1.
Of course there are people who can regulate themselves, but those people also have the brains not to get caught breaking the rule, so what's the big deal here?
Exactly. Also, I said I won't vote yes but at the same time if they did legalize it... in my opinion, so what? All I've been saying is I wouldn't help with any push or vote to get it there and the reasons why I came to that decision. Oh and I agree Darren, I've seen people using alcohol display those same attributes too. I wouldn't be sorry if that stuff dropped off the face of the Earth either, but, it is legal so the only thing I would push for is stricter laws for those idiots who drink and drive and so forth.
 2.
Oh my.... Jared is so...
Ribbons anyone?
XP Yup someone is in for a very, very rude awakening.
>_> That's what I was thinking when I saw the post... what you've got spoiler tagged there. I was over at Indi's theO world and had to come and see what this surprise was that she mentioned. I was definitely not expecting something like this. XP
And I just know that Indi and Allamorph are still snickering over how much that post surprised me. >_> I would have never guessed that the event Beth was referring to would be this. I've been had! lol[/FONT']
Yeah, I'm sure they'll laugh at the rest of us too but... holy hell! O_O I would have never guessed that the surprise was something like this either. We've been cracking jokes about Jared needing to get clobbered only now... o_O
 3.
To be frank, this is ridiculous. Your language is far too strong -- to assert that people who participate in an activity not 100% essential to base survival are "addicted" on some level is silly. What about reading a good book, or eating a candy bar? You don't get "addicted" to those, you simply enjoy them due to an association of pleasure (satisfaction, a sweet taste, etc). Addiction implies substance dependence, and insofar as a candy bar is "addicting," so is marijuana.
To be frank, your insistence that I see things as you do is what?s ridiculous. You said it later on in this reply; I am basing this on what I have seen. You are also ignoring that I already said I was willing to listen to someone who has far more knowledge or experience on this than either you or I do. Addiction can apply to anything, not just stuff that is literally physically addictive. The moment something moves into taking away from normal activities (which as I already pointed out is what I?m talking about) is the moment I consider it addiction. I call it like I see it and if the strong language offends you, so be it.
Even if one joint has as much carcinogenic content as a pack of cigarettes (which I highly doubt, but whatever), I would not say the risk to health is enough to warrant the criminalization of it, because let?s be honest, the reason it?s illegal is not due to health concerns. The government (and by extension, police) is not busting kids for possession of marijuana because they?re afraid their citizens will contract cancer. If you?re honest with yourself, you?ll know and understand that the criminalization of marijuana is due to its perception as ?addictive? or ?dangerous? and its status as a purported gateway drug. And of course like most things taken in excess it is unhealthy (ex: alcohol). I can?t stress this enough, folks, moderation.
Back up a bit here; if that's really true then back it up instead of expecting me to take your word for it. So far no one seems to be willing to do that (perhaps because they can't). They just say "you're wrong" and leave it at that. I'm supposed go change my opinion just because you say so? o_O
Generally speaking, I?m seeing that most arguments against weed legalization are personal morals, misinformation, or a poor previous experience. Not to say that having a moral code against drugs is bad or anything (lol), nor am I saying it?s wrong to judge things on past experience (that?s what humans are designed to do). But I am saying that if you look at the issue objectively, and take into account the fact that both cigarettes and alcohol are legal (and harmful and/or potentially dangerous1 in their own respects) it should yield at least tolerance for marijuana. I know that we?ll never persuade one another, but I guess I don?t see how one can feasibly maintain the position against marijuana when other potentially harmful things are out there and in widespread, legal circulation (and doing far more damage that weed is at the moment).
No deal, you claim misinformation and yet everyone in this thread so far has yet to literally back their claims with genuine information on the subject. In that respect all of us are blowing out hot air since as I said, not one of us is truly qualified to say with any level of certainty that it?s okay to legalize it. You say to look at it objectively, but honestly, it sounds like your idea of objectivity only exists if my opinion changes to match yours. How many times do I have to say it before you get it? In my opinion, there is no need to legalize even more stuff that is harmful. Whether or not something else is worse is beside the point. That?s being used as an excuse instead of a real reason for making it legal. The lesser of two evils has never been an argument that would change what I think.
 4.
Don't worry, I'm not trying to convince you that pot should be legal or anything. The point of this thread was more for me to see the different points people would bring up (wether they're for or against legalization). But when you call smoking pot "a fix" then I get a little irritated. That makes it sound like it's some hardcore drug with addictive qualities. It's not. You can become addicted to it, but that depends on the person, not the pot. I believe it should be legal for the many of us who are responsible enough to use it properly. And there are a lot of us.
Whether or not that fix is hardcore or not doesn't matter, the point is... just like anything, it is a fix. Whether it's physical or mental doesn't matter. On some level it is addicting or you wouldn't bother to smoke it. It's not like water and food that you need to survive. And how many there are of you who claim you are responsible enough for it is also irrelevant in my opinion. None of you are qualified to truly judge if it's a safe drug to make legal or not. Unless one of you is hiding a degree in medicine that I am unaware of. I'm more inclined to listen to someone who actually knows what they are talking about instead of people who are going on personal experience and what they've gotten off of the Internet. Just as you are going on personal experience to demand legality, I'm going on personal observation that's saying, until someone can say otherwise, I see no reason to support a movement to make it legal. And there are a lot of us.
 5.
To be perfectly fair, Rach: You can't just lump all pot-heads into one category like that. Take me, for example: I smoke a lot. (At least 3 days a week) However, I still hang out with my friends all the time. (and no, they don't smoke. And I never have to make them uncomfortable by smoking in front of them) I was never really interested in school to begin with, but for all intents and purposes, I aspire to graduate college with excellent grades and I graduated from high school ranked 4th over all, with an honors diploma and a pretty decent scholarship. I held a steady part-time job my junior and senior year, (I just quit, actually) and I was late once, but it had nothing to do with marijuana. (But be serious here, who really wants to go to work anyway?) I don't know anyone who has a kid and smokes pot, but I know plenty of people who have kids and don't. Surprisingly, there are a lot of them who also don't have interest in doing things with their kids. I've never dumped my friends, or vice versa, because of marijuana. Like I said earlier, I try to be kind about that and smoke only around those who I know are okay with it and I never ask another friend to smoke with me. And I know it's easy to say that people have the tendency to drop out of school when they get heavy into marijuana, but I think the drop-out rate is probably higher with people who go out to party. (Those parties usually consisting of alcohol consumption. Not marijuana) If they drop out due to marijuana, meh. They should know when to say they're done. Sorry, but if they can't be smart about drugs (the same way that people need to be smart about alcohol) then they're bound to ruin their lives.
To be perfectly fair, yes I can. Re-read what I posted, I listed the effects I saw happen to people I know. I didn?t once say that ?all? pot users suffered the same symptoms, but hey let?s not stop there. This isn?t some simple I saw this once sort of deal, this is something I?ve observed for over a decade among friends and even the students I work with in the past three years. It?s not a snap judgment it?s one of seeing the same pattern happen again and again. You?re also missing what I?m saying here, those are the reasons why I would not vote yes for it being legalized. Whether you agree with it or not is irrelevant. Everyone makes their decision based on a combination of outside information and personal experience, and mine is that we don?t need more ?legal? stuff for people to smoke.
My point is that anyone can display those attributes at any given moment of their life. Some display all of them consecutively. Other, none at all. It's not just pot-heads that are guilty of it.
You?re still missing the point again, I never said that only people who use pot had those kind of problems, I said those I knew who did, had them. It was something that they didn?t suffer with until after they got into the drug use in the first place. And that?s their words not mine, some got out of using it and others still haven?t.
Now as far as getting busted for breaking the law: You got me there, but since this thread is about legalization, I don't really think they apply. Legalization: I don't care one way or another. 8Bit's statistics are great reasons for "Why not?" But it doesn't really provide any, "Why?" reasons... (But then again, if you think about it, Tobacco and Alcohol are both lacking in those reasons as well)
Wrong, they do apply. Until someone can give me a decent reason as to why we should legalize more ?recreational? drugs, getting busted for having them is an issue. Well yeah, that is the problem with those statistics, that?s like saying anything that doesn?t kill should be legal, pretty poor reasoning in my opinion, especially since like Beth proved in that debate you had with her, the medical benefits that usually come up have already been given the green light and a synthetic approved in pill form that is actually used, so arguing to smoke it for that reason kind of falls short as well.

First of all, you can't get high from second hand smoke. It does not work like that. You'd have to be in a hot box (a small enclosed room where the smoke has absolutely nowhere to go) and just sit there as people blow smoke in your face. And judging from your post, I don't think you'd be willing to do that. I can understand the loss of interest in _____ parts, that does happen (although you have to be willing to let it happen which most people are not) but getting in trouble with the law? That's not a reason for why pot should be illegal. That's like saying "I think marijuana should be illegal because it's already illegal." And they dumped friends who wouldn't smoke with them? Seems like they were just a poor person to begin with. Sorry.

That wasn't really my point but that doesn't matter and like the others you're still missing my point. Whether or not you agree with my reasoning to say no is still irrelevant. I've seen it do nothing but mess up people I know and others through school where I teach. And having someone who himself is a user attempt to tell me I'm wrong in thinking that just isn't going to cut it. That's not a reason for me to suddenly switch and be for making it legal. Also, you missed the point about someone dumping a friend who wouldn't smoke with them. They got so caught up in wanting that fix that nothing else was important. Instead of thinking it was only their problem, consider that until they started smoking, they had never been like that. It's oh so easy to think it was their problem instead of owning up to it could have been the substance they were abusing. In the end, I stated why I would not support a movement to make it legal. Those reasons have not changed and I don't see that happening anytime soon since none of the arguments here come close to convincing me it's a good idea. I'm not actively moving to stop it, I'm saying if it came up I would vote no.
 6.
I understand that it's now off of an extended hiatus and running in Japan again. So hopefully that means we'll see volume 12 over here soon.
Oh, that's good to hear, I was kind of disappointed with how it was left at a cliffhanger in the 11th volume. So I guess now it's the waiting game for it to get to the US. Though that's better than the wondering if they'll ever finish it game. XP Oh and Sabrina, if you thought Krad was
mean in the anime... just wait until you read the manga
He's totally different, seriously.
 7.
But fine. I'll provide a fully clothed, and civil picture of myself soon, so you can all shut your dirty little mouths.
The only one I see here with a "dirty little mouth" as you put it is you. :p So yes do try to provide us with a normal ego-less picture.
 8. Well since I was just hunting up a clip for posting in another thread, I am now listening to this from DNAngel: Ice & Snow One of the few anime's I've bothered to actually purchase the soundtrack for. It's nice and expressive in a pretty and simple way.
 9.
Also, the more I watch it (I'm on the second episode right now) the more I like the music, it's really pretty.
Just wait until you get to "The Second Hand of Time" storyline. Episodes 22, 23 & 24 if I remember correctly. It has some of the most expressive and pretty music in the entire series in my opinion. Here's a clip: Ice & Snow
 10. What color will you choose? It?s just a simple choice she told him; black or white. It ignored the stark reality that hit far too close to home.   A tiny laugh.     A toothless smile.       A tiny wonder. No choice could bring that back, nor could laying it to rest ease the pain. With a heavy heart - he chose white.
 11. Indi: I love the mocking feel to your refrain; it contrasts nicely with the more serious feel to the actual poem. No matter how serious things might seem ?it?s only a test? Allamorph: It?s been said, your poem definitely has a thread of creepiness running through it. I don?t care for some of the wording but the overall meaning comes across quite clearly. Aaryanna_Mom: Out of all the poems I think yours is the most personal like Gavin already pointed out. Even with the repetitive nature of the rhyming, it is still a powerful read and beautiful in its simplicity. Now the fun part, figuring out who to vote for? There are things I like better about each poem over the other one. Way to go guys? you just had to make it hard. XP Anyway? though creepy, I like the sense of hopelessness in the poem by Allamorph. So he gets my vote.
 12. Maybe it's because I haven't quite been here a year and a half yet, but my posts are pretty much the same since I joined. Perhaps the only difference is in rpg posts. In the past five months I've gotten where I'll put more work into some of those. Though when you have a post ending up being 2500+ words... maybe it's too much work. XP
 13.
So although I'm not in any way questioning the validity of this discussion, I can't help but ask what purpose it will serve? The question's been had, guys. Or are our memories that poor? :p
Apparently so and since I've no desire to re-type up my response last time to making it legal... copy and paste! My opinion hasn't changed in less than a year. lol I?ve no interest in supporting the legalization of Marijuana. And my reasons are as follows:

Exposure, like second had smoke from cigarettes I want nothing to do with it or the cancer causing effects it can have. Just as I don?t want to be high either.
The other reasons fall under how I?ve seen it affect those around me who do smoke it:

Loss of interest in doing things with friends.
Loss of interest in studying for school.
Loss of interest in going to work on time.
Loss of interest in doing things with their kids.
Getting in trouble with the law for selling.
Getting in trouble with the law for having it in their possession.
Getting in trouble and fired from work for testing positive at a random drug screen.
Dumping friends because they won?t ?smoke? with them.
Dropping out of school because they quit studying and were failing.
There are others but that sort of thing is what I?ve seen in each and every friend I?ve had who got into this stuff. So why would I want to legalize something that has done nothing but mess up the people I know who use it?
 14. When I do eat it, I prefer whichever brand is the cheapest. It's not all that tasty or filling but as amibasuki pointed out, it's cheap. Something any college student can appreciate. >_> Otherwise, I probably wouldn't bother to eat the stuff.
 15.
I think UGA will be better for you in the long run. Much less snobbery to deal with, and a solid education as well. Besides, just 'cause a person graduates from Ivy League doesn't mean they automatically know what they're talking about. If your parents can't deal with that, then that's a shame, but it's ultimately their issue and not yours. They shouldn't have to milk you for their prestige.
There isn't much more to add since I agree with this sentiment completely. As hard as all that was for you at least your decision now will be with, as you put it, your mind in its right place. Besides, flabbergasting your parents and friends can be a lot of fun. I'm not kidding either, it's hard to seperate what you really want vs what others expect you to want. That and it's even more satisfying to make that choice having a better grip on understanding what you want, which is what really matters.
 16. Well Beth got me started on this: Wolf's Rain: Hot Dog Wolf Something I'm sure is Allamorph's fault since it usually is. :p However classical guitar is nice and fun to listen to so I'm not complaining.
 17.
Mental depravity. And if you think for a moment, you will see why this must be so.
That statement reminds me of some of the stuff I've been reading recently in relation to criminal psychology and The Depravity Scale. Anyway, I'd also agree that the housing issue and that of the cost of living are pretty common issues. As much as I agree that other political issues are a concern, I think fixing some of our more internal ones first is much more important.
 18. Technically I finished in fall 2007. However, commencement and convocation ceremonies are held annually at the conclusion of spring semester so I didn't have that until May 2nd. Though that was for my Masters and not for High School. It's been a long time since I graduated from that. [I'm so old! lol] Anyway, though it's great to be this far along... I'd be more excited about it if I was actually finished with college. XP
 19. I ran into this the other day...
 20. Prices here are about 3.77 a gallon for regular. For the most part the increase in gas prices hasn't affected me all that much, at least not for purchasing gas directly. Being in downtown SLC and having access to the light rail we have [which is free on account of my being a student] I just about never drive anywhere. With parking issues and such, the light rail is quicker than taking a car anyway since it runs every 10-15 minutes all day long and just about everything I need to go to is along it's route. My brothers and I share an older family car which I use once or twice a week and I only pay for the gas that I use, which considering that it gets decent gas millage isn't much. I do know that my brothers fill the tank when it's down to a quarter and since the tank isn't that big, it only takes $40 to fill it. Though considering how prices have changed, it use to only be $20 to fill the tank.
 21.
I'm in the mood for DNAngel so I'm listening to this song from the vocal collections CD I have. Whenever it's a great song even if I have no clue what's being said. I just like how he has a fairly smooth voice that's enjoyable to listen to.
Okay, this is just damn creepy. >_> I come into this thread when my random play has that same song that you listed playing. o_O I'll wait for a moment for the next song to pop up to declare what I'm listening to. Okay... new song Chicago Look away Seriously though... to come in here and have that other song playing... XP
 22. Heh, I find it amusing how Lucia was such a brat to the humans because they needed her skills and she knew that they would do things as she wished. Now... the tables are turned and she's the one who has to do things how Sarvel wants it done. I just bet she was seething inside over fixing tea and being polite for a change. *snicker* Also, I concur... Sarvel is a snot. Good thing she's going to find out about vampires the easy [though the other way would have been interesting] way instead of landing in trouble by hunting down one of those "irritating dead spots"
 23.
Here is maybe the best question ever asked. If someone was born on the 30th of february and the next year february only had 28 days does that person have a birthday? i mean i know they have a birthday, but when is it?
No birthday. People born on that day are figments of one's imagination and do not exist. Or you could go with Vicky's explanation. Seriously though, as DeathKnight said, those born on the 29th.. they just celebrate it on either the 28th or the first of the next month.
 24.
That was utterly awesome. XD The way Nathan and Isen messed with Lucia's place, and I loved how Ruby just laughed and laughed over it. :catgirl:
I agree. I mean I was expecting it to be silly, but not to that level. Heh. Anyway, that timing works for me and unless someone else needs or wants to work something else in, after Sabrina posts we can consider if we want to touch on anything or move ahead a little more. I have nothing to cover, or rather my character needs to have more training before what I have in mind would even work. I'm referring to what you mentioned via AIM a while back Allamorph. A month isn't even close enough as far as training goes. Though if we move things ahead considerably, then we need to get planning on what we want to hit next.
 25. Open Space It was a tossup as to who was more surprised by Patrick?s place, Alex or Nall. His own was a rather modest and simple studio apartment with a combined living/family room and kitchen with a small bed and bathroom connected to the main room. It was in the downtown part of the city center, a section of one of the taller downtown buildings that were for housing instead of businesses. It was still relatively inexpensive as far as living costs went. A certain amount of what they did on Earth was taken care of by those who monitored and issued their assignments. All Reapers had a say in where they lived so long as it was within a certain range of their assigned area of work. And though what they were allowed to choose was reasonable and made finding something suitable easy enough, it still didn?t even come close to what Patrick had chosen for himself, Terry and Fiero. High above the city in one of the tallest buildings - a concept that even now Alex found a bit odd, the human desire to build and attempt to touch the sky - they were standing inside Patrick?s apartment. It was one of the more modern ones as the humans would call it, sleek black and white furniture decorated the place. The outside wall curved in a gentle arch as the corners of the building were curved instead of square. Instead of a simple wall with perhaps a window or two, it was one of floor to ceiling windows. With the building being back against the lake, the view literally covered nearly the entire city. Alex was standing next to Patrick taking in the view while Nall was sitting on the counter to the kitchen that overlooked the main room. On the counter there were all sorts of pamphlets for the various venues throughout the city, something that Nall was nosily sifting through. Other than to glance at them and dismiss them Alex gave it no thought, Patrick had never been the type, or so he had told him, to like socializing with humans in any manner. ?Why in the world would you choose such an illogical location?? Alex finally asked Patrick. When he had come to show him where he would be located, he had not expected it to be in one of the most expensive places in the city. ?What?s illogical about it? I haven?t been in the human world for nearly a hundred years. I have a lot to learn and I find the view rather pleasing.? ?You can enjoy the view by sitting on top of the building or floating in place.? Alex pointed out. ?Don?t you find living in a place like this a waste of money?? ?Money is not an issue for a Shinigami.? ?Well if someone increased what we are allowed, no one bothered to tell me that. How can you possibly afford this place?? Alex just shook his head, wondering why Patrick had chosen the place just as he noticed that the building he was staying in could easily be seen in the distance. It was quite a bit smaller though, not even a fifth of the height of what they were currently standing in. ?The last time I was on Earth, humans considered it impolite and rude to inquire into another?s financial status,? Patrick smiled at the sudden flush of embarrassment on Alex?s face before he looked away. ?It?s nothing you need to worry about Alex. A lot may have changed since I was last here, but the concept of wealthy and status clearly has not. Why else would those who have access to better means continue in their vain attempts to reach the sky?? Patrick turned back to face the windows, folding his arms across his chest as he took in the view. ?By our understanding of time I won?t be here for very long and I?d like to spend my time catching up on everything I?ve missed since I returned to our world.? ?I thought you didn?t like Earth though.? ?True, but since I?m going to be here for a while I may as well enjoy it right?? ?I guess.? Alex shifted slightly when Nall, having finished with the pamphlets, landed back on his left shoulder before he addressed Patrick. ?It?s still a colossal waste of money,? Nall pointed out in a disdainful tone as if Patrick was being an idiot. Something that Alex moved to head off since there was no point in hanging around and getting into an argument. ?Nall and I had better get going; there was something I wanted to take care of before my next assignment.? He smiled hesitantly at both Terry and Fiero who for them had been oddly quiet for a change. ?Take care.? ?You do the same.? Patrick advised the pair before with a nod they took off, passing through the glass directly to head out. For the longest moment he stood there watching the two head off, only turning back to the interior of his place once they were no longer visible. -------------------------- ?Good grief, since when was Patrick that much of an idiot?? Nall growled once they were out of sensing range of the trio. ?It?s bad enough that he?s too dumb to take your concerns seriously, but to turn around and treat being here like its some grand vacation?? Nall snorted in disgust. ?I don?t know Nall,? Alex didn?t have an answer; he was more concerned about other things to really mind what Patrick was up to. All he really cared was that he had decided to get his own place, making it easier for him to do as he wished without him being around to be curious about what he was up to. For some reason Alex got the odd feeling that receiving training from Nathan would be frowned upon. He didn?t know why though since they were allowed to do pretty much whatever they wanted between assignments so in theory, training shouldn?t be an issue. He wasn?t sure that it would be a problem, but he didn?t want to find out either. ?Well forgetting that moron for a minute, what do you want to do now? We still have plenty of time before our next assignment needs to be dealt with.? He shrugged, ?Whatever you want to Nall.? ?You better not change your mind.? ?I won?t.? Alex promised, laughing at the serious tone in Nall?s voice.
