Sexuality: What's right or wrong?
Room Service replied to chibi-master's topic in General Discussion
I'd love to open with a quote from some obscure philosopher or some Lou-Reed-esque figurehead of the indie culture. You know, something to get all the pseudo intellectuals in the room wet. But none of them could ever sum up my thoughts as succinctly as this: "I think an orgasm is your thing, and you should **** whoever the **** you feel like ****ing. Whoever makes you come the hardest. Anybody who says you shouldn't, **** them." -Eddie Murphy. I'm sorry to jump in like this, but I feel this whole debate is re-****ing-diculous. The whole thing is based on pre-concieved notions of normality, the sense of what is 'right' instilled in us by the culture that raises us. That means that it's all just silly human stupidity. Love is love. Gay or straight, bi, curious, whatever troubles your tribbles, it's all the same. Sex? What is sex but the physical act of love? If you tell me I can't love someone because we've got matching parts, well, kindly jog the **** on. The mind reels at the kind of busy-bodied, self-righteous toff who acts like somebody elses love is their business. Ugh. Like I said, sorry to kind of interrupt the flow of this thread, but it's easier than reading the whole thing before contributing anything. Jesus, come on, would you want to sift through this thing at 4 in the morning? But I must say, this whole debate is rediculous. The only way to win this arguement is to prove your own moral superiority, but in order to do that, you have to invalidate people's right to privacy and personal happiness, something which would automatically defeat any sense of moral high-horseitry you could muster. -
1. If you believe in God, why do you believe?
I don't believe in a god. And by that, I don't mean 'I'm not sure.' or 'I'm waiting for more compelling evidence to turn up.' I believe that there is no god.
2. Why do you think others believe in God?
For the same reason that people believe anything; because they're told to. You can indoctrinate someone to believe anything. We live in a world where nonsense is thought of as fact by the vast majority - depending on what culture you're born into, you'll be exposed to a certain brand of nonsense near-constantly. People believe it because it's what their friends believe, what their family believes, and because its what their culture believes. It's that simple.
3. The most popular conflict between faith and reason is usually on the evolution/creationism controversy. What?s your take on the issue? Can science be compatible with belief? Do you accept evolutionary theory?
Evolution is, by far, the most plausible solution we have. It's the one we have the msot evidence for, and its the one that answers the most questions. Therefore, until something else comes along, I'm gonna go with it.
4. What do you think are the most compelling arguments to not believe in God? Or, what do you think are the greatest challenges to peoples? faith.
There is no proof of a god. Therefore, I do not believe in one. I'm down with whatever makes the most sense. There are massive amounts of evidence which refute organized religions, they're not even worth argueing over anymore. And as for some unspecified 'force', well, we have no reason to believe it at this point.
5. Do you think there is such thing as ?reasonable faith?? Or, do you think they are in conflict?
Faith is for the blind. Reason is for the seeing. How can they possibly co-exist?

Jon Anderson (Yes!, Jon & Vangelis) Don van Vilet AKA Captain Beefheart (Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band) Ray White (Frank Zappa) Frank Zappa (Frank Zappa, the Mothers of Invention) Stan Rogers (Solo) Freddie Mercury (Queen) Some of these guys have voices that just blow me away. Mercury, Anderson, White, they all had/have amazing voices. But Zappa and van Vilet didn't really have transcendent voices, and I like them more than the rest... somehow their voices just fit their music personally. Especially van Vilet; his voice is grating and throaty, by traditional standards just terrible. But it's so delightfully weird that it fits perfectly with his music.

I can convince anyone of pretty-well anything, provided they have an open mind and some free time. I can switch seamlessly between big-***, affluent words like "moribund" and "superfluous" and Ebonics. This relates back to number one; so long as yer speaking English, I can talk on your level. Er... I can break the century mark for words-per-minute if I concentrate enough. I don't have any real physical talents, unless you consider being big a talent. Oh, wait, I got one: if I'm braced, I'm nearly impossible to knock over. **** ya, center of gravity!

Interesting Mythology, Folklore, and Urban Legends
Room Service replied to Patronus's topic in General Discussion
I also watch a bit on Vampires, specifically one of the most famous, Vlad the Imalper. He interests me most, the way he tortured people.
Dude, Bad Vlad Tepes wasn't a vampire. He was just a dick, with a tendency towards impaling people on long spears. He was exceedingly cruel, since impalement could often take hours if not days to be fatal, but the guy was no vampire. Anyway, myths are ok. I'm more interested in real history, but there are some really cool stories out there; the Greeks have probably my favourite myths. The Iliad is absolutely fantastic. The Greek habit of combining animals together into freaky abortions of nature - the centaur, the minotaur, the chimera, Pegasus, etc - is just fascinating. I especially love how most of it sounds like it was made up on the spot... I'm looking at you, Homer. I don't know why, but ghost stories have always been really cool to me. I don't believe any of them for a second, but they've always had a certain appeal to me. Maybe because I just love to figure out how the human mind distorts certain situations and creates its own demons. I don't know, but I have some favourites... old asylums are my personal favourites. ****, it's like the buildings were designed in advance to scare tourists! -
"UPUP DOWNDOWN LEFTRIGHT LEFTRIGHT BA START" Ten points if you get that one. "Here lies one who's name was writ in choreographed zerglings." Ten hundred points for anyone who gets that reference.
