      Life doesn't have a 500 word limit, so why should book reports have one?

      Because teachers are afraid of reading long things. Plus in the journalism area, which is the only real place you're going to see any 'book reports' any longer, you don't even get that much room.

      Yeah, in journalism you will find even tighter word limits. It is challenging to convey meaning in only a few words, but necessary (especially for journalism). :-)
