@ haruko girl The word 'cartoon' is an English term, so the connotation and suggestiveness might differ from Japan, but anime is still a form of cartoons. In addition, the idea of cartoons only being made to entertain kids should be dissipating... shows from Adult Swim, Family Guy, and South Park are all cartoons that kids shouldn't be watching. On the off side, I sort of agree with you at the same time, because when a lot of people seek to insult anime, they use the term 'cartoons'. Possibly because the mature-viewing cartoons in the US are mostly comedy shoes, while anime, a 'cartoon', also tackles serious themes. end @ haruko girl Anyway, I think cartoons in general are great. Even kids' shows. I don't know why some anime fans rag on Disney and stuff... anime was based off of Disney's animations in the first place. And classic Disney movies rock. :D
Wow, when I read that the first idea to come into my head was three years of fillers... thats to scary to even think of again. For me though, I am actually alright with fillers, even though I must watch all of these awesome battle scenes take place out in the manga as while cuddling in my "spechul" corner waiting to see the combat in the anime
, I mean come on! Naruto Vs Orochimaru fight will defintly be orgasmic!
So far though it seems as if there will be fillers through episode 197. It just seems kinda right to make them all end on episode 200 for some reason. Yet if they go over 200, I am going to Japan to do some horrible horrible things, anyone care to join me?
I'm pretty sure it'll go over 200... unless over in Japan they have no problems with fillers and don't announce when Naruto is getting back on track. However, my want to see Kakashi Gaiden animated is killing me. I just re-read volume 27 and I'm secretly dying inside. Also to address the fight scenes in Naruto... I really, really, really want to see another episode like 133. Before I watched 133 all I was hearing was ragging on the animation, but when I watched it I was blown away. I have no idea what the people who didn't like it were thinking, that's how much I'm willing to defend it. It was so much better than the normal quality of Naruto fight scenes. *wibble* Now that I think of it, if they did the same quality animation of 133 with the fight between
Sakura, Chiyo, and Sasori
I'd have a fangasm. The sheer amount of oppurtinities for fluid and quick animation makes me excited just thinking about.
Regarding filler episodes... I don't like filler, but I rather them have filler than catch up with the manga and diverge from Kishimoto's intended storyline. When anime overtakes the manga, it can have some disastrous results. They could end up with a big hit even doing things vastly different from the manga like in FMA's case, but do you want them to go off filler if it means different storylines and *shudder* never seeing the real, Masashi Kishimoto crafted ending in animated glory? Although, looking at the screenshots, glory is not the right word for that episode. >

If he does end up directing any of the future Harry Potter movies, I'd be excited as hell. His movies have always been consistently good, and I think he has a style that could mold very well with the Harry Potter universe. The movies have consistently gotten better (to an extent... I still think the 3rd movie outshines the 4th one), so having M. Night to lead it on would be very cool. Hell, anything better than the first two is great. I don't know whether or not it was Columbus's fault or the bad acting, but I die every time I have to watch either of them.

First off I have to say... you're amazing. More power to you that you've gone to such lengths to continue in a sport that you love and that you're ambitious enough to keep on going. As an outsider I'm not sure where I stand on where you should go with wrestling, and I don't want you to permanently injure yourself in some way. But if you really love the sport and you're willing to go all the way for it, give it your best. Good luck on everything.
O RLY? *grins* I should bring that up to my RoyEd loving friend...and the RoyEd pairers on FMA.com. >_>; *cough*
I have no idea if it's true. Whenever I look around in the FMA manga communities they say stuff like "whenever Arakawa sees a yaoi story she writes more het" and stuff, and people throw it out there, so I'm not sure. It's very possible, though. The FMA manga makes me like Ed/Winry more, since the anime never really had a chance to flesh it out. RoyEd, to me, is a pairing enjoyed for fangirl purposes only. Anything I see about them usually has to be funny or light-hearted, because I don't take them seriously. I also support Royai because it's the canon and I enjoy it by itself. :3 FMA, both manga and anime, has always been very canon-powered for me. The fandom itself doesn't do much to propel my interest, although I still like it.
o.o......Wouldn't have put it that way, but yeah thats what you did. I try to ignore them, but one person can only take SO MUCH! Since I have been in many conversations I have been in/around have gone something like this. Fangirl1: Oh hey! Lyke do you like FMA!? Fangirl:2 OMG! Fma?! Full metal alchemist! I love that show Edward is so hot _> But I think that exists in every fandom. I'm just surprised that you've found so much of it in the FMA fandom. I've never encountered that before. The FMA LJ communities are all pretty cool. Mostly we laugh over random crack people will come up with. :3 The main problem I have with the FMA fandom is snootiness. Basically I think LJ communities rock over all other ones. v_v Also, RoyEd seems to be more prominent, lol. I heard Arakawa hates RoyEd, though. XD P.S. OT, but incestuous pairings are just hilarious to me. The ItaSasu fandom in Naruto makes absolutely no sense. Someone will be giving a great back-up to like Team 7 OT3 and then it's like "omg ItaSasu!...because...they are brothers...! :D" Everyone else: huh.
I have another question about the fight between
Mustang and Bradley. What was the deal with the skull?[/SPOILER'] Did I miss something earlier in the series?

It's revealed earlier in the series (I think it's episode 34) that if you have the remains of the person a homunculus is based off of, the humunculus can't move and you're able to kill it.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Winry Rockbell I'll be the first to say I find her a LOT more tolerable in the manga, but since this is in anime discussion, I'll stick to the anime variation. I like her for her dedication to the Elric's. She'd lay her life down for them! I also find it funny when she goes on her automail spazzes. XD She needs to stop wailing on Edward's head so much with that wrench, though. o_O She's gonna give the poor boy irreversible brain damage. XD As with Rose, I think she's underappreciated because of the legions of Ed fangirls. That's not to say ALL Ed fangirls hate both her and Rose, but whereever I go, it's "WINRY MUST DIE LOLZ" or words to that effect. e_e;
I really can't think of any plausible reason why someone would hate Winry that much. She's one of my favorite female characters from anime. Sort of OT, but yaoi/shounen-ai fangirls who demonize every female character irritate me incredibly. It's sort of ridiculous and pathetic sometimes.
Naruto - Uchiha Sasuke The Naruto community is rather evenly divided on Sasu here. It's either you love the guy and feel sorry for him, or hate his freaking guts. I fall into the "I love him and feel sorry for him" category. I really do feel sorry for him! Why, I won't go into here, for most people most likely know what's happened to him. I think he's underappreciated by most because of his attitude. Granted, he has a stinky attitude, but without it, he wouldn't be Sasuke! And that, my friends, would be dull. ((And many of my friends, whom I doubt any of you know, hate Sasuke. And it annoys me to no end. Yes you're free to have your own opinion, but...))
Oh god, so true! I never really liked Sasuke and I've often made jabs at him while talking about the latest manga chapter or anime episode, but I really don't hate him. He's just easy for me to make fun of, what with all the emo and duckbutt jokes flying around. For anyone reading this who hates Sasuke... uh, his brother massacred his entire family. That should be enough. Naruto and Sasuke are, to an extent, two sides of the same coin. They chose to react to their surroundings in different ways, but their problems have similar roots. Personally I like Naruto better, but I don't hate Sasuke. Even though he can still irritate me.
Naruto - Haruno Sakura Why do I like her? I think she kicks butt. Alot of butt. XD I also find her "Inner Sakura" very amusing, for I can be that way myself. But why do I think she's underappreciated? Many people seem to think she's annoying. I don't find her annoying at all! Plus, every anime has to have one of those annoying characters! It just wouldn't be complete without her. XD I also like her hair...BEFORE she cut it. *cough* >_>
Actually I think a lot of the Naruto fandom have taken a liking to Sakura recently after the time jump. Before the time jump she was still progressing from the brat she was from the very beginning. Her being a superficial brat in the beginning is just true; I don't think anyone can argue with that. Not even Kishimoto, because if he didn't intend to make readers think that, he failed. But after Sasuke basically gives her a mental ***** slap and during the Wave Country arc, we see progress. Her hidden turmoils of being largely left out in Team 7 and her (mentally) self-proclaimed "inferior" skills as a ninja was never really taken in well by most of the fandom pre-time jump because most of the fans already dismissed her as a generic annoying female character. ...Which she lived up to from time to time. The time jump just provided fans with a huge development in character, so she's very likable. I don't think the Sakura hating is still that alive today. A note on the hair: so much better-looking short! :3 *disregards all symbolic meaning*
I don't know why but after seeing the Anime version of Full Metal Alchemist, I some how started to hate it, not the show though. I think I mostly hated some of the things that the fans did. Yeah you know what I am talking about.
... What did we do? :/

Manga Naruto Manga [Warning: Spoilers]
eleanor replied to Ryo the Tactician's topic in Otaku Central
Uchiha History theory: That was probably the best theory I've ever read in any fandom because it was so organized in its back-up/evidence and it looked very thought through. Of course it being theory means there are definite holes and details in it that could be picked apart, but Yasha did a great job in proving that there is a connection between the Uchiha clan and Tengu. It makes me love Kishi more. It's similar to Grave's theory, another one on NarutoFan Forums (http://forums.narutofan.com/showthread.php?t=27458), but Yasha's seems to have more evidence and solidity. -

I'll hop in this thread for a bit. If you have Comcast Digital Cable, you have the Anime Network for free On Demand, as well as this other Anime section (I forgot its name, but it has more obscure anime and clips from anime conventions or whatnot). A bunch of people here have already mentioned Netflix, which is always a good way to go. But uh... normal movie DVDs released in the US are usually about $20-25 when newly released. A newly released anime DVD with about 3-4 episodes is also usually about $20-25. It's good to periodically buy single DVDs rather than buy a whole series at once, unless you have the patience to really wait it out and watch for big price cuts on anime series. In addition, I'm not going to try and act like most of you don't have a bunch of fansubs on your computer. Adding to that, it's no secret that even when a popular anime is licensed, there will always be several good sources available.
Also, I really like the fan(fiction) community. It's smaller than I thought it would be, but everyone is nice. Even the people who write amazingly well and have frighteningly large thought processes on WK are not stuck up. It's nice to find something like that.
 I definately know what you're talking about. Do you think it's because it's a smaller fandom? The bigger a fandom gets, the snarkier it becomes. >_> Make a trivial offense and you can start an incredibly baseless argument. I *hate* it when people make LJ communities called "Elite [insert fandom name or etc.]" and you have to apply and 'prove' your intelligence. God, you know a fandom has died a little inside when something like that happens.

Source: Mugglenet.com Last week, M. Night Shyamalan told ComingSoon.net that he has put some thought into directing either of the final two Potter films. Today, our friend Melissa from Leaky has informed us that she's conducted an interview with Shyamalan which will be released this Sunday on their Potter podcast, PotterCast. In a preview posted on their site, the director states he would offer the "greatest protection" on the author's work. From the report: "The themes that run through it...the empowering of children, a positive outlook...you name it, it falls in line with my beliefs," he said. "I enjoy the humor in it. When I read the first Harry Potter and was thinking about making it, I had a whole different vibe in my head of it. [There would be] a lot at stake emotionally. The teaching of magic would be desperately needed, there would be a lot riding on it." M. Night was initially offered the directing job for the first Harry Potter movie, but it conflicted with his movie Unbreakable. He's simply interested in it, but it's definately not confirmed yet.

Art The Desktop Screenshots/Wallpapers Thread [image heavy]

Manga Naruto Manga [Warning: Spoilers]
eleanor replied to Ryo the Tactician's topic in Otaku Central
GAARA KUN!!! Chapter 315:
Not a lot happened, but it was still a good chapter. I can't believe I never noticed that the Kage Bunshin no Jutsu transfered knowledge, but I guess they don't really give you a lot of examples in the manga... I think it was pretty obvious that Naruto has a wind-type, considering I thought that the Rasengan was a wind-type in the first place...It would be cool if Naruto could use a Chakra ball of fire, though... "Yeesh...Jiraiya-sama, how the hell did you teach this kid a jutsu like Rasengan?"lol
WooT! :animestun

I was expecting something like lightning or earth, because of Naruto's... actually, I don't know. I was going to say stamina and strength, but that could apply to other elements. >_> But wind's cool. :3 Made me think of Avatar. I just have to say that Naruto really is stupid sometimes. Though I guess it was for the readers' sake, lol. It's so cheesy when manga/anime characters have to go "in case you didn't know, ______ enables me to [10 minute explanation]", but they do it for us dear fans. v_v For 1/10 of a second after I finished I was very afraid the paper would then do all the other four signs in the next chapter, revealing Naruto to be ALL POWERFUL OMG!!11. But then.... I don't want to think about it. :animesigh I loved how delighted Naruto looked when he said "I beat you in rock, paper, scissors." I know his face was like that because he realized he could learn things from his kage bunshin, but it was too funny. His face looked like he had been graced with the holy spirit or something.
-
Ok, I think we can stop with the "you are WRONG"s already.

Not exactly a book, but still definately worth a read. Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood and if you like it, Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return, both by Marjane Satrapi. They're graphic novels, but a departure from the conventional, and a great one at that. Amazon.com summary (click here for link): ...[the] story of a young girl's life under the Islamic Revolution... Satrapi's art is minimal and stark yet often charming and humorous as it depicts the madness around her... Iron Maiden, Nikes and Michael Jackson become precious symbols of freedom, and eventually Satrapi's rebellious streak puts her in danger, as even educated women are threatened with beatings for improper attire. Despite the grimness, Satrapi never lapses into sensationalism or sentimentality... It's just something you get sucked into after you first start reading it. I first read it when I went to an academic summer camp and during the breaks of my class I'd always be reading it.* The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini tells the story of two young boys living the 1907s Afghanistan, Amir and Hassan. Amir is the son of a wealthy business owner, and Hassan the son of Amir's father's servant. They grow up together as best friends, but after a traumatizing event the two separate. The rest of the novel focuses of Amir and the regret and pain he feels for the rest of his life, and the events that occur because of those feelings. Incredibly compelling, despite questionable plot turns... it's another book you read until you finish. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. Narrated by a 15-year-old autistic boy who is trying to solve the mystery of who killed his neighbor's dog. Funny and bittersweet, a.k.a a book that opens your eyes but doesn't overkill you in the process. Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer. Hilarious. No, really. I actually laughed out loud more than a few times during this book, which is one part of why I love this book so much. The story is about a young man from the US, incidentally also named Jonathan Safran Foer, who goes to Ukraine to try and find the woman who possibly saved his grandfather from the Nazis during WWII. Jonathan's search is aided by Alex Perchov (who serves as a Ukrainian translator), the narrator, Alex's grandfather, and a seeing-eye dog named Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. The novel actually has three parts. One story is in present-time and is narrated by Alex, who basically describes their search for the woman. The other, written by Jonathan, tells the history of a shetl (a village) in Ukraine via his anestors. The third part is actually letters written by Alex to Jonathan written in the future, after the search has finished and Jonathan has returned to America. It may seem like overkill, but if you do decide to read it, stick with it. When I first started, I was completely confused and sort of had a 'WTF is this' mindset until the third chapter or so. It'll grab ya in sooner or later and then you can't take your hands off of it. Jonathan Safran Foer is both smart and funny in his writing, and his talents are obvious throughout the whole novel. The first half of the book you'll be laughing it up, but by the end you'll be crying. So now that I've made this post incredibly and overly long, I'll just end it with some more recs. The four books I've talked about aren't necessarily my favorites, but I picked them because I thought they had the best chance for unviersal enjoyment, so here are more. :D Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt** Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami*** Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books by Azar Nafisi Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card**** *If you life it, check out Epileptic by David B. **If you like it- 'Tis by Frank McCourt ***If you like it- The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami ****If you like it- Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card, which I actually enjoyed more then Ender's Game. I feel horrible for leaving out 45203942 other books, but I'll stop my madness.

There are bigger racial concerns than Sony's new ad, which I'm sure had no racial undertones to begin with. When I first saw the ad, I thought the black woman was a man. Which I thought was cool. Point being that the first thing that didn't enter my mind was "that is racist". Also the whole thing about white being the new black is definately applicable when it comes to electronics and such. It's debatable, but white is aesthetically appealing on electronic products, an example being the Apple iPod when it first came out.

For those of you who read the manga, you already know about the 2.5 leap in time that passes through the series yeah?
Well I just realised that fillers have been on for over a year. (I believe it started sometime in the spring of 2005). What would be really odd/confusing/just plain mean is if the fillers were going to actually go on for the
2.5 years as said in the manga
I hope it doesnt though, because if it does I may have to go and hurt people
.... :<
Naw, because then they'd have to make fillers of Naruto training with Jiraiya. *chews nails* And Sakura training with Godaime. And. Yeah. >____>. Shoot me now. I WANT KAKASHI GAIDEN DAMMIT. *heave* I caught on sort of late into the Naruto fandom (around the time the Valley of the End arc episodes were being released), but has any filler period lasted this long? I'm guessing no, considering most of the fandom's pulling of hair about all the fillers. I'm guessing it'll get back on track around fall, though. If it's later... I mean, the manga's doing alright, but it's letting me down, so I'm just wishing the episodes will come out soon.

Mm, Weiss. I barely remember anything from the anime series, which was the only part of the Weiss fandom I partook in. I first watched it, though, because of my fangirlish self after seeing Aya. He was pretty. :3 Also I think I'm like 1 out 100 girls in saying that I do not find Yohji attractive in any ink-drawn person possibility. >_> I didn't actually watch the whole series, though. It wasn't exactly the greatest anime I saw... I felt it was more fanon powered than anything, and I never got into it. The drawing of the actual anime bothered me while I was watching it, and I started to skip through a lot of stuff, which is always a bad sign. I always thought the premise of the anime was cool, but the result could have been much better.

Korea launches 4 'test missiles' in less than an hour
eleanor replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
1984 is actually a really good book. I enjoyed it and i highly recommend it. Pick it up sometime. Well, there is one sure fire way to tell how good or bad we have it, and that's to go see how other people in the world have it. We have that option, the North Koreans do not.
I've read that book three times already. It's a great novel, yeah. But my main point was that I can't be the judge of how opressed or brainwashed or whatever the people of North Korea are when I barely know much about it. And at the same time, I can't truly judge how many people know about what's really going on, but I'm convinced there is a large sum of people who do know.
I don't parade it, neither have i suggested that you should. I'm simply saying that you should make it known when the subject somes up. I'd say the main reason somebody would freak out if somebody was from North Korea or not is because North Koreans are not allowed to leave their country.
Right, another big disagreement we have. I don't think other people in the US should care so much about what part of Korea we're from, which was I brought up the whole me being too idealistic thing. That's a big change that won't happen for a long time, but it's just something I tell others they should do. Of course that is based on me thinking others view North Koreans as anti-American or whatever, and I should take into consideration that some people are just curious. Mistake on my half.
Well when i said heritage i was just talking about general terms. A black person should be proud to be black, i should be proud to be South Korean and you should be too. Korea, North Korea, and South Korea are 3 totally different countries. What used to be in North Korea has changed a lot since the communist party took over. I can be proud that my heritage leads back to South Korea and then Korea, but not North Korea. How on earth are we being superficial by taking note of our fellow man's differences? Would you rather us all be the same?
I also have a different POV of heritage, then. Most of our culture came from Korea, and we all share the same roots. I really don't see a point in saying "I'm proud of my South Korean heritage". I'd rather just say "Korean". And by my line about South Korea's obsession with superficiality... I think you misinterpreted it. I was jabbing a finger at South Korea's pop culture as being overwhelmingly superficial. Moreso than any other country in the world, except possibly Japan.
