Heh. I love the title of this thread. I'm watching the first episode and pausing it as I write my inital reactions. Episode 1
OT: Song sucks. The girls are cute enough to make my eyes burn, though. :D The animation is... decent. I'll have to watch the rest of the show. Girls, We Need You! 1:41- Talking dog's voice hurts my ears. 1:43- Transformation sequence... Too many poses and with...gansta signs? 1:50- First fighting sequence. The animation budget seems to be set, considering the slow pace and stock images... somehow while in the air fighting at a minimal pace, the entire city below them was wrecked. 1:53- MS. SARA BELLUM IS NOT A REDHEAD! BLASPHEMY! 1:56- ... Ice cream sequence... I don't know whether to be laughing at the crackness of this show or to be irritated. Girls, Your Birth! 2:01- What happened to sugar, spice, and everything nice? :( 2:06- "Could it be? Could I be a transforming heroine?" *snort/laugh* 2:07- Only in Japan could this show be made... Oh, Buttercup. You and your gansta signs. As I force myself to laugh.
Ok, so for a kids' show I think it flies well. I don't think little kids would notice something like animation that much. Of course, I have no idea if it is made for them, because Japan is just inane to me like that sometimes. If it is made for kids... I dunno. I'd probably watch it. I don't feel like being harsh on this show, since I get the feeling it's not for my age group or older at all. The girls are insanely cute, I think you could get cavities from them or something. >_> I have to admit the fighting sequences were *very* slow and I skipped through a lot of it. The only thing that kept me interested throughout most of it were the character designs, and I'd have to say everything else was pretty mediocre at best. The humor is really crackish, but cute (how many times have I used that word so far?), although sometimes I didn't know how to react. I will probably never watch this show again, but I can see why some people would.

Korea launches 4 'test missiles' in less than an hour
eleanor replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
Sometimes a person's gut is wrong...like it is now for you. Sure, the people may start out as the same as every other person at birth. But i believe a person is shaped by their environment. The environment of a North Korean is much much different than that of one of a South Korean, there's no arguing that.
A person's gut can be wrong, but I guess that's part of the reason why you call it a gut. :3 The whole nature vs. nuture thing is a good thing to bring up, but I also have varying disagreements with environments shaping everything about a person. It's just my belief that people will always carry some amount of birth-given qualities. Now the degrees in which said qualities will differ according to what kind of environment you live in, but it'll always exist. Everything I just said is an opinion, though it be a strong one. I guess this is where one of our greatest disagreements lay (or is it lie...? I suck at grammar >_>).
I'm sorry, but everybody joins the military regardless of where they live. All males that is. But you knew that, right? And sure, there are some people smart enough to realize that they are being opressed and they attempt to escape, but that number is very small. Ever read the book 1984? I imagine North Korea is a lot like that. People are all brainwashed and have no idea how much better life can be, they all love the government because they can't possibly love anything else.
I don't really know much about North Korea to be comparing it to a novel like 1984... I also don't know how many people are aware of their oppression. Heck, we right now in America could be oppressed and we'd go on living our whole lives thinking we weren't. I can't be the real judge of how the people in North Korea take in their surroundings, but I just think otherwise from you.
So just because there is worse oppression out there in the world we should simply ignore ours? Isn't that a little hypocritical? Why...i think it is!! Omigosh! You can't simply overlook one injustice for another, you must look at them all. [/COLOR']
Ignore? No. But I don't see the point in parading in front of everyon e that you are, indeed, a South Korean rather than a North Korean. I guess the point I'm trying to get across is too large, seeing as I'm being too idealistic. I'd rather have it so that no one in the US would freak about anyone being from North Korea and accept the fact that they're not all evil or anything.
I'm not saying North Koreans are worth less as a person than a North Korean, what i'm saying is they are very different from us, the South Koreans. And we should consider ourselves different because we are. What is a society without diversity?? Be proud of your heritage. PS: I don't think people should ask if you're north or south korean either, it should be obvious. If you're a korean in america chances are you're from South Korea.
I just think it's sort of lame that we're so adament about distinguishing ourselves. I'd rather have Korea be one big country, not separated. I mean... we separated approximately 50 years ago after being unified for centuries. I mean, what heritage are you talking about? When we talk about Korean heritage we draw from roots so far back that it applies to both countries. If we're talking just South Korean heritage and culture, there isn't much to add, other than our obsession with superficiality. -
Oh, but that leads me to a question (to anyone), I've heard that the movie will be screened in certain theaters (most likely not here, given how nearly no one gives a flying flip about anime here in Hickville =_= Plus the
deaths of two certain characters that I will not name
would most likely scare everyone here XD), and that it will be screened sometime in September. But, if the movie is coming out in September (I believe) on DVD...would the theatrical release be first, then the DVD, or would it be at the same time? Or am I even making sense? o_o
I think Vic Mignogna said at several anime conventions that it was a possibility that the movie would have a theatrical release. If it did, that would be cool, but I'd expect it to open in several major cities (New York, Chicago, LA...maybe others). All I know is that the movie DVD is coming out the day of the last tv DVD... I have no idea about the theatrical, if it does happen. I'm sort of bummed it's not coming out October 3rd. :3

Manga Naruto Manga [Warning: Spoilers]
eleanor replied to Ryo the Tactician's topic in Otaku Central
Chapter 314 Spoilers
So I never thought I'd say this, but I am getting bored/annoyed with Akatsuki. I probably just filled many fans with rage, but I'm being truthful. More coverage on what's going on in Konoha, please... It was cool to find out for sure that Asuma is Sandaime's son, and I love how Kishimoto subtly inserted it just as Kakashi was about to reveal how Naruto would learn a very complex jutsu in an insanely short amount of time, [strike]because he's Jesus[/strike]. (I also found the random monks to be hilarious. Do not ask why, because I don't know. I'm in this weird funk because it's 4 in the morning and I still can't sleep.) This chapter was ok for me. Not diggin' the two new Akatsuki members. Actually I hate them.
-
Yay the Fullmetal Alchemist thread! :D Right now I'm insanely jealous of anyone who went to Anime Expo this year and saw the first English screening of the movie. Or met Vic Mignogna. I'm tempted to go to AWA just because he's a guest there... possibly because he gives girls endless fanservice. *brain fizz*
Now that I got that out of the way...what's this I hear about a second movie, now? I certainly didn't hear anything about it until now. And August of this year? So soon after the first movie? Hm...I advise the one who posted about it to explain where he/she got this information. If it's true, then I'd certainly love to hear more.
As far as I know, there will be no second movie. Even the rumor that one is coming is pretty small and right now it's considered moot. I've been in an anime rut after I finished watched the FMA series and movie. Nothing else has managed to catch my attention at all since then, probably because I don't think anything will trump it for a while.

Korea launches 4 'test missiles' in less than an hour
eleanor replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
I read an editorial that suggests brainwashing in North Korea goes further than just the education and military institutions. A journalist claims to have entered North Korea and interviewed some families in the suburbs (I hesitate to say 'peasants', but I suppose that's the technical term). Of course, that's where it gets fishy - North Korea is notoriously difficult to enter, especially for a member of the Western press, so I tried to take his findings with a pinch of salt. What he found was that these people believe what they are told by the national media, because why wouldn't you? But the national media says that Kim Jong Il invented the jet turbine, the helicopter and the television, amongst other things. When asked how many countries they thought there were outside North Korea, the family conferred for a while before coming up with the tentative reply, "five or six?" If this report is trustworthy then pretty much the entire population of North Korea is utterly unaware that there could be another way of life, other than the one they're living. They're like the people chained up in Plato's Allegory of the Cave [/Fasteriskhead]
I'm defininately not rejecting the idea that people are brainwashed there. All I'm basing this off of is my logic and what people who've gone to North Korea tell me. My family is pretty religious, so we've had a fair share of missionaries and preachers come to our house, and a lot of the time they talk about North Korea. A questionable source, of course, but I believe them. If they've got the faith to go to a place like North Korea and risk huge consequences, why would they lie about the people? All I've heard from them is that the people they've visited are insanely kind and only hope for a better life. Whether or not they know who invented what or our world geography, they're not all brainwashed communists. I have no idea about the people in the cities, though. I'm sure that's where the brawinwashing is the heaviest and most influential. -
I'm not sure where you live Lunox but it get's really frustrating to be asian down in the south because first of all, everyone expects you to be chinese, everyone expects that you can't speak english, and everyone assumes you're related to all other asians. It's really quite annoying and sometimes it causes me to snap and exaggerate, the only reason I want poeple to think that South Koreans are Different from North Koreans is because I also want to be valued as an individual, not "An Asian".
I live in Georgia. A suburb, but that only means the prejudice is hidden and sneakier. It's always there, no matter how people will try to hide it. Even though at the same time there are also tons of people here who are cool with everything. Of course, I didn't always live in one. I've gone through all of the Chinese stuff and everything you've listed, and still do, but if you don't want to be seen as just an Asian, you could just say Korean. I mean, I dunno, I really have never heard anyone call themself a South Korean until now. It's always been Korean or Korean-American, not South Korean.
I've seen some investigations aired on CNN about North Korea- which is very different from South Korea. It's not unusual for people to be lying dead in the streets from starvation and yet Jong Il is insistant on having everyone in the entire counrty believe that he is next to God and that things outside the country are much worse. He has all these little ceromonies and stuff so he can be assured of the country's good will. And if he doesn't have it then heads will roll- literally. No one in North Korea is allowed to know about life outside the country and they can't travel freely. That is a lot different from South Korea.
I don't know if this was a post written in response to my arguments, but I'll go ahead. Obviously the countries themselves (North and South Korea) are different: one is a communist dictatorship and one is democratic, etc. etc. I'm only talking about the people. I really doubt all North Koreans are communist loving people, considering a lot of them are starving because Kim Dong is using so much money on the military. I'm sure there's a fair share willing to do anything to get out of there. -
I'd like to know how you know this. Have you been to North Korea? If so, then i'll take your word for it. If not, and you're just speculating, then i'd like to point out a few things that changes my point of view. [/COLOR']
No, I'm basing this on my gut, and I happen to think my gut is right. It's my strong belief that many of the people there are just like you and me. They just happen to be under the rule of a cruel dictator.
North Koreans are forced into joining the military for a certain amount of years after they graduate from high school. In the military i'd imagine it wouldn't take much for a normal North Korean male to be totally brainwashed into thinking that Kim Jong Il is next to God. Have you seen videos of them marching through the streets? It's pretty scary stuff, but to them it's life, it's reality. I personally believe that the North Koreans are very very different from the South Koreans. My mother is South Korean and that's the impression she has of them....but who knows? Maybe you're right and me and my South Korean mother are wrong....::shrug::[/COLOR']
Ever think about the peasants on the outskirts of the country? The women? The children? There are North Koreans willing to face death in trying to escape from North Korea to China, only to be caught and sent back by the Chinese. Yes, I'm sure they love starving and watching their families die.
You're not South Korean, you don't know what it's like to be catagorized in the same group as a communist North Korean or even Kim Jong Il himself. But then again, i'm just guessing. Maybe you are Korean...::shrug::[/COLOR']
I am Korean. But if I told you I were from North Korea would you really think different of me? I don't think it matters. I have never in my life ever called myself a South Korean, and I have never seen the need to. The 'categorization' of the communist North Korea forced upon all Korean is nothing, nothing compared to what people from the Middle East has gone through. While we're sitting here bitching about how "we're not the same" in our safe homes because oh no, we are getting categorized, a group of people just died. In any part of the world. We should care about people not because they're of our 'race', but because they're humans. I don't give a crap if you're from North or South Korea, and no one else should either. P.S. In addition to my angry post, to everyone out there: when someone tells you they're Korean, the first thing you ask shouldn't be 'north or south'? First of all, get over it, the North Koreans aren't exactly flocking the US trying to lay out secret plans, and second of all, you annoy the **** out of 90% of the Korean population. -
I hope that you all don't think any less of koreans because most Koreans in the United States or other countries are South Korean because you can't really leave a communist country like North Korea that easily. Also, just a little background info, South Korea is pretty wealthy, because they are a democratic union. North Korea on the other hand is communist and run by retarted communist leader Kim Jong Whatshisface, I don't really care. South Korea has completely different views than North Korea, which is why they refuse to merge or share any of their wealth with North Korea. Bottomline, North Koreans and South Koreans are extremely different, please remember that.
Um, what the hell. North Koreans and South Koreans are extremely different? It's not the people in North Korea's fault that they are under the rule of Kim Dong II. Do you think they're happy about starving and love him or something? This the biggest load of BS I've read in a while. Bottom line, the people of the continent of Korea are not very 'different'. North Koreans just happen to be dying because of a disgusting leader. Moreover, I find it sad that you're more concerned about maintaining South Korean 'reputation' than helping your own people. -

I really doubt the US would go to war with North Korea. The only thing that could ever drive us to war with North Korea was if they actually bomb US territory, which I also doubt would happen. I'm guessing they're doing this for attention. Their threat of a nuclear attack on the US is a scary one to think about, but I don't think they're in any condition to really wipe the US out. Unless Kim Dong has a random reservoir of money hiding somewhere, they're not going to be able to do anything in the face of more powerful countries. Or I have no idea what I'm talking about because I haven't kept up with anything at all. :/ -
While you're complaining, can you actually give any good, realistic alternatives?

What Charles and White said. It's easier to do your work out in the mornings, since you get it done and over with. And workouts should always last more than 40 minutes. Personally, I don't enjoy going to a gym and working out on any man-made machines. I usually go running in the mornings. It's good for your endurance and heart, and it'll work our your legs and stomach. If you have any kind of mp3 player to listen to, I suggest that. Running without music makes me bored and I usually can't stand it.
Er.. check your scores really quick, it was
Ecuador who won the game, 2-0. They were all over Poland.
I have been anticipating the cup for a few weeks now, so I'm glad it finally kicked off! I had a spare during the first game so I was able to watch it. What a great game it was, too! Some of the shots were absolutely amazing. The last goal that Germany made was incredible. He was so far out and that ball just curved beautifully into the top corner.. ahhh.. *melts* Heh.. so I guess that tells you I'll be keeping up, hey? XD I'm also watching out for South Korea. They really managed to do some great things last time around.. Oh the joys of the underdogs =P I'm expecting alot from both Germany (very close last time.. they have a very solid team put together, and the home advantage is huuuuuuuuuge) and Brazil just because.. they're Brazil. 2 games down and 54 (53?) to go! Alright!
*hits self* Edited my post. I'm just slightly dissapointed because I'm going to camp for the next three weeks. But at the same time the camp I'm going to is fjcking amazing. Hopefully I'll be able to check online and watch some of the games on tv at times.

:D World Cup started! Of course the first game was Germany vs. Costa Rica
(Germany, 4-2)
and then Poland vs. Ecuador
(Ecuador, 2-0)
. The only two teams I'll probably keep good track of are the US and South Korea (who else loved Italy vs. Korea last world cup?). Unfortunately I don't really know how good the US team is right now or how they've progressed, so if someone could fill me in that'd be great. As for South Korea... I'm pretty sure they're a solid team but they're not as good as last time. Hopefully they'll pull through. Anyone else watch World Cup?
I guess I'll join myself [like keyblader'] i want to redeem myself. ^^' But question. When you say predominant, do we HAVE to use the colors as secondary or can we not use them at all?
No, you don't have to use the colors at all if you don't want to. This is a very loose round, methinks. Handicaps are not very controlling, so we should see a good variety of entries.

We can use all the colours of the friggin (lol) rainbow if we want to this time around, right? Oh crap I hope so... I don't work well with limited colours.. >.

So as the overall tournament winds down, we wanted to thank all the participants in [HB!] and also give them a fun thing to do. While on her visit to India, Bloomsbury co-founder Liz Calder said in an interview that she suspects the final Harry Potter book will be released in 2007. -Mugglenet.com There is no official release date or title, and there are a limited hard facts about the book. They can also be found on Mugglenet, but I've posted them here. Don't read it if you don't want to find out anything, although I'd have to say nothing on the list is very shocking in the least.
Confirmed Information On this page you can find several points of information we know about Book 7. Each of these points have been confirmed by an official source related to JK Rowling. * Harry will face Voldemort for the final time * Harry will be attempting to find and destroy Voldemort?s remaining Horcruxes * Harry will return to the Dursleys' during the school vacation, but the magical protection Dumbledore arranged will expire on his 17th birthday when he comes of age * Harry will visit Godric?s hollow * The last word is expected to be "scar," but may change * We will find out something "incredibly important" about Lily Potter * We will find out who R.A.B is * We will discover more about Dumbledore's past * There will be no more Quidditch * We will discover where Snape's loyalties lie. In an interview, Jo said: Question: There?s an important kind of redemptive pattern to Snape. JKR: He, um, there?s so much I wish I could say to you, and I can?t because it would ruin. I promise you, whoever asked that question, can I just say to you that I?m slightly stunned that you?ve said that and you?ll find out why I?m so stunned if you read Book 7.
And my point about literacy rates... Yes, you could say we are all literate, but at what level are we literate? There is a good number of Americans who can read but at a low level.
Again: poverty, mediocre education, etc. Some people may have dropped out of school because of bad circumstances. If all you're asking here is "why can't people read higher-level literature and talk properly"... get over it. Not everyone is going to be able to read Brave New World and write a five page essay on it. Language serves many purposes- simple communication being one of the most important.
-
Even if these are imitated, they're all really great! Lines are very clean and everything looks very, very good in general. *thumbs up* Only critique for ya is that I want you to start drawing original stuff now. You seem really comfortable with imitating art, so it's time to branch out. I'm sure it'll be great, judging from the stuff you've already posted.
-
We have a 99% literacy rate. Yeah, that very possible 1-5% gap is a large amount of people, but I'm sure there are certain circumstances (such as poverty, etc.) that prevent good education. I mean, really. 99%. This is amazing compared to other countries. And it's not the US is free of extreme poverty, like many people think. I'm pretty sure most literate people don't speak 'proper' English. I've probably already made several grammar mistakes that are obscure and not really taken into concern by the majority of the population. I mean... English/Lit class is my best subject, and I don't remember what gerunds are. If you named a bunch of grammar terms, I probably wouldn't be able to correctly explain them. They're just instinctively in my brain now. As for President Bush, it's nothing serious. His grammar may be off, but it's not like he's some kind of moronic idiot. I'm sure there are immigrants who go to Harvard and can't speak with good grammar. If you can communicate well, that's enough for me. Unless you're majoring in English or something, you don't have to be amazing.

sakurasuka: First off, great job with the vectoring and taking advantage of the handicap settings. Your base image of the girl is great. I love your vectoring, and I also like how clean and simple it is. :] I do not think the circular patterns in the background match well with the girl. I also think your text placement is very unattractive... I want to say you shouldn't have used text at all. The random 'sad's are akwardly placed and don't mesh well. r2vq: Great original concept. It's something new and something I didn't expect, which is a good thing. Execution wise, I don't think it's amazing. You meant this to be a bookmark, but truthfully, I would not want to use this as a bookmark. The diagonal contast between the lower half and the bit in the right hand corner is sort of akward, and I don't know why you put a ribbon hole at the top. Very, very close. My vote goes to r2vq.
-
First of all, great jobs to both of you. Katana: When I first looked at your piece, I had no idea what it was. I may sound like an idiot right now, but it took me some time to actually realize that it was your face. (I had to read the your notes to finally get it.) After I realized that it was your face, I'd have to say that it's pretty neat. I have no idea how you did this, so kudos! Awesome job with outlining and such. Or however you did this. lol However, I take as sort of a bad sign when I can't tell what a graphic is. The end result must always speak for itself, and I also take is as a bad sign that I was forced to read the notes. In addition, I don't see how "falling apart piece by piece" correlates with the graphic. Maybe more of a 'fading away', but falling? I don't get it. Lastly, I do not like the aesthetic look of the scribbly-ness. Ezekiel: Nice. I think you did a great job under the handicaps, and I think the font matches well. Everything looks pretty neat and clean, and I think the balance is ok. It may be a little off to many people, but I didn't get irritated by it or anything. (Plus... it's Shika-boom-boom! :D) My only critique is that it's very conventional and safe, but on the other hand, I value conventionality to an extent. My vote goes to Ezekiel.
