What's with the "girl wearing her boyfriend's shirt" fetish? ~Dagger~
I think all girls (even if it's at a deep, deep, never-tell-anyone level) crave being marked by their boyfriend. I've never met a girl who wasn't turned in some way when their boyfriend got protective, or they got to wear their boyfriend's letter jacket or hoodie. Centuries of female role or biology? Dunno, but it's just true. :3
I've got to admit it's never really bothered me, because I guess based on Alex's assertions, I'm one of the few guys who doesn't pay that much heed to what a girl looks like as opposed to her personality. I'd say it's probably more likely that women are less shallow than men, but I know plenty of women who make puddles seem deep by comparison. But really, all this thread is going to do is make people who agree seem really bitter and shallow.
I was more interested in the sexism in it, but I guess only girls think of that way. I don't know, it's a big mess because people will bring in scientific things and argue that it's just the way things will be, but I still think there's a level of sexism to it. Is it shallow the people think good looking people should date each other? One some levels, yeah, but it's just the way humans thinks. We like things that match. :L

I usually dislike the anime character+sharp graphics in banners, but this doesn't make me think about it. I like the balance of the banner, although it'd be cool to see more colors (like the bit of orange you have there in the background). But mostly, you're great at graphics! :) Have you thought about doing a piece for the Graphic Worm?

I was just talking about physical relationships between guys and girls who are dating with a friend, and I thought it was an interesting topic. And before anyone smashes me on being mean, this argument just has to use blunt words. How do you feel about ugly guys who date pretty girls, or when ugly girls date pretty guys? I have no problem in the world about it at a primal level, but lately I get irritated when I see uglier guys always getting together with gorgeous girls due to the sexist connotations. Even in the media, the average Joe is being glorified, getting hot chicks, and winning in the end. But when was the last time we saw an average Jane getting all of it? Even shows/movies that have what's supposed to be an average girl all have beautiful actresses behind the character, and when the character is ugly, the actress is great looking in real life. Any thoughts?

I have no idea how one would go about vectoring, but I know it's a timely and difficult process, especially for a realism piece. Cartoon vector art must be hella easier, right? So great job! :) I admire the fact that you spent 8 hours on one piece of art. @_@ (Was this your first try at vector?) The only advice I'd give would be to 1) make your outlines more clean so that there isn't unwanted traces of lines left, and 2) add more highlights/shadows in the facial area.

I want to nominate Juuthena, simply because of her quality of posting, as well as how well-liked and remembered she was. I don't think she was a ever a staff member, but she was probably more popular than any of the mods at that time. Mostly I just remember her being super nice to everyone and having a great post quality, and the fact that people liked her just because of her, and not her position.

I'm not incredibly sure, but I'll go ahead and say there isn't any other anime drawn in the DN style. I don't think Madhouse uses signature style when making anime based off of manga, so in Death Note's case, they copied Takeshi's style.
Well some of my purchases could be considered outrageous since spending over $10,000 for an instrument is expensive. But since playing the cello is what I do, it doesn't seem that way to me.
Music makes people crazy passionate sometimes. Especially string players, lol. Do you play for an orchestra? I have a similar outrageous purchase. $3,000 for a cello, which was a fine price for the quality instrument I got, but I quit orchestra a year later and joined newspaper. >_0.

Anime Subliminal Anime : Behind the Scenes
eleanor replied to Darktigerpack17's topic in Otaku Central
Lol. Oh, Freud. Sometimes I love him, sometimes... well. Yeah, Anno did really seem to like him, I guess. You can probably also add the Oedipus Complex to Eva, since it can be applied to about any show with father/son problems, ha. And the episode titles are sometimes phrased from Freud. I heard that RahXephon uses literary works as inspiration, but I have no idea which. I've also listened to a lot of comparison between RahXephon and Eva, but the only RahXephon I've seen was a special program that summarized the series. If anyone out there is a RX fan, are there similar psychological themes? -
Anime Subliminal Anime : Behind the Scenes
eleanor replied to Darktigerpack17's topic in Otaku Central
Naruto is rife with Japanese mythology. I don't know any off the top of my head, but most everything in it has loosely connected to some sort of legend/icon, which isn't surprising since it deals with that genre. I guess I'll add the Jungian themes that are in Utena and Ouran Host Club, since I'm fan of Carl Jung. It's not incredibly subtle or anything; the roses and the characters represent certain egos or archetypes. At one point in Host Club, the twins are seen reading a Jung book. Thought it was a fun tidibt. P: -
That's what I meant by meaningless. For them it's not the same since what they consider acceptable is different. ^_~
Ah, I thought you talking about generational differences. :o

Let's talk about drug addiction(very serious discussion)
eleanor replied to FLCLrules's topic in General Discussion
So in all of this "drugs makes you bad" crap, where do the people that do drugs (or drug in my case) and haven't suffered side effects (like losing friends, ruining your education and all that random stuff) fit in?
I don't think anyone is really talking about people who use drugs recreation-wise and don't get addicted. They're all talking about people who are addicted. -
Heh, exactly. Perhaps I'm not getting my point across well enough, but that's what I'm getting at. By labeling ourselves Otaku most of us here aren't going by the actual literal translation of what it's suppose to mean. In America most of the people I know use it because we like anime, not because we think we are truly obsessed with it. In other words it's a catch phrase for us, not one meant to represent it's origins.
Yeah, I know. I was just saying it's too liberal to apply that to any cultural slang.
-
No, only that our definition of butthead could be wildly inaccurate due to their lack of understanding the behavior that would lead to us calling them that. ^_~ I could call someone that, just as they might call me an Otaku, but in the end, it just might not be accurate. I'm saying that the behavior that I would call someone a butthead over to someone else wouldn't necessarily be 'bad' behavior due to cultural differences. In other words in that sense we aren't true Otaku as they would consider it and I'm sure that for butthead on some level that would be true for them too.
Even considering cultural differences, there are just some actions that are universal. If your whole life revolves around one obsession, it'd be safe for someone to call you an Otaku. Cultural connotations aside, it's a word that means being obsessed about something, particularly anime/manga/hentai. You don't really have to be born in Japan to be called one. I think I'm taking this too seriously. XD Though I'm not defending anyone in this thread, lol. Language is meant to be taken by others and made their own, because that's pretty much how it evolves. Writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
eleanor replied to Lady Asphyxia's topic in Creative Works
That's not entirely true.
Not everyone in Slytherin is pure-blood; neither Voldemort nor Snape were pure-blood, and yet they were accepted. And besides Slughorn, there are other Slytherin's who are far from beyond redemption. Snape, of course, and Phinneas Nigellus Black, both of whom worked to bring about the downfall of Voldemort. And let's not forget Regulus Black, who sacrificed himself in an attempt to destroy a horcrux. There's also strong evidence that Tonks' mother, Andromeda, was a Slytherin. As for the Slytherin's all running... Phinneas himself said in OotP that a Slytherin will always choose to save his or her own neck. While this is certainly not absolute, it's a good rule of thumb; the Slytherin's didn't fight because they either didn't want to put their life on the line or didn't think Voldemort could be defeated. I'm not sure why you think the Ministry of Magic would interrogate retreating Slytherins and then throw them all into Azkaban; I doubt the Ministry would do that just because someone chose not to fight, especially with Kingsley in command.

You're right about the blood situation, but I was mostly talking about the students. I guess it's silly of me to expect something more from Rowling when she barely mentions other Slytherin students other than Draco and his gang... I thought a unity theme was going on, and the Slytherin students' betrayal of Hogwarts was slightly off to me. The last part of my post was a joke, although not one well portrayed. :L
-
No Otaku is used to describe someone who is from that country and raised in their culture as being obsessed. To turn around and call someone who's say American like I am or Australian like James is an Otaku... Well it just doesn't work since neither one of us is Japanese nor do we fit into what someone there would consider an Otaku. It's a catch phrase if you will since at this point it's out of context as far as it's originally meaning is. Even if people there are using it to be insulting towards others since on the flip side, they don't understand what we would consider obsessive behavior.
That's like saying we can't call Japanese people 'butthead', which probably originated in the US. Are you saying just because a language is different you can't use it to describe other ethnicities... ?

Writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
eleanor replied to Lady Asphyxia's topic in Creative Works

It had to do with the fact that Snape loved Lily, and I'd guess by extention anything that reminded him of Lily. Apparently Snape asking Harry to look at him before he died was so he could see Lily's eyes one last time.

I never realized that before. Now I have to go cry for another ten minutes over how heartbreaking this is. :animedepr
-
But that is meaningless to a parent who grew up in a country where that wasn't the case. Obviously there needs to be a balance of what you keep your kids from watching, but I'm saying that it's not so black and white as some of you are thinking. Many of you have grown up thinking all the violence, swearing, innuendo and everything else is normal. Keep in mind that for many of your parents... It's not.
I don't think it's necessarily meaningless. Granted, the media today is more sexual and violent than it was twenty years ago, but the violence/sexuality shown in the US is different from other countries.

Let's talk about drug addiction(very serious discussion)
eleanor replied to FLCLrules's topic in General Discussion
My opinion on people who drink/smoke/do drugs always goes through ups and downs. Sometimes I have no problem if people I know do it, and sometimes I want to punch their faces in when they tell me they drive around drunk or high.* For the majority of my life I looked down upon them. They irritated me in class, when they blocked the streets walking to the back of department stores to smoke, and whenever they advocated their "I don't give a crap about anything except getting high" attitude. Some of my best friends are incredibly anti-drugs/alcohol and basically view them as failures who don't have a future. But recently I've just grown to believe that others doing that kind of stuff shouldn't concern me, and that most of time it's to have fun with your friends. So mostly I don't care about them anymore, and not judge them. I used to a huge 'anyone who does drugs is a loser', but recently I've decided to change my view. *One thing I'll never change my mind about is people who drunk drive. 'Vehicular manslaughter' due to driving under the influence is crap to me. People shouldn't die because of the stupidity of others. -
Writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
eleanor replied to Lady Asphyxia's topic in Creative Works
So, now that a good amount of people are finished with the series, how do you rank the individual installments of the series? Here's my list: 1) Deathly Hallows 2) Prisoner of Azkaban 3) Half-Blood Prince 4) Order of the Phoenix 5) Goblet of Fire 6) Chamber of Secrets 7) Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite for the longest time (it was the first book in the series I read, and the story as a whole connects wonderfully and ends on such an exciting note), but Deathly Hallows is too good an ending for the series for me not to put it in first.
PoA used to be my favorite as well, but after a year of not touching the Harry Potter fandom, I re-read the series and this was how I ranked it: 1) Deathly Hallows 2) Half-Blood Prince 3) Order of the Phoenix 4) Goblet of Fire 5) Prisoner of Azkaban 6) Sorcerer's Stone 7) Chamber of Secrets That's not to say I dislike any of them! They're all great books. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the encyclopedia as well. It would be awesome to learn more about characters like Neville, Luna, etc. -
The biggest misconception others have about me is that I'm reserved and a bit of a wet towel. It's true to an extent- I don't enjoy talking with people I don't care for or anyone I don't see a future with relationship-wise (friendly), and small talk annoys me. But when I'm with my friends I usually get joke-yelled at by them for being too rowdy or excited, so I'm basically the complete opposite. :P And with people I don't know, I'm unfailingly polite and nice. However, once I become close friends with someone I just get very candid and less controlled. With teachers, lol. Whenever I'm just in a normal mood, my face looks like I'm bored out of my mind and a lot of teacher assume I dislike the class. Sometimes I do, but most of the time I enjoy listening rather than talking. And I really just don't like voicing my opinion in class unless the question somehow challenges the class or I'm personally interested in the topic. I'm only open when I'm with people close to me, so talking for the sake of talking is something I can't do very well.

Lol... at the midnight release of HP this year my friends and I had a rave party in the manga section. And annoyed the hell out of the people sitting there. :L Er, anyways. It's stupid that people judge before actually evaluating, and it's lame that a lot of Americans see anime as either 1) porn or 2) cheesy/bad shows like edited Pokemon, DBZ, etc. That misconception is ignorant, but I see where they're coming from. At my local B&N, they have this small table that showcases various manga/man-wha, and 2/3 of it consists of huge busts or some prepubescent girl's butt sticking up while she cleans the kitchen or cooks or whatever the hell. God, there's so much blatant sexism in anime, but that's for another topic. If I were a parent totally in the dark about anime/manga, and I saw those covers, I sure as hell wouldn't want my kid reading them. It's the first impression, and that's the biggest. There's such a huge difference between US and Japanese culture, and it's not easy to bridge. Japanese pop culture is exploding with a sexuality that just differs from any western kind. My mom has a problem with Japanese pop culture in general, because she hates overt sexuality (which you cannot deny exists in anime), but it's very broad. I mean, she hates American pop culture for its sexuality as well. Even I won't deny that Japanese pop culture is just really freaking odd to me. The whole lolita/chan thing weirds me the **** out sometimes, among other things.

1) SATs. They suck, they really do. 2) People who use 'gay' or 'retarded' as derogatory terms, because they can't choose from fifty other put-down words. 3) 'Elite' people, or internet people who think they're the **** because they've 'intellectual' and know perfect grammar.

Writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
eleanor replied to Lady Asphyxia's topic in Creative Works
My afterthoughts on Deathly Hallows, when the glow weared off.
Snape: I was giddy and stuff about him being 'good', but it's still debatable. I re-read the chapter of Snape's memories, and it's clear that if it weren't for Lily, he'd be another Death Eater. Even Rowling's writing makes him seem innocent but sinister at the same time, like how he watched Lily with an unmistakable greed. In the end, the only reason he works for Dumbledore is because he still loves Lily, and he cannot care for Harry because he's James's son. The question is whether or not that love allows him to be good, or if he acts only because of it. I suppose taking into consideration the theme of love conquering all, Rowling wanted to present Snape as a redeemed character because he loved, but it's nice that his character has depth. I still love him, though. His last words are usually the first things I remember when I think about Deathly Hallows. Fred dying is just heart-breaking. It means George will have to manage the shop alone, or perhaps with Lee Jordan, and that the brother he's lived by for all his life is gone. ;_; The description of George kneeling by Fred after he died and Mrs. Weasely across his chest is painful. The epilogue is still good but sort of eh to me. I was expecting something different, for sure, like an explanation of what the Trio went on to do career-wise, and what happened to the MOM and all the other character, but what Rowling gave us also fits. It's nice that Harry finally gets what I always missed out on, a family, and that life continued after the war. Stuff that Really Did Irritate Me: 1) Remus Lupin. Seriously, in the 3rd book he was amazing and my favorite character ever. But then he slowly becomes more and more off-putting with each book, and now I really just don't care that much for him. I still like him, sure, but the most we ever really got about him was "Lupin looked shabbier" or " '__________' said Lupin wearily". 2) Everyone in Slytherin is evil and there is no redemption, except for Slughorn (who is awesome lol). I just didn't get why everyone in Slytherin has to be a supporter of Voldemort. Ok, yes, it is Canon that everyone in Slytherin is pure-blood: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix For instance, Slytherin Took only pure-blood wizards Of great cunning, just like him... But it was lame that ALL of them left for Voldemort during the battle. Seriously, what was all this stuff about the Houses coming together and defending Hogwarts, and then not a single Slythering defends Hogwarts? And I think CUNNING implies that at least some of them were INTELLIGENT, and if they were AMBITIOUS, they would be AMBITIOUS to SAVE THEIR LIVES and not want to end of in a spiky cage being interrogated by the MOM and then sent to Azkaban. It's weird that Rowling likes to give everyone dimension...except the Slytherins.
-
New footage of Eva-01, new AT-field, etc. Getting used to the florescent green plates might take some time, lol, but I'm loving everything about the Rebuild.
