My question is really this: What slang (well, vocabulary, really) do you use that is not native to your local dialect? It can be something simple as living in North New Jersey (where I am), and consistently calling sprinkles "jimmies" (seriously, they're sprinkles!). Or it can be more international, like calling a washcloth a flannel (it took me AGES to figure out that's what they meant, XD). Occasionally the use of "y'all" slips in, although I go through that in phases. And I always say "holiday" instead of "vacation." The friends I associate with know what I mean, but when I'm talking to regular people who may/may not understand, I have to try to catch myself.

Playing the piano usually helps me relieve stress, or put me in a better mood if I'm feeling unhappy. Reading a novel or manga also helps. Basically, from what most people had said in this thread, creative or imaginitive things help with relieving stress.

Merh. I'm not sure I can remember *every* movie I saw this year, but I'll try. Most of these I watched with my mom when she rented from netflix. The others I saw at school... for free. XD And only a few I saw in theatres. The Painted Veil - Very beautiful scenery, sad story. LOVE the song at the end (A la Claire Fontaine). That song has become one of my favorites. M.I.B. II - This was fun, watching it again. We watched it in a dorm office while my friend was on duty. Sweeney Todd - Saw this one at school. Some of it I could kind of guess what was going to happen. But the cast was great. Johnny Depp can really sing well. Actually EVERYONE sang really well. And Anthony is quite cute, of course. ;) Serenity - I watched Firefly first, and then couldn't *not* watch Serenity. ^^; Forbidden Kingdom - Your typical adventure kung-fu movie. =) Definitely, Maybe - Absolutely my favorite "chick-flick" ever. Everyone should watch it. It's not cliche, and whatever is cliche, they cleverly point it out first, so it's okay. 27 Dresses - Not as good as I thought it would have been. But not bad. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - Possibly my FAVORITE movie this year. It TOTALLY kicked ***!! If you don't compare it to the book, it was a really good movie by itself. Skandar got all the best parts and he was so cool in it. And I have to say, all the actors and actresses were actually really good. (Harry Potter movies on the other hand...) Yeah, everything was AWESOME about this movie. ^_^ Man of the Year - I'd never seen this one before, actually, but was on a plane and had nothing better to do, so... yeah. The woman is pretty nutty in it though. O_o; Juno - Oooh, I liked this one. I didn't expect it to go the way it did, so that was a surprise. American Ganster - Mmm... it was good. It was, and it was acted and executed really well. But not completely my type of movie. The Illusionist - Just saw this one like... 30 minutes ago. I really don't understand why people said Jessica Biel was bad in it, or why the movie itself was bad. I LIKED it, a lot. Of course, I kind of guessed the end, but still, it was great!!

Wow, it actually took me a few minutes to think of what my first manga was. And even so, I'm still not sure, but this is as good as my memory gets. And the sad thing is, I'm more sure about what my friend's first manga was (Ragnarok), than what mine was. I just remember her buying the first volume and me being way too reluctant to get something because each vol. was like... $10. Which is still why I don't own a lot of manga (I usually borrow them from her). Um, wait, what was the point again? Oh yeah. My first manga was Magic Knight Rayearth (and it was in the used books section on sale =P), because I knew CLAMP had done Card Captor Sakura, which I really liked, so I figured I'd like this, too. And then I bought xxxHolic by them, which I REALLY like, a lot. ^^;

I was thinking along the lines of what James said. Actually, James sort of said exactly what I wanted to, and more succinctly as well. First the Military thread and now this. Dayum, James, you're on a roll.

Haha, I know *exactly* what you're talking about. I think I'll use your excuse if an RA ever comes knocking. Fortunately for moi, I'm only half, so I don't get very red. I look like maybe I put on too much blush, but that's about it. ^^; I know other people though, that get entirely red, regardless of how long they've been drinking. They were Chinese and Vietnamese. Although curiously enough other Asians I know (besides myself) don't get red at all. O.o;
Matt is pretty much the only person in the story who Mello acts like a human being around.
Haha, that's totally true. I just feel like there isn't enough evidence for the L/Light pairing. Or any pairing that involves Light, actually. He doesn't care about anyone, except for his family (evidenced in the LA-Saiyu episode, and the other one where Mello blows up the building. *cough*). And he manipulates not one, but TWO women to kill people for him with the promise that he "truly loves them," they'll be "the goddess of the new world," blah blah blah. And he is the mastermind engineer behind
L's death
for goodness sakes, I can hardly imagine him falling in love with the guy. >>; The one thing I will say about their interactions with one another is that Light has a lot of respect for L, and is probably the only one he regards as an equal. In ep. 36 and 37 he goes off on a long inner monologue about how Near has no right to be wearing a mask of L, L was much better, L would have figured in
the possibility of a second notebook
, etc. The tl;dr version: Light respects L, but he's still a cold hearted bastard who can't love anyone. The end.

I saw a news clip on TV yesterday about this. And on the clip, it said that something like 75% (or more, was it 80%?) of Americans feel that the DADT policy should be changed to allow gays to openly serve in the military, up from 45% who felt that way when the law was enacted in 1993. I remember that Clinton, at the time, tried to push for a policy that allowed gays to openly serve, and was met with a lot of resistance, and the DADT policy became sort of a "compromise" between the two camps, so to speak. It's a shame that this even has to BE an issue, and I think the policy should be removed, and that gay people should not have to hide their identity in the military. Hmm... I wonder what Obama's position on this is (considering he's my choice in the fall).

Warning: Image contains BoyLove/shounen-ai hints if you squint and read into it. Do not proceed if this offends you. Er, not that I think it will, but warning are always nice. Image linked for your convenience I was going to put this in the art forum, but it's not really art-art, and there's not really enough to critique it. I just thought I'd share this with Death Note people. I thought up the idea yesterday and made it last night in Microsoft Word, and just "Prnt Scrn"ed it to an image. Even if you're not reading into the Boy Love/shounen-ai, you have to admit that Mello and Matt are at least close enough to be best friends. They seem to spend a lot of time together. And during the time they're living together (or what I gather from that one shot in the anime), I think Mello would totally freak out if Matt went missing. Oh, and chocolate for you if you can figure out the phone number.

I can only speak as a Catholic, though I imagine the process is similar, if not identical, in other Christian denominations. I agree that ("technically") the name you pick should have a special meaning to you - pick up a book of saints, or search online for an encyclopedia of saints (it exists). Find a saint with a quality you admire. Or start with a quality you admire and pick a saint. Or you can do what I did (the non-religious version), and pick a name of someone/something you like, and then check to make sure they're a saint. ;) I picked Alice, as in Alice in Wonderland, which was vaguely related to Gothic Lolita, a fashion I'm interested in. My sister picked Alexandra, for the last Tsarina of Russia (Alexandra = English version of Alix, the Tsarina's real name). -
Really? I thought I was going about this whole thing rather childishly. I even went to eating ice-cream and crying for three hours straight. Not as if eating a lot of ice-cream is bad for me. Actually, I need it. I'm as skinny as a toothpick.
Aww. *hug* It's okay that you initially felt bad. Being upset and sad doesn't make you childish - it's natural to feel that way. And there are plenty, plenty of people who eat when they're upset. Now, if you were to, say, cause major Dramaz0rs on myspace and IRL through friends and stuff, thaaaat would be a childish response. ^^;; From how you behave on OB, and the types of things you write, you really do seem like a very mature person - please take pride in it. You'll just have to be patient as everyone catches up to you. ;)
In my opinion, you're better off getting counseling from someone who really is a counselor Lonley Fighter. There are a lot of programs out there that will help people in your type of situation and they're far better qualified than anyone here.
You know, I completely agree with that. Fantastic suggestion, SunfallE. (And no, that wasn't sarcasm, I'm being genuine.)

Sandy: In regards to marriage, I'm just citing statistics that I've read about before. And yes, there are certain benefits that come along with marriage. Pros and cons - you're recommending one thing and I'm recommending the other. And I'm not going to get into the institution of marriage; that's best left for another thread. In regards to my other suggestion, like I said, I *know* someone who did that and it's working quite well for them, actually. It's a personal choice that's Lonely Fighter and his girlfriend's decision to make, but I'm offering that suggestion. If you're suggesting they look into marriage for "the sake of the child," even if they may not be completely and utterly head over heels in love with each other, so am I throwing out a suggestion for "the sake of the child." *shrug*
-
I'm very glad to see that you're doing the right thing by supporting your girlfriend, and already (mentally) taking responsibility for the (soon to be born) child. There are a lot, and I mean a lot of guys who would totally take off in the middle of the daytime and not look back. You're already on the right track. I would definitely suggest looking into government aid as well. Like Indi said, government aid is there for a reason, might as well take it. College is your choice - my suggestion is to look into something like night school so that you can still work to support the child but also get a college degree which really will help you get higher pay, but that's just my opinion. You don't necessarily have to marry her, and I'm thinking doing so might not be in either of your best interests. Most teen couples who get pregnant and subsequently get married actually get divorced after a couple years. If you want to marry her because you love her and she's the center of your world, that's one thing. If you're marrying her for the sake of the child, that's another, and inadvisable. I know someone who did this, and I'd also consider looking into not signing the birth certificate, and only having the mother's name. I only advise this on the un-researched assumption that it would qualify the child for more federal aid, things like free school lunches, or even a larger scholarship for college, or whatever. Obviously you'd have to look into that, do your research, talk to some people, and discuss it with your girlfriend, but you've got nine months to do it. I'm not sure anyone, whether you're 18 or 48, is really ready to be a parent when they hear the news, but you've got nine months to sort it out for yourself. Read some books on parenting, child development, and being a father. There's no 'parent manual' but those books might help. Best of everything for you, your girlfriend, and the little one.

First, I'd just like to say that I am extremely impressed with your maturity level and your careful thought over the situation, already. You remind me of myself, actually, but a better version. I won't give you a lot of advice because everyone else has already said all the important things. I'd like to add that you seem to have worked everything out, and in my opinion, you've done everything you can do. Even so, it's normal to feel bad after a break-up, whether you or the other person did the breaking-up. Maybe you'll be sad for a while, but it's just one of those things you'll have to "wait out." In the mean time, keep yourself busy with other friends, your video games, internet, whatever. Eventually it will get better. *hug*

All these sightings are pretty cool - I wish I could have seen some of them (especially "Sylar" ^_^). And James - ILU, you have the best celeb sightings, lol. My mom is related to the Rockefellers (I'm sure I've told everyone that at least three times before. XD), and on the campaign trail, Nelson stopped by their home and took them out to dinner. =) And a friend of the family used to be an assistant to John Meyer, when he was at his home in New York - she used to take out the laundry and drycleaning, get the groceries, stuff like that. The only celeb I've met myself (other than voice actors at cons), was Jamie (Campbell) Bower, who was Anthony in the Sweeney Todd movie. And that was because I purposely went to the club his band was playing at, heh. They were actually really good, too. So if you're in the London area, they're worth a gander. And I'm not gonna lie, it was way cool to be so close to him. So adorable, too bad he's got a girlfriend. >>;

AP scores, lulz. I remember fretting at the time, only to look back and realize it didn't mean a lot. XD I got a 3 on my AP Calc (AB), and AP Physics. I got a 4 on my US History (That teacher was AWESOME, the way she reviewed and taugh material - I didn't even have to study and I got a 4), and a 4 on my English Lang. (Didn't take the lit - I don't know why I didn't, *shrug*)

DeLarge - that's cool. I hope you get to move (it's such a damn expensive city, though!). Good luck, and thanks. ^_^;; DW - It's Gavin in color!!! Lookin' good, as always. =D -
Ditto on the wanting to go to Yaoi-con. There's going to be a Weiss Kreuz panel this year (I only know because the girl hosting it is the maintainer of a Weiss lj comm) and I'd love to go to it. But it's in Cali, so that'd be a "no." I'm definitely cosplaying for my cons!! I'm being Edward Elric (an artbook picture where he's wearing something completely different), and Asuka Murase from Weiss Kreuz (the dead girl Youji moan's over all series. XD). I'll be in lolita, as well, and hopefully in a new dress if I can get around to making it in time. >>; I went to AnimeNext, which was pretty good, and I can't wait to go to Otakon in August. NY Anime Fest is pretty early this year, September, but I'll be going to that, too. I just... have to register. ^^;;

Stephanie - Aww, thank you. You're so sweet. ^^;; And what about yourself, any recent pictures? DeLarge - Lookin' good! Are you a Londoner, or were you just in London for the day? And at Stephanie's request, two pictures of myself.
But what on earth do you mean by typically "Euro" clothes? I've always considered myself an average dresser... Not fancy but not sloppy either. ;D
Hmm, well, the "Euro" look, especially with guys, is just... more tailored than most American guys dress, even with a casual look. Especially in the closer, tailored fit of the jeans (American guys typically have very baggy jeans). The hair, the trendy messenger bag, and then there are your funky Finnish shoes. Yay! (Seriously, shoes don't look like that ...In America.) -

Oh Europeans. ^_^ And DW: I love the hair!! I remember a while back you told me you were going to cut it in that style, and I didn't get to see the "after" pictures. You look great!! I love the style on you. =) -
Anime Anime Character Similaritys (look-a-likes)
Roxie Faye replied to Living Impaired's topic in Otaku Central
My mind has totally been drawing a blank on this for days, which is frustrating because there really are a LOT of anime characters from different series who look remarkably similar, I just haven't been able to remember them. But I finally have one, and I also finally remembered to go back to this thread, lol. Ken Ichijouji (from Digimon 02) Aaaand... Uryuu Ishida (form Bleach) What's even better is that their English VA is the same - the lovely Derek Stephen Prince! And yes, I am completely THRILLED he is coming to Otakon, you have no idea. He's my favorite voice actor EVER. Eee!! -
I have cereal every weekday morning. At home, it's frosted cheerios with 2% (or sometimes 1%) milk. Oddly enough, I cannot have milk from any country other than the US, though cheese and ice cream is okay wherever. (And since I like routine, found that one out the hard way in two different countries. >
