both you and Hc really shouldn't have a problem verifying your citizenship if you are a citizen. what would it matter? its just one more thing they ask for... its already allowed for them to ask for ID, why not ID and proof of citizenship? say... we make a second id card for it... you take your SSN to a DMV... they run it through... it checks out and they give you a card that says legal in big bold letters, has a picture of you on it and has a bar-code that links to your name in the DMV database. would that be hard to do? would your privacy really be infringed?
Also remember that our nation was founded in order to escape (as we saw it) a government abusing its powers. So there's a balancing act that needs to go on here between allowing the State the ability to enforce its own laws and preventing the State from overstepping itself. Although I will say that if a person balks at the idea of showing their proof of citizenship every time they're pulled over then they might should consider obeying the speed limit. =P -

Before I get started, I want to note that I am only using this quote as a springboard, and am not intending to single anyone out.
Yeah but are we also going to pretend like racism and discrimination have nothing to do with this law?
I really dislike this approach in general because any comment on it, whether crying out against racial discrimination or defending against an unfair affrontry, is placing entirely too much emphasis on an unfortunate characteristic of the situation surrounding the law. What I'd hope people would consider is this: Barring highly specific circumstances, is there any other ethnic group that crosses the US's southern border? The issue of racism in the law is unfair from any angle because there isn't another race to grant privilege to or discriminate against. We live above an entire continent-and-a-half of Latin Americans. This isn't like the Atlantic Slave Trade where the slaver vessels could have chosen to steal/buy people from anywhere else in the world to bring to this country and then beat down. The four land-bordering states in the south can't choose a different group of people to travel across their bordersâ??again, barring specific situations. The wording of the law didn't explicitly refer to any particular ethnic group. Could that still be racist, since the only group Arizona has to worry about are Latinos? I don't know. Would Arizona be treating this situation differently if they had other ethnic groups to deal with? I don't know. What I do know is that hinting at the existence of racist motives is still the best way to polarise any complicated topic. -
According to Amnesty International, people living in the Niger Delta have experienced oil spills on par with the Exxon Valdez disaster every year for the last half century. Article. (CNN) In short, Nigeria's calling the US out over the late BP oil fiasco, essentially saying "if this is such a major environmental disaster then why aren't you helping us out?" For perspective, the nine- to thirteen-million barrels of oil mentioned in the article translates to about 378- to 546-million gallons of oil spilled in the Niger delta, compared to the 184-million gallons spilled in the gulf (figure taken from here). So is this just another country trying to ride on the US's financial coattails (such as they are) or should the EPA be down in Niger raising Cain as well? Or have we become a culture who only gets intense when our internal political quibbles and agendas can be serviced?

â??This?â? Saul raised himself from beside the small lounger, stepping back beside the unimpressed Sayo. As if sensing the release of ownership, the modest-sized Persian stretched across the sunroomâ??s doorway uncurled and padded inquisitively to the other side, beginning a thorough olfactory examination of his own. â??Yeah,â? Saul replied. â??What do you make of it?â? â??Make of it?â? Sayo sighed in mild annoyance. â??Make of what, Saul; itâ??s a half-dead pokemon, for Lugiaâ??s sake!â? â??Itâ??s from Hoenn,â? said Saul. â??Itâ??s not native to the continent.â? â??So someone with a bit of money imported it. Happens all the time.â? â??It has no registered trainer,â? the journalist insisted. â??Then the owner was probably incompetent and abandoned their exotic pet.â? Sayo refused to be taken in. â??Saulâ??,â? â??I found it in a Silph Company dumpster in Saffron.â? His former Viridian teammate drew up short. â??Well, I didnâ??t find it in the dumpster, to be honest,â? Sail explained. â??It fell out of a rust hole and rolled over to my feet. But I saw another dumpster being emptied into a processing truck, and there was almost a rain of red and white coming out of it, so I checked around and....â? He shook his head. â??Sayo, there had to be at least six hundred discarded balls in there.â? Sayoâ??s eyes narrowed. â??Empty or full?â? â??I only checked about fifteen or twenty on top, but I didnâ??t find any that werenâ??t occupied,â? Saul answered. He grimaced and broke eye contact. â??I actually released four of them, and this one was the only one alive,â? he added. Sayo whistled gravely through her teeth. â??Okay,â? she allowed, â??you might have found something serious here.â? â??Iâ??m a reporter,â? Saul threw in. â??Itâ??s what I do.â? Sayo snorted, then frowned. â??But itâ??s not going to do you any good sitting on it here. Come to Blackthorn with me and Iâ??ll talk to Claire about it. We have the resources and the means, and Iâ??m not certain how much longer a paper is going to do anything.â? Saul didnâ??t answer right away. She had a fair point, he knew, but she was also still trying to recruit him. It was a smooth pitch, he had to give her that, but it was still a recruitment pitch, and there was a small knot inside him that continued to protest the thought of combat. What had initially been simple battle-weariness had slowly become a love for just living with his creatures, and he wasnâ??t sure he was ready to give that up. But he didnâ??t know what to make of this odd discovery in Saffron, and with Sabrina apparently turning it into a fortress and Claire obviously nervous, he wasnâ??t sure how much he could do if the entire continent started falling apart. â??Saul, look.â? Sayo seemed to have run out of patience with him, but she addressed him with fatigue, not anger. â??Donâ??t drag this out. Somethingâ??s happening up north. The rest of the recruitment team has all been recalled. The only reason Iâ??m even here is because Claire is fixated on getting all of Blueâ??s team, and youâ??re the only one left.â? She crossed her arms. â??I know her; if you send me back alone, sheâ??ll just send someone else, over and over until you give in, and the longer you wait the less likely sheâ??ll be to listen to anything you might have to say.â? â??Like this,â? Saul offered, still staring at the lounger. â??Like this,â? agreed Sayo. Saul considered a moment longer, and then sighed. â??All right. Iâ??ll join up.â? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Morty came to slowly, his thoughts thick and slow as if he hadnâ??t slept in days. Groaning, he tried to raise his hands to his face to press the grogginess out of his eyes, but after several attempts and a too-long bit of confusion he realized they were bound at his sides. Opening his eyes yielded him little information. Something white covered his face; from the smell of it, and from the weird grasping sensation on the backs of his hands, he gradually identified it as webbing, probably from a . . . spinarak. Thatâ??s what they were called. He couldnâ??t move his legs, either, so he guessed the webbing covered his entire body. Only his nose seemed to be free; Morty was suddenly very thankful that his sinus infection had cleared up a week ago. Around him were the muffled sounds of people. It sounded moderately busy, but Morty couldnâ??t make out any distinct noises that might tell him what was going on, and even though he heard a shouted phrase now and again, the webbing obfuscated the words. From the feel of the ground he considered that he might be outdoors somewhere; was he at Bugsyâ??s camp? That answer made the most sense, just as it sent his spirit plummeting down a proverbial mineshaft. Bugsy had already ordered his forces to attack and kill human trainers. Morty had assumed that such tactics would mean the youngster wouldnâ??t be taking prisoners, but apparently he had been wrong. And if the kid was willing to kill to accomplish his goals, what might he do with those he captured? The stomp of approaching boots halted his thoughts, and he had just enough time to brace himself before a rough hand grabbed the webbing on his face and ripped it off of his head. â??Afternoon, pal,â? said a swarthy-looking man. A nasty grin split his face. â??Yer cominâ?? with me.â?
So is apostrophe s ever used in a possessive case? I always thought it was, at least under some circumstances.
The question shouldn't be "is 's ever used in possessive", but rather "what kind of possessive am I using". If the word is a possessive, 's is used for anything except pronouns; his, hers, yours, theirs, and its do not use apostrophes because doing so makes little sense. If you're going to focus on just when to use 's, you're going to run into a lot of confusion between possessive words and contractions of "___ is". The whole "possessive words ending in S" is always a bit weird. You can almost interchange Jesus's and Jesus' without a problem, but you can't do Chris', and The Stevens's just looks weird. Only thing I can think to say there is in the case of proper nouns, if it's singular use 's, and if it's plural you can just tack on an apostrophe.
I usually don't correct grammar at all.
Good habit to get into.
m i doin it rite?
Pas de réplique! Je m'en fiche.
However, I am a lot more lenient when it comes to possessive apostrophe s, because I often get confused about what I'm supposed to write. So I'd be glad if someone yelled at me to fix my errors.
It's actually not a possessive in that case. It's a contraction, much like "it's". "mom is" becomes "mom's"; notice that the sentence "your mom's it" doesn't actually have a clear verb in it. However, the overarching point is that the only people with whom you can correct grammar during casual conversation are other English-ophiles.because we should know better. Anything goes in a professional presentation, but driving yourself batty over txt-speech and the almost complete lack of rules will do absolutely nothing (since your addressee won't care) and will label you as a first-class self-possessed *****. I'm already a first-class self-possessed *****, so it's perfectly fine for me. Edit: Wow, wtf ***** is censored? So I can't say that Sleeping Beauty pricked her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel? That's pretty sad. Edit2: Oho, so it's context sensitive. So is '*****' censored as well? Edit3: Okay, that's kinda cool. Still means you can't say "it'll just be a small ***** and then it's over". But what about snigger? Edit4: HAHA THAT IS AWESOME ......edit5: wanker? y/n?
you get 1 CaNz shuts up card usable at any time for that one.
Haha. =D Nah, I think I'll pass. NOT YOU'RE.
Tacking on to what Korey said, if you are going to go around griping at other peoples' English, you could at least do them the courtesy of being correct about it. The sentence was "your mom is it", which reduces to "your mom's it". So while your bit about the your/you're confusion was fine, you missed the forest for one tree. Furthermore, I'd like to remind you that grammatical hounding is my domain, and if I haven't said anything about someone's posting styles I'd advise you to consider that I am probably avoiding mention of it for a good reason, and it'd probably be better for you if you didn't mention it either. In other words: fix it when it matters so you don't shove your foot in your mouth.

Francis Marion University

HOLY CRAP, YOU'RE IN FLORENCE??? I freaking grew up there! Dadgum, what a weird blast. I'm at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, which is about halfway between Nashville and Knoxville. (The people here love their -villes, apparently.) Finished my fourth year this past spring, but only my second in the Mechanical Engineering program; spent two years in Music Education, which is about how long it took me to realise that college is job-training and I was training for a job I said I'd never do (which didn't sit well). By default, though, I completed the requirements for a minor in Music, and am debating an additional minor in Mathematics (since our ME program requires so much that I'm literally, like, one or two classes from completing it anyway) and possibly a minor in English if I have the time to swing it. I've lived on campus and in campus housing for the past four years, but I'm really wanting to get an apartment here this coming fall. Ultimately I want to go into technical writing/editing (the people who put together the manuals for all the complex equipment) because really writing is my strongest discipline, and I'm also tired of getting a new piece of tech only to have it accompanied by a manual that looks like it was put together by a group of inebriated German immigrants. Yay profiling. Unfortunately, my university doesn't offer anything in line with that career path, so I'm probably going to focus in either energy transfer or aerospace, work for a while (or enlist, we'll see) and then go back for a master's in Editing or Journalism or something that'd be useful in that regard. Tentative plan, though; I'll know more the closer I get.
