Sadly....I think you're going to need to refresh MY memory lol Also, I'm an odd man out here to an extent. I'm a Gamer, but I'm not huge on Anime or anything of the sort. I found the site through a buddy of mine a few years back.
*snerk* It's okay. I don't remember, exactly, where you used to hang out on OB. I wanna say Digimon, but you're a little too new for that. I remember seeing you in some interesting debate threads. (Some with Chabichou (sp?) perhaps?) I just thought it was cool you were in the air force.
Also if current members want to introduce themselves to new members then that'd be pretty cool. However you want to welcome 'em. Except for nude pics. Unless you're female and over 18. Just joking. But seriously.
Good thing you're kidding. Don't forget - I'm 18 now, and I'd smack you if I didn't know you were kidding. ...and I wouldn't smack you anywhere you'd like it, either.

The Harem of Celebrity Lust [image heavy] v2
Roxie Faye replied to eleanor's topic in General Discussion
*glee* I missed this thread the first time around, so I'm glad to be doing this now. First we have... Jack Davenport, who is just about the sexiest man alive (...aside from various j-rockers). I'm so annoyed he's married - I want to marry him! I also chose this picture because it's a very casual shot of him - and if he looks gorgeous now, imagine what he's like when he's all dressed up and posing for the camera. ^_~ I also love Jack in Pirates (LOVE YOU NORRINGTON!!!). He was also that poor sucker in The Wedding Date, and Coupling is just a funny TV series, and he's absolutely DREAMY in it!! ^__^ Next there's... http://www.saguaro.org.uk/wallpapers/rickman05.jpg Alan Rickman! Mr. Rickman has acted in about a billion movies, and it would be impossible to name them all. Among his more recent-ish credits are Professor Severus Snape (^_^) in Harry Potter and Marvin in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He's frickin' amazing, and beautiful, end of story. -
If your not ready for knowing a guy better, what makes you think knowing a woman would be easier?
Mostly I was jesting, but guys often say that women are a mystery and that they can't figure us out. But for me, even though people often say men are much simpler to figure out, I still don't understand them at all. ...Boys have cooties... j/k :p
Also, if you really want a more meaningful relationship you might want to try seeing if there is something keeping you from getting there. It could be that you're just not ready for it yet, you haven't found the right person, or you've got some fear that's keeping you from going any further. Or the timing is off, some guys or in my case women, even though the dating is fun, it's apparent immediately that you're not really interested in getting to know each other more. It's hard to put in words, but when you date someone who interests you more... For me it just happened. It moved into the caring about what was going on beyond the initial dating bit almost on it's own. In the end I think it's pretty normal to not be interested in wanting to get more in depth in a relationship, if only because it's not that easy to find someone who truly interests you.
*blinks* Actually, that makes a lot of sense to me. (And it also makes me feel like less of a freak.) I do remember, though, that among the reasons I decided not to continue going out with this one guy a while ago was that in the end, I really wasn't interested in him or what he had to say. I didn't like his taste in music or movies or religious views or social views or political views. So you're right - finding someone with whom you share interests is half the battle. I think I've known that somewhere subconciously, but never put it into words like you did. Thanks for the advice. =) -
I don't get it. Are you saying you don't want to be friends with your future boyfriend? Then what do you want from him (besides the physical aspect)?
You know? It's a good question. It's not that I don't want to be friends with some future boyfriend of mine. I guess it's that I find the concept of being friends with a boyfriend really bizarre. When I think of boyfriend, I only think of the annoying obnoxious things like holding hands and cuddling and being mushy, or kissing and making out. I never really think of the mental/conversational aspect of it. I dunno, it's just hard for me to connect the concept of friend + romance = boyfriend. O_o; I hope I do get there eventually, though, lol.
To me it sounds you're just not ready for a relationship. Or maybe you've just lost all hope in finding a suitable man to actually care about. Or maybe you're a lesbian after all (well, you never know!).
I think you hit the nail on the head for me. You've brought it to a perspective where I realize that no, I'm not ready for a relationship. Thanks for all the help. (but man do I ever wish I was a lesbian, I think that would make my problems ten times easier) Incidentally, I met this guy at college who is also from Finland. He's also available - are you? lol, j/k If you just want to talk to him though, let me know your MSN/AIM handle. I'm sure he'd be glad to chat with you - I think he's a little homesick for Finland (he was so excited last week when my indie goth loli mag had an article about Finland in it, lol). And Retri - love the image. :P -
Nicknames... how did you get them?
Roxie Faye replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
I have a few nicknames associated with my online name, Roxie. ... which mostly just means people call me Rox sometimes. Or Charles, who called me roxie boxie. =P My friend Apeiron (online name) calls me "Faye Faye" in real life, after the fact that my online middle name is Faye, and we had an incident wit the Cowboy Bebop episode "Pierott le fou" in which Ed says something along the lines of "Faye faye, mail mail for bebop bebop!" Sometimes other people call me Faye faye, and I let it go, but it really bugs me. I don't like it when anyone but him uses it. It's HIS special nickname for me, not anyone elses. My dad also calls me a shortened version of my name, and I absolutely forbid anyone but him to use it to call me. I won't share my real name with you guys, but the shortened version is fairly obvious. i.e.: if my name was Kaitlyn (which it's not), an obvious abbreviation would be kate. It's like that. I guess in general I have issues when people use nicknames that OTHER people ahve given me. Because the ones that I do have have special meaning to them. With my friend, it's that inside joke. And with my Dad, it's all the good times I've had with him. =) -
Of COURSE I remember you LostProphet! How could I not? lol. I'm also an off/on person, for any of you who haven't ever seen me. I joined in v4 (what version are we on now?), so I'm an oldie, but I feel like I miss a lot of stuff on these boards. lol. I'm a college freshman, and I'm majoring in environmental science, and I love all types of music (except for rap and hip hop and R&B)

For all the mad-crazy crushes and near-obsessions I've had with various boys in my life, I've never actually been TRULY interested in any of them. I love the idea of having a boyfriend (dating, kissing, making out), but not actually having one. I've never wanted to really get to know a guy, never wanted to know everything about him, listen to his problems, cheer him up on that rare time he's upset, stuff like that. The thing is, I mean, I want to know all that stuff about my friends (guy and girl friends), and I want to help them. But I don't really want to have a boyfriend like the way I mentioned, and I feel like I never will, ever. I hope that will change, but I just can't envision myself ever wanting to get to know someone like that. Has something like this ever happened to you? Is it an absolute requirement to truly care for someone (the way I described), to be in a relationship?

This URL links to his userpage on Youtube, where you can find most of the episodes. Youtube is stupid and keeps deleting them for no reason at all. (You can't even claim copyright infringement since it's a parody.) Hopefully he'll have his website up soon, though, so you can view all of them.

A senior boy at my school just moved here this year. He's Korean and has been living in the US for a while, but I asked him to write in my yearbook... and he wrote in Korean. @_@ There are a bunch of Korean kids at my school, but one of them said the writing was too small, the other doesn't have time, and the last one isn't quite as fluent in some of it, although to her credit she was the only one to TRY and read it. -.-; Exhausting all my RL resources, I turn to my OB buddies, asking for a Korean translator. If anyone (please, I'm begging!) reads Korean, would you be able to translate this? Here's a larger size: here. (Note: after he says "laugh"/"lol" the first time, the next words are IHHS, not Korean. IHHS is our school. ^^') Thank you! But I hate making pointless posts that are requests, not discussion, so other than my own request, I thought I'd ask about foreign languages in general: Are there any languages other than English that you speak well, and have you ever done translating? Unfortunately, I fall into neither of those categories. The most I have accomplished in another language is to speak Spanish conversationally. I can carry on quite a decent conversation (okay, provided that no one is speaking at a mile a minute), but I just don't have an extensive vocabulary. And I suppose, it would depend on who I was talking to. I saw two movies at the end of the year in Spanish (with English subtitles so we could have class discussion on them). One was with Guatemalan/Mexican\ more "formal" Spanish, which I could understand well, and the other was Maria Full of Grace with Colombian Spanish, which was nearly unintelligible to me. lol. I've always thought it would be SO cool to be bilingual, and I COULD have been, had my father only spoken to me in Thai as a baby and child. X_x; But nooooo, I don't get to speak anything but English. To me, it's a bit embarrassing. :(

The Inevitable O-Lounge Blondes Vs Brunettes!
Roxie Faye replied to Andrew's topic in General Discussion
I am a brunette, although it is a very dark brown, and I do have natural red highlights. Brunettes are totally better. Maybe I'm just responding to the negative pop culture attitude to blondes, but a lot of times, the blondes I meet either are ditzy, or on top of that, they look ditzy/spacey. O_o;;; I know blondes who are really smart and witty, but then I know more of them who are like the sterotype. > -

Here's a link to my desktop: link Nothing can beat the power of sexy J-rockers!!! Muwahaha!! Luminaire was also kind enough to make me a laminated poster out of that picture. I intend to hang it on my wall in my college dorm. *grins* :D I think what's on my desktop says a lot about me. I run in 800x600 (lol), I like to play StepMania, I own a Harry Potter video game (it's really not that bad of a game), and I still use Quintessential player, which Tony recommended to me a couple summers ago. :p Sexy J-rockers, GO!!! -
When I procrastinate...I usually search Wikipedia for random things, like information about something from a game or a movie I saw recently, or what exactly a disease last seen on an episode of House M.D.[/i'] does to a person.
Haha. Sometimes I do this too when I procrastinate. It turns into "The six degrees of Wikipedia" for me. Which is how I found out that TM Revolution actually played Seymour in some sort of Japanese version of the musical Little Shop of Horrors - it's on his Wiki page. (My school's spring musical was Little Shop and all my friends were in it, that's why it was of interest to me.) Other times, I'll go on Otakuboards (it IS a very fine place to procrastinate. ;) ), or read fanfiction. Fanfiction is an awful way to procrastinate, because I usually end up procrastinating more than I meant to. (If that makes sense.) *_*; I usually only procrastinate on school work (like this major English paper due next week. urgh. >___

Sign Up Final Quest for Glory 2--A Shy and Charles Production [PG]
Roxie Faye replied to Charles's topic in Theater
*grins* Sounds like fun (though I don't know how much time I'll have to play). Um, if you'd rather not have me play in lieu of answer #3, let me know. ^_~ 1) What is your element of power? Conviction and action for what is right and just. 2) Who taught you how to ride a bike? Myself, at age ten, after everyone who tried failed, because of my impaired motor skills. XD 3) When do Okay, since *someone* kind of cheated and told me what this RPG is about (please feel free to blame him for that if you'd like. XD). -
The whole western beauty thing is completely taking over places like Korea and Japan. Girls as young as 14 are getting plastic surgery, and it's like, "Hello, your face probably hasn't stopped developing".
Wow. I think it's really sad when such young girls are saying things like that. My mom just saw something the other day that said eyelid crease (to create one in your eye) was the most popular surgery in Asia, I think so that their eyes looked less Asian (? not sure). The other big "beauty" trend in Asia is skin whiteners, to make their skin white like Europeans and Americans. That's also why I was please that Miss Japan won, when her skin is so dark (although it may be because of tanning - the other extreme end of the skin tone issue. >

Gavin - lol, yeah, Hawaii was definitely an awesome idea. Chris - Thanks. ^_^ I guess I can post up a bunch of the pictures from Hawaii soon (I'm really busy right now, and the only word in my head is "dress" - I need to finish my prom dress!!!!). I've got so many pics, though, I'll have to pick and choose. heh.
Sorry to bag, but I don't understand why people think commercialized women have no figure. Yes, they're skinny, but they have hips. And boobs. And butts. And they probably work out. Angelina Jolie is the skinniest women ever, and has plenty of curves. *shrug*

Have you seen fashion models lately? Organizations are debating whether or not to institute a minimum BMI for their models. I think that speaks volumes.
You know, I think on both sides of the argument, we're generalizing. There ARE a lot of fashion models and beauty figures out there who are actually starving themselves to keep up with the demands of the industry. It IS a problem, and also a social commentary on the (stupid) amount of attention and praise we give to rail thin girls. But you know what? I agree with Lunox, too. There are also skinny fashion models and beauty figures who aren't starving themselves, and who do have boobs and butts. I think the Miss Japan winner, Riyo Mori, looks absolutely fine, in regards to her weight (the purple eyeshadow is a different story altogether). Because guess what? By looking at numerous pictures of her, I'd have to say my wrists are about as skinny, if not a little bit more so, than hers. My neck, about the same or a tiny bit less. I haven't gotten any good pictures of her waist, but mine is 24.5 in. at its skinniest point, if that helps put anything in perspective. And guess what? I gobble down food like no tomorrow. There are *actually* *gasp* PEOPLE with ridiculous metabolisms. They do exist. Skinny, thin, and petite people exist, and even more so in Asian countries. I went to a shopping mall in Thailand where everything I bought in that mall was a size medium because the small did not physically stretch over my body, whereas ANYTHING I buy in the US is small (or un-buyable, because it doesn't come any smaller). I'm not saying that anorexia, bulimia, self-image problems, and unnatural thinness aren't problems in the media, because s--t, they're HUGE problems, damn it! And if a BMI cut-off is going to help curb some of this unnatural, unhealthy thinness, then I'm all for it. But please, everyone realize, especially those of you picking on Miss Japan for being too thin in an unhealthy way, that the girl may actually look that way, naturally. It's a possibility, lol. P.S.: If you want to see what girls without breasts and butts look like, look no further than Olympic gymnasts. The trauma these girls go through, physically, emotionally, and mentally, is sickening. We hound the media a lot for producing skinny women, but we praise these girls for putting their bodies, their womanhood (some don't actually menstruate until they quit the sport and gain weight), and their lives on the line to win us trinkets in a sport every four years.

Truth be told, I don't actually know how many of us know Japanese - fluently. wristcutter does (or has lead me to believe so), and I think Panda as well, but I'm unaware of anyone else who does. O_o; Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but for some reason I have this insane idea in my head that you think we're all otaku/anime fan elitists that are completely submerged in Japanese culture and couldn't care less about anything else (thus speaking Japanese well); and this notion, just for the record, is completely untrue. I'm willing to venture that at LEAST 1/3 of the members have a disinterest in anime, or barely care about Japan; we don't have a lot of Japanophiles around here. =) We're all just people, groovin' and chillin' together. lol. Welcome to OB. Um... to answer your question anyway, I would also say that books and tapes are a great way to learn, if you're really dedicated and interested. There's a book series called "teach yourself" and they have tons of different languages, including Japanese. There's even a version of the Japanese "teach yourself" book with cassette tapes to help with pronunciation and accent. I'm recommending these because they are what I used when I was (trying) to study Japanese. But honestly, if you really, really want to learn the language, I think you need to take a class. Either at school or university, or privately in your area. I've taken Spanish for about six and a half years now (in school), and I would say that I could probably hold a conversation with a Spanish speaking person for a good while, because of what I've been taught over the years. And the only point this story has is that, as annoying as taking Spanish as a language was, in a class for 45 minutes every day, I have actually reaped the benefits. I can only imagine that as a dedicated student, if you took a class in Japanese, with a teacher who knows not only the language, but the ways in which to teach, you would benefit much more. P.S.: Or you could always just move to Japan and try to get the hang of it. I hear cultural immersion is really the way to go. (Although, seriously, it DOES work. lol.)

Writing Directions to where you live - writing challenge
Roxie Faye replied to Roxie Faye's topic in Creative Works
Interesting, and well done. You were very specific and frank. I... don't think I would ever share quite as much information about myself. As it is, I've tried to give a fairly thorough description of my life, although I've purposely left out one detail (for I might kill someone if forced to think about it any further), and I'm sure I've accidentally left out a bunch of details. *_*; Well, here it is, directions to my life: Start on Kenzel Ave, but move to Seneca shortly after. Learn to ice skate long before you can ride a bike. Get mini-tosses from your father and jump off the roof of his old, silver Volkswagen Rabbit so that he can catch you. Pretend to run your dad over with your Barbie Jeep. Go everywhere with your mother. Learn how to spell your last name from her, in two days. Start to learn how to play the piano. Go to Disneyworld with your dad and meet his new girlfriend, whom you like. Get used to your mother getting mad at you whenever you talk about dad. Learn not to talk about him. Move to the town just next over. Make tons of new friends that you?ve never had before, and even some really good ones. Meet some not nice kids, but ignore them mostly, because you?ve got new friends. Go to Disneyland with your dad and step-mum. Go to Boston with them the next year, and the shore after that. Go to middle school and meet your best friend in your electives classes. Go to museums with your mom and read every caption, because it's great fun. Take Algebra in the seventh grade. Get your first D in the algebra class. Find out that your mom understands, and isn?t actually mad that you got a D. Discover the life-changing entertainment form called anime and become closer with a friend who also likes anime. Talk to people online, thousands of miles away, and make friends with them. Keep it secret from your mother. Go away to summer camp with your best friend. Have such an awesome time you wish you?d done it sooner. Make friends with a boy in Geometry. Sit at the weirdo table when there aren?t any friends in your lunch, but realize these people are pretty cool in their own right. See your dad again for the first time in three years. Make friends with a Japanese girl over the summer and e-mail her even when she goes back to Japan. Get involved in ?drama? with your online friends and get kicked out of the ?cool clique.? Go to high school and lose every friend except your BFF. Make sure your freshmen year especially sucks as your other close friend (who likes anime) totally ditches you. Halfway through freshman year, realize you don?t need cliques and talk to your close online friends again. For the first time in ages, have nothing to do over the summer. Start sophomore year especially depressed since you?ve lost almost al your friends. Listen to depressing music a lot and cry. Wish you were brave enough to jump off a building. Write letters to an online friend that you never intend to send, to keep you sane. Get stuck being paired with a know-it-all boy in Chemistry class for lab work. Pretend you hate him more than you actually do, because he probably actually doesn?t like you. Realize you have a crush on him after the class changes lab partners halfway through the year. Listen to Japanese music and watch anime some more. Reconnect with the friend that ditched you (when she apologizes, of course) and have an awesome rest of the year. Work that summer (and make money). Sit next to your crush in Spanish the next year and act like a gawky idiot most of the time. Have a lot of school work but miraculously make it through. Realize at the end that all the work made you a better student, and a better writer. Get your license and drive as much as you can. Use your ability to drive to indulge your ever-growing obsession with anime by going to a convention on it. Stay out until 12 AM in the process. Work. Get a really good band teacher next year. Make it to a starting position on the AcaDec team. Study at Borders every Saturday for ten or eleven hours. Ask your crush out on Valentines Day, all though the day is truly, honestly coincidental, and get rejected. Keep studying at Borders every Saturday. Do really well in the Regional and State Decathlons. Make it to nationals. Cry for days when you get wait-listed at your first choice college. Miss school the day after you get the letter. Take a long time to console yourself, and have others console you about the wait-listing. Try not to think about it. Go to Hawaii for Academic Decathlon nationals and have an AMAZING time. Come back ready to enjoy the rest of a great senior year. You?ve arrived at my life. What about yours? -
Writing Directions to where you live - writing challenge
Roxie Faye posted a topic in Creative Works
My English teacher gave us this assignment because she couldn't think of anything better for an AP class to do (she's an idiot, really). But I thought this assignment was pretty cool in general. Read the biography for the author Stephanie Kallos, on her website: http://www.stephaniekallos.com/about/bio.html Then, present your life up until now as a series of directions to where you've lived, and what you've done in your life, following at least slightly in her style. I thought this was kinda something cool to do; if a couple people post up the directions to their lives, I'll do the same. >_>;;; -
Aaryanna - hey, at least you get offline when you're going to go do something, lol. I really don't understand why people will leave themselves on their instant messenger for DAYS... when they're not there, lol. Can anyone (perhaps someone who does that) explain? I love all your away messages, though. They're great - keep 'em comin'.
-
What are some of the best away messages you've seen, or used? Post them here! If there's any backstory or inside joke to them, let us know. Also, do you use your away messages for things other than away messaging? Do you abuse your away messaging/ use it a lot? For me, sometimes I'll put my away message up if someone's on that I don't want to talk to; but usually I just put myself on "invisible." ^^; I like to use my away messages, though, to send obscure messages to people, or to post inside jokes. I guess, because I check everyone's away message (just to see what it says), I assume people do the same, and so I post up stuff to laugh at, or make them remember a particular time. Some of my better away messages: "Greetings and salutations my punctilious friend! It appears that I've quitted this all to progressive mode of communication for the moment. Do leave your calling card with the butler and I will be sure to make amends for missing your friendly overtures within the near future." This one, I stole from my sister, who used to have it as her away message. People usually have something to say about it, the first time they see it. ;_;'' "if your name isn't blacksword2288 don't bother IMing me, dammit." Translation: "I'm ignoring everyone but Lumi and if you IM me, I'll be very pissed off and you will know the meaning of 'Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned'" "It's econ - that's like math, right?" - Me "Just make sure that, if you're going to have children, you take drugs." - Ms. - "I used to be a person..." - Matt "I have a bad feeling about this." - Like every character in Star Wars (Little AP) "I hate my life." - Me "If I had to name (what the hell should I say?) one subject..." - Rachel" Academic Decathlon! Wooo!!!! During one of our in school study sessions, we kept writing funny quotes on the board throughout the day. They were quotes that people said in the moment, that day. *giggle* "This girl was wearing a cloak!!" "...Rachel... you own a cloak." "But I don't wear it!!!" Another Acadec study day. We somehow got on the topic of people from Connecticut, like this girl Rachel saw one time, who was not only gothic, but slithering around in a cloak. ;) And do us all a favor, and don't pretend like you don't have cool away messages. Because I know that, in fact, you actually do. :p

Manga What do you look for in a manga's story?
Roxie Faye replied to kaekara's topic in Otaku Central
cli·ché /kliˈʃeɪ, klɪ-/ ?noun 1. a trite, stereotyped expression; a sentence or phrase, usually expressing a popular or common thought or idea, that has lost originality, ingenuity, and impact by long overuse, as sadder but wiser, or strong as an ox. 2. (in art, literature, drama, etc.) a trite or hackneyed plot, character development, use of color, musical expression, etc. 3. anything that has become trite or commonplace through overuse. 4. British Printing. a. a stereotype or electrotype plate. b. a reproduction made in a like manner. ?adjective 5. trite; hackneyed; stereotyped; clichéd.

cli·ché Variant(s): also cli·che /klE-'shA, 'klE-", kli-'/ Function: noun 1 : a trite phrase or expression; also : the idea expressed by it 2 : a hackneyed theme, characterization, or situation 3 : something (as a menu item) that has become overly familiar or commonplace
The key part of these definitions are the words "trite," and "hackneyed." I'm again going to refute your idea that xxxholic and DNAngel are "cliche" based on the dictionary definition of these words. I don't know how you can even say DNAngel and xxxHolic are "trite" or "hackneyed." Furthermore, the point is, as indifference said, "done before doesn't necessarily mean cliched." For instance, just because DNAngel has a romance doesn't make it cliched. Romance is in EVERYTHING. Romance doesn't even qualify as a cliche, just because then every single piece of literature ever written, way back to Shakespeare and the like would have to be considered "cliche." Additionally, I, too, would love to see the examples you can cite for me in which the themes from DNAngel are seen in other manga.
If you like nothing but CLAMP and Shounen Jump manga, for instance, that's your own perogitive (sp?) but at least admit that you aren't 'weird' for liking them. THAT's the part that set me off.

She was saying that her taste was weird and depending on what she normally likes that may be true you know. ;) I think you read to much into that statement. Since for all you know, her tastes may be completely different so for her those manga may be weird because it's not what she normally likes. There's also the factors of what's popular among one's friends or the area they live in, etc. So if you consistently like stuff that others don't it's going to seem weird to you even if it isn't. The question of whether or not it really is weird is irrelevant if you think about it. Where I live, there are quite a few people who think anyone who likes anime in any form is weird and a pervert, a sex offender as well as a delinquent who needs a life. It doesn't make it true though. lol
indifference says it very well, I think. You don't even know me and so all you can see is that I've read A (singular) CLAMP series and like it, and SOMEHOW that disqualifies me for being 'weird.' I said my taste in manga was weird for a reason, because to me, it is. Personally, I think it's strange to be able to hop from a manga like xxxHolic to say, Saiyuki or Only the Ring Finger Knows. The plot of those manga are completely and entirely different from each other. I also believe that liking xxxholic was weird because it's the one manga that I like and the friends I've lent it to did not like it.
Ah yes, I can see this, and that's exactly why[/i'] i made that post, in an attempt to be informative. That's why i said to spend more time on the internet -- here you can find out exactly what is popular, and what is well-received, and you will learn about more series so that you can identify that a series is cliche. The reason for the post to begin with was that i was under the impression that she really did think her taste was weird, and that she didn't know that the manga was cliche, and so i was saying 'hey, check it out, you've got stuff to learn.' I may not have worded it very well, for that I apologize. I didn't mean to be offensive, but it's in my nature I guess XD.
By the way, I spend massive amounts of time on the internet, and frankly, I still felt my taste in manga was weird. There are far too few sites about xxxHolic as compared to a lot of other manga and anime. Additionally, spending a lot of time online and "identifying a cliche" have nothing to do with each other, and everything to do with understanding the definition of a cliche. I don't need to know about the plot of every manga ever created to know if something is "trite" or "hackneyed." I think I've had enough life experience, literature classes in the past ten years (3rd grade - 12th), and ability to use a dictionary to know when something is cliche or not. I don't need the internet to tell met that. And in anycase, why would you go to other online sources and take their word for it, when it is much more important to reach the truth yourself? I think it is apropos to quote a speech that I wrote, which won me second place in a national competition: "What will we do when we hear someone's ideas, thoughts, or opinions? Will we wordlessly agree with them? Will we look at the people around us and respond however they are responding? Anybody can do that, but they are still being average. In order to rise above the state of being mediocre, it is important to question these ideas, evaluate their validity, and determine for.our.selves whether they are important ideas or not." I don't need the validation from the anime and manga community to determine whether or not something is cliche. And humbly, I would like to say that I don't need your validation either. P.S.: Props to Lumi (see post somewhere below mine). Lova ya dear! Thank you! *huggles* P.P.S.: (I think it's apparent I'm having a "Chris White" moment. *giggles*) -
Manga What do you look for in a manga's story?
If you think reading CLAMP manga like XxXHolic or reading DNAgel makes you unique and crazy, you are sadly extrmely mistaken and need to spend more time on the internet. Believe me, if it's being released in America, it's more than likely pretty popular, and if it's got the CLAMP STAMP then you can bet everyone and their grandma has read it, lol. Not to say these aren't good series or anything XxX Holic is entertaining if I do say so, but I'd never go so far as to say that it superceeds cliche.
My question for you, is who do you think you are? First of all, what gives you the right to address anyone, including me so rudely? And second of all, don't you dare put words in my mouth. Where, in my post, did I use the words "unique" and "crazy?" Use the firefox find feature and it won't find those words because I never said anything that you implied. Next time, THINK before you decide to make false accusations. The word I DID use was "weird," referring to the subject material that I read. I consider the events in xxxHolic pretty strange because of the spirits involved, the people who bring bad luck (
Himawari-chan
), those who keep spirits away (
Domeki-kun
), the whole concept of who Maru and Moro are. I consider DNAngel "weird" because how many manga do you know of where a boy turns into his "other half" when he sees the girl he likes, and that his other half is a master thief. That's not weird? I also fail to understand why xxxHolic does not go beyond the "cliche." What cliche are we talking about? Just because it's made by CLAMP does *NOT* automatically categorize it as cliche, you do realize. I'm aware of a few other manga, yes, that do involve a shop that grants wishes (i.e. Yume Kira Dream Shoppe), but in that case, the two manga are incomparable on a thematic level. Yuuko has such wise knowledge and (to Watanuki, infuriating) vices that make her so much "darker" than Rin. Additionally, by their very nature, Maru and Moro are darker than Alpha (all are assistants). It also takes more than a couple manga of similar concept to constitute a cliche, but even if somehow, oddly enough, xxxHolic did quality, I did say I liked manga that bent the cliche, which I think I've proven xxxholic DOES. On DNAngel, don't even try to pretend it's cliche. It's not. The romance has nothing to do with it being remotely cliche. Find me another manga with the same storyline and I'll consider debating it with you. Frankly, I have not had anyone on Otakuboards say something so discourteous and condescending to me in years. All though there is more that I would like to say to you, I hope I have gotten my point across well enough. -

I too will say that I love manga that's either not cliche, or if it is, it approaches and does the cliche in a new, interesting way. I don't really like manga like Naruto or BeetJuice (is that what it's called? Whatever it was, it reminded me of Naruto). I'm not especially interested in Bleach. The funny thing is, I do watch Naruto and Bleach as anime, but I'm just not interested in the manga. Whistle! is a sports manga that I really love. (And even though my friend has like... every volume of Prince of Tennis, she's never lent them to me. I swear, she must be possessive of those volumes.) However, the sports genre is, generally, off my radar. I'm not a big fan of Crimson Hero (volleyball, ShojoBeat mana), and I've never picked up Hikaru no Go (I'm going to classify it as a sport since they DO compete). I have really weird taste in manga. My favorite is xxxHolic, by CLAMP. It's really, really fun, too, if you've read other CLAMP works, because there are a lot of allusions to their other stuff in xxxHolic. I've noticed that I'm particularly attracted to humorous manga. Or manga of different genres, with humor thrown in. Kill Me Kiss Me (manhwa, whatever) is completely hysterical, Saiyuki is not only bloody and gorey but also hilarious, and DNAngel is sweetly romantic... and funny! Even xxxHolic is pretty funny, Watanuki especially. Hmm... I also read yaoi (BL, really) manga, all though those tend to be angsty or dramatic for some reason. Exceptions to the rule, weird! O_o; But yeah, I'm going to say that mostly, I like humor.
