My friend and I were bored last night, so we went up to BlockBuster and rented this movie and Secret Window, both of which I've wanted to see for a long time but never got the chance. We watched The Butterfly Effect first, and I'm hoping to see Secret Window tonight before we have to turn it back in tommorrow. An interesting thing to note, though, is that I'm only 16 and they never asked for ID on an R-rated movie, lol (probably because of that beard that I haven't been shaving

About 15 minutes ago I checked my Comcast On Demand anime line-up, and low and behold, they had RahXephon the movie. I'm taping it downstairs right now, and would be watching it, but South Park weekend starts at 9:00, which I have to tape as well since my friend wants me to go to his house and play DDR. Do you think they sell the pamphlet that comes with it, seperately? XD

Anime Cartoon Network Line-Ups...and anime on television announcements
Syk3 replied to Syk3's topic in Otaku Central
Yeah, I saw the skit too, lol, and I was wondering where I might post it if I was to post about it at all, but this seems like the obvious choice now. I thought it was awesome, naturally. :p After the guy's rant, Conan was like: "I'm sure the two or three Cowboy Bebop fans out there know exactly what you're talking about." Greg: "That would be me. " Otherwise, though, I think they were aiming to appease to a very small audience and leave everyone else confused. As for the rant in particular, I already have the Bebop DVDs, and haven't seen Case Closed, so I have really no opinion on the matter. He was probably a little harsh toward Case Closed, though. He had said that it was horrible animation, but obviously it was most likely created years ago. -
First banner..? not bad..! alot better than my first one..! that was a crap..!lol!
Please put a lot more effort into your posts when critiquing artwork. Refer to the thread at the top of the forum.

I just got back from seeing this movie, and while it was a decent movie, anyone who's seen the commercials will be able to predict pretty much the entire movie. Other than a few things that don't largely impact it, it was a very predictable move.
One guy soley believes that the robots are going to rebel, no one believes him, and then they do. They even had the generic misunderstood-purse-nap, and using an old fairy tale to solve the mystery (in this case, Hanzel and Gretyl). There were a few parts that even reminded me of a more serious version of the South Park episode when the guy uses all of this irrelevent information to come to some crazy conclusion. Haha, that episode was pretty funny. ^.^
The story takes place in Chicago in the year 2035, and right from the start, you can tell that they most likely overdid the "futuristic" technology aspect. It's about a homicide detective with a grude against robots (Will Smith) who is trying to solve the death of one of the top engineers for USR (which I'm assuming is United States Robots; I don't remember them telling you for sure). Everyone is sure that this is a suicide, but Will Smith's character believes that a robot is resonsible, which no one is willing to accept because it conflicts with the three Laws of Robotics, laws that are programmed into all robots from the start (put in a condensed version because I can't remember them exactly, lol): 1. A robot may not harm a human being. 2. A robot must obey all orders given by a human, unless it conflicts with the first law. 3. A robot may defend itself, unless it conflicts with the first two laws. But as my brother pointed out to me after the movie, that doesn't stop a robot from stealing if given an order to, much less break any of our other laws, lol. So if you plan to see this movie, it's good, but don't expect to be too surprised at what happens, lol. One thing I did like, however,
was how instead of the robots choosing to disobey these laws and starting a revolution for their freedom, or something, they were ordered to by a computer that.. well, supposedly had good intentions for ordering such. ;p
Has anyone else seen it yet?

Anime Otakon 2004, Anime Weekend Atlanta 2004 & other conventions
Syk3 replied to Syk3's topic in Otaku Central
In response to Syk's first post: Anime Expo 2004 broke the 20,000 mark, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if Otakon did as well (isn't Otakon traditionally the larger of those two cons?).
I would have thought that Anime Expo would be bigger, considering that it takes place in a much more populated area, I believe, and also because Japan is right across the Pacific. I could be wrong, though; there's no denying that Otakon is pretty big. It's a shame that you aren't going to be attending the con, Dagger. It would have been cool to see another mod there, heh. ^_^ -
Anime Otakon 2004, Anime Weekend Atlanta 2004 & other conventions
Syk3 replied to Syk3's topic in Otaku Central
Well, I'm not fat or sweaty. ;) I think it's fun to see all of the people who cosplay as anime or video game characters that you can recognize, and it's an added bonus that you're in a room full of people who share similar interests to you. The main reason I go to the con, though, is because of all of the different booths and stuff, the anime that they show, the new releases information, and the dealer's room. I had fun last year, and I hope to have as much fun this year as well. -
The only other short-episode anime that I can think of at the moment is.. .. Colorful. :o If you know anything about the show, you'll know that it was created primarily for straight guys, as it sets out to show men's fantasies of women during an ordinary day. We actually watched it in anime club one time, and all of the girls were huddled in the back complaining about it the whole time, and eventually just left, haha. It kind of sounds like the same sort of premise that Mouse is, from what you've mentioned.

Anime Otakon 2004, Anime Weekend Atlanta 2004 & other conventions
Syk3 posted a topic in Otaku Central
I know people got pretty angry last year when I didn't mention anything about this con until after I went to it, so I wanted to make it up to you guys by posting early this year. >_< The Anime Weekend thread also reminded me of it *just realizes that the thread is really old, but that's besides the point o_o*, and if Dagger or Asuka or Solo wants to make one one big "Anime Con" thread, then that's cool, too. ^_^ The con is a lot earlier than it was last year, for those of you that went last year. I had the impression that last year, Otakon 2003 took place further in August. It's from Friday, July 30th to Sunday, August 1st, and takes place in the Baltimore Convention Center in (who woulda thought..) Baltimore, Maryland. Well, I went last year for a day, and after 11 hours of anime, I was really worn out. Not to say that it wasn't fun, just a lot of walking around, and this year I would have liked to go all three days, but, of course, I will be at the beach the first two. =_= Luckily they'll give out free stuff on the last day to make up for it. :p The convention center is packed with people, so if you hope to see someone there, except to set a meeting place or get their cell number, because otherwise you'll never find each other. Trust me, I went through that last year, and 11 hours is a long time to look for someone. They estimate that approximately 20,000 people will be at Otakon, and I hope they don't mean all at one time. O.o I wouldn't be surprised if they did though, haha. So if anyone wants to meet up, or can navigate through the website to find out the times of when it's open, that would be awesome. Maybe we can have some OtakuBoards group, or something. http://www.otakon.com/ EDIT: I almost forgot! The prices.. 3 Day Membership - $55 Friday Only Membership - $35 Saturday Only Membership - $40 Sunday Only Membership - $20 -
So basically this box set is a set with the movie and a 54 page booklet? $40 dollars is a little steep, I'd say, but then again, I'm used to buying those Hong Kong anime boxsets for like $25 for a 26 episode series. *shrug* I guess the question is, is the booklet worth $20? O_o Other than that, is there anything else you can tell us about the movie without spoiling what happens? :o
After watching the whole serie of Evangelion, I have to say I was really confused. The story is so good, but then around the 25th episode, everything starts to get confusing. I don't know if its just me or if other people are having trouble understanding. So I was wondering what some of you thought about Evangelion? Oh and my friend told me that the creator of Evangelion (I forget his name) had received threats from ppl saying that they would kill him if he didn't stop writing Evangelion, and so he did the ending fast. Is that true?
Evangelion is an anime that's often infamous for confusing most if not all of those who first watch it, and that's understandable. As the series goes through, different aspects of the story are revealed, and to get the whole picture it's best to watch it multiple times to see all of the information set in. If you have any questions, though, feel free to ask away and I'll try to answer them as best I can. As for the last few episodes, I had to review them on theOtaku and forced myself to understand them and write them in the most straight-forward way possible. Here are the links to these reviews, and I hope they help in some way: http://archives.theotaku.com/evangelion/episodes/episode25.shtml http://archives.theotaku.com/evangelion/episodes/episode26.shtml And I have no idea if people wrote death threats to the creator, lol.

Those are both way too big to be used on this forum, if that's what you intend. The banner max size is 500 x 100, and the avatar is 150 x 80.

Anime Cartoon Network Line-Ups...and anime on television announcements
Cased Close is a very good show. And you forgot about Duel Master it comes on at 6:00 p.m U.S. Central time on saturdays. I watch Cartoonnetwork everyday somtimes I watch it straight alll day. If anything new shows up I will be able tell ya'll. Ok bye, for know.
Geeze, I'm really out of the CN loop, lol. I also forgot to mention that these are Eastern/Pacific times. -
I know alot about this so i can almost answer any question about RAHXEPHON (The World Surrounded By Sound).
lol, you mean the world suffused with sound?
I guess it would make sense that Bahbem was a mulian, though, since he wanted the Mu to thrive.

My only question is, [spoiler'] why did Ernst Babhem choose Helena Babhem as a host to change bodies with? Did Ernst B. know that he was going to get shot and this was his plan all along to use Helena as a host like he possibly did in the past to other relatives? Plus why did Helena allow Babhem to take over her body since it didn't really give a reason for why she accepted him? This really confused me a lot and is still the one question i have left unanswered in the series.

He chose Helena to change bodies with because she offered to do so since she is the teacher's pet and likes to feel important. I don't think he can predict the future, he just has a knack for setting it up in such a way so that an outcome will occur. Of course, if this is the one thing that confused you, I doubt that I would know that answer, haha.
Just go ahead and make a new thread about it.
this sounds good, action packed anime, i havent heard of it until now, is it anything like what im used to (bebop, trigun, dragonball)? i think ill be checking it out.
Well coming from someone who's favorite anime is Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun is one of his top, I love Berserk. Can't say that I'm a fan of Dagonball, though.. anymore.
[spoiler']1. If I recall correctly, Ayato and Haruka first met on Nirai-Kanai (or somewhere very close by) when they were both fourteen. The two started dating when they returned to Tokyo. At some point shortly after this, Maya (Ayato's mother) realized that Haruka was beginning to have a greater influence over Ayato than she. Maya then triggered the sequence of events which would lead to the creation of Tokyo Jupiter; Haruka ended up being trapped outside the barrier. The sole purpose of Tokyo Jupiter was to create an environment where Ayato, the only remaining Ollin, could safely reach the age of 17 while remaining under his Mulian mother's power. All of his memories regarding growing up inside the dome are fake--Tokyo Jupiter has only existed for three years of Ayato's life. So Haruka did live in Tokyo when she was younger, and was stuck outside when it turned into Tokyo Jupiter.

So Tokyo Jupiter was only around for thee years? o_o Woah.. I guess that makes sense, because I would have expected that if Ayato was in there his entire life, everyone outside would be a lot older than they were. I was wondering about that a little, lol. How were the Mulians able to alter everyone memories like that? :/ Ah well, I guess that's not really a question that can be answered.

2. Ixtli appears as the person whom Ayato loves most, which throughout the series is a distorted memory of the fourteen-year-old Haruka. Consciously, he has no recollection of ever meeting or loving Haruka; subconsciously, she's still very much on his mind.

Hmm. I guess that makes sense, except how Haruka looks older than 14, lol.

3. Itsuki Kisaragi is the glasses-wearing doctor. He and Ayato are actually twins (I can't remember when this is revealed, though). While Maya kept Ayato, Itsuki was sent to be raised by the Foundation. The Foundation's goal was to prepare the world for the coming of an Ollin; through RahXephon, the Ollin has the power of a god and is capable of re-creating the universe as he sees fit. Bahbem and Maya wanted Ayato to make a world that would be dominated by the Mu. Meeting Haruka at the age of fourteen started a chain of events which eventually led Ayato to choose a human world instead. The Foundation did not create the Mu; Bahbem discovered them tens of thousands of years ago. RahXephon is partially based upon an old science-fiction novel called The Lost Colony of the Mu, which says that Atlantis actually existed and was populated by human-like beings known as the Mu.

*mixes this around in his head a bit* Why did Bahbem and the foundation want the Mu to rule the universe?

4. I'll try to answer this once I finish re-watching RahXephon. As of now, my best answer is that a great deal of their technology came from the Foundation.

I guess that makes sense. If the foundation provides money to TERRA like you said, it wouldn't be hard to believe to that provided technology as well. But if they gave them that kind of technology, then TERRA would know that they're in league with the Mulians, which they probably did anyway because the crazy guy had asked if they were going to do anything because he was from the foundation. But then why would they accept the technology and funding?

5. In episode 26, Ayato and Quon totally remade the world. It's almost like the ultimate happy ending--just about everyone ends up being close to the people they longed for in the other 25 episodes of the show. As for Quon's hair.... well, anime isn't known for its genetic accuracy.

Ah. Well the way you put it, remaking the world as they see fit, that kind of reminds me of Evangelion in End of Eva, and kind of like the Matrix, lol.

6. Bahbem learned a lot of tricks from the Mu. ^_^;; Many years before Tokyo Jupiter was even created, the Foundation began inserting dormant Mulians into the population, carefully arranging things so that by the time Ayato grew up, there would be plenty of people capable of controlling Dolems. I'm not sure whether Hiroko's red blood in episode 1 was an illusion, or if her blood (and, by extension, her species) changed after Ayato left Tokyo Jupiter.

So Ayato had to be this certain age for these events to take place? Ayato's blood was also red, but later in the series everyone was accusing him of being a Mulian and having blue blood. o_o

7. Only someone at the age of 17 can pilot a Xephon. Itsuki and Maya were capable of becoming Ollins, but they both ended up being far too old. Quon did use her abilities to act as Ayato's counterpart and help him tune the world; no one else other than those four have the requisite birth marks.

*looks up at his last response* Oookaayy.. *brushes that under the carpet* That's also like Eva in the sense that you have to be a particular age.

8. Children at the Foundation were classified as being either As, Bs, Cs or Ds (with Ds obviously being the least talented and promising). Itsuki and Helena were both Bs, while Makoto, their childhood companion, was a D. This affected him psychologically throughout his life.

I see. I think I understand now. He was the lowest talented and most like a normal person.
Wow, thanks for answering all of my questions. ^_^ You've cleared a lot of my confusion and that allows me to enjoy the series a lot more. You aren't off the hook yet, though, as I'm going to watch it again and come back with more! :p

I didn't see a topic for this anime in the thread directory, so I decided to go ahead and make this thread. It's only a half hour, sure, but the movie is rather impressive. For those of you who havn't heard about this anime, it was created by a man and his wife on their home computers (I'm assuming they had more than one) and took close to five years to make. The guy handed out bootlegged copies to his friends and such, and needless to say he soon got a huge contract with an anime company. It's so awesome, because he and his wife basically created this whole thing from scratch, and since there are only two main characters, and they're the only ones that talk, they both voiced their respective characters, haha. The story takes place in the future and follows a young couple, split by the tides of war. The girl chooses to join the military right out of high school to fight these invading aliens using high tech mechs, and the guy is left on Earth trying to live his life. Forcing them from the Earth's atmosphere, she helps the military persue these aliens to unknown planets and galaxies, keeping in contact with her boyfriend by text messaging through cellphones. Due to the time difference, however, it often takes years for the messages to arrive, and by that time the girl may have moved to a different galaxy. As you may have guessed, it's really a heart warming story as it examines how the couple deals with a really long distance relationship when they both very much love each other. I saw this anime in my school's anime club, but I might have missed a little bit of it when I went to get the pizzas from the front office. :/ The animation is absolutely steller, probably some of the best that I've seen in any anime. Due to the fact that it was made with technology that is not often used to make anime, however, some of the characters faces look slightly different than ordinary anime, the noses in particular. So who else has seen this anime, and what did you think?
-
Phew, I'm surprised that I haven't responded to this thread yet, consdering that I'm such a big fan of this anime. I saw it.. back in September, so bear with me on remembering it all, heh. Like I said before, I really love this anime, and was hooked from the first episode, which was probably the most action-filled first episode I've ever seen in an anime. Contrary to others in this thread, I thought that they did very well on the animation, and the backgrounds are some of my favorites, artistically, in any anime. People also generally believe Gutts to be absolutely heartless. Gutts has plenty of character, as revealed throughout the anime. His outer shell may be a hardened bad-***, but inside he can be very caring, which you can tell by his face when
he finally leaves the Band of the Hawk
. I suppose that one thing that I've found that people hated about this anime was the ending, which does a complete 180 in like the last five episodes. I, myself, was confused by it as well a little bit.
Like, how did they get back out of Hell? o_o
I'll tell you one thing, though. They did a great job of not answering some questions in the first episode until, literally, halfway into the LAST episode.
Okay, I must say that I completely disagree with you on Berserk. When I started watching it, I thought it was one of the corniest, horribly-drawn things ever.
Corniest and most horribly-drawn ever? O.o I usually think of corny to describe something that is overly dramatic and takes itself way too literally, and Berserk wasn't this way at all. None of the characters were overly emotional, and I felt that it was pretty down-to-earth for the most part. I, for one, loved the animation, especially the background which was like a sketchy sort of backdrop.
I don't know, I thought that the plot line was stereotypical and boring.
As for a stereotypical plotline, I haven't seen very many mercernary animes so in that aspect it was kind of original. But it wasn't typical mercernary, either, and included demons and such, plus while you normally find someone who vows never to kill anyone, you have Gutts who is this bad *** and isn't afraid to kill people.
I thought that Gatts was annoying, and just way too macho. I mean, really, they made him win anything and everything.
Gutts was macho, sure, but I've seen way too many animes where there is this skinny person who is stronger than everyone else. When you get strong, you grow muscles. That's what happens. And if you haven't seen the whole series, you really can't say that he wins anything and everything, can you?
The music was actually good. Yes, very good music. And the outtakes were funny too. I don't know, I've heard that the anime gets better as the series progresses, but I got so sick of the first couple episodes that I stopped watching it. Should I continue? Not to mention, I heard the ending was..gory? or very..not suitable for young children.
Yeah, the music definitely was enjoyable. It had that creepy sort of air to it that you have to hear to know what I'm talking about. o.o I liked the anime all the way through, so I would say that the anime stays good as it progresses, but I don't know if you'd like it. *shrug* But yes, the ending was pretty gory, and not suitable for younger audiences.
Especially when Gutts cut his arm off so he could resque the naked lady. o_o

The first episode--I watched it again after I saw the others--is alarming to me, because I still haven't gotten to see how exactly those events come about. I like Griffith . . . and I don't want anything terrible to happen to him. (Well, nothing more [/i']terrible.)
Yeah, even after going back to the first episode after watching a couple more really allows you to catch a lot more information, and keep you wondering what happens for the series to get to that point.
-
I just finished watching RahXephon once through, and I must say, I am.. confused out of my mind. Like Lain, this is definitely one of those series that you are not going to understand by just watching it once. I already have plans on watching it through again while taking notes on all the characters (God DAMN, I cannot remember all of those names!), and writing down questions throughout the series and seeing it I can answer them by the end.
I just don't understand a lot of it. Like how, if Mishima was the past version of Haruka, how could she be in Tokyo and outside at the same time? What significance did the past version have? Was it just that Mishima was the form that Ixtli chose to appear in? I cannot seem to remember who Itsuki Kisaragi was, but when did they mention that he was Ayato's younger brother, and how do you know that Ayato's mom came from the foundation? o_o And what, exactly, was the purpose of the foundation? Why are the kids special, and what can they do? Did the foundation create these Mu beings from the start? How did TERRA have the ability to create "Tokyo Jupiter-like" fields? How did Ayato and Haruko grow up to have Quon when first of all, Ayato had merged with the RahXephon, but also Quon had already been born years ago, and how does a baby with those parents have red hair?! And how does Bahbem live for so long by switching bodies? How are Mulians able to act as the robots without even knowing it (referring specifically to the case of Hiroko)? Why didn't we ever get to see any other Xephons if so many other Ollins had the insignia on their stomachs? What did Isshiki mean when he said that he wasn't a D? D as in the D1s that the RahXephon's fought?
Phew. That's it for now, but I'll probably think of other questions later. Seeing that so many on the forum are bringing Evangelion into the discussion, I will say this, considering that I've seen the entirety of both series: RahXephon and Eva both have very different appeal. Evangelion is an anime that focuses on a very realistic aspect of what the future may hold. The expressions on the characters faces will show you that the artists did their best to mirror reality. They show you how the pilots enter their Evas, how the Evas have enough power to operate be it by electrical cord or limited battery power, and how the pilots are connected to their Eva to feel the pain that the robots are. RahXephon, on the other hand, felt much more.. cartoony and unrealistic. I know, I know, anime doesn't have to be realistic, and sometimes it's better when it isn't, I'll agree, but for some of the things that they were trying to do with this series, a little more of a clear-cut, oh-that-makes-sense explanation really would have helped. How did Ayato enter the RahXephon? Oh, obviously he floated through some magical light into the center. o.O Where did the power for the "mech" come from?
Oh, it's a God.
And are the pilots really connected to it?
Well, other when Ayato merged with it at the end
, they never really explain whether they can feel the pain or not, because the RahXephon barely got injured, if at all. o_o As for the goofy, cartoony expressions and animation, I loved it and couldn't get enough of it because it just felt so.. fresh. Other than the animation, though, I must say that overall I liked Evangelion a lot better because it made much more sense. The more my head throbbed at trying to understand what was going on in RahXephon, the more Eva seemed so appealing.
Anyway though i just bought the first DVD of this even though it was my third choice of a new series to buy, and i was quite impressed. I dont usually like mobile suit type anime series, since i dont like the fighting that much. Nonetheless i loved the plot in this anime, it really is like the Matrix which someone stated early along with a little bit of the Noir/Cowboy Bebop type anime in the sense the main character Ayato needs to find out about his past. Even though i have only seen the first DVD and only the dubbed version of it, i think after watching the whole series ill go back and watch it subbed as well.
Congratulations! Through that entire paragraph of describing RahXephon, you never once mentioned Eva. :D
On a side note, Ayato is one of the most likeable characters I've ever come across. He has his angsty moments, but for the most part, he's just a nice, polite, ordinary guy. The reason I mention this is because so many people compare RahXephon to Evangelion--but isn't Shinji a lot more whiny?
Yeah, that's one good thing about RahXephon. Ayato is a lot more bad-*** than Shinji, that's for sure.

I just hope the ending's slightly more clear-cut and less depressing than Eva's.[/spoiler']
Poor, poor Solo. :(
[spoiler']Does anyone know why Mishima's hair was lighter than Haruka's--could the director have done that simply so people wouldn't make the connection immediately?

I had the impression that Haruka's hair was a lot bluer, compared to Mishima's brown hair. But I guess that's besides the point. :o
Anime Cartoon Network Line-Ups...and anime on television announcements
Syk3 replied to Syk3's topic in Otaku Central
hey syk3 does this mean that they're cancelling case closed or did you forget to put that in the listings?
I'm sorry about that, I was only adding shows that I thought were anime, and I didn't know that Case Closed was an anime. >_< No, I don't watch Cartoon Network often, which kind of makes me wonder if I've forgotten anything else.. -
I guess it depends who you ask. All of my friends love anime and video games and all that, but those are just the kind of people that I choose to hang out with. My school has an anime club, and we get a decent amount of people at every meeting (a little over 10 at least, I'd say). So in that regard, we do have people where I live that are really into anime, but for the most part when you mention anime, people will judge it as: a. Only for little kids. b. Only for perverts. c. Similar to the anime that they sometimes notice on TV (i.e. not very good, lol) What they don't realize is that they're judging it as animation first, film second, rather than the other way around. But if they don't care about taking the time to properly judge it, then I don't care about what they think. :p So overall, it really isn't that popular, at least in my school, but I don't let it bother me.
-
I'm sure that I've answered this question before in a really old thread, but I can't seem to find it and I might as well share my experience with those of you who are newer to the forum. I first started watching anime.. I suppose it was around the beginning of 6th grade, so I was 10 or 11. My friends had gotten me into these cards that, at the time, didn't cost much, and were fun to collect. We didn't really know how to play an actual game with them, or at least I didn't, and I slowly learned what anime was through these cards. No, they weren't Pokemon cards; they were AniMeyhiem Dragonball Z cards, and right now I have way more than I know what to do with. O_o This was back when Cartoon Network first started showing Dragonball Z on Toonami, and interest in these cards of course led me to feel the need to watch the show as well. For the next 3 or 4 years, I was absolutely obsessed with DBZ, but still had a casual interest and respect for other anime. My obsession with DBZ led to drawing the characters constantly, and while searching on the internet for a picture to draw I found these boards. In 9th grade, I began attending my school's anime club, which introduced me to numerous animes, and I ended up losing nearly all of my interest in DBZ. From there, the rest is history, I guess.
