1. Hello, everyone! My name is Brian, and I'm from Valdosta, GA. I live in Columbus now. I was actually introduced to this site a couple of years ago by a classmate at seminary. Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you guys.
2. Ick at most of these bands. They are not hardcore. Hardcore is essentially punk with the heavyness of metal, and little more street attitude. Try the Gorilla Biscuits, Minor Threat, Youth of Today, Agnostic Front...that kind of stuff. You want a more modern idea of hardcore? Try Refused, Jesus Wept, Kids Like Us, Comeback Kid, No Innocent Victim, Madball and that kind of stuff. You want experimental hardcore? Try Botch, These Arms Are Snakes, the Bled, some Converge, etc. As for all the something-cores of the world... Most of those bands have little value. All That Remains may as well be called pop metal, and 'deathcore' is mostly just watered down death metal. Now as for grindcore, you should definitely look into old Napalm Death and Carcass. Though, older Carcass has quite a bit of death metal even in their earlier stuff(thus creating the original idea of deathgrind, totally seperate from the modern sound of deathcore) it's still got the break-neck speed and chaos of old grind and crust punk.
3. The Zen of Screaming Two DVDs, done by a real vocal coach. She is admittedly a poorly teacher of tone and pitch, but your friend can get the basics from her. I'm more of a hardcore kid than a metalhead, but I used to have a buddy who was a wizard when it came to vocal techniques for heavy music. He introduced me to most of the little extreme metal that I do enjoy. Little as I know about it, I can say this: Your friend should likely not start an extreme metal band if he doesn't already know how to do the vocals. It's not going to sound good if he's inexperienced.
4. I feel your pain to some extent. Except that I didn't do anything to earn my way into college through high school. I'm a smart guy and I always have been--I never needed to study to maintain myself in the top 25 of my class. I wound up going to a small seminary in Columbus, GA for about a year(which is actually how I was introduced to this place, interestingly) and then quitting when I ran out of money to carry on. I haven't been back in two years now. I want to go back, finish my theology degree, and then go to Auburn for French Trade; but I don't see that happening now. Too much time wasted, and too little money to count on.
5. You know, I spent quite a bit of time looking through this site before I joined today. This place does seem to have the quality of being fairly unique. I'm interested to know exactly how long some of you have been active on this forum. And so as to keep from straying too far off subject, give me a little briefing on exactly how you came to be...e-close?...with some of the members you guys have listed off.
