Embarrassing & Yet Fun Things That You Do
Gavin replied to Rachmaninoff's topic in General Discussion
Moonwalking in public bathrooms, there I admitted it. :p Seriously, it's almost like an illness, any time I'm in a public restroom and there's nobody there, I moonwalk backwards out of the stall. Apparently I was drunk at a friend's birthday party and did it in a packed bathroom, though on the plus side I got four drinks for it afterwards. Singing in public, not loudly, but if someone was to pass me in the street they'd probably be able to hear me singing to myself. Favoured song: Hadaway's "What is Love ?". -
... because it's her body. The guy's "little trooper" making it through isn't really that taxing on the man, he's can be asleep and happily dreaming when his soldiers get through the defensive lines. You know, the rocket's red glare and bombs bursting in air? He isn't involved in that past the euphoria of dropping them off at the front gate to the castle. The entire siege he can't control one way or the other, it's in the hands of his little army. I think that is a sufficient number of war analogies for reproduction at the moment.
For some reason, I got a mental picture of the flag raising scene at Iwo Jima reading that... Even creepier, my birthday is on it's anniversary... -

Writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Just a couple of things I was iffy on, though... -
Fred's death, if only because I love the Weasley twins so very much (I would say they're actually my favorite characters in the entire series), and getting hit by a blown-up wall is a lame way to go out. It seemed like he died just for the shock value of it, frankly, and it seemed a bit unnecessary to me.
-
The disappointing lack of redemption for Malfoy. Yeah, he was really disturbed by what Voldemort was doing, he tried to avoid IDing Harry and his friends, and he tried to keep Crabbe and Goyle from killing Harry (maybe using Voldemort's wishes to mask his own desire to keep Harry alive), but I don't think any one thing totally redeemed Draco. Oh well, at least everyone can imagine him with a receding hairline, haha.

Agreed and agreed. On the first point
I thought I'd read it wrong the first time, I was like WTF ?! It seemed to have been done for shock value, like Tonks and Lupin dying and creating another poor orphan boy. Hell most of the damn Tonks family died in that book.
On the second point
, I wasn't really expecting a big redemption from Malfoy, it just didn't seem his style after Half Blood, but that said, him fighting a few of his dad's old friends wouldn't have gone amiss. And what was with his son's name, Scorpius ? Come on, how lame is his family with names. I imagine it might have been Pansy Parkinson's idea.
-
Writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Gavin replied to Lady Asphyxia's topic in Creative Works
Just finished the book, total read time was somewhere in the region of five and a half hours including breaks. It wasn't my favourite book, and honestly I felt that it was at the start far too slow paced, almost trudging even and then about a hundred or so pages before the end really sped up to an almost uncomfortable pace.
Maybe it's the fact that they weren't in school
and it couldn't really have a set pace because of that. I really agree with most of the things Lady A disliked, MAJOR SPOILERS but I'm going to add
Snape's death to it as well. Primarily because I liked him as a character and was happy that he at least got his redemption and a little more character development, though his death did suck majorly.
I was kind of hoping
that he'd stay on as headmaster in a more favourable light.
Also
Percy's reintroduction was pointless. He returned too late in the book to do anything but cause me to wonder WTF ?
-
Oh, and Gavin, that just goes to show yet another reason why Firefox pwn's Explorer.
Maybe, but the main reason I've stuck with Explorer is it allows me to access pages offline which Firefox doesn't, which for RPing is quite handy as you don't accidently overwrite something someone else was doing.
Some people binge drink, some develop eating disorders, some take it out on others, dont you think self harm is a safer way than any of those?
Like so many other things it's subjective, one slip of that blade and yes it does become far more dangerous than any of the others. But even if we're to put that aside, cutting yourself is no safer than any of the other options you've presented, a more silent way perhaps, but no safer.
-
Personally I see self-harm as being one of the most dangerous and foolish ways of dealing with pain/stress/anxiety. Perhaps that came out a tad more blunt than I'd intended, but having gone through fairly bad depression myself a few years ago, I know the best way of dealing with pain and stress is to deal with the sources of your problems, rather than just trading one pain for another as you do with self-inflicted injuries. It may not be an intention cry for help, but once you start cutting yourself, even if you cover it up, you are subconsciously telling people there's something wrong with you.

Saw it in Tasmania last year with my cousins, along with Wolf Creek which was in my opinion a far scarier film than The Exorcism of Emily Rose. In reality, I'd say EoER was actually more of a psychological thriller than a horror film, as there were very few moments that were of a horror nature. Tom Wilkinson's performance was top notch, as was Jennifer Carpenter's. All and all it was better than I expected, but then from horrors I never really expect much.
I'm loving how the thread is four pages in, and practically everybody are avoiding to utter the One Name Over Them All. Yes, the Almighty One-Winged Angel, the Secret Daydream of all Gamer Boys, the Epitome of the Power of Evil, the Ultimate Mommy's Boy: Sephiroth.
No way !!! Sephiroth was cool, but he'd get utterly pwned by the true ultimate videogame villain and all-time screen legend: Darth Vader. Seriously, let Sephy call his meteor and watch Vader annihilate it with the either the Force or a Death Star.
Oh and Des, even though you mention the stop button. Usually my internet doesn't just automatically load the text first, it seems to be a combination of pictures and text loading at the same time. So hitting that stop button results in part of the text not loading as well.
Yeah, I think the hitting the stop button only works if you're using Firefox, which as far as I remember always loaded up text before it loaded up images. With IE it just loads everything together, actually kinda surprised that Microsoft didn't borrow that little aspect of Firefox, seeing as they included almost everything else.
You're wrong. ;) Things will most likely change due to the upgrade and better plug ins to deal with advertising/porn bots. But until the change I was easily removing several per week and that does not count the ones that other Category Mods or Admins removed. I suppose the reason it's hard to imagine is that usually we get to them pretty quickly. So they rarely lasted more than say an hour or two on the boards before they were dealt with.
Heh, so I'm wrong, there really is a first time for everything. Just kidding. :p Seriously on the whole zero post count accounts, I remember a while back James deleted a bunch of them that had never been used and assumed it was just the same case again.

Reading was definitely my favourite pastime when I was a kid, I'd easily go through a few books in a weekend if the mood took me. The earliest book series, if you could call them books, I got into were the Mr. Men books by Roger Hargreaves, which I can still read with a smile to this day. Enid Blyton was another early one, and I remember reading the Famous Five and The Wishing Chair series. I read a fair portion of the Goosebumps series as well, primarily the Monster Blood ones. I also went through probably 90% of the Bantam era Star Wars novels at different stages, most of which I can't seem to find anywhere except eBay.

Honestly, while I'd never really consider cosmetic surgery for anything other than necessary stuff, I don't really have a problem with others getting it for their own purposes. Sure it's vain and, from what I've heard, can be addictive but people's own opinion of themselves is far more powerful than other people's. For all we know many of those gorgeous people may see themselves as ugly inside. Of course it's all likely they're all just vain.
Plus, now I can play DDR more efficiently and without males starring at a bouncing chest.
I thought I sensed a great groan of dismay in the Force a while ago...
So there you have it. Eating Shellfish, wearing clothing of mixed materials, Tattoos, Shaving your sideburns, and eating meat with blood in it (I'm sure some of you fundamentalist Christians occasionally enjoy a rare steak) are also condemned in Leviticus, but no ones gives a **** about them.
Wow, out of all five of those, I'm not in breach of any of them as:

I'm allergic to shellfish, finding that out the hard way in Australia last year.
Haven't got any tattoos.
Always have meat cooked to "well done", especially steak.
Haven't shaved in about a week.
And

Am currently wearing only a cotton shorts and t-shirt set (Homer Simpson FTW).
Hah, better luck next time Levictus.
I was thinking maybe we should follow lines of evening out the scales, sense the fights that you have described would be, well, nearly indescribable on an even scale. A samurai verses a bionic future super cyborg seems hardly fair to me.
What is the samurai's name is Jack ? I think the cyborg is the one who's pretty screwed then. :p Just kidding Mike, I actually agree with you in trying to keep fights evenly matched so one player doesn't dominate another. I suppose one option would be to make the quality of writing as high a factor in winning as the actual combat itself.
And if you don't care about the images but you still want to see the rest of people's signatures, you can always use the stop button in your browser after the text has been loaded.
You could also untick the show signatures box in your options, I imagine that would have much the same effect.
Actually that's not entirely accurate. If someone joins and posts (I wuv sessy so much!) With a ton of smilies attached, deleting said post returns their count back to zero. The same goes with spam and porn bots. They did post at one time, but now that count is zero due to the spammy/offending posts being removed. So the number of people who post once or twice and leave is much higher than 30.
I knew that already, I was just amazed there were so many empty accounts, as I can't imagine we've had that many spammy posters and porn bots, but maybe I'm wrong.
And I agree that once all the new changes are in place that the 550x120 would be nice, but too much more would be an eyesore in my opinion. After all I come here to read the posts, not to stare at people's banners. lol
QFT. Having been a 26.4 Kbps user not too long ago I know there's nothing more annoying that having to wait and extra two minutes while the page loads up dozen different banners. Honestly though, I don't even really see the need for an increase in the banner sizes, but then I've never really had a major interest in them.

Writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
But wouldn't it be weird if
Dumbledore hadn't died?

You don't know how much I hope that's true,
but after the whole funeral thing, I can't imagine him making a resurrection, it'd be too Gandalf-ish.
-
Currently, I?d say I?m about an 8. I?m in a fairly good mood, feeling relaxed and enjoying life for what few pleasures it offers freely. On the flip-side I?m got some writing to do, which though it?ll fun, requires a bit of effort and is niggling away at my back of my mind.

Can I say "freaking awesome idea" ? Seriously, I've been in the mood to be part of a mass spar since Kumite fizzled out of existence and was relegated to OB lore. Just one question Vicky, if we're allowed any kind of character, how are we going to ensure that fights are fairly even ? I mean you couldn't put a samurai against and Jedi and expect that he'd have any chance at winning. That said, we need to have a pirate vs. ninja spar, just to settle that debate once and for all.

User Names: Because Repeat Threads Are Good For You!
Gavin replied to SunfallE's topic in General Discussion
I suppose I'm in the same boat as SunfallE, given unusual nature of my handles outside of OB which is usually 'Zeitgeist Glee' or some variety of it, so chances are if you see a username like that on a forum you browse, it's me. Unsurprisingly Zeitgeist Glee is my AIM handle and my MSN username, though there's an underscore As to how I came up with the name, well honestly I'm not really sure. Back a few years ago I was a bit infamous for changing my AIM handle to something I felt reflected me a little better. When I changed my username to Gavin, my own first name which was something of a fashionable thing to do among my friends at that time, I decided my handles didn't fit any more. Originally I was going with joke names or ones that reflected my Irish heritage, but when they either didn?t fit or were taken I kinda went outside the box. Anyway, after watching the film Swordfish and hearing one of the hacker guys use the term Zeitgeist, I decided I liked the sound of it and added Glee to act as the second half, as Zeitgeist is nearly always taken on sites. Funnily enough, though Glee fits with the word Zeitgeist in meaning, it was completely unintended as the Glee refers to something other than the concept of happiness. After that I?d found the name that expresses me perfectly and have been using it for probably 2 years at this stage. As for OB, well that one I?ve already explained. Gavin is my first name and at one stage a lot of Oldies decided to change their usernames to their first names, as mostly people just referred to them by them. As well as that, I think by then, we weren?t really just people who were reflected by their taste in videogames or anime anymore. Other usernames, there?ve been plenty of them, I started off as Majin Gogeta in September/October 2001, created a new account as Shadow Demise in November and did the same again in December becoming Red XIII. This was all before people were able to change usernames of course, when that was introduced I became Outcast, later changing to Lynx, then Kane and finally my current nom de guerre. And that as they say is a wrap. Personality wise I don?t think I?ve changed very much, at the start I was fairly shy, not really sure how to express myself to others but still, I think anyway, honest and fun-loving. Nowadays I?m fairly relaxed and uninhibited, though being married to Raiha will do that to you, I love you too honey ;) and still up for some fun times with other members writing in the Arena.
