And that's where I normally get tossed around in circles at. Orochimaru states something along the lines of Itachi being stronger than him, and then we see/hear Itachi saying something about Jiraya, and yet to hear it stated again that Orochimaru is still not stronger than Itachi. Yet the 3 sanin (sp?) are suppose to be on equal grounds. All of it is a tad bit confusing. And of course we all know that Itachi is the strongest ninja in the world. :p
I think really in the Orochimaru/Jiraiya/Itachi thing, it's like Rock/Paper/Scissors. Orochimaru is primarily a jutsu user, which against the Sharingan isn't a great strategy, as Itachi himself said, against his eyes, all of Orochimaru's techniques were useless. Jiraiya on the other hand is a much more physical fighter, and the Rasengan can't be copied or deflected by the Sharingan, mixed with his Hermit Mode I think it explains why Itachi was quick to retreat. Itachi is a strategic fighter, he picks fights he knows he can win, Orochimaru is the same way, he just underestimated Itachi's Sharingan, and after the attack, he knew he couldn't stick around Akatsuki, so really, he only beat him in the one confrontation. It makes me wonder whether or not he knew about Madara. So yeah, with the Sannin, it's Rock/Paper/Scissors.
Kishimoto confuses people to much. He really need's to start putting more detail into this crap...>.>;
Agreed.
Err. This sorta goes back to me stating that Hitsugaya has overrated the arrancar, or he's the weakest captain.. (or doesn't deserve his title as captain.. Something like that.) Depending on how this fight between Kenpachi and Nnoitora turns out (whether it's over too quickly or not.) before I start saying that the 1st four (five maybe..) espadas are Vasto Lordes.
It's my own personal bias here against Hitsugaya but I think he's probably the weakest of the captains due to the fact he's the least seasoned of them, genius can't really make up for experience completely. After all Luppi had him practically beaten, and he was torn apart by Grimmjow.
Final showdown.. Aizen vs more than 1 person. Ichigo's going to need another power boost (which seems like the direction this is headed.) to go toe to toe with Aizen.
If he's fighting Ichigo, there's going to be someone else there, but if he ends up fighting Yamamoto, I think it'll be one on one.
I should be more careful with how I phrase things. In terms of strength, ie total reiatsu, Yamamoto could very well be superior. As far as cunning, plotting, execution of plans and ultimately who would win in a battle, I think that would likely go to Aizen, if for no other reason than I can't see him even entering a battle he doesn't think himself capable of winning. If he realized he'd be going up against someone that could overpower him, he would maneuver things prior to the battle so as to give him an advantage. So far, he's done this with ease. Just like we all get the sense that Gin revels in plotting and backstabbing, I believe Aizen would choose scheming over strightforward confrontation any day. It just feels like his style. Some people find their thrills in long drawn-out stings. Nothing brings them deeper satisfaction. It's obvious Aizen loves manipulating people. We can see that in his dealings with poor Hinamori, and more recently Orihime. You can see in his eyes that he derives great pleasure from it, the sick bastard.
Yeah, that's actually what I was thinking, Aizen may not be as strong as Yamamoto, but in an actual face off, I think due to all Aizen's pre-planning, he would probably hold the advantage. He's already proven he could operate completely under Yamamoto's radar, so I don't see him changing a working formula.
It would be a waste for those two to stay far away from the meat of the story, so I hope they do something of the sort. Though, if the hougyoku requires the absorption of a large spiritually dense area, is there a possibility there will be some form of all-out offensive in Karakura town? What all is involved in targeting the right area for the hougyoku? Will Aizen need to send men to stake out the area, laying beacons or something for the destruction to take place within it? Or is it just going to happen that way naturally? I would love to see Isshin and Ryuuken get into the thick of things, but I think Isshin at least will want to stay close to his girls, ensuring their protection. As for Ryuuken, it would be great character development if he was willing to traverse dimensions on behalf of others. I'm not sure he'd go so far as that, but it would be interesting.
I'd have loved nothing more than for Isshin to be the one to deflect Nnoitra's strike instead of having Kenpachi appear. But hopefully we will see some action out of those two, it really made no sense for them not to do anything aside fromt ake out two minor arrancar, where were they when Yami, Grimmjow, Ulquiorra and all the other Espada turned up ? They're obviously more powerful than their kids, well not completely sure about Isshin, but really, for a Shinigami captain and a Quincy, they're fairly slow to act. Just for laughs, I love it if turned out that Isshin's old squad was the Sixth, just so we could see a younger Byakuya and laugh at how Isshin treated him.
It could explain a bit, though that alone wouldn't impact his ability to fool everyone, nor would it aid him when forcing others into submission using his reiatsu. After all, it's evident that until a vaizard actually calls on those powers and puts on their mask, their standard walking-around power isn't affected. But, it would also support my reading of Aizen's thoughts of Ichigo. If he had turned Vaizard, he'd have more reason than anyone to wonder whether this new "recruit" would do the same. Or, it could be that just as the other Vaizards could tell Ichigo was transforming, he picked up on it as well. Either way, it would be an interesting development. It would also lead to an even more impressive showdown between the two, something any mangaka would salivate over.
Yeah, I admit, I think he probably is a vaizard himself already, though not as long as Ichigo or the others. When he gave his big speech about transcending past his limits by breaking through the boundaries between a shinigami and a hollow, I pretty much made the assumption he was talking about becoming a vaizard. Then when he got his hands on the hyougokyou it only made sense he'd use it on himself, and likely Gin and Tousen too. As you said, it would be an interesting aspect to Aizen's eventual showdown with Ichigo.
Would you mind mentioning just one of my thoughts you've taken exception to? You seem to have a bit (and by that I mean a lot) of knowledge of specific going-ons within the world of bleach, so perhaps you could bring something to my attention I hadn't thought of before. To tell the truth, I only started reading the manga after getting caught up with the anime during the Bound arc, and since at times the anime takes certain liberties and expands on things from the way they are portrayed in the manga, my viewpoint could be skewed. Enlighten me, if you would (and I don't mean that as a challenge, I'm serious about wanting to get things straight in my head).
Don't worry about it, I actually did the same thing, I watched as far as the beginning of the Bount Arc and then just read the manga from then on. I do intend to go back at some point and actually read the manga from the beginning, apparently the anime sticks fairly close to it. As for what I disagreed with, it's not really based on any knowledge of the specific goings-on in the Bleach universe, more so just the way I percieve the characters themselves. Like for instance, I don't see Aizen in the same way you do, though we've established that already. ^_^' I actually agree with you about the captains not knowing one another's actual limits of power, which was made plain really as you said in the Tousen/Komamura/Kenpachi fight. It's quite similar to how Izuru mentions that most of the vice-captains aren't aware of one another's shikai abilities, they have no reason to know unless they know the other lieutenant personally. With Aizen though, I just can't picture him as being Yamamoto's equal in terms of power, simply because if he was, I don't think he'd have needed to use the scheme he did to get the hyougokyou. He's very powerful for a captain, I'm not debating that at all, I think he falls definitely in the top three or four but the thing about his skills is really we're not sure how they measure up to other captains. For instance, Aizen's own lieutenant Hinamori is regarded as a "kidou master", which I would assume means she has mastered all the different kidou, and Urahara's assistant Tessai equally uses a Level 90 kidou without any incantation. Byakuya likewise uses powerful a Level 80 kidou with no incantation and even Rukia uses a double-kidou made of two Level 60 kidou despite her own strength falling into the lieutenant category. Actually, really, we don't even know what a captain's skills really encompass in terms of power, so it makes it even harder to gauge Aizen's accurately. I think that the problem is the captains of the Gotei 13 each have their own speciality where they're superior over the other captains, where as the Espada are simply ranked in terms of power, making comparisons easier, i.e. Nnoitra < Ulquiorra < Stark, where as we only really know the other twelve captains < Yamamoto. I see Aizen as primarily a schemer of Palpatine's level, he's able to manipulate events years in advance to suit his goals, while being able to cast himself in a completely benign light to avoid any kind of suspicion. As you pointed out, he must have been seen as potentially weak in that they suspected one of the ryoka would be able to kill him without a fight, with his own zanpakutou. I don't think he's actually worried by Ichigo as much as he is intrigued by him, or rather by his growth level, as in the space of a few months he went from a normal soul, to an elite-captain level shinigami. For Aizen, someone obsessed with transcending his own barriers, I think Ichigo is more a source of interest to him rather than a source of danger. Ulquiorra was the one I think who said that the Hollow follow Aizen because he has no fear, and for creatures born of fear, that inspires their loyalty. Lately however, I see Aizen as either having another scheme in place which guarantees his safety, or he's becoming blind to the dangers facing him in much the same way Palpatine was himself killed for underestimating his opponents. After all, he's already lost three Espada, four if you count Grimmjow having the crap beaten out of him, and yet he acts as if there's nothing wrong at all. What that ultimately alludes to, whether his Yamamoto-par strength or simply another scheme, we don't know. I'm just curious, do you eventually see Isshin and Ryuuken showing up in Hueco Mundo ? I'd love to see Ichigo's face when he realises his father is potentially his equal if not stronger than him. It's actually really nice to have someone else to discuss Bleach with, usually this thread is almost completely dead except for two or three posts around the new chapters.
I'm assuming you did a tad of research to bring up some of those points, but if not, you have far better recall than I do. My hat comes off to you.
Mostly recall, helped by the fact I watched the Byakuya/Ichigo fight again a few days ago. I disagree with a lot of what you actually said, but I wasn't going to go dissecting your post because as you said, neither of us can really be proven right until the final showdown actually occurs. Thoughts on whether or not Aizen has transformed himself into a Vaizard ?
-
One thing I don't think he would ever do is underestimate someone. Case in point: Aizen sent Ulquiorra and Yami to kill Ichigo, knowing him to be a threat; Ulquiorra determined he wasn't a threat, and left him alive. Whose judgement was correct?
Ulquiorra as I recall was sent to gauge Ichigo's strength to see if he would become a threat to Aizen and eliminate him if he was, so although Ulquiorra chose to not bother killing Ichigo, the judgement was Aizen's in the end. Ulquiorra himself as a fanatical loyalty to Aizen, so I don't see him doing anything that would potentially put his master in danger.
That being said, how many and which Shinigami do you believe 1. it would take to soundly but not overwhelmingly defeat him? and 2. will actually end up in the final showdown against him? Just wondering your opinions.
1] This is the thing about Aizen, his zanpakutou really makes it hard to gauge his actual strength, and all his fights so far have been against opponents who were in some ways already injured.

Captain Komamura - Had just fought Kenpachi, and we all know, to even survive a fight against him will drain an opponent severely. Aizen uses his illusionary skills to deflect Komamura's attention for a moment before striking him with the Black Coffin kidou spell. The one accurate aspect to Aizen's strength comes from this fight, as he uses an 90th level Kido spell without the incantation, something which Gin comments on as being impressive, though by Aizen's own admission, he only got a third of the full power out of it.

Ichigo - Had just come toe-to-toe with Byakuya in a fight which pushed him too and passed his limits. Given Ichigo couldn't even stand after it, unless Orihime healed him a bit before the fight, I think the whole blocking his bankai with one finger might not be as impressive as it seemed at the time.

Renji - Similar to Ichigo, Renji was already injured before the fight having fought Byakuya and taken a direct strike from his bankai, I know Captain Unohana healed the majority of his injuries, and Hanatarou finished what she had left, but even at the execution we see him fall to one knee after just fighting off those Kidou Shinigami. So again, the impressiveness of his victory over Renji is debatable.

Captain Hitsugaya - Used his shikai illusion, caught the younger captain off-guard, practically cut him in half. Again, not exactly a masterful display of kenjutsu, but to be able to inflict that level of damage on a fellow captain using bankai is impressive.
As well as that, he leaves before having to face other senior captains like Yamamoto, Ukitake or Kyouraku who are relatively uninjured. This could simply be prudent planning, or he really isn't as strong as he let's himself on to be. Now evidence that he is as powerful as he claims comes from his time in Hueco Mundo.

He shows that a person with twice the reiatsu of a captain can activate the Hyougokou, point one in his favour.

Point two, he drops Grimmjow to one knee by just releasing his reiatsu in his direction, similar to what Yamamoto did to Nanao.

The Espada follow him, who are made up of some Vasto Lordes, and I can't see a group of Hollow, who are described by Hitsugaya as being stronger than the average Shinigami captain as following him unless he was more powerful than him. And we know that being turned into Arrancar apparently makes them more powerful than they were already, or at least gives them a greater ability to fight effectively.
All in all, Aizen is powerful yes, very powerful, but how he stacks against other captains has yet to be proven conclusively in my eyes. 2] Hmm, it falls between two people in the end, Yamamoto or Ichigo. I'd like to see Jii-san fight at full power, but it'll probably be Ichigo who fights him in the end.
But remember when Jiraiya fought Orochimaru after the Third Hokage had sealed his arm's? Orochimaru put up a pretty damn good fight, especially considering he couldn't even use his arm's. So we can't exactly call Sasuke's victory over him a blowout.
Hadn't Tsunade poisoned Jiraiya at the time as well though, to the point where he couldn't properly control his chakra ? I know what you're saying Andy, but in all seriousness, if Jiraiya had transformed into his Hermit Mode during that fight, I think Snakey was pretty much dead. Meh, as Mike [Shinmaru] said, there seems to be a lot of retcons taking place in Naruto to explain/justify everything. I don't really care one way or the other how Sasuke's strength measures up as compared to his team-mates, I'd just like to know exactly where he fights in the grand scale of things power-wise.

Seems my vote has tipped the scales in Primas' favour, though I realised just after doing so that it would mean making Bavaria the future queen... *Smacks head off the nearest solid object* ...any chance I can change my vote to Juvenus ? Anyway, I've finally caught up with everything that's been going on, and I must say there've been some very interesting plot twists, especially James' with Vincent, that was brilliant. I'll post as soon as I can, and it's going to be probably a bit longer than usual, as there are going to be a few surprises in store.
-
That being the case, wouldn't it be far simpler for him to just create his own army using the fully developed hougyoku and then kill off all the original espada (or have them killed off by ryoka, perhaps?), that way his new army could be fully groomed according to his standards and methods and there would be no worry of insurrection? Doesn't that just feel like him? He might keep Gin around, though I think a standoff between those two would be highly intriguing.
Perhaps, after all, he does plan to eventually have all the Espada made up of Vasto Lorde class Arrancar, so perhaps him allowing the Shinigami to think they've crippled his ability to fight is exactly what he wants. It's a big gambit though, if that is the case, if too many of his Espada are killed off, it'll make him potentially vulnerable, and many great dictators have died from underestimating their opponents. It'll be interesting to see where this all leads in terms of Aizen's ambitions.

As I told you over AIM D, Neil's death was a great piece, I just like everything about it, the pace, the imagery, it all just fits very well together, not that I'd expect anything less out of you. ^_~
Other than some things at the very beginning of the time skip, we've never seen Sasuke's training over those two and a half years. Anything could have happened, but I'm starting to wonder what exactly went down during that time. Anyone else feel this way?
Yeah, I'm pretty curious about what Sasuke acquired from his time with Orochimaru, as he seems to have out-paced his former teammates by leaps and bounds in terms of power and ability. I wonder though, how much as Itachi's failing sight is affecting this fight. Depending on how bad it actually is, Sasuke's apparent strength level mightn't be as great as it appears, after all, he beat Orochimaru only because his body was failing him.
I'm sorry. Apparently, sarcasm is harder to express through text than I thought.:animesmil
Heh, my bad, it didn't seem to read like sarcasm, as you made the point about despite the Espada being powerful, not one good-guy has died yet, as opposed to all the bad-guy fatalities. You have to wonder if this isn't all just part of Aizen's plot, I mean obviously if his best troops are getting slaughtered, he shouldn't just disappear as if it doesn't affect him. He's already proven a master strategist after all.
-
Or, Kubo might kill him. 50/50. We haven't had a "good guy" die in a while, neh?
I don't think it's going to happen, not only because if Kenpachi dies, then Ichigo and everyone else there apart from Orihime dies too, and that would bring the manga to a rather sudden close, but also because I can't see Kenpachi going down from a single sword strike, he's just too badass for it to happen. Remember, the last time Kenpachi actually admitted defeat was when his sword was broken by Ichigo, Nnoitra may have cut him fairly deep, but until that sword breaks, I'm not counting Kenpachi as out. Hopefully TC is right and this will push Kenpachi to a higher level where he simply has to communicate with his sword.

God damn the Uchiha and their genjutsu, it's getting really frustrating having to doubt everything you see. I'm looking forward to actually seeing Amaterasu first hand, last time we only saw the after-effects and from the way Jiraiya described it, that black fire must be pretty damn powerful. Seriously, I hope this isn't just another genjutsu, though Zetsu's reaction would seem to indicate it isn't.

I just wanted to post here to say I probably won't be able to post in Almagest until this weekend at the soonest, unfortunately I've exams at the moment and just don't have the time to make RPG posts. I'll try to keep abreast of everything that's happening in the story though. Josh, I have a small issue with the way you've portrayed Daedalus in your post. Even if himself and Fonty are not very close, I'm certain Daedalus wouldn't snap at him over something as simple as who's going to take Magitech over after he dies, in fact with his condition I imagine it's something he'd be seriously considering. If you want to have Fonty express an interest in selling Magitech I imagine that might make Daedalus a bit angry, as he sees it as something that ties the family together, much like Rosengard. But I don't think Daedalus would actually lash out physically or verbally over it, maybe just express a distaste at Fonty's intentions and a will to not let it happen.
I suppose this was a whole "lay off Sasuke" thing, but I really didn't intend it to be. I'm pretty on the fence about him now, heh.
Sure you are Kei *cough*fangirl*cough* Heh, just kidding. ^_~ You and TC both make fair points about how all of the character's styles are reflectant of their sensei's, with the exception of Naruto and Jiraiya, aside from the Rasengan and the toad summoning jutsu, which hopefully he has learned some more of, as that boys repertoire is getting painfully repetitive. No, I'm not trying to start another argument, just stating an opinion. For Sasuke though, I simply expected him to really go out and develop a very personal style, yes taking elements from his teachers. I mean Sasuke was constantly portrayed as a genius who picked things up so easily, so I just expected a little more experimentation out of him. I suppose it just comes down to, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
As long as you have a basic understanding of the Avatar universe then you should be fine. We've got a couple people participating who have never even seen the show before. :P
Alright thanks.
By the way, have we established what happens when Shinigami die? Does their reiatsu just disappear or do they get reborn on Earth?
I think that when Shinigami die, they're reincarnated back to Earth as new people, even the ones who were born in Soul Society in the first place. It's all part of that whole balance things, souls in motion between the two worlds, and Shinigami are really just powerful souls.
If I recall, Kenpachi said that the old guy stated winter because he thought they needed 4 months to pass through that thing Urahara made, when Urahara only needed a month. Not the exact words, but it's something along those lines.
My bad, I'd completely forgotten it was to stabilise the Garganta.
I do agree it gets old when we see awesome characters simply mimicking their teachers, but it's only realistic that Sasuke would have incorporated some of Orochimaru's techniques into his fighting style. And, let's give Kishi a break. At least he's showing us variants of snake-jutsu that are new.
I don't think anyone didn't expect Sasuke to use some of Orochimaru's jutsu, it's just that Sasuke seems to be incapable of creating his own techniques, which is a little lame. I mean his early taijutsu style was borrowed from Lee, his Chidori came from Kakashi and his snake techniques are from Orochimaru. Really his only "original" moves were the Katon jutsu he used to use which came from the Uchiha clan. It just seems he's using the Sharingan's Copy function a little too much. It's not a bad thing necessarily, it is his fighting style after all, I just wish we'd get a little more originality out of him. After all, he's not called Copy Ninja Sasuke is he ? Compare that with Itachi who uses only his own techniques, or at least those of the Uchiha clan. It's pretty obvious I'm not a fan of Sasuke isn't it ? ^_^'
Sasuke could and perhaps has lost an eye, but not both. Kishimoto wouldn't strip his favorite character like that.
While I get the feeling it could happen TC, it'd actually be really lame if Kishi did it because we'd end up with a situation where the three major established Sharingan users would all only have the one eye i.e. Kakashi, Sasuke and Itachi (him being blind in the other). Same for Tobi, as until the mask comes off, I'm not convinced the body is actually Madara's original as not Obito's, hence the cycloptic nature of his Sharingan. Besides, Sasuke isn't cool enough to pull off an eye-patch or large scar. That requires a badassness he will never possess. Neji perhaps, but not Sasuke.
Don't get me wrong. I'm enjoying the interchange. Itachi is definitely being portrayed as absurdly powerful. And Sasuke has some freaky Orochimaru-esque moves.
That's one of the things that's disappointed me the most about this fight so far, that Sasuke is using none of his own original moves, they're all variants of moves he knew already i.e. Chidori from Kakashi and the snake-jutsu from Orochimaru. I really expected after two and a half years he'd display something new in this fight, I mean we saw stuff from Jiraiya nobody ever even dreamed of, and yet Sasuke for being a genius is just spamming the same moves he's always used. It's a little lame, I want to see something that shows his treason was worth it.
I just hope they don't turn Nnoitra into one of them whiny villains (like Cell, Frieza) because he's on the losing end.
After all the trash-talking his done
about how strong his hierro is, I really hope he doesn't just die straight away. I mean seriously, Yamamoto is looking more an more foolish with every Espada that's killed, yeah I mean Yamamoto and not Aizen. His idea to wait until Winter and actually give Aizen time to awaken the Hyogoukou, due to the fact he assumed the Arrancar were so powerful to fight directly is backfiring badly. Had he supported Ichigo right away and assaulted Aizen before his powerbase was established, the war would have been averted entirely.
Kei, can we we just do away with the spoiler tags same as we did with the Naruto thread and just add a warning in the thread title ? It's kind of annoying to have to spoiler one thread and not the other.
-
Just read Chapter 308, and well, can't say it wasn't unexpected.
I thought Nnoitra for all his bragging about strength might actually pose a decent challenge to Kenpachi. His own little eyepatch trick was pretty clever, but in the end against a brutal fighter like the 11th Squad Captain it really wasn't going to work any more than one time. I have to admit, the second Nnoitra cut off Kenpachi's eyepatch by accident with that strike, I just laughed, whatever chance the poor bastard had in his unreleased form against Kenpachi died at that second. I wonder will he just die now after that slash, or actually release ?

You're there Kei, this is definitely one of those fights where we can't really be sure what's going on. God damn Uchiha and their genjutsu. Logically it does seem that Itachi is going to get his "light", and this time he at least had the decency to apologise beforehand. Heh, not that it makes it better, but it something at least.

I'm interested in joining Stephen, but I'm pretty new to Avatar. Would this require a fairly in-depth knowledge of the series in order to participate properly ? I've just finished watching the eighth episode as I type this.
Well Gavin, Daedalus cannot be sure that Nellie is dead, but I understand his urge to find Gadget. I bet Vincent and Macey will want to know where he went to, as well. ;D
He of course can't be sure, but he knows it's not like his daughter to simply disappear, especially given her role as the Princess' protector. I didn't mean that he would realise straight away, but after a day or two, Daedalus will simply add two and two together to reach the most obvious conclusion. It's simply the same nature that made him believe Leonhart was dead.
