Bands You Love That None Of Your Friends Have Heard Of
2010DigitalBoy replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Noosphere

Aw, how cute, a thread for everone to prove how indie they are!
I'm hoping to learn about some new bands through this... To Leon: Thrice is actually fairly well-known :p To Jakehammaren: I listen to some death metal, long as it's good. I ought ask for some suggestions. Anyway, I know this band isn't 100% unheard of, as I was actually introduced to them via Billy Shears, but it's hard as hell to find any of their music aside from their 3 myspace/purevolume tracks. Plus their self released EP is sold out >_< Maps & Atlases - While I've only heard 3 of their tracks, I have already fallen in love with this band. Their 2 songs "Every Place Is A Home" and "Songs For Ghosts To Haunt To" are trademarked my maniachally fast tap guitaring. These guys are pretty lighthearted, but still great. They are truly like nothing I have ever heard before. Their third track "The Ongoing Horrible" is a more calm song with only an acoustic guitar played over a sweet as drum -- or rather what sounds like someone hitting wood blocks. M&A are very unique and inteesting, so they are worth checking out. If I were to compare them to a more mainsteam band... I'd say they'd be related to Rush, but no more than a distant cousin. -
A lot of us here on OB are into a lot of non-mainstream bands, and some of them are really great and deserve far more attention than they get. Pears & Brass - Combining blues and rock into what I would describe as Tool meets Wolfmother, P&B is a brilliant and dark rockin 3-man band with a heaping helping of talent. The CD that I have, The Indian Tower, is comprised of 11 tracks, 2 being acoustic. Most P&B songs revolve around 2 or 3 complicated riffs being played throughout the song. The guitar and bass are both quick and heavy, and the riffs are guaranteed to be stuck in your head after a few listens. A few go-around with this CD and you'll be humming them everywhere you go. The singer has a great voice, although you can rarely understand what he's saying. I searched all over google but I couldn't find any lyrics sites with this band, but I know that one of their songs is about a graveyard outside the city where the local trees have become sick of people burrying their dead there so they use their roots to fling the bodies into the air and break them to pieces, letting the plants carry them away. Now that's cool. The entire CD has a bluesy vibe to it especially in certain tracks. The 2 acoustic tracks are both brilliant and chillingly creepy. This CD deserves a listen from any rockers out there looking for a new, funky, great band to listen to.

There is no particular place I want to be. Sure, I'd probably prefer to live in Japan or Brittain or Australia, but I don't really have any goals adhering to those places. Moving to one of them would cause way more frustration than solutions. I guess if there would be a place I want to be it'd be in a studio or on tour making music, but until I have a band this is merely an aspiration. I'm working, though.

Im increadibly angry that it's ending now. I wanted it to end a year ago >_> YES Inuyasha is FINALLY over!!! Look, I'm not going to lie - two years ago I thought this was the coolest show ever. I have a manga volume and a T-shirt even! But MAN did they ever drag this show out! Curse you Rumiko Takahashi! Okay. When Inuyasha first started, it had a lot going for it. It had the whole action/adventure thing down, it had it's little quirks and jokes. Miroku was the funny pervert monk, Sango was the hot-headed demon slayer, and Shippou was adorable. While I thought the show began to go downhill the minute the hunt for Naraku took precedence over everything, I still found it cool. Then as forty episodes turned into eighty, 3 moves turned into 5 (if I hear the words WIND SCAR! one more time...), and what began as exciting turned into monotonous. Miroku's feeling of women's ***** went from funny to not funny. Then, he falls in love with Sango and... hold on. Why is it that if they are in love, it only shows once every 20 episodes? If they were in love, wouldn't they always be in love? Blech. Sango's little brother is annoying as well because he can always use her in the same way. The relationship between Inuyasha and Kagome never seems to pick up. They went from hate to love, but over the course of about 150 episodes why the hell arent they together yet?! Shippou was alright at first, but now the only attention he gets is in one of his little episodes where he invariably meets up with another tiny little demon guy. For the rest of my complaints, see my post in 'What Do You Like/Dislike In Anime' I'm SO glad this show is ending.

First let me notify that I am a hardcore skeptic about most spiritual things, but if it appears to be true, I don't see why it wouldn't be. My father is a very spiritual man. Not really a christian at all, but he definitely has beliefs which tie into Christianity. My dad, whom I trust as he is a very honest man, claims to be able to astral project. There have been multiple times where he will sit on the couch in silence reading a book and then close his eyes and go into a trance-like medetative state. Once when he came out of this state after about 20 minutes I asked what he had been doing. He told me that he was astral projecting himself and I think he said something about something across the world. Then he claimed to have seen me in the future (though Im fairly certain he was making fun of me at that part.)
PLUS, if anyone still doubts why the genre is sucking now, off the top of anyone's head, which actors have done voice work for Robots or Over The Hedge? How many can you name? Now which actors did voice work for Pixar's The Incredibles or Monster's Inc? I don't know about you guys, but I sure as hell remember the voice actors in Pixar films a hell of a lot better than any of the other studios'.
I know Robots had that one dude from all those boring comedy movies, and Over the Hedge has Steve Carell who is kewl. I dunno about the other two... but that's not relevant really >_< I think CG has just become the new animated movie. Since the CG wave came about, there has yet to be an animated movie in american theaters that I can remember. After the success of Finding Nemo (amazing movie, BTW) and Shrek all the other guys saw a bandwagon and didn't hesitate to hop on. I agree that back when CG was 't3h shiz' with Toy Story and pretty much only Pixar doing them, things were much better. Also, the only CG movies that really got popular were the Disney ones... there were a few others that were good but not all that popular (I liked ANTZ...) but now CG is the thing so it gets attention. The way I see it, the abundance of crapy CG kids movies is the same as the abundance of crappy animated kids movies. Kids movies just have a hig tendency to suck because what kids find funny, we find 'trite and annoying' Of course, the studios still suck for making these movies. It's always a cast of animals doing something dumb, usually in the human world. There's always one animal that's in abundance, one that's cute and does silly things, and a large cast of lame charachters. The worst part is the way they grab desperately onto the coattails of the movie before them. The Wild was a direct copy of Madagascar. And, because of all the damn penguins in Madagascar, we now have to deal with Happy Feet. In any event, there are still some good ones which sneek in just like with live action movies. I don't know if it counts, but there was A Scanner Darkly, and The Increadibles was great as well.

I hold this show in extremely high regards and wish I didn't miss it so often. What makes this show great it that is is ACTUALLY random. It's not anime fangirl random or weird goth kid random, it's ganuinely completely and utterly random. You never know what the hell is gunna pop out of that yello afro next... anything can happen! I know a lot of people say anyone could come up with this stuff, but really they can't. Anime fangirls and weird goth kids are brilliantly evident of this! Another thing I love about this show is that there is constant action. They don't get into long talks, silences, or anything. Things are constantly moving and they clear opponents (sometimes multiple) in a single episode. I love it.

Anime Any anime character look-a-likes? ^.^
2010DigitalBoy replied to kyandi's topic in Otaku Central

I Don't know who I look like but I know I act like Naruto alot & I have stuipd yet funny moments like Bo-Bobo as well.
Well, that's really no help XD I can't honestly say I look like an anime character since they're beautiful, smooth, perfect, and awesome (sorry... inferiority complex) but if I were to animate myself (edit out the acne and straighten my hair) I'd look like... I dunno. Maybe I could pass for Generic Faceless Hentai Guy XD Personality wise, though, I am a carbon copy of Shinji from NGE. -
What's your geekiest purchase?
2010DigitalBoy replied to vegeta rocker's topic in General Discussion
Oh dear god... I never realized I was such a nerd till I read this thread!!! And what's worse, ALL of this is on display in my room! In response to the opening post, I bought some of the Fullmetal Alchemist Philosopher's Elixer... what they did to my taste buds is as much a sin as Ed's transmutation XD As far as figurines go, I've got 2 from Hellsing despite not being much of a Hellsing fan, 2 from Eva, a little Veritech which came with Robotech Box 2, and Kevin fom Sin City. >_< I've got a pencil board for Haibane Renmei and I haven't even watched the whole DVD yet! I've had it for 2 years! As a matter of fact, I have a few DVDs I haven't watched yet (just finally got around to vol. 1 of Rahxephon yesterday) I have some extremely nerdy comics. I have some Gundam Wing volumes, the first volume of the new Teen Titans, Duel Masters, and Cardcaptors Sakura from a free comic day a while ago along with some volumes of Super Manga Blast. A while ago I saw volume 1 of a Mortal Kombat comic and HAD to have it. Quite possibly THE nerdiest thing I own though is several Pokemon comics. Namely one which I bought recently, Pokemon Mystical Journey... that's right a children's shojo manga about Pokemon. I own just about all the FF games despite not having beaten a single one. I haven't beaten most of my games... I just had to get all those frikkin RPGs... I have the Wario and Diddy Kong plushies on my dresser situated near a slew of game booklets, traading cards of all sorts (I try to get at least one pack of every game) and other little nerdities. I have the soundtrack for .hack//LEGEND OF THE TWILIGHT and the Rurouni Kenshin Best Theme Collection, both slightly nerdier than FLCL OST Volume 3. Some of this stuff may not sound nerdy, but I think it is. -
Funny, just yesterday I read an article about healing with prayers in Skeptic Magazine. They had 2 groups of people with similar medical conditions. The control group was monitered but kept normal while the second group was informed that people would be praying for them (and they were). As it turns out, both groups were very close with ever so slightly more complications in the variable group (though not enough to consider it a result without retrial.)

kewl. The answer to this should be easy for anyone who does a little background check. My Four Facts: 1. My favorite band is Type O Negative 2. My name comes from an anime 3. My favorite instrument is the bass 4. I have 1 younger brother

I like my Japanese class. I'm not particularly good at Japanese, in fact I'm struggling to not fall behind (I was extremely lucky to make it into Japanese 2). The reason I like my class is the vibe. A large percent of the students are passionate about learning it, and some of them are otaku as well. I love that I can get along with any person in that class easily and have been able to spark conversationss with some from thin air, which is cool. This year I have an awesome teacher and she's honestly and truly devoted. Her entire life seems to be essentially based around teaching, and I like that. Plus she's fun, but not overly leniant. English class is a second option. i don't like it, and i find it boring, but I am damn good at it. Last year I could swear my teacher wanted to marry me and this year I've already deemed that I'm prolly the best English student in there (I dont mean this as an insult, but I pride myself in knowing that Im good and have worked to be good.) Of course, I have a high tendency to break the rules when it comes to essays and get way off topic (which last year was funny because my teacher kept complimenting my abilities, but giving me lower grades XD) Overall, I'd rather do anything than go to school. I hope to try and test out >_

I agree with Katana that death is certainly something that souldn't be joked about, but I'll be damned if a funny death joke and not laugh. I truly disgust myself. Personally, I don't think any kind of injury or pain or such should be laughed at. It's making light of someone's situation. It may be one thing if they themselves joke about it, but unless your close it shouldn't be done. For instance, anyone who doesn't know Steve Irwin or idolize him should not be making jokes about him, because it dishoners him and the ones who are in mourning for him. I feel bad even making racist jokes with anyone not of theat race. It just isn't right. But as I stated at the beginning, I DO make myself sick. (not that that makes it any better)

Anime What do you look for in an anime and what do you dislike in one?
2010DigitalBoy replied to Magus's topic in Otaku Central
Another thing I like is when there's an anime in which no one is safe. Wether it be death or just an emotional dismemberment, I love to watch my favorite chracters squirm. If an anime can get me to fall in love with it's cast, then force me to watch them suffer, that's when I know it's good. In Eva, when everything started to go mad, I was ready to pull my hair out and scream "GOD DAMMIT MAKE IT STOP!!!" The memories of
Asuka's mother forsaking her
were painful to watch as I felt my heart wrenching. When I am reding Death Note and
important characters die or disappear
I get chills thinking about it. Fullmetal Alchemist tears me apart.
Hughes' death was just plain sad. He died in such a real way, and the funeral....
:animecry: What I HATE is shows like FRIKKING INUYASHA where you have them fighting through 160 episodes and no one is dying! Miroku, Sango, Shippo, and Kagome have NO right to still be alive. They are all weak, all just sit there, and all should be long dead. Another thing I hate is when people have conversations while fighting. Either they have no intentions to kill the other person, or their just dumb, because even if the opponent DID take the words to the afterlife, he wouldn't be able to hear everything if you killed him too early. Any time theres a fight conversation, expect it to be dragged out. -

he kills L somewhere between chapters 60 and 70 thank you for your time. -goes into a corner and mourns for L-

... you need to die. *pulls out Death Note* j/k I just got volumes 1-6 over the past few days, and I'm on the edge of my seat for what will happen next! This manga always keeps the adrenaline going! During the first volume and the first half of the second volume I couldn't stop reading simply because of Lights awesome planning. The way he hides Death Note and the way L tricks him are both great. I found the part with the fiance to be kinda boring, but after that it jumped back into the fray with the crazy door and the cameras (attempting to remain ambigous so that even without tags, no one gets spoiled) Most of volume 3 was kind of boring for me mostly because I had a headache and itt kept groing. It was like L and Light's eccessive amounts of thinking were intruding in my thinking and it was crazy. Plus I was mad that they
weren't showing Ryuk nearly as much and that was sad.
The entire end part with Sakura TV, though, was purely awesome and one of my favorite parts so far. It was so sudden and so crazy and when
Light's dad crashed the armored car into Sakura TV
things were off the wall! Misa-chan is probably my favorite character because she's cute and she's so devoted to Light-kun and other reasons I won't say. It was in volume 4 that I began to utterly hate Light-kun. Firstly because he
continuously blows off Misa-chan.
I actually am glad he does that because it reinforces his character as a super-genius villain, but still... I love Misa-chan. Then when Light
burns the Death Note I was mad because Ryuk was gone and isn't in 5 or 6!
Light's plan to
forfeit his position as Kira
was genious and just adds to the scale of his plans and his genious. I loved these volumes but it kind of bugged me how
Light still has so little interest in Misa-chan and won't even give her at chance or at least go on a date with her.
Also
something about the way Misa had changed so much after the memory loss, at least in my mind, didn't seem right.
Maybe I'm just picky. The chase scene at the end of Volume 6 was great. I love that
a plan actually went off without a hitch and how three of the board members got a little more personality.

I'm going with the scars. It just seems way to specific to be something you just came right up with. I could be wrong, though. #1

Ratings, Violence, Responsibility
2010DigitalBoy replied to vegeta rocker's topic in General Discussion
If parents are smart, their kids will be smart. What you see on TV isn't what alters you, its how your parents react to it. If parents say violnt TV is bad or restricted, it only makes kids want to watch it more. The type of parents who restrict things like that tend to be the kind that don't get along with their kids, and so the kids want to diobey them. (WARNING: That was a sweeping generalization) At the same time, if parents don't teach their kids that the thing their role-models do is wrong, there's nothing stopping the kids from watching it. It all comes down to good parenting, something which is rather rare (or accidental, which is sort of my parents' case XD) TV doesnt warp your kids. It may get them interested in crazy stuff, but your parents have control over how far those interests go. My youngest brother grew up when my bro and I were into Anime and watched movies like Kill Bill with him, so it's natural he would like to see blood and swords and want to use one, but he knows better and would sooner tell me or my mom that he found a weapon than pick it up. -
I agree with Miss Japan_86 on this one, except in the terminology of 'maturity'. All the things she said detail to me a great person... a 'real' person as I would suffice to call them. What I question, and I don't mean to say that your definition is incorrect as I am no one to judge that, is if this meets the requirements of the term 'mature.' I do not know the dictionary definition of mature, but I know that it is used in many contexts. The mere fact that people can have their own opinions of the word, which also means that it has a moldable definition, means that it cannot truly be defined. If someone uses it in any context other than it's true definition, it should not be correct. In fact, I think the world would be a better place if the word 'maturity' were just obliterated altogether. But that's an issue for the category of 'language' not of 'life'. If asked my 'definition' of the word 'maturity', ignoring the fallacy of language, mine would match hers. EDIT: rereading your post, you didn't actually ask for her 'definition' so sorry if it felt like an attack ^^;; still, though, the misuse of the word is a pretty big issue with me... almost as much as the horrors the word 'irony' has undergone (which, in it's own respect, is an irony within itself)

Anime What Do You Think of This Anime Dub Theory?
2010DigitalBoy replied to serenayasha's topic in Otaku Central
Depends on the voices, really. It doesn't matter if it's English or Japanese, if a voice is bad, a voice is bad. When I first got into anime I always watched them in Japanese because people were so complacent about English voice actors. Nowadays I watch them in English and I have yet to have any complaints. I hate to see a character with a voice that doesn't fit them. It's not so much the pitch that matters -- a lot of anime give squeaky voices to timid people, deep voices to bad guys, yelling people to main characters, and just slap the rest on every other cliche. All that matters is that the voice portrays the character who they are supposed to be. If it's someone who is always shocked or overreacts a lot, they need to sound excited. If someone has a lot of presence and makes themselves noticable, it should show (I don't remember who it was, but in something I saw recently the villain was an attention hog, but he mumbled all his words!). A lot of the time I hate the voice actors in both versions because they don't sound like how I thought they would while reading the manga XD I still have my reservations about anyone hired by 4Kids. One Piece has by far the worst English cast of any show ever. EVER. And Naruto... his voice actor has gotten better I think, I know longer want to put a hole in his throat. -
Sometimes my brother and I are really lazy and we decide not to do our chores for long periods of time (like this past summer). When this happens, we don't have any money of course. At times this can be dangerous. If one of us sees something that we want, we may do a week or two of chores to be able to get it, but every so often something big comes up that we know will take a joint effort and a lot of cash. In these cases we will reapply ourselves to our work while simultneously change collecting. This exercize is simply amazing - seriously, just look around your house, in your dryer, in your couch, gather all the change, and put it in one of the cash makers at Farm Fresh or Food Lion. Last time we managed to gather 40 bucks in 2 days.

Another favorite band of mine is a little-known band known as Bad Acid Trip (if anyone showed up early at Ozzfest, they were the really crazy bastards.) They only have one CD out as of yet, and the only reason I've heard of them is because my family parents are friends with them. BAT are close friends of System of a Down and just about any SOAD tour will open with them. Their CD Lynch The Weirdo is easily described by the album's subtitle, Energetic Bursts of Psychopathic Fury. All of their music is fast, their songs are short (17 tracks in 32 minutes) and there is a lot of screaming. The guitars are zany, out of control, and skillful. They have a very trippy, psychadelic feel as the name would suggest. Perhaps the best part of their performance is the lead singers voice, which is sometimes screaming but sometimes takes a hilariously stragne deep voice. It sounds like 2 different people are singing, but it's in fact one really weird dude. The lyrics of their songs, though barely telligeble and sung at sometimes super-speed are always political, satyrical, funny, and strange. They are also very sexual and the album art agrees. A good comparison would be to put GWAR on acid, play it in fast forward, and dump a pan of political paint on it.

Writing O' Brother not another, OB parody! [PG-13-LS}
2010DigitalBoy replied to Aberinkula's topic in Creative Works
Obviously, I have no idea who any of these people are, so my review may not be as biased. For starters, I am often a fan of randomness in comedy, but only TRUE randomness. Your story was okay, but fell into the pits of far to many cliches. For instance, I love it when a character talks to an inanimate object and thinks it's alive, but it's been done a million times; so unless your writing is truly hilarious, it's just another talking inanimate object. Most of your story was, in my opinion, just another random story. It wasn't total crap, but it was no Bobobo-bo bo-bobo. As for the issue of whether or not you should parody characters you don't know, it's a double edged sword. On the one hand, if you dont know them, you can't properly parody them. On the other hand, like Lady Asphyxia pointed out, people don't care if they aren't in it. The only conclusion is to just not write an OB parody XD -
I really liked The Iron Giant and was rather disappointed that Cartoon Network ended their short-lived tradition of playing it non-stop for one day once a year. The movie wasn't really special in any way, but at the same time it was rather well-written. It didn't have any rediculous humor, it didn't try to act deeper than it was, it was just a simplistic and easily watchable movie. Plus, I must've memorized every line by now... I love the part when the kid drinks coffee and starts talking really fast. It was a clever method of revealing his character in a quick, comedic fashion. As for the last movie I saw.... Teen Titans: Trouble In Tokyo was the last one I saw. Coming into this movie the first thing I was scared of was how the Japanese culture would be treated. I was very pleased with the way it was done. Tokyo looked like the big city it is and the countless neon signs were written in actual Japanese. What overwhelmed me was joy was that for the most part, the Japanese people ACTUALLY spoke Japanese, albeit fairly basic. I hated how the main bad guy was named Brushogun but at least it wasn't so bad. The main story was that a Japanese criminal named Psychotech attacks Gotham City and before disappearing, he gives the name of his commander - Brushogun. The Titans head for Japan (Beast Boy, being a manga fan, thinks of it as a vacation and hopes to pick up some hot Japanese chicks XD). When they arrive, Tokyo is dealing with a Godzilla knockoff which is captured by the Japanese super-troopers. Their commander tells them to drop the case as Brushogun is merely legend and the super-troopers can handle it. The team decides to go on vacation instead, but Robin is still sure somethings goin down. Things get bad when Robin apparently kills Psychotech. That's all I will reveal for now. There were 2 crowning moments in this movie. The fist is when Beast Boy chases a hot Japanese girl around (she calls him otaku and he thinks it means hes cute XD) and he ends up in a karaoke bar. He gets on stage and begins brilliantly belting out the most horrific translation of the Titans theme ever. The best part was the lyrics "Thunder, lightning, earthquake... dad!" The second part is when Robin beats up a yakuza member, takes his clothes and transforms into a total badass then steals a motorcycle and perfectly re-enacts a scene from Akira. That's gold.

The most recent video game purchase I made was Dead Rising for the XBOX 360. This game is astounding. Zombies are one of my favorite monsters (they're all the rage right now, almost as popular as pirates or ninjas) and killing them is always a joy. In the past, I was unattracted to zombie games because they usually involved a reticle and the second most cliche weapon in all of video gaming. Dead Rising allows me to creatively kill myriads of zombies with myriads of weapons. What I truly love about this game, though, is the psycopaths! Each of them has a unique battle and are demented in their own ways. The Vietnam War veteran was just freaking scary. Plus, this game adheres to my love of grousome and freakish deaths. For example, when you bring down
Adam the Clown, he falls forward onto his mini-chainsaws and you get to watch the blood fly as they carve into his stomach.
Sick.
