I just realized the interesting wording: the "absence" of having sex is something you can "lose," instead of gaining sex or something like that.
I think that would be more along the lines of the loss of (purity and) innocence than it would be the loss of the absence of something. Also, "having sex" cannot be present, so it cannot be absent either. (This is just me being semantic about gerunds.) With such a perspective, one could then view virginity as the time when they are not having sex, rather than the point up until which they have it or have had it. Virginity is not so much the absence of as it is the physical ignorance of sex; the naïvety towards it, if you will.

It just occurred to to me: why is this event titled "Smells Like Team Spirit"? Strange choice of words.... Anyway, I have a really cheesy idea for the adaptation (but honestly, did you expect any less of me?) and I'll try to get some of it down later tonight after I finish some other essentials. Also, as I told Sandy in the main thread, I'll be completely out of commission starting Wednesday, probably until late Sunday evening. If you guys have anything specific in mind that you'd like to throw at me, tomorrow night's the last time I'll be able to do anything about it.

OOC: I'm sure I don't know. For my own excuse, I have been rather busy for the past week, so this was the first chance I got. ---------------------------------------------- A tall, cloaked man was moving swiftly and efficiently through the forest near the Validus stronghold, carrying a long halberd in his right hand. A sheathed sword hung from a red cloth sash tied around his waist. Though he wore thick riding boots, he made little sound as he maneuvered between various shrubs and deciduous trees. His unruly blond hair ruffled every now and then in sympathy to the occasional breeze, and his back was hunched over; he seemed to be focusing intently on the ground below and around him. He glanced upwards and froze. A large spiral spiderweb had materialized in front of him, reaching almost as high as his shoulders, and he stepped cautiously around the tree it was anchored to, looking for its spinner. The bright orange spider, about the size of a large pebble, had been hiding near one of the upper tether strandsâ??the man was thankful he had looked up when he had. Running into that little critter would not have been pleasant, and probably would have meant the immediate end of his expedition. Once clear of the trap, he continued on his way a little more cautiously, if no less swiftly. Upon closer inspection, the man could be recognized as one of the Validus' dragon riders, Tristan Lancaster. Tristan, despite appearances, was not actually tracking anything; if he had been asked why he was moving in such a manner, he probably would have simply replied "Habit." He would have then continued to say that he just did that naturally in forests, no matter the occasion or purpose. Then he would have dropped the subject. At length, he arrived at his destination: a good-sized clearing in the forest's interior. A layer of thin grass covered the ground, evidencing frequent use. This was where Tristan came to train almost daily; he preferred the natural quiet, and he had no use for practice dummies. They stood still. He hung his coat on the severed branch of a tree at the clearing's opposite edge and untied the sash around his waist, slinging the cloth over the branch as well and tying it securely in place. Tristan had cut off the branch himself when he had first started using the clearing, just after he had come to Kythira. The clearing had had a lot more grass back then, he reflected idly. Not that he wondered why. His halberd lay where he had dropped it, back in the clearing's center. Approaching it, he slid the toe of his boot under the weapon's staff and kicked it up sharply, catching it in his waiting hand. He instantly spun it to his left and right, planting himself firmly in a guarded stance usually used against cavalry. From this position he began an intricate series of cuts, lunges, and spins; his movements were precise and fluid, every successive stroke slipping cleanly into the next. His feet stepped confidently back and forth as he adjusted himself to the numerous imagined opponents all around him. Early afternoon sunlight poured into the clearing, and the rider was soon sweating hard. He almost appeared to be dancing, now whirling about, whipping the polearm over his shoulder and around his body, now throwing out a wide sweeping stroke and smoothly reversing direction. An occasional grunt or "Hah!" escaped him, accenting the sound of his hard breathing. After a good thirty minutes or so, Tristan stopped, his hazel eyes glittering with exertion. Walking back to where his coat hung, he withdrew a waterskin from inside it and set his halberd against the tree, sitting down with his back to the rough trunk. He rested there for a few minutes, drinking thirstily and looking at nothing in particular. When the waterskin was about half-full, he set it aside and retrieved his sword from its sheath, starting another similar session, with many graceful arcs and hand-switches. Tristan was not ambidextrousâ??in fact, he was decidedly right-handed, but an uninformed person watching him now would have thought otherwise. Years of practice had smoothed out his form, though they might not have granted him equal power in both hands. This time, he finished after only twenty minutes. He quickly took off his drenched shirt and stretched it out to dry in the sun, then decided that stretching out wasn't such a bad idea at that. The afternoon sun warmed him all over, and he soon drifted off. When he awoke, the first thing he noticed was the large blue dragon head staring intently at him. The second was that it was almost dusk. "Good evening, O Great Warrior," Lethe rumbled mockingly. "Welcome back to the land of the Living." "Bother the Living," said Tristan good-naturedly. "I was having a very good nap just now." "I noticed." The sapphire dragon nudged him to his feet. "Still training?" she asked. "No, I think I'm done for today." "Good." Lethe's deep blue eyes glanced searchingly around the clearing. "Where is your shirt?" Tristan sighed. "You're standing on it." The dragon raised her massive forelimb and peered underneath while Tristan rescued his trampled clothing. "At least it's pressed now," he quipped. He thought about putting it back on, but it was extremely dirty now, so he rolled it up and tossed it over to where his halberd leaned. He picked up his scimitar and retrieved its sheath, tying the sash back around his waist so that the sword hung down at hand level; with his long arms, he couldn't use a standard belt sheath without feeling like he had just elbowed someone behind him. He replaced the waterskin and donned his overcoat, then turned to his dragon. "So," he started, "would you mind taking me back?" Lethe snorted. "Do you need to ask?" ---------------------------------------------- OOC: So then. If any of you guy should happen to see calm, controlled Tristan walking around half-naked like it was nothing at all, feel free to have fun. (He's trying to get back to his quarters, for obvious reasons,so....)

The way taxes are supposed to work in an ideal system are to provide the government with the means to provide for its citizens commodities that they otherwise would find extremely difficult to supply individually. The citizens pay the government, and the government builds and maintains interstate highways, provides a militia, regulates interstate commerce, etc. Unfortunately, if no one wants to pay the government, it can't do anything. If you want a specific example, look at the circumstances of Shay's Rebellion, where the federal government was almost completely unable to resolve the situation mainly due to optional taxes. So then, if the government is to function for its citizenry, it must have a source of revenue (taxes), and must be able to secure such revenue. So yeah; jail time for tax evasion is suitable. You don't want to pay for your government's services, you don't get any. Note that I said ideal system. The issues of commodities in the jails and the budget deficit are meritable concerns, but they don't happen in an ideal system. They happen in life, which is what we work in. (And that's a whole 'nother lecture....)

I am sorry I haven't come by sooner than this; my time is rather restricted of late. (Boy, am I getting tired of saying that.) This one's flow is different than your other two; for a while I wasn't certain of what it was, but I think I know now. You used a great deal more dialogue in this excerpt, and your variations are natural-feeling, but I still have a couple of suggestions (and these are both a little nit-picky; otherwise I still like your stuff):

In every case where you specified a speaker, you use the same order: subject-verb. E.g., 'he said', 'I warned', 'Vincent purred', etc. Obviously, switching the order when using pronouns is ill-advised, being archaic and what ('said he'; come on! :animesmil), but you can still reduce some degree of monotony by using, for example, 'purred Vincent' or 'revealed my companion' or something like that. It keeps the first-grade primer feel out of your stuff.
Still on dialogue, you used almost every structural variant save one: speaker before words. (That isn't exactly what I wanted to say, but I couldn't think of anything else.) I think I actually spoke of this somewhere else...give me a minute...umm...where did I...Ah! Here it is. The third line is what I'm talking about.
Dylan approached his commander casually. "So, boss, you want we should take him down together?" he queried, nodding towards the arena's third occupant. "No," Jason responded, shaking his head. "It'll look suspicious if we both win; we'll have to fight each other." Dylan blinked. "You're joking." "I know this is weird, but we don't have many options. Just work with me on this one," requested the cyborg as he walked to where his given weapons lay.
Get the idea? It's just a timing thing, really. (Excerpt from one of my own thingies that's not quite finished yet.)
The only other thing I have is a small typo:
?The name alone exudes exhilaration. Imagine the kind of people that are going to be at the theatre,? he side,....
Oops. (^_^) Loved everything else. Sincerely. Especially the lion with the god complex that slowly gained power. You had me thinking Hurricane Hugo or something. And seeing things from Edwards viewpoint was nice; it put Vincent in kind of a childish light, instead of the drama king perspective. So, you said you weren't finished....? *nudge nudge*

Discuss Behind The Mask [Masked Agenda Underground]- [PG - LV]
Allamorph replied to 4815162342's topic in Theater
As far as the magic angle is concerned, what were you thinking of when you created the Judiciary? I understand the more limited nature of the general populace/good guys, and I like it, but I am uncertain of how and if I should incorporate magic into my character. Basically, I'm looking for a definite boundary, a point not to cross. (Aside from the obvious one of "within good measure", naturally.) -
Unfortunately, I give up when faced with such trying circumstances, so bring it on, big boy. I would very much like to see what you have 'got', as it were.[/SIZE']
Heh. Why am I not surprised? As you wish. I'll take my time, though; I want to savor this. Just remember: when it feels like absolutely no one is watching you, that's probably me. And like I said, no hard feelings. It's an honor thing.

Perhaps I should actually discuss this thread's topic, since I've already posted (spam!) twice now and what. I can't say as I have any favorite members. First off, I haven't been here long enough to merit having a 'favorites' list, but I don't usually play favorites anyway. That said, there are a few persons here that I like so far.... T-Man ? What can I say? Mafia = teh pwnzorz. Aaryanna_Mom ? I challenge anyone to come up with a single good reason not to like her. And should somebody do so, I will then hunt them down and kill them so hard they will die to death. :animesmil
...with no hard feelings, of course.
Clurr ? Damn, the chick can write. (I feel kind of weird for not having really interacted with her all that much, and then having her up here, but what have you.) [strike]Dragon Warrior ? Might as well. Heck, everyone else seems to be drooling over him.[/strike] :p Adahn ? We've butted heads a bit, but I like him anyway. I also wonder if he's going to blither his head off one of these days, the way he plays the Devil's Advocate. kalon ? ....
...we clicked.
Who's gotten popular? Couldn't say. I don't really pay attention to that stuff. ('Course, never IM-ing might have something to do with that....) Wait a minute. Did somebody mention me? Forgive me this quirk, but I'd have to be a little skeptical about that one; I have seen no evidence to support such a notion. Besides, the thought of a fan-following makes me a little nervous. (I generally do the following, and usually the person I'm following doesn't know it.) I do see several member echelons, if you will. You know, layers (cliqúes didn't feel right) of people that seem to kind of gel together. Like the RP circle: Matt, BKstyles, Vicky, Ozy J., etc. YOu get the picture.

Yeah, sorry about that. I'm not really good with spotting edits. (V_V) Okay, so now we need to pick a song to spoof. I am very much buggered today (spelling 'today' took four tries; both times), so my muse is only working part-time until further notice. Aside from that....
...but I'd prefer a catchy if a bit short song to a longwinded ballad.
Which means we absolutely have to use "Bohemian Rhapsody". I jest. Actually, I was thinking of "Hotel California"...or not. :p I need a nap. Perhaps I'll be able to be serious tonight. Until then, then. EDIT: Okay, I can't just throw a post down without at least trying to say something useful. I know this might sound a bit off-the-wall, but what about using Green Day's "Holiday"? EDIT2: Then again, perhaps something a little shorter and easier to go all Wierd Al on would be in order.
Would two weeks be generous enough?
Three would be better. Life is hurting me right now; I have huge concert Sunday, I'll be out for a studio trip starting Wednesday (until Saturday, I think), I have a recording project I'm working on, Residential Life is breathing down my neck about not having a roommate (while I was under the impression that that was their responsibility :animeangr), and to top everything off, the guys next door to me seem to be having late-night dorm gaming parties until around Early o'Dark in the morning. I won't be completely out of action, but neither will I be able to spend hours at a time brainstorming, as is my usual wont. This is all pending your discretion, of course. (The deadline, I mean.) I just want to make sure I can give my team something if they ask for it.

Judgment's Hound Name: The Hound's name is unknown; the Judiciary, even the Maestro, call the wraith only Hound, or The Hound when not speaking to it directly. Age: This is also unknown. Gender: Unknown Status: Self-styled Noble Faction: Judiciary Appearance: (given appearance) The Hound has never been seen wearing any garment except its Judiciary attire and its eerie, mouth-less mask. It looms over those around it; a large black tricorne hat rests ominously above the mask, presumably on the head of an actual person. The rest of The Hound is covered by great black robes that reach down to the floor and up past the mask on either side and in back, almost touching the tricorne's brim, billowing as The Hound moves. The Hound's feet are obscured, creating the illusion that it is constantly hovering; its hands are also hidden, though occasionally one will emerge from the folds of the black robes to retrieve a necessary scroll or parchment or some such item. On these occasions, the hand is always seen wearing an opaque white glove. Personality: The Hound is taciturn, speaking tersely only if directly addressed, and even then it only unfailingly responds to the Maestro's orders; it will ignore other members of the Judiciary if it does not see that a response is mandated by the situation. It does not socialize, only appearing with the others at certain public functions, and then it is still almost completely silent. The Hound always stands against the wall with the greatest degree of shadow present. There are two Pharoah's Hounds that sometimes accompany it. The Hound was asked about their names once, and remarkably responded: the larger, more intimidating of the two it calls Cerberus, and this dog has a deep, throaty bark and always sits on its master's left; the one on its right it calls Laelaps, and is a slightly smaller dog notorious for cornering those attempting to escape arrest. When making an arrest, The Hound first leaves a replica of its mask for its target to find, generally in their bedroom or study. Most of the arrests happen at night, and despite having never lost a chase, The Hound is usually fled from. It then calls its Pharoah Hound, which pursues the unfortunate until it and The Hound have them cornered. At such times, The Hound seems to be everywhere, appearing at the end of a road the person had been intending to flee down, constantly forcing them into side alleys and dead ends. It also appears to possess nigh inhuman speed and agility, and the massive flapping of its robes as it gives chase adds to the element of terror. Biography: Judgment's Hound came with the Maestro. No one knows anything about it, its name, its past life, or even its gender; its voice changes each time it makes an appearance, from a rich tenor to a quiet alto to a gravelly bass. Perhaps Records' drawers hold some information about itâ??and perhaps not.... Weapon: The Hound carries no visible weapon, nor does it generally need one. It was only assailed once, by a certain Petr Holst, who had found the trademark mask on his bed and had publicly announced that he would kill The Hound when it came for him. His body was discovered the next morning in the street surrounded by scattered shreds of black cloth, his face contorted in a mixture of hatred and terror, a blood-free saber clenched in his hand, and a stiletto buried in the back of his neck. The authorities determined from the amount of blood present that he had been killed there; presumably he had chased The Hound into the street and there met his demise. Though the cloth tatters around him suggested that he had at least fought The Hound before dying, no other blood spatterings were found anywhere near the scene. To date, the incident has not been repeated. Role: Judgment's Hound
...also, I'm too poor to be able to buy any embarassing CDs. :[
Tru dat. (Wait. Did I really just type that?! :animeshy:) Anyway, when I do manage to purchase music, I generally go with artists I've heard and liked, and that I feel I would enjoy listening to repeatedly. As in ad nauseum. I also tend to be really critical of the music I listen to, so if there isn't much substance present, I leave it behind. With that said, I haven't personally bought anything I'm embarassed to let others see, but I had a set bought for me that should never have been allowed onto the recording floor. Imagine, if you will, a triolgic travesty of total triparte trash. (That was fun.) I was actually rather excited at first; for once in my life, I failed to read the fine print on the CD case(s). I had been given John William's music for the original Star Wars trilogy. What I failed to read was the phrase: "The music of John Williams as arranged and recorded by the New World Symphony Orchestra." For those who are blissfully unaware of this group, the NWSO is actually a orchestral college here in the states, and the only orchestral group to date that manages to sound like four electric keyboard players. You can imagine my displeasure.
Reason: Who knew you couldn't type this band's full name *sigh* you ppl are sick![/FONT']
Well, what did you expect? :animesmil I lose more synonyms to depraved vulgaric slang....

Unless Tiana wishes terribly to abdicate her position, I also am content. Unfortunately, I am not content continue Argo's current mediocre streak. (That sounds a little harsher than I meant it to....) Also unfortunately, Sandy's hint at the next challenge does not bode well for me; I am rather mediocre myself at lyrical pursuits (ha, that was almost a pun...wait...:animedepr) mainly because my writing style, which I assume you guys have now seen to be slightly sardonic and rather irreverent, does not lend itself well to poetry or song. My mechanics aren't bad, but I fear I'm much too cynical for such art. So unless Sandy just wanted to throw us completely off-track, which I doubt, then I am not looking forward to this challenge. I will try, though. I always try. Except tomatoes. I won't try those. Or dancing.

Discuss Of Humans and Dragons - Underground HQ [PG-VL]
Allamorph replied to TheResplendent's topic in Theater

...though i referred to them more as secret hideouts ;P.
Yeah, somehow I just got it lodged in my head that dragon nests/roosts were referred to as wyrs (or weyrs). (Rhymes with sphere.) Personally, I think it looks much more 'dragony', if you will. But I'll go with the consensus on that one. And while I'm having my brainstorming day, I think at some point the river should be stopped somewhat so the dragons have a nearby lake to bathe themselves in. Underground lakes work just as well; the image I have there is of the lake in LOTR: The Two Towers that Gandalf and the Balrog fell into. I was very much taken with that cavern.
But the dragons are not meant to be like horses, kept in an area until they are needed for battle.
Of course not. To do so would almost be sacrilege. Dragons are sentient, and so free to do as they please when not with their rider. Just so you know we're in agreement. (^_^). Thank you. I have a decent picture of Grateus in my head now. I think I shall go now?my sister's dog is almost miaowing from behind her door, and I'm a little creeped out. -
Discuss Of Humans and Dragons - Underground HQ [PG-VL]
Allamorph replied to TheResplendent's topic in Theater
Right, I have some follow-up questions/thoughts regarding Grateus's geography. First:
-Two very large continents: Nidorram on the west / Kythira on the east. In between are various sets of Islands and about a half a days boat trip in between continents depending on the route taken.
Only half a day, even with sails? So then these continents are very large. (O_O) Either that or no one has bothered sailing west from Nidorram / east from Kythira. Or both. This also means that one could probably fly between continents easily on a well-rested dragon. Lots of ideas come forth from these thoughts....
-The Sapiens HQ is located within a large mountain range, [U']and the Validus within a deep forest.
Dragons being large and what, would there happen to be a cavern system underneath the Validus stronghold so the beasts could have at least a surrogate wyr? If possible, I can see the system abutting a canyon river so that the caverns open from a cliff. Of course, the dragons could launch from ground level, but it would be significantly more awkward, I think, especially given the trees and what. Besides, flying out of a canyon wall seems cooler, no?
-The two capital cities on Nidorram (now under Empire control) are/were Pharesh and Khardock. -On Kythira, there is a Isthmus toward the southern end that connects to a smaller mass of land (still part of the continent) that is where Garai's castle is located.
Approximately where are the capitals on Nidorram? I don't really think specific locations are necessary, just a general North-east or South-west or such. Also, is Garai's castle the only major city of interest on Kythira, or is there another Empire stronghold we can focus on? The more, the merrier.... -
I have decided to discontinue this challenge after this round, and award both Team Argo and whichever team wins this debate. The two losing teams won't be punished, though. The reason is that I want to vitalize this game with a more active challenge. Hope nobody feels bad for this decision. The heat is on, Survivors!
I actually didn't mind the debate challenge so much. Perhaps if...well, I can't say anything. Comments now would be rather pointless and ill-served, so I shall abstain. I am slightly confused as to the resolution, though. Since the Mercenaries won, awarding both us and a third team would not provide for multiple losers, unless something interesting went on in the points. I do not mind the decision either way, I am only perplexed. As far as expectations go, we've seen skills drawn on from the Debate/Arts/random searching/writing domain, leaving us with several options for challenges. I actually expect a few more skill-based sections to come up; perhaps more writing, or even sparring (???). Given that this is the fourth Survivor Sandy's run, I fancy much more ingenuity from him than I can come up with.
