I wouldn't risk a friendship for their wellbeing...[/color']
That seems like a rather odd position, although I do see where you're coming from. It all depends on how serious you think the situation is. If the chances of your friend pulling his life back together are reasonable, then perhaps it'd be prudent to wait a while. ... but if you really are his friend, you shouldn't be afraid to get him outside help, from his parents or elsewhere. You may lose your friendship, but it's better than losing him.
Regardless of what people might feel, the fact of the matter is that the Chinese were faced with a problem and did what they saw fit, and no one has the right to pass judgement on those people - they did what they thought to be right. In the end, do we not all act upon what we believe to be right? So, again, what right do we have to point fingers and cast stones?[/SIZE']
Good intentions shouldn't, and don't, excuse poor decisions. By your pathetic logic, Nazis deciding to massacre Jews aren't open to criticism because they were doing what they thought right. What the Chinese did was wrong. Pure and simple.
Why must Israel bomb the airport, bridges, and people homes too? It's so sad.
Why must radicals continue to kidnap and kill Israeli soldiers? Do they not realize the consequences of their actions? That they will be responsible for many, many deaths? It's so sad. Hezbollah is part of the Lebanese government, so it makes sense for Israel to attack Lebanon when Hezbollah kidnaps Israeli soldiers. Lebanese and Palestinian civilians are unfortunately being caught in the crossfire here - but this is because they continue to allow radical militants to hide in their midst. Until that changes, they will continue being collateral damage when Hamas or Hezbollah decides it wants to start a little controversy by attacking Israel.
Not to get off-topic here, but if you read the various Star Wars books though, it seems like the Empire had a fairly good thing going. It was well-organized and (at least outwardly) worked like a well-oiled machine.
Yep. They were so efficient they didn't even bother having a debate before they blew up Alderaan.
I think its the government's job to make people's lives better. Limit freedoms.[/COLOR']
Exactly. We can ban books on pipe bombs, communism and Hitler, because they?re all bad. Same with Islam, because all Muslims are terrorists. Ban pornography, because it corrupts people?s minds. Harry Potter does that too, by making people witches, so let?s burn those books. Then we should shut down the New York Times, because they expose state secrets. Then we?d all have much better lives.
The President has only grown in power since the conception of the United States. He can arbitrarily declare war, since he has control of the military and is the "Commander-in-Chief,"

He can declare war IF CONGRESS ALLOWS IT. In addition, he tried to amend the constitution for (not to be redundant, but its still fresh in everyone's minds) gay marriage. Yeah, that one went over nicely.
Chill with the caps, Farto. You?re both right. The War Power Act of 1973 gives the President the authority to declare war, so that the United States can respond quickly to threats, but also makes sure that if Congress hasn?t supported that decision within 60 days the troops are brought home.
In addition, what's the use of a filibuster? Making people get bored and leave so when you vote, they're not there. That's cheap and should not be allowed in our government. I thought our government was supposed to be professional.
lolz. Where have you been?
If someone is commiting injustices against you and your people, of course you're not going to sit back and take it.
This is why Israel, after decades of insincere negotiations by the Palestinians, suicide bombings, invasions and most recently the kidnapping of this solider, acts decisively when threatened. What did Hamas expect if they took a hostage? Twelve years have passed since an Israeli soldier has been taken hostage, and now we're seeing the reason why. It's time the Palestinian people stopped turning a blind eye to Hamas and turned over the militants among them. Only then, with Hamas out of power, can Palestine hope to become a nation.
Sure palestinians start a lot of the fighting, but it's because of the constant injustices that occur. People continue to be abused and humiliated at military checkpoints. For example, some women are forced to give birth at a checkpint because they won't let them pass.
Checkpoints are implemented to prevent suicide bombings. Perhaps if Palestinians hadn?t made a habit of blowing up buses full of Israelis, they wouldn't have this problem.
Anyway, Israel isn't 'evil and mean' because it has big weapons, but because of how it uses its power. Because they can, they destroy people's homes. Because they can, they jail innocents, because they can, they continue to rob more and more land from the palestinians. Because they can, they impose curfews at times, and anyone caught outside, or even near their windows, will be shot, no matter how young or innocent.
Israelis don't go mindlessly shooting anyone out past curfew. Recently many illegal Jewish settlements were forcibly dismantled by the Israeli government. It's regrettable that innocent Palestinians have, are and will continue to die because terrorists hide in their midst. I believe that Israel wants peace, and doesn't deserve to be classified as mean, let alone evil. This is evil:
The body of a teenage Israeli settler abducted by Palestinian militants on Sunday has been recovered by Israeli troops near the West Bank town of Ramallah.

I don't see how attacking soldiers can be called terrorism. Isn't this war? The soldiers killed and kidnapped could well have killed a few palestinians each.
Capturing soldiers and holding them is fine. But threatening to execute a captured enemy combatant?
What if let's say, France decided to invade the U.S and make it their new land.
roflcopter
And in 1967, again my grandparents had to flee to Jordan to escape the war, and lost yet another home. I find it highly doubtful that Israel would imprison anyone without a good reason. It costs a great deal of money to do so, after all. There have been female suicide bombers, so I have little doubt that there are probably women held by Israel because they have been involved in terror-related activity. The Volokh Conspiracy posted about Palestinian women being allowed to care for their children while jailed, which seems like the right thing to do. So for Hamas to threaten to kill an Israeli soldier unless Israel releases all women and children it is holding, while on the surface an acceptable demand, isn't really that cut and dried an issue. Israel is taking care of one of it's own by invading Gaza, and I hope that Gilad Shalit is rescued. Hamas isn't doing itself a favor by threatening to kill 19 year old draftee, morally or in the arena of public opinion. Chabichou, anyone who kidnaps and threatens to kill a hostage is a terrorist. This kind of disgusting, animalistic behavior does the Palestinian cause no favors. Israel has taken a number of Hamas officials into custody, hoping to swap them for the soldier. Israel won't be killing their captives, though, regardless of their soldier's fate.
What do you think when you see someone attractive?
I'd hit that.
And when you know someone, you realize that attraction of personality...what do you think?
I usually avoid forming relationships based solely on personality. I might befriend the person, but nothing beyond that.

I didn't think that The DaVinci Code was all that spectacular a book to begin with, and unfortunately the cheap plot the novel did contain was poorly translated to film. Tom Hanks didn't seem to be the right person to play Langdon, and while Tautou looked fine in as Neveu, her dialogue left a lot to be desired. This was especially evident in opening scenes at the Louvre, where any intended suspense was mutilated by abysmal screenwriting. Ian McKellen did a great job as The Teacher; his acting was convincing and engaging throughout the movie.
When he was dragged away by the police outside the cathedral,
it was clear that he'd eclipsed both Langdon and Neveu as the movie?s dominant personality. As Silas, Paul Bettany performed well, although since his character wasn?t at all dynamic, I feel that McKellen was the best of the lot. The movie?s conclusion was so awful many people in the theater, including me, were laughing. I?m already looking forward to watching the Pope?s son jump out of the helicopter just before the anti-matter detonates in the film version of Angels and Demons

MC Lars' first album, The Graduate was released on Febuary 14th, and hasn't been sold in a lot of stores. I finally got ahold of a copy today and think it's some pretty good stuff - in a quirky, lighthearted and odd-humored sort of way. I posted a review here , and I've read several others online. I don't find it suprising people seem to love or hate his music. Has anyone else heard of MC Lars, and what do you think?

Where I go to school, no extra points are given for AP classes. Instead we have a weighted class rank system. So a student who takes AP classes and earns an B will have the same class rank as a student that takes a normal class and gets an A. If you don't take AP classes, you don't have a prayer of being in the top 50. This system is being abolished next year, and students will get no advantage for taking AP classes other than not having to take a final exam (they take the AP tests instead). I figure students should take AP classes because they enjoy the subject or have a special interest in it, not just to boost their grades or class rank.
