2.
While I can see how "not shutting up about it" can be annoying [I could make a list of what all I've had to put up with, but I won't], I don't think countering it with OH I WILL NEVER WATCH THE SHOW EVER is any more fair. I don't really understand why people feel the need to carry around Hype Aversion like it's some sort of badge of honor.
Honestly, neither do I. (Although in all probability it's less "I don't want to watch this because it has to be drivel" and more "I don't want to end up like these guys".) And to be fair, I have sampled the fare and decided I did not wish to partake at this time. My decision has nothing to do with the current tizzy and everything to do with I'm more interested in researching fictional stuff at present.
Also I did make a thread to contain the spazzing, and that's only been working so much. So you can't fault us for not at least trying.
I had hoped I made it clear that I was faulting the one particular post. =P I really don't care what people like or don't like. What I can't stand are blatant guilt trips. I find them tactless and futile (and I see enough of them handed out wholesale by my mother, lovely-person-that-she-is notwithstanding) and they inspire more aversion in me than most forms of general stupidity. Thus my reaction.
I just find it a little rude to act like not wanting to give this thing a chance somehow makes you better than those who have watched it and liked it.
I refer you to my recent post about stupid people and dealing with them.
  3.
You know, all joking aside, guys, I appreciate differing opinions and all. I know not everyone's gonna like what I like, and I think that's fine, because a world full of me would be boring and creepy. At the same time, though, I do think it's a shame when someone just up and decides that they refuse to give a decent work of fiction a chance. And I know you don't mean it that way, but look at it from the creator's perspective. You spend years toiling and laboring over this one project of yours in the hope that folks will enjoy it, and people just ignore it as soon as they see the pink horse on the cover. Seems a little unfair, don'tcha think? Just something to ponder.
I'm allowed to talk because I actually did suffer through the first Twilight movie.

While this is true, I'm fairly certain attempting (poorly) to guilt-trip people into either testing out said item or shutting up about not liking it is both the complete wrong way to get them interested in the series and entirely disingenuous since it's patently obvious that anyone who likes it is incapable of shutting up about it for long enough for anyone else to bear getting into it.
And I can also talk because I sat through Rozen Maiden completely of my own volition, and not because some butthurt dude gave me a holier-than-thou speech about how I should be fair and watch it regardless of the Victorian twelve year old on the cover.
Shin: Wouldn't have happened if he had balls of steel.

  7.
Oh wow. Best of luck man.
Thanks. =) I feel I should probably clarify my intent with that post, besides the casual-shocker sort of thing that lovely out-of-left-field major decision announcements tend to carry. I don't believe life-changing events are necessarily always out of a person's individual control. I do know it's tough to accept and adapt to changes you don't have any choice in, especially when they don't seem to be good in any immediate way. Probably the simplest example would be just moving, whether it's across town or to another state, or to the opposite side of the country, or to a completely different nation. (Props to you, Korey, for taking that head-on.) Stuff like that you may not look forward to, or even want at all, so yeah, I'd say it'd be difficult to want to pursue. But then again, you never know what's down the road until you get there, and three years later when you look back, that's that much more experience you have now that you didn't have starting out, and once you notice what's happened since the change, you might suddenly realise that you have gained an intangible something in the process that you wouldn't ever want to give up. And then there's changes that you try to make for yourself, like a person tired of living in the slums their whole life and wanting to better themselves and rise up out of that, or like my decision to join the Navy (which honestly is because I feel I need a swift kick in the pants to get my life back in the gear it by rights should have been all along). These changes are ones you want, so obviously you know they're there, and you've accepted you need them, and you're actively pursing them because you believe you need them. You still don't always know whether they're going to be good or bad for you, but I think you're pretty sure you wouldn't try to go after them if you didn't think they'd help. As for life-changing events that alter things for the worse.....I dunno. I'm not entirely certain I can agree to such a pessimistic thought. I mean, the best changes can be poisoned by a doggedly negative outlook, and so it holds that the worst things that can happen to someone can be turned into something better if that person chooses to keep their head about them. And I suppose I'm sort of biased as a Christian, since "...we know God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose."[sup]*[/sup] Doesn't necessarily say everything will always be sunshine and rainbows, but it does mean that even the ugliest portions of our lives will have an end and will be useful for something, even if it's just helping someone else who ends up going through a similar set of trials. In short, I guess, if the changes were so slow that I didn't notice them as they were working on me, I don't guess the other two questions would apply. But as long as I knew something was happening, and regardless of whether or not I liked it, I hope I'd have the maturity to know which ones to try and pursue, which ones to struggle with and bear until they passed, and which ones to avoid. ------- [sup]*[/sup]Romans 8:28 (NAS)
  8. I am going to the next town over on Monday afternoon to finalise my enlistment with the Navy. I'm actually hoping it will be life-changing, because that's exactly what I need right now.

I probably need to listen to the original "Stardust", then. Hilltop Hoods used it in their chart "Roll On Up", and because of them I've been on a major hip-hop kick lately.

  13. Okay, then according to that link, I'm not as concerned. It was announced (as I mentioned above somewhere) that Japanese officials were going to be releasing some amounts of irradiated vapor from coolant towers so they could alleviate pressure on the system. Therefore some amounts of these isotopes should have indeed started showing up.
  14.
Just confirmed: presence of Caesium-137 and Iodine-131 in the vicinity of Fukushima.
News broadcast station? Or can has link plz?
  15.
I heard from my friends in Chiba. The oil refinery aflame there is slowing down and they think the nuclear plant thing is being over rated.
Really? That's good to hear. I've been looking for news on that refinery since yesterday and haven't found anything except the same old "Ichihara is burning" deal. As far as I know, the Fukushima plant is well under control, and no US aid was actually required. I think the 'overrated' part comes from the threat of meltdown, which is a little more destructive, both immediately and in the long-termâ??but I'm glad to see both clear of danger levels.

  17.
DERP
It's called getting a sharable source, melon-head. =) Speaking of, another update on the plant in Fukushima; they're going to try releasing some radioactive vapor to relieve pressure on the system, which has risen to about fifty-percent above what's considered normal. Meanwhile the US has sent reactor coolant that direction. Ducky's link finally let me figure out where those round burny things were. It's an oil refinery in Ichihara. I can't find anything current on that situation, though. Seems all interested parties just took pictures of the big billowing flames and went looking for more water damage and whirlpools. =/ EDIT!!! I did, however, manage to find some news from tomorrow!! Specifically, it gives some better details on industrial and economic repercussions. Is it really the 12th already over there? I mean, it just now got to be the 11th over here ... wait. When did it get to be twenty after one? o O
  18. Update on that power plant in trouble. Plant is in Fukushima, and residents within a 3 km (a little less than two mile) radius of the plant were asked to evacuate (about 3000 people). Residents inside 10km (about six miles or so) were asked to stay home. There are no reported immediate signs of problems, however.
  19. Been watching this all morning, since I found out late last night; I went to bed about the time Shy was posting, apparently. Got some video from CNN last night, and more this morning from them and FOX and The Weather Channel. ...it's flooding in New Jersey, for some reason. o_O Uh. All the news stations, and TWC especially, are making a point of noting that they're watching Twitter feeds for faster live updates. According to CNN right at this moment, Maui saw a seven-foot rise, followed immediately by a seven-foot drop, and then a seven foot rise right back. There's a bunch of damned commercials right now, though, so I can't give anything else immediately useful.... Some of the videos coming in from Sendai are horrible. From what's been said about them, there were 13-foot high tides sweeping across the mainland. I've been watching farmland literally swallowed by water; dozens of half-submerged cars clumped together by the sides of highways, like forgotten toys clustered by the rim of the bathtub; an airport literally engulfed in a matter of seconds. I think four nuclear power plants were shut down successfully, but there may be one (or two) other plants having some damage issues. There was also apparently a whirlpool off the coast somewhere. Okay, TWC and CNN are confirming now that Maui saw seven- to eight-foot tsunami-effect waves, which wrought a little bit of havoc there, but overall Hawaii has not been overly damaged so far. Pearl Harbor got basically nothing, and the US Military there declared the tsunami threat over about an hour or so ago, although obviously that's not the case on the rest of the island chain. =P According to this news video uploaded by RussiaToday (also news article here), the Kuril Islands saw tsunami waves up to 3 meters (about ten feet) high, along with a few 5.0-magnitude aftershocks. As far as US West Coast warnings go, if I recall right officials don't expect more than a three- or four-foot variation. I'll verify that as soon as I can.
  20. Flu is totally gone, aside from some lingering tenderness in the upper spinal area. Going to see a doctor about the sinus/bronchial stuff to make sure the flu didn't turn into pneumonia. Also got a four-star headache that will not go away. Other than that, I feel great!

  21. Yeah. I think there were three or four of those that happened while I was in high school, and about a dozen near-misses. I know that every year I've been in college I've gotten at least four mass-emails (per year) from the campus president informing the student body of a student's death, usually from a car accident. Sometimes it's because of alcohol indulgence, but mostly it's a freak accident, like some bonehead running a stoplight at fifty miles an hour and T-boning the driver's side. I've also lost one friend to brain-stem cancer and one to muscular dystrophy. You never really get used to it. =/
