew me, I obviously don't belong in an arguement like this. I disperse victory to those who consider my opposition. My final comments before taking leave: says who? Thank you, and have fun.
-
If you pardon Death Knight's ad hominem arguments for a moment. The reason your statement is wrong is because it is a logical fallacy. The statement that "everything" is "everyone's fault" is evading the premise of the discussion. The argument when applied to homosexual marriage falls under the logical fallacy of dicto simpliciter; a sweeping generalization to a very exceptional situation. Why are you bothering to ask this question when you already know the answer if you simply think about it? Don't worry Erik, I'll reply to your comment as soon as I finish my work for the day.
Don't take that question so much at face value. I didn't mean what I said there. Anywho, yes it is an oversimplification. But the world is overly complicated. I think a simplified view could save us all. Also, @ Boo: I read it. It isn't an explanation.
-
Funnily enough it's because God hates you.
Well then, he/she/it... tetragrammaton should join the club. To Boo: I'm not just using quotes and lines to sound cool. I honestly trust that opinion i stated and stand by it until you can somehow provide me significant evidence otherwise. Isn't that what a debate is all about? Not just calling me an idiot but actully backing it up?
-
Really, no.
why not? And why are such brief, offtopic posts allowed so often? Mine included. ...and seriously, why IS this an issue?
-
Sorry to be off-topic, but could any of you give me advice on how to actually go about starting a band? You see, I really want to sing for a band and I've written more lyrics than i can think of and I've got all sorts of ideas for song working. The only problem is, I don't know where to look for musicians! No one I know plays instruments (and Im not popular) so how did you guys find people? (hopefully someone has a whole band here)
Could you be more offensive to Christians [and, since they too follow the Old Testament of the Bible, Jews - which makes that last comment all the more inappropriate] everywhere? Not all Christians oppose gay marriage - I for one couldn't care less how someone else chooses to live their life - heck, I don't even oppose abortion or euthanasia. I can understand why you may feel as you do - I used to feel the same way - but do try to hold your tongue, in respect for those of us who aren't li'l Hitlers, okay?
Oh believe me, I could probably be more offensive to Christians. And yeah, what I said was wrong. Especially since I'm of Jewish heritage and my great grandparents actually were escapees of WW2. And no, I will not hold my tongue. Why? Because the actions of few are the responsibility of all, myself included. EVERYTHING is EVERYONE'S fault. What I say in offense, I say to all of mankind.

i liked this one very much. As a personal hater towards people who think they're vampires and get it all wrong, I've always wanted to see how real vampires would react (though my personal vision has much more swordplay, hehe). I like the way Nils ans amelia interact (plus, I like the name Nils. Ever since I first saw it in Fire Emblem it's been one of my favorite character names.) Your story is super-nifty despite it's brevity. I give it a high five.
-
Your input on the issue rings strikingly true with me, DB. Except, of course, the bit about people still believing in the Bible. The Bible has some very good ideas, and I think following it correctly will lead to equality and perfection. I do not claim to know[/i'] the correct way to follow it, but it is my will to find the correct path.
That may be true, but I can think of a good many other books with some great advice that don't rely on rediculous stories and religious cults run by corruption and lies. Good ideas... if you're Hitler. As for your comment on using force, think not that it was my intension to be forceful. Wether gay people are married or not is a matter of the populace's poor conciencious effort. My imput means nothing, and I don't care the outcome.
-
Ugh, I don't believe this. People fighting over trivial concepts based on ignorant beliefs... how little distance have we traveled? I find it hard enough to believe that people still believe in the bible much less that they can be so close-minded and willing to push themselves so hard over something so pointless. So to guys are married. Are you going to go to hell? No. So who cares? Jesus freaking christ, dude, how can we be so cruel to some people? Aren't our lives our concern? Can't we pull our heads out of our own ***** before shoving them up someone else's? Denial of basic rights... some people sicken me. By the way, what the hell happened to treating others the way you want to be treated?
