I feel like I'm getting shot down here. I'm saying CONSIDERING the time period he wrote it in, the female characters are pretty strong. Now that we live in a world where women are treated the same, it might seem dull and not that great. I'm just saying...>_> Don't kill me here. I definately don't think Tolkien is sexist. I mean. Just, no. :/ The explanation of Shelob is largely thought of to be based on Tolkien's past, when he was bitten by this giant tarantula...or some other big spider. A lot of which what happened in his life is clearly evident in his books, even though Tolkien right out denies it.

Anime Ending that makes you want to strangle the director
eleanor replied to Okita's topic in Otaku Central
Death and Rebirth wasn't even an ending, it was a recap of the 24 episodes, lol. A lot of people like EoE, maybe you don't like Evangelion in general. Hideaki Anno's Gunbuster had a similar ending to Evangelion, and fans' accusements of GAINAX having put together the ending in a short period of time in general annoy me. Anno was actually clinically depressed during the time, and everyone should also keep in mind that there is a huge chance that he meant it to be that way. Of course GAINAX was running low on money because of the infamous two chicks in an elevator scene and the Shinji/Kaworu scene, but you can even use those as an example of how wonderful Eva is put together. I don't get what fans wanted. What the crap did you expect from Evangelion anyway? It's not like it was being psychological in the first place just for fun. -
Mine would be when I actually managed to finally kill the third phase of the...monster you had to fight before fighting Ganon in the Windwaker. I mean, seriously! Good god! Was their even a strategy involved with killing it? I didn't find one. I think I was blindly shooting about fifty arrows per second at its vulnerable...orange ball or whatever. I think God came down and blessed my game controller or something, because I actually beat it. ... It was amazing. ... Wasn't that bast*** in a Link to the Past or something?

No, you actually don't. O_O *is still haunted by the boy next to her who DIDN'T SHOWER FOR TWO WEEKS* And forced to read The Silmarillion.

Freeloading off of mangas is like downloading fansubs, so I don't why so many people here are against it, lol. I don't see why you should even do it. It's like...let's go to Waldenbooks and hide in the corners reading manga! :O But I do read about two pages to see it's worth my money.

Who went to camp this summer? how was it?
eleanor replied to foreverinfinity's topic in General Discussion
I went to Duke TIP...most amazing camp, I must say. It's an academic camp [nerd camp, lol] that has qualifications of certain SAT scores. You got in invitation in seventh grade if you've done well in school and you took the SAT or the ACT. Anyways, it's an awesome camp. I went to Davidson College [my second year] and took a class on Lord of the Rings. There's basically a bunch of stuff you can choose from, like philosophy, debate, certain math classes, psycology, Shakespheare, filmography, fantasy, writing, computers [like game making, JAVA, etc.], theatre arts, probably anything you can think of. The cooler classes are at Duke, lol, which is where I'm going next year. There's even a class on Vampires, for pete's sake. You have tons of classes that get into specific parts of large subjects...there's even a marine lab. I could go on and on about how wonderful this camp is. Because it is. XD You stay in an actual college dorm room and get a roommate, and you take six hour classes Monday-Friday and one hour classes with your teacher assistant. It might sound dumb and boring, but if you picked a class to your interest, the time will literally fly by. You have TONS of fun and excitement in those classrooms, I tell ya. You learn stuff that you probably won't learn anywhere else and it's awesome. :) You actually get real college professors and...smart teacher assistants [all of them were from like Yale or MIT] And unfortunately you get real college food...ugh. Anyways, just because it's an academic camp doesn't mean it's boring. It's AMAZING, like I said before. I worship it. You go to movie theatres and roller rinks and such every week and have nightly activities like sports of...more movies or drawing or something. They give you a lot of freedom and you have hallmates that usually become your best friends. And you can make trips of CVS and stock up on sodas and chips and hide them in your closet...that was fun. And the friends you make there actually stay friends...you keep in touch with them like crazy. I consider the people I meet at TIP like friends I've known my whole life. On the last day they let us have giant sleepovers in each other's rooms and we were all squashed...it was so funny, lol. And yes, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I adore it. -
Well, there's also Prince of Tennis [an anime series] which deals with uh...a bunch of guys playing tennis, lol. I haven't seen it but some of my friends really adore it. I've seen picture though and it looks nice. :) I think it's mainly about a giant tennis tournament or something along those lines. Haven't noticed any sports manga, though.

Princess Nine is an anime series...an excellent one I might add. It's all about a girl baseball team and how they cope with sexism and all sorts of things...it'd really a great series. Especially if you're a girl, lol.

I just took a three-week course on Lord of the Rings at an academic camp and the professor stated
that Sam left Middle Earth because his heart, even though he only wore it for so long, had part of the evil. He had the leave.
I'm not trying to be all intelligent here because I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to know everything about Tolkien's works, but I think I trust my professor. >_> Don't hurt me! I LOVE Samwise, his loyalty and bravery left me with a mental refreshment, but I'm just saying something that the professor said. ._. But you guys have all chances of being correct. :)

*ditches all sense of modesty* I freaking own this game when I'm playing with Link, Roy, or Marth...*modesty comes back* but my friends will beat the crap outta me when I'm with anyone else. Maybe I have a fetish for swords or something. When I first started playing SSBM, I had an unhealthy obsession with Roy and wouldn't really play with anyone else. I'm not into doing anything random with Roy like going up and just hitting people, I get hit back about ten times if I don't be careful with EVERYTHING I execute when I play with Roy in a big battle. And I learned never to use him as an aerial fighter. >_> But he can totally destroy anyone in a one-on-one battle...no matter what, lol. And if you've played with him a lot of can destroy everyone in a big battle, too. So..yay. :) I think Roy and own and be everyone's mothers in this game. XO He's so cool. Marth is like Roy, except worse. That's all I really have to say, lol. No, I just kid. I used to think that when I first played with him but I can beat a level nines with Marth and his wonderful blade tip, so it's all good. I never play with him anymore in big battles, though, I enjoy having giant fun fests with Link. :D Link > Everyone, so disregard what I said about Roy earlier. :O [how can anyone NOT like Link?!] He's a good player overall, since Roy and Marth can't do hit and run XD. Just kidding. Or am I? Anyways, you can use both combos and the button mashing technique with him [which is why he's excellent for beginners, lol. My friend picked up the GCN controller for her first time and slaughtered a level 6 player with Link] so he's good in small and big battles. Once you get moving with Link and start hitting your enemy nonstop with his sword, you already have the first place trophy in your hands. And his little spin attack is the best. You can do like 50 combos with that thing. I think. ~_~ I don't have a favorite arena, though. All I can say is that I don't like Hyrule Castle because a lot of time we all seperate into corners and so we can barely see ourselves, lol. And I have bad eyesight. And basically my skill...uh...well, I can beat fighting three nine level CPUs at the same time with Link/Roy/Marth but as I said before I'd totally die if I got in there with someone like Kirby.

You misunderstand me. I didn't mean that he was actually evil like Sauron-type evil. I mean he's been corrupted by the ring and has a dark aura around him because he always wants the ring. But in TTT special scene where he's in Gondor, he hasn't been exposed to the ring and so he's a cheery, happy, friendly dude who's not corrupted.
And it rarely shows signs of Sam being corrupted. The time he really shows it was when Frodo was captured by the orcs in the third movie and Sam comes to the tower to save him. It shows Sam not wanting to give it back. But Sam is too loyal to Frodo. He even overcame the ring for Frodo and for the fate of Middle-Earth. Frodo's strong, but so is Sam. Don't diss the Gamgee XD
^_^ I wasn't really directing the post at you, your post just reminded me of it. Sorry about that. BUT,
Sam was ultimately corrupted by the ring. I'm just saying that Frodo is freakishly strong, something that many people fail to notice. Like I said, Sam had to leave Middle Earth in the end...the ring corrupts anyone who carries it.

I really disagree with anyone who still thinks Boromir is evil. He freaking took about four arrows and kept on fighting to protect Merry and Pippin. If that's evil..then you people are just plain whacked. I don't think people still fully understand the sheer power of this ring. There's all these people saying: Oh, that Frodo, he's such a wimp, he couldn't have done it without Sam... Well, yes, Sam was very important and I love him but Frodo is amazingly strong. Sam was corrupted by the ring only after an HOUR of wearing it, and Frodo's been wearing the thing for forever before they arrived at Mt. Doom. Carrying the ring is like having a 50 ton rock on your back; Frodo was literally crawling up Mt. Doom in the end. It's known in the books that even Sam had to leave Middle Earth later on because he had become corropted by the ring. It's not like Frodo is some wimpy little thing that can't do anything... Well, anyways. On the Tolkien/Lewis friendship...J.R.R Tolkien eventually distanced himself from C.S. Lewis because he didn't like the way he wrote. Lol

Mm...an anime collection is nothing without Evangelion. It's a pure classic. Grave of the Fireflies is a must, too. If I had $250 the first thing I'd get is the Evangelion Platinum Edition Vol. 1 & 2 and probably the RahXephon set. Revoltionary Girl Utena has tons of shoujo-ai and shounen-ai implications, just to tell you if you're not fond of the stuff. If you do like shounen-ai, you should get the Gravitation set. It's probably the best shounen-ai series out there...Yami no Matsuei is good too, but I'd Gravitation anyway. I'm treading on thin ice here when I say you should get FLCL. It's one of those shows that people either love or hate...but I myself think it's excellent. If you like overall whackiness and total randomnes...[as well as humour] than I guess you'll like FLCL. And if you like FLCL, you might like Excel Saga [I actually don't, but about everyone else adores it and thinks it's hilarious]. The FLCL DVDs are absolutely packed with extra stuff and fun goodies. :D But be careful, anime DVDs are expensive and even $250 will run out before you can get everything that everyone's mentioned here. Just don't take our word for it...maybe do some research or something.

In my case, no way could I ever stay alone FOREVER on some dinky little island. Even if I had things like fire, food, water, etc., I'd probably desperately try to make some sort of boat and get off of it as soon as possible. I hate people who act as if living alone forever with bare necessities will be perfectly find because they're 'anti-social' or whatever. So am I, but I'm going to sit on some island for fifty years and slowly rot away. I'd like to do something with my life, thanks very much.

Perhaps because Korean and Japanese are two different languages, lol.

Ah. *cracks knuckles* Sadly, my only area of actual knowledge. I started skiing when I was tiny. It was a crappy experience for me because my dad was freakishly driven to teach me...well, whatever. But it was easy to get the hang of after going down the bunny about a billion times. After I spent a long time skiing, I started to learn snowboarding. Here's the problem. I DO know from personal experience and stories from other people that snowboarding after you learn to ski is dang hard. To be blunt, you usually end up with a sore and frozen butt and dying feet by the end of the day, and you'll probably want to go kill the nearest furry animal in sight. Probably because people who already know how to ski are accustomed to having their legs seperate. Snowboarding looks easy for skiers, but having two feet on one board sucks. People I know who decided to learn how to snowboard before ski...well, half say it's the hardest thing they've ever done and the other half say it's pretty easy. Anyways, I'm rambling because ya don't know how to ski yet. ^_~ Anyways, I'd recommend learning how to snowboard first because I simply think it's extremely fun. [So is skiing, but I find snowboarding more fun.] Whether you get the hang of snowboarding quickly or not depends on your balance and fear, I guess. Yes, fear is a giant factor in snowboarding and skiing. Most people try and be very cautious and try not to fall down, which is ridiculous because...eveyrone falls down a lot before getting good. I'm not saying you should go out and kill yourself, but don't hesitate to do things all out, even if you think you'll fall. After just three tries, you'll probably master it enough not to fall down. And falling doesn't even hurt because you're covered with thick jackets and pants and snow. Oh, right, and DON'T follow anyone's intructions on exactly which foot to put forward. Some people put right foot first, some people put left feet first. [righties and goofies, I think they're called.] My dad had me going righty for a long time before I realized I was much more comfortable the other way round. >_>

Naw, it was real deal. It was just amazingly cheap. O_o. But I'm going to get the DVDs, anyway, I love Gravitation too much. ^_^

For me, it would be Evanessence (am I right?). If you really don't want to waste your money for some crappy albums, I suggest you buy this. You will not be sorry. Right you are my young...old...person. :/ OB member. Anyways, I think Amy Lee was a nice set of pipes, there. I love her in all the songs...I think she's a great singer. ^_^ She's good with strong and soft voices and um...her voice is pretty? ._. For a solo artist, I'd would absolutely definately go with Christina Aguilera. Her songs aren't...great, but she can sing. Really, really sing. It's like 'guh' as you listen to her sing. :O There's probably a better singer out there since I don't know as many singes/bands as you guys, but I still think she's awesome at singing.

Manga Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle [Warning: Spoilers]
eleanor replied to Aya_Fujimiya_42's topic in Otaku Central
I actually have tons of black spots and thin spaces where an object is supposed to be solid black, but that's just my book. *glares at mal's copy of Tsubasa* But you're right [again] Dagger, lol. :) -
When I was first introduced to anime [DBZ] I got obsessed with it and started spending all my time on the internet looking at anime things. My science grade sort of died and my math grade got stabbed to death. Joy! And then I started to get cynical and thought I was too good for anyone who thought anime were cartoons...and got arrogant. On the plus side, I started drawing. :)
-
XD This thread is so old! Back when my user name was anime_gurl. ... *shudders* I got this really, super cheap Gravitation box set about a year ago, I think, but I'll probably end up getting this one, too. Americans always add in all the extra stuff. :3 I probably won't even try the English Dub because I thought the Japanese dub was amazing...and I like to read subtitles. :D Now my brain is getting excercise...or something. I'll probably snatch up the OVA when it comes out...the art difference is sort of leaning in my favor there, but we'll see.

Each volume will be packaged with three collectible chess pieces depicting CLAMP's most famous characters appearing in that particular volume. Once all 12 issues are collected, fans will have a complete chess set-CLAMP style! "CLAMP is the most-loved manga studio in the world, and we're thrilled to be able to team up with them to celebrate their anniversary," said TOKYOPOP editor Jake Forbes. "It may be CLAMP's party, but it's the fans that are getting all the gifts in this one-of-a-kind event!" Each issue of CLAMP No Kiseki: The Ultimate Collection will showcase the popular titles that manga fans all over the world have come to cherish from CLAMP's unmatched repertoire of work. Only 10,000 copies of each installment will be available nationwide. The highly collectible nature of CLAMP No Kiseki: The Ultimate Collection ensures that these books will sell out and become unavailable, so fans are encouraged to get them quickly! -PopCultureShockNews The CLAMP Northside and Southside art books constitute a stunning exhibition from best-selling manga collective in history. These sumptuous collector's editions feature resplendent full-color art on glossy paper with stylish matte covers. The books also include original artwork not featured in other CLAMP titles, original comics featuring the CLAMP artists, how-to-draw-manga tips, and exclusive interviews with the CLAMP team. In order to render these exquisite books properly, the TOKYOPOP editions of Northside and Southside will be printed in Japan with special color inks not available in the United States. -Tokyopop.com Basically I'm jumping up and down, waiting to get these things. The Clamp Northside and Southside things are selling for $19.99 [but it says $29.99 on the tokyopop website...? Maybe it's because that's preorder.] which is an awesome price, I think. Even $29.99 is ok, considering that this is Tokyopop. Northside has Clover, Magic Knight Rayearth, Legend of Chun Hyang, CLAMP in Wonderland, and others, while Southside has Clamp School Defenders, Clamp School Detectives, Suki, Wish, CLAMP School Paranormal Investigators, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, The One I Love, Shirahime-Syo, Legal Drug, and a How-to-Draw-Manga section. I'm not exactly a huge fan of past CLAMP art styles, but this kind of thing is worth my money. :3 I'm more excited over the Clamp no Kiseki: The Ultimate Collection. I don't know if the Tokyopop release of this in Waldenbooks also include the little chess peices [more like figurines, if you ask me], but I'm fine either way. It just sucks that we have to wait one year for it to start coming out, and then two more years just to finish the collection. =_=

Anime Which manga/manwha do you want to be animated?
eleanor replied to Dagger's topic in Otaku Central
Hehe...Kyou Kara Myou is like Fushigi Yuugi without Miaka and a double order of shounen-ai from what I've read about it. Sounds intersting enough, though. Anyways, as much I'd love for Kill Me, Kiss Me to become an anime, the chances are freakishly slim. 1) It's manwha and 2) it's manwha. I was shocked when Tokyopop started to sell manwhas in the first place, lol. But I think Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles would make a good anime. It'd be pretty cool to see all this crossover stuff [and Fai and Kurogane] and I LOVE the art style [and Fai and Kurogane]. I don't know what the manga would qualify as...shoujo or shounen. Probably both, which is good. :D I could see it becoming an anime, anyway. And I strangely like to see Legal Drug as an anime, too. >_> -
Anime Otakon 2004, Anime Weekend Atlanta 2004 & other conventions
eleanor replied to Syk3's topic in Otaku Central
Since I live just outside of the District, Baltimore is only an hour or two away from my home. However, my interest in Otakon stems solely from the fact that I'm still hoping certain series will be licensed before the convention season ends. After thinking about this for a little while, I realized I would be able to find most of the announcements online shortly after they ended up being made, and decided to spend my money on something else. Even though Otakon has already started, I'm [strike]forcing[/strike] urging you to go next year, Dagger. An anime fan that hasn't been to an anime convention is seriously missing out on some good, clean fun. Though, the prices for Otakon are pretty...steep. O_o. AWA is only about 20 bucks for each single day. But then again, AWA only has about 6,000 people attending. I can't begin to imagine 20,000. >_> So, it'd be great for you to just visit once. It's really an awesome time...unless you have some scantily clad cosplayer come and harrass you. -
Manga Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle [Warning: Spoilers]
eleanor replied to Aya_Fujimiya_42's topic in Otaku Central
I've not really been a fan of CLAMP's art design before, but I really adore Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. I hope it's translated... It sound interesting :) It's been liscenced to Del Rey Manga... a new manga buisness. They got it pretty quick because of some deal. *scratches head* Well, whatever. I'm just glad that they picked it up, but sort of sad at the same time because maybe Tokyopop could have translated and gotten them ready quicker. The second volume isn't due out until September 2004. CLAMP also put out a hardcover edition of TRC...probably to milk this thing of all its money and stuff. :3 So, yeah. I'm pretty obsessed with this manga right now, lol. A lot of people don't like it because they see 'many flaws' or something. It's our regular adventure manga, but I like it a lot for some reason. Probably because of Fai and Kurogane.
